As you know, Our Lady of Lourdes Church has been blessed with the presence of a number of
Permanent Deacons over the years. Currently, Deacon Jack Meehan and Deacon Tom Lucie
exercise their ministry here. While Deacon Jack Teufel and Deacon John De Guardi are officially
“retired” (retirement is mandatory at age 75), you will see them assisting in various ministries here
at Our Lady of Lourdes as well.
Next Saturday, May 28, one of our parishioners, Rich Maher, will be ordained a Deacon by Bishop
William Murphy at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. Since the ordination will take place
during Memorial Day weekend, our Parish will celebrate a MASS OF THANKSGIVING on
SUNDAY, JUNE 5 at 12:30pm. I hope as many of you as possible will attend to celebr ate this
wonderful time in the life of our Parish and in the life of Rich Maher himself.
Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners:
I thought it would be a nice idea to look at the history of the Diaconate in the United States. The
Diaconate was restored as an official ministry in 1967 by Pope Paul VI on the advice of the
Bishops present at the Second Vatican Council. The first Deacons were ordained in the United
States in 1971. Here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, the first Deacon class was ordained in
1979. Our very own Deacon Jack Teufel was part of that first ordination class.
Men who are ordained to the Permanent Diaconate are called by God to serve God and His people
by living a life of charity and service to God’s Word and Sacraments. The Deacon is called to be a
sign and witness of the presence of Christ in the world. Since the Second Vatican Council, the
Church has emphasized that the Deacon is called to serve the Bishop, and his priests, by becoming
more intimately associated with the poor, marginalized, silent and voiceless.
There are three (3) key areas of Diaconal Service: Ministry of the Word, Ministry of the Liturgy
and Ministry of Charity and Justice.
Ministry of the Word: The Deacon, by wor d and example, br ings the message
of Christ to the marketplace. The Deacon proclaims the Gospel and preaches the
Word of God.
Ministry of the Liturgy: The Deacon pr esides at Baptisms, Mar r iages and pr esides at wakes and burial rites. During Mass, the Deacon leads the Penitential Rite,
proclaims the Gospel, leads the General Intercessions, prepares the gifts at the altar
and occasionally preaches.
Ministry of Charity and Justice: The Deacon is called to be the icon of Chr ist,
the Servant, seeking to be an advocate of the poor and disadvantaged.
Next week, we will talk about the process of becoming a Permanent Deacon.
Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.
In Christ,
Fr. Brian

Pope Francis’ Love Letter Invites Deeper
Reflection On The Beauty Of Marriage And
Christ’s Teaching, USCCB President Says
WASHINGTON—Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky,
president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomed Pope
Francis' apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, on love in the family.
Pope Francis' "love letter to families" invites everyone to grow as
members of the family of God, Archbishop Kurtz said April 8. The full
text of his remarks follow.
A Statement from Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, President of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops
Today I joyfully welcome Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), the much anticipated post-synodal
apostolic exhortation of Pope Francis.
The pope has given us a love letter to families — a love letter inviting all of us, and especially married
couples and families, to never stop growing in love. It is also a love letter calling the Church, the family
of God, to realize more and more her mission to live and love as a family.
Pope Francis is calling us to enter more deeply into the beauty of marriage and Christ's teaching. From
the opening lines of Genesis to the closing chapter of Revelation, and throughout the Gospels, God
speaks eloquently to us about the joys and challenges of marriage and family life.
The Holy Father is giving us an active opportunity to reflect upon how each of us can belong more
deeply to Christ. The Joy of Love is inviting us to share the treasure and medicine of Jesus. The
teaching of Jesus inspires us to live out God's hope for us, and the mercy of Jesus heals and sustains us
when we fall short. Let us remember that no obstacle is too big for Christ to overcome.
I encourage all to read and reflect on how the words
of Pope Francis can be applied in our lives, in our
families, and in our society. I am grateful once again
to our Holy Father for encouraging and leading us in
our call to encounter Jesus ever more deeply, especially in the great gift of family life, and to be His
missionary disciples in the world.

Yesterday’s a Closing Door
When a door closes, knock on it a few times. But if it still doesn’t
open, let it stay closed. In LIFE, when you see a period at the end
of a sentence, don’t try and turn it into a comma. Know when
something is over and move on.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
The Book of Psalms contains many beautiful verses of mercy which we have seen these past
few months. The word “mercy” speaks about God's love and care for us. As we pray Psalm 145
during this month of May, let us come to truly believe in this great love and care that God
provides for us.
Psalm 145: I Will Praise Your Name (David Haas)
Refrain:
I will praise your name, my King and my God.
I will praise your name, my King and my God.
I will give you glory, my God above,
And I will bless your name for ever.
Every day I will bless and
praise your name for ever.
The Lord is full of grace and mercy,
Who is kind and slow to anger.
God is good in every way,
and full of compassion.
Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord,
And let all the faithful bless you.
Let them speak of your might, O Lord,
the glory of your kingdom.
The Lord is faithful in word and deed,
and always near, His name is holy.
Lifting up all those who fall,
God raises up the lowly.

Growing with the Gospel
Sharing the Gospel
The disciples learned a lot from Jesus, but
he knew they still needed to learn more.
That's why Jesus asked God the Father to
send the Holy Spirit to his friends. Jesus
knew that the Holy Spirit would stay with
them, to teach them everything Jesus
wanted them to know.
Mission for the Week
As you read a Bible story tonight before bed, ask the Holy
Spirit to teach you what Jesus wants you to learn.
Prayer
Dear God, I
want the
Holy Spirit to
teach me
more about
Jesus, too.
