0 Boca Raton E-News In this issue: ♦ One Girl’s Wish ♦ Brazilian Beat September 2014 On Girl’s Wish – To See Baby Sea Turtles at Gumbo Limbo MPA Presents Five-year old Astraea wished to see a sea turtle. Specifically, she wanted to ♦ September in Sugar see baby sea turtles go into the ocean. This little girl has been through a lot, Sand Park fighting leukemia and a year out of treatment, the Make-A-Wish Foundation ♦ Coastal Cleanup (MAW) was determined to make her ♦ Banned Books Week wish come true. Her family had heard about Gumbo Limbo Nature Center ♦ Art in Public Places through a friend, so MAW contacted GLNC to grant her wish! Astraea, along ♦ Dance Class with her 2-year old sister Verona, her mom, and a family friend, got a tour of ♦ Previously Owned Gumbo Limbo packed with sea turtles! Treasures Sale Before the cross-country journey even began, they got a head start on learning about sea turtle thanks to the City of Boca Raton’s Library Services, who sent a number of books to ♦ Dune Planting Astraea in advance of her trip. After a long day of travel and a night’s rest, the family headed to Gumbo Limbo. ♦ Upcoming Events ♦ The first stop was the Shipwreck Tank, where resident green sea turtle, Carr, swam by and showed off his weights (Carr has a buoyancy issue and has weight permanently attached to his shell that allows him to swim freely). Whiptail stingray Maui also put on a show, splashing around while eating her lunch. Off to the shallow tanks, where loggerhead sea turtle Neptune waved “Hi!” The FAU (Florida Atlantic University) Gallery had a big surprise waiting; after a tour of the gallery, graduate student Boris brought a loggerhead hatchling up to the gallery for an up close and personal visit with Astraea. The next stop was the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility for a behind-the-scenes tour and to meet several sea turtle patients. Another surprise was in store: sub-adult loggerhead Lighting is healthy and ready to be released, and Astraea and her family are invited to attend! The visit wrapped up the following evening with a special, private sea turtle hatchling release just for Astraea. Before the release however, another surprise was in store….the Friends of Gumbo Limbo presented both Astraea and her sister with a gift bag of sea turtle goodies from the gift store to bring home with them and always remember their trip to Gumbo Limbo! Before we headed to the beach, Astraea spent a little time with the 27 loggerhead and 6 green hatchlings as they began to wake up from their day-long nap. And as they all began to move around energetically, we knew it was time. We headed to the beach and as the turtles were placed in the sand to begin their journey to the ocean, Astraea and family watched with excitement! All 33 hatchlings made it to the ocean as Astraea stood onshore, waved goodbye and shouted ‘good luck!’ Contributed by Kristin Child Staying Informed…. Always looking for things to do in Boca Raton? UN Agenda 21 September 2014 page 5 Banned Books Week - Celebrating the Freedom to Read at the Boca Raton Public Library The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Of Mice and Men … what do all of these books have in common? At one time or another, someone has attempted to ban them! From September 21−27, 2014, the Boca Raton Public Library will join other libraries, publishers, bookstores, teachers, journalists, and readers in celebrating the freedom to read! Banned Books Week, an annual event, commemorates the most basic freedom in a democratic society -the freedom to read freely and express our views. While every book is not intended for every reader, we all have the constitutional right to decide for ourselves or our children what we can read, hear or view. During Banned Books Week, the Boca Raton Public Library and thousands of libraries and bookstores across the country will participate in special events and exhibits to showcase books that have been banned or challenged. The Boca Raton Public Library will have Banned Books displays at both locations. Patrons are also encouraged to take a picture of themselves (a “selfie”) or a friend or family member holding a banned book and post it on their social media pages with the hashtags #bannedbooks2014 and #bocalibrary. Celebrate YOUR freedom to read during Banned Books Week from September 21-27 with a visit to your local library! The Boca Raton Public Library can be found in two locations: Downtown Library 400 NW 2nd Avenue Boca Raton, FL 33432 Spanish River Library 1501 NW Spanish River Blvd. Boca Raton, FL 33431 Art in Public Places Many of the artist Janis Colon’s works include Florida scenes. She has also illustrated inspirational children's books. According to Ruth Gellis, “A day without painting is a day without sun.” Painting in watercolor & acrylic, Ruth’s works include landscapes, seascapes & botanical renderings. Another favorite modality is paper collage. These exhibitions will be on display during the month of September at the James A. Rutherford Community Center in Patch Reef Park and can be viewed Monday – Friday, 8 am – 10 pm; Saturday, 8 am – 5 pm; and Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm. For more information call 561-367-7035. September 2014 page 6 Dune Planting On August 16, 2014 in honor of its 140th birthday celebration and as part of its companywide Annual Day of Service, ADT partnered with the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) and the City of Boca Raton to conduct a volunteer dune planting of over 2,000 sea oats along the dunes edge at Red Reef Park in Boca Raton. Over 50 volunteers from ADT, YEA and the City of Boca Raton attended the event and worked together for over four hours planting and watering in the sea oats along a portion of Red Reef Park. “ADT is proud to call Boca Raton home, fortunate to base our headquarters in one of the most beautiful communities in our State and Country,” said Alex Price, ADT’s Community Relations Manager, “What better way to celebrate 140 years, than by partnering with YEA and the City of Boca Raton to help protect the natural coastal habitat that helps make this community so special.” After Hurricane Sandy in 2013, the City constructed an emergency dune repair project along the northern portion of Red Reef Park. The dunes are the primary protective mechanism for this stretch of beach, an essential component of the coastal dune/hammock ecosystem. Planting native vegetation along the dune repair project provides enhanced stability, additional habitat and increased protection against storms and beach erosion. Maintaining a healthy, storm-resistant dune system provides upland structure stability and protection of a hurricane evacuation route. (Pictured below: before, during and after the dune planting) Upcoming City Events All events are free unless otherwise indicated. BRAZILIAN BEAT Saturday, September 6, 6:00 pm Sanborn Square, 72 N.
