(FJH Music Company)
Originally written for wind ensemble at an outdoor festival,
Brian Balmages transcribed his composition, Summer Dances, for
symphony orchestra in 2012. The piece is exciting and dance-like
with a fast-slow-fast form featuring short solos by the clarinet,
bassoon, oboe, horn, and trumpet.

(Edwin F. Kalmus)
Irish Tune From County Derry was one of the best known of Percy
Aldridge Grainger’s settings based on an Irish folk melody. This
version was prepared for Leopold Stokowski who recorded it in 1950.
Chorale, Scherzo, and Dance is a three movement work for string
ensemble commissioned by and dedicated to Win Garland and the
composer’s friends at Richland High School in Johnstown,
Pennsylvania. While the Chorale is a slow, richly scored movement,
the Scherzo and Dance are energetic, quick paced pieces. Utilizing a
variety of meters throughout, the rhythmic framework of the work
adds fun, character, and vitality.
After 90 years of Russian rule, Finland grew weary of Tsar Nickolas
II who stripped all but symbolic power from the Finnish senate and
censored the press. In 1899, artists and activists responded in support
of censored journalists with several events in Helsinki. Finland’s
greatest composer of that time, Jean Sibelius, composed a simple and
brief piece called Finland Awakes for the occasion, whose singable
melody helped to stir a growing sentiment of Finnish nationalism. The
following year Sibelius revised his score and titled it Finlandia. It was
premiered by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society on July 2, 1900 who
then performed it on tour throughout Europe (ending at the Paris
World Exposition) and made Sibelius an international sensation.
Ironically, Sibelius did not consider this work as important as his
others yet this is the work for which he is most popularly remembered
and whose melody is the unofficial Finnish national anthem. An
ominous brass introduction, hymn-like woodwind and string melody,
and triumphant ending are hallmarks of his tone poem.
