Veronica Fuxa, NOC student and author, will share about her novel Red Smoke. This event will be livestreamed to Tonkawa in
the Walcher Conference Center and in Stillwater at Fountain Square 108. And, from 7-8:30 p.m., Marion Lazan, Holocaust
survivor and author, will share about her experiences. It will be livestreamed to Tonkawa in the Walcher Conference Center and
in Stillwater in Cowboy Mall 180. The event will not be livestreamed via the NOC website as is shown on the poster. All

NOC Instructor Frankie
Wood-Black 2016 Chemist of
the Year
The 2016 Oklahoma Chemist of the Year is Dr. Frankie WoodBlack.
Dr. Frankie Wood-Black was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She
received her BS degree from Central State University in Edmond, OK in
1984, and her MBA from Regis University in 2002. Wood-Black earned
her PhD in physics at Oklahoma State University in 1989.
Wood-Black accepted a position as Research Scientist at Phillips
Petroleum Company followed by a position as an Environmental
Scientist. She became a Technology Site Manager, and later a
Technology Services marketing Manager at Phillips Petroleum. After
working at a number of positions at ConocoPhillips from 2002-2007, she
joined Trihydro Corporation as Senior Air Professional. In 2013, Dr.
Wood-Black accepted a position as Principal of Sophic Pursuits and
Adjunct Professor at OSU. In 2014, Wood-Black became Director of
Process Technology at Northern Oklahoma College.
Dr. Frankie Wood-Black's research focus in an industrial setting has been on plant environmental compliance and air
regulation, safety, and crisis management. Her work with the ACS involved many initiatives, especially in chemical health,
public outreach, and career development.

About the Oklahoma Chemist Award
The Oklahoma Chemist Award was initiated in 1971 and was primarily started by Dr. George R. Waller who was a faculty
member in the Biochemistry Department at Oklahoma State University. Oklahoma is divided into five sections of the American
Chemical Society, and each Section agreed to support this award on an annual basis. The concept for the award was to honor
truly outstanding contributions made to the science and to the state by a chemist in recent years within the state of Oklahoma.
Although originally designed to honor research chemists, an amendment was introduced in the 1980s to allow candidates to be
nominated who had made extraordinary contributions to the area of chemical education whether it be to youth or to the public in
general. Six such awards have been made to chemical educators over the years since the inception of the award in 1971. One
award was to be given each year if a suitable candidate was identified from the research community or from education. The
original award consisted of $500 and a handsome plaque formed in the shape of the state of Oklahoma.
One member from each of the five Sections was appointed to compose a reviewing committee to accept nominations which
were to be received around early February of each new year. The date was to permit sufficient time for the winner to be
selected and to receive the cash award and plaque at the next annual Pentasectional Meeting in the spring. The Pentasectional
Meeting brings together chemists from academia and from industry within the state one time each year to present research
results. It is the largest meeting of chemists in Oklahoma.
The OKLAHOMA CHEMIST AWARD is the most prestigious award given to a chemist within Oklahoma. The award now
consists of $1000 as well as a handsome plaque in the shape of the state of Oklahoma. A brief description of the
accomplishments by the recipient are engraved on the plaque and are submitted, along with a photo of the winner, to Chemical
and Engineering News for official publication in a forthcoming issue. Chemical and Engineering News is a major publication of

NOC Enid Band Sets Spring Concert
The NOC Enid Community Band and Community Jazz Band will celebrate spring with a concert Tuesday, April 19,
according to David Toelle, director of the bands.
Beginning at 7 p.m. in Bivins Chapel, located in the Marshall Building at NOC Enid, the 17-piece Jazz Band will
swing out with tunes such as the theme from the Family Guy television series composed by Walter Murphy; “All Blues”
by Miles Davis, one of the great innovators of jazz; the well-known standard “Summertime,” from George Gershwin’s
“Porgy and Bess;” “Brass Roots” by Grammy Award winner Don Sebesky; and “Chameleon” by the iconic Herbie
Hancock.
The Community Band, with 37 members, will follow with “Fanfare, Hymn and Dedication” by Ed Huckeby, “Song
Without Words” from Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F and two movements, “Chaconne” and “March” from Holst’s First
Suite in E-Flat, considered one of the cornerstone masterworks in the concert band repertoire.
Also on the program are “Alice in Wonderland,” from Disney Legends honoree Danny Elfman’s score for the
movie, and selections from “The Star Wars Saga” by John Williams.
Admission is free.

Newkirk sophomore Baylie Wilson added, “Adversity creates opportunity.”
"Every team will face adversity, but what they do with that adversity defines their success,” Morrill said. “Our Maverick
cheerleaders have worked hard to raise money, learned new skills, overcome injuries and setbacks and performed well in the
classroom this year. I couldn't be more proud of this team. They pushed me to coach them to the next level and it's paid off. This
is one season I will never forget—a memory that will last a lifetime!"

competition in Anaheim, Calif.

but [they] have really put in the time and work to achieve every recognition they've gotten this season. I am very proud of them
and excited to see what next season brings.”

NOC Alumni Banquet set for April 9
Dr. Gordon S. Laird of Morrison and M. Scott Carter of Oklahoma City will each receive the 2016 Northern
Oklahoma College Distinguished Alumni Award, according to Jill Green, NOC director of alumni and
community relations.
The highest honor that Northern bestows upon outstanding alumni, the award recognizes the achievements of
former students whose personal lives, professional achievements and community service exemplify the
objectives of the college.
Laird, Class of 1962, earned an Associate of Science degree in Pre-Medicine, and Carter, Class of 1983,
earned an Associate of Arts degree in Journalism.
The two honorees will be inducted into the NOC Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame during ceremonies at
the annual Alumni and Friends banquet set for 5 p.m. April 9 at the Renfro Center, NOC Tonkawa.

Players of the Week

Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa
Players of the Week are Tawn Neidy, softball,
and Ariel Burgos-Garcia, baseball.
Head softball coach Kadie Berlin and
assistant baseball coach Shawn Neale announced
the selections for the week ending April 3.
For the week Neidy hit .400, scoring 8 runs.
She had 3 doubles and a triple, starting multiple
rallies. She also had 15 put-outs.
“Tawn covers a lot of ground in the outfield
and is a great lead-off batter for us,” Berlin said.
Niedy is a freshman from Chickasha and a
graduate of Chickasha High School.
Garcia faced 28 batters to pitch a 7-inning, 1-run masterpiece in a complete game
win against nationally ranked Connors State College at Warner. According to the
NJCAA, his record is 6 wins and 1 loss.
Garcia is a sophomore right hand pitcher from Pompano Beach, Fla. and a graduate
of Mavericks High School of Central Broward County, Fla. He has earned his second
nomination as Player of the Week for the season.

Jets notch 30th win
[Saturday was a historic day in the 16-year history of the NOC Enid baseball program]

Saturday was a historic day in the 16-year history of the Northern
Oklahoma College Enid baseball program.
The Jets pounded out 15 hits, including a two-run homer by Carlos
Andjuar in the sixth, to beat Rose State 10-8 at David Allen Memorial
Ballpark for their 10th straight win and boost their record to 30-3 coming
into Wednesday’s Oklahoma Collegiate Conference opener with Western
Oklahoma.
It’s the first time NOC Enid has come into conference with 30 wins.
“It was a goal that we have set,’’ said Jets coach Raydon Leaton, “but
as we talked about before, wins one through 29 are just as important as the 30th. It wasn’t any more important than any other.
We’re going to try to continue to win every time we step on the field.’’
“Coach Leaton said it’s never been done before in conference play so it’s a pretty big deal,’’ said outfielder Will Sprayberry,
who was one-for-three and scored a run. “Everyone was hitting today. It was a closer game than we wanted, but it was still good
for us.’’
The Raiders had 14 hits, including home runs by Garron Bates and Paul Kropf. Rose State scored three runs in the eighth to
cut the lead to 10-8, but Sprayberry — making his first pitching appearance of the spring — struck out two and got Hayden
Proctor to fly out in retiring the side in the ninth.
Sprayberry had thrown 222/3 innings in relief as a freshman last year, but his pitching had been restricted to intrasquad
games this spring until now.
“It was kind of tough playing the outfield and then going in, but I was really happy to do it,’’ he said. “I thought it went real
well. I had fun. I was just resting up before conference play.’’
Sprayberry, who came into the game hitting .402, said he wasn’t for sure how much he will be used on the mound in
conference games. He had 21 strikeouts last season with a 5.46 ERA.
“I think it will depend on the situation ... maybe in lefty-right matchups,’’ he said.
“We had wanted to protect him a little bit,’’ Leaton said. “He’s so valuable to us offensively, so we wanted to wait until the
second half until we used him as a closer. You saw what he could do. He is pretty effective.’’
Every Jets starter had at least one hit as NOC Enid scored two runs in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and
three in the sixth.
Andujar gave the Jets a 9-5 lead with a two-run shot over the left field fence in the sixth.
“It was a fastball inside,’’ he said. “I didn’t think it was going to go out when I hit it, but I knew they weren’t going to catch
it.’’
It was his sixth homer of the season, and his three RBI on the day gave him a team-high 46 for the season.

“It was a good day to hit,’’ Leaton said. “There were two good-hitting teams out there today and when pitchers made
mistakes, they made them pay for it. That’s part of it. You got to learn the win the 10-8 games as much as you do the 2-0 games.
We made some good adjustments at the plate.’’
J.K. Hadlock raised his record to 4-0 in getting the win. He pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned.
He struck out four, walked a batter and hit two more.

The world-traveling Roustabouts of Northern Oklahoma
College will appear in a dazzling display of scintillating color,
whirlwind motion and superb sound on the Tonkawa campus
for their annual benefit concert Saturday, April 9.
The concert opens at 7:30 p.m. in the Kinzer Performing
Arts Center (KPAC). Tickets may be purchased at the KPAC

ships sailing the Gulf of Mexico have thrilled to the troupe’s non-stop singing and dancing.

Available April 11
Ticket reservations for the 21st annual Northern Oklahoma
College Gala will be accepted beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, April
11. The Gala is set for 7 p.m. Sunday, April 24 in the Kinzer
Performing Arts Center at NOC Tonkawa, 1220 East Grand
Avenue.
General admission tickets are $20 each, nonrefundable, and
tickets for children under five years old are discouraged. Since
seating is limited, a maximum of four tickets per person will be
available. Reservations will not be accepted through voicemail or
email and cannot be made before April 11.
To purchase tickets via credit card, patrons may call the Office of
Development and Community Relations located in the Vineyard
Library-Administration Building at 580.628.6214. Northern accepts
MasterCard, Visa and Discover.
Tickets may be purchased in person by credit card, cash or check
at the Office of Development and Community Relations. Tickets not
picked up in advance at that office will be held in the foyer of the
Kinzer Performing Arts Center for pickup between 5:30 and 6:30
p.m. the evening of the performance. The box office will be open
from 6 to 7:30 p.m. should tickets still be available for purchase.
Internationally noted conductor Gerald Steichen will direct the
Gala in a program of light opera and Broadway show tunes
featuring outstanding opera artists Laquita Mitchell, soprano, and
Glenn Seven Allen, tenor. They will be joined by NOC music
faculty Dineo Heilmann, Chad Anderson Shannon Bradford,
Edward Dixon and Brandon Haynes; the NOC College Choir; and
the Gala Orchestra, comprising members of area symphony
orchestras including Oklahoma City and Wichita.

NOC to honor distinguished alums April 9
Award-winning journalist M. Scott Carter, Class of 1983, and eminent surgeon Dr. Gordon P. Laird, Class of 1962, will be
inducted into the Northern Oklahoma College Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame April 9. Ceremonies will take place during
the NOC Alumni and Friends Reunion Dinner at NOC Tonkawa.
The public is invited to the induction ceremony and all NOC Alumni and Friends of the college are encouraged to attend.

Carter received his Associate of Arts degree in Journalism from NOC where he served as editor of the NOC Maverick
newspaper from 1981 until 1983 and worked as a staff reporter-photographer for the Blackwell Journal-Tribune. He earned
Bachelor of Arts (2010) and Master of Professional Writing (2014) degrees in Journalism/Professional Writing from the
University of Oklahoma.
Among the positions he has held are media specialist for the Oklahoma State Senate and senior media specialist for the
House of Representatives; political and general assignment reporter for the Norman Transcript; and capitol bureau chief for the
Oklahoma City Journal Record. As Director of Marketing and Communications for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library
System, he developed the state's first unified literacy marketing campaign, Read Y'all.
Currently he serves as Director of Investigative Communications for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma.
Throughout his career, Carter has garnered more than 60 awards and honors, including Best Reporting Portfolio for 2015
from the Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, four Sweepstakes Awards from the
Associated Press for his investigative and public service stories and Best Young Adult Novel for 2012 from Foreword The
Magazine.
His stories and essays have appeared in dozens of newspapers throughout the country, including The Dallas Times Herald,
Boston Globe and The Kansas City Star, as well as in United Press International and Associated Press. He has authored two
novels with a third scheduled for release in the fall.
Carter and his wife, Karen, have six children and live in Oklahoma City.
Laird earned his Associate of Science degree in Pre-Medicine at Northern where he served as Biology Club president,
captained the football team and was an O Club member. He was instrumental in initiating the annual NOC Maverick Alumni
Luncheon in Tulsa, attended by former Northern athletes from the football and baseball era of the 1950s and 60s.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Oklahoma (1964) and his Doctor of Osteopathic
Medicine degree from the Kansas City Health Science Center.
With more than 40 years of medical experience, Laird has performed 21,000 surgical procedures. He has practiced surgery
at Alliance Blackwell Hospital since 2006 and surgery and family medicine at Pawnee since 1978. From 1969-1974 he
practiced family medicine at Tuttle. He has participated in Medical Ministries International with surgery rotations at clinics in
Mexico, Haiti, Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda.
He is board certified by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) in general surgery and a Fellow with
ACOS, in addition to the American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners in family practice.
Laird is the past president of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association and the past chairman of
the Oklahoma Foundation of Medical Quality. He serves as an
adjunct professor at the Oklahoma State University College of
Medicine and is a member of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Board of
Medical Examiners.
He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Pawnee, a 32nd
degree Mason and an Adkar Shriner. He and his wife, Sherri, have
six children, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Registration will take place from 4:30 to 5 p.m. April 9 in the
Renfro Center lobby with dinner at 5 p.m. in the Renfro Center at
NOC Tonkawa. After the dinner, guests are invited to attend the
Roustabouts Benefit Show at 7:30 p.m. in the Kinzer Performing

DMI is now accepting applications; The Power to Create
The Digital Media Institute (DMI) at Northern Oklahoma College, Tonkawa, is now accepting applications for the 20162017school year. Applications can be downloaded at: dmi.noc.edu
Brad Matson, NOC Digital Media Institute director said, “The DMI program is designed to examine the latest technologies and
techniques used in professional animation and design and bring that experience into our classroom. We offer a comprehensive
curriculum that can help students gain digital design and animation skills as well as experience in the real world production
environment. ”
The students have worked on a several real world projects: Magnetic Solutions and DMI students participated in the Governors
Cup. This project was modeled and animated by DMI students to simulate the resistance of an electromagnetics and superconducting
magnets to create clean and efficient turbine energy. The students also created an animation of the boilers exploding that caused the
sinking of the Sultana, the worst maritime disaster in American history, a documentary produced in Hollywood. They also created
over 30 short promotional segments for the 25th Anniversary of Remington Park and for their 25th Running of the Oklahoma Derby,
as well as many other professional projects to give the students professional production experience.
“The DMI program redefines reality by focusing on specific methods used to transform ideas and concepts of digital media into
creative digital portfolios and demo reels that show the skills needed for today’s competitive employment environment. After
graduation from the Digital Media Institute the students will have the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate their ideas
through the art of advanced computer graphics in order to continue their education in a specific field of study or to gain entry-level
work and employment that could offer greater challenges in gaming, motion graphics, visual effects, and video/film production.”
“All students will be immersed into the essentials of broadcast design, 2D and 3D animation, game design, visual effects, digital
filmmaking, video production, and interactive web and DVD authoring. These core competencies provide the basis for the specialized
instruction specific within the Digital Media Institute. Thus, whether it is 3D modeling and animation, graphic design for print,
broadcast or gaming, visual effects, web technologies, or combining new media experiences, students will gain the skills necessary not
only to work effectively in the existing areas of digital media production but to help shape the future of technology as an advanced
student or an employee as well.”
Matson said, “DMI’s educational experience in animation and digital media can lead to jobs in several industries. In the
entertainment industry job offerings exist in video game asset creation, broadcast design, visual effects, video and digital film
production. Other job opportunities are in the fields of government, healthcare, military, and industrial professions with simulations
and animations, advertising, communications, and marketing: commercial spots, bumpers, rebranding, social media promotions,
station identity and corporate identity. DMI sits at the forefront of educational experiences. We are the only school in the expanded
mid-west that houses a sixty (60) seat farm, the biggest arsenal of industry software, and emerging technologies that are being tested
to be included in the near future of DMI’s curriculum: projection mapping for the Roustabout show and exterior buildings, testing
oculus technologies, and 3d printing for metal, plastics, sandstone, ceramics, wax, and gypsum.
“There are several companies that contact me when they have a position to fill, so the opportunity is there. In fact, CVW Media in
Norman has six (6) DMI graduates working for them. Kevin Hanley, CEO of CVW Media, loves the creativity and the work ethic of
DMI students, so he hires some of my students every year. Digital Tutors dba Purlasight, world-wide leader in online media currently
has seven (7) graduates currently employed at the studio.”
Coursework in the Digital Media Animation and Design program include: 3D modeling, texturing, animation and rendering in
Autodesk’s award winning Creation Suite: Maya, 3DS Max, and Mudbox; motion graphics for broadcast and film with Cinema 4D,
Adobe Photoshop and After Effects; nonlinear digital video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro; designing and creating web sites for
showcasing student talents using Adobe’s Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash; and authoring DVD’s for student demo reels with
Adobe’s Encore and Audition.
Matson is a recipient of the prestigious 2009 DaVinci Fellows Award which is given to college instructors for creative thinking in
higher education. Matson’s award was given based on his partnership with “Game=Life,” a video game production company founded
by a Northern DMI graduate, Adam Grantham. Through this partnership, Brad’s students were able to contribute to a medicinal video
game that teaches how diabetics can maintain healthy blood sugar. Brad received a medal and $1000 in recognition for his creative
approach to video design and for giving students practical work experience during their educational program.

Brad Matson graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1988 where he studied film making and video productions. He has
worked in the media field for the past 27 years with TV studios, film companies, Director for the Breckenridge Film Festival, Digital
Tutors, Worked on scenes from Hollywood films (Dumb and Dumber, Christmas Vacation) commercial work for Remington Park,
RSI, AT&T and Cingular, and has worked and taught at Northern for over 15 years.
Matson’s honors/awards include: the Telly Award 2003 (Oscars for Education and Broadcast Graphics), Distinguished Faculty
Award 2010, NISOD Excellence Award 2011, Nominated for the Oklahoma Gold Medal for Excellence in Teaching Award 2011,
2012, 2013, and 2014, Finalist for Digital Tutors Instructor of the Year 2012 and Nominated for Digital Tutors Instructor of the Year
2013.

the March Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
(HLSR).

They exhibited the Champion Suffolk Ram and Res. Champion Suffolk Ewe as well as the Reserve Champion Hampshire

SUMMARY: Responsible for plumbing maintenance and repair at the Tonkawa location.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:
 Maintaining, servicing, and repairing all sanitary lines, grease lines, traps, and interceptors.
 Performing leak repairs as needed.
 Locating underground pipelines and leaks test equipment and instrumentation.
 Maintaining all flame, water, natural gas, and pressure controls, as well as all other safety devices.
 Maintaining, servicing, and repairing all potable water systems as it pertains to NOC Facilities, including, but not
limited to all water softeners, water heaters and all potable backflow preventers (circulating pumps, tempering valves,
mixing valves.
 Maintaining, servicing, and repairing all NOC plumbing systems to ensure a safe and sanitary environment, including,
but not limited to water closets, urinals, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, and all associated piping by complying with
all NSF, ADA, and state plumbing codes and regulations and performing other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND SPECIFICATIONS: To perform the role of a Plumber successfully, an individual must be able to perform
each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability
required. Consistent attendance and punctuality is a job requirement. Valid Oklahoma Driver's License required to operate
company vehicles. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions,
and procedure manuals. Ability to use extendable boom forklift, forklift (sit down, stand-up, or motorized pallet jacks),
high reach (aerial lift), backhoe/frontend loader, and tractor required.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFACTIONS: High School degree, diploma or a GED equivalent qualification from a certified
college. Bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree or diploma in mechanical engineering or any other related field of
study, a valid journeyman license and 2 – 3 years of experience of working as a plumber.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an
individual to successfully perform the essential functions of the Plumber job. While performing the duties of this job, the
individual is required to lift greater than 25 pounds or more; will require repetitive reaching, pushing/pulling, bending,
twisting; will require working at heights greater than 4 feet, will require welding, cutting, brazing, and working with an
