PARISH FINANCE OVERVIEW
A message from Fr. Lou Tylka
I am pleased to share with our parish the financial report for the fiscal year 2015. By sharing
this information it provides transparency and accountability in our stewardship of the parish’s
resources.
Much has happened in the past year and we have been blessed by the generosity of so many. Perhaps
the highlight of the year was the visit by Archbishop Blase Cupich for Easter Sunday Mass! It was a
terrific day for us as a parish. I was proud to ‘show off’ our vibrant parish and I know he thoroughly
enjoyed spending his first Easter as our Archbishop with us.
What I have come to know in my first year as pastor of St. Julie is that we do have a wonderful
parish. A parish that is alive in sharing our faith and a parish that is generous in supporting the work
of the Church. As a pastor, I am very grateful for all that folks do to make St. Julie a special place.
While we have much to be thankful for we also have challenges to confront. It is my firm belief that
together we can and will succeed in strengthening our parish. Allow me to comment on three fiscal
challenges.
1. EXPENDITURES: I believe that we have done a good job in attempting to control our expenditures and that we need to remain vigilant of our expenses while searching for additional cost
saving measures. Some moves are seemingly drastic, such as adjusting our office hours, and
some come as short term expenses with a long term savings, such as switching some lighting
fixtures to LED lighting. There needs to be a strong mentality that seeks ways of investing in
our parish by means which are both beneficial and prudent in expenses.
2. CAPITAL: We are blessed to have great facilities that support our life as a parish; in fact our
buildings are in much better shape than many other parishes. We are confronted with the reality
that in a number of cases we will need to do necessary repairs. The goal is not to defer maintenance but rather to maintain a regular schedule of updating and repairs. In some cases parts of
our campus are at the point where the life expectancy of use is coming to term.
3. REVENUES: People of our parish are generous. Still, the need exists for us to encourage greater
support. We all need to ask the question, is my donation to the church truly sacrificial? I encourage all of us to, not only prayerfully consider our level of giving, but also to utilize new opportunities for supporting St. Julie (in electronic giving through GiveCentral.org or participating in
fundraising nights at a local business).
Again, I offer my gratitude for your ongoing support of St. Julie Billiart Parish. Your greatest
contribution comes not in what is put in the offertory basket - important as that is - but in giving
your presence to making our Church alive.
Peace & Prayers,
Ordinary people doing extraordinary things
with faith in the good God
and the goodness of each other

NEW AND NOTABLE IN MINISTRY
Fiscal Year 2014-2015
Liturgy and Music (reported by Deanne Tumpich)
During Advent, a revised setting for the Mass of Light
by David Haas was introduced at St. Julie. It is the third
Mass setting added to our parish repertoire since the
Roman Missal was revised in 2011.
St. Julie Parish was delighted to welcome the new
Archbishop of Chicago, Blase Cupich, as presider for
our 10:30 a.m. Easter Mass. Advance publicity by local
TV, radio and print media created extraordinary public
interest, requiring careful planning to accommodate
anticipated crowds and media presence at the Mass.
Archbishop Cupich was quite engaging and, after Mass,
he graciously greeted many in the Parish Hall. We
thank Archbishop Cupich for breaking with tradition
and honoring St. Julie Parish by celebrating his first
Easter in Chicago here with us.
Our Art & Environment Ministry worked diligently to
design, create and decorate the worship space and
narthex for Easter. This included beautifully colored
cloth swags and branch arrangements in church and a
colorful hanging mobile in the narthex, crafted from
cloth, embroidery hoops, and strings of beads. The
mobile became a focal point of discussion and received
“rave” reviews.
On April 17, shortly after Easter, we mourned the death
of our shepherd, Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago,
Francis Cardinal George. On that day, St. Julie joined
with other parishes of the archdiocese in tolling our
church bells for fifteen minutes. Black and purple
bunting was hung, and a small memorial was set up in
the narthex to remind parishioners of his life and death.
Prayers were offered throughout the weekend.
A Holy Hour for Life was celebrated on the Feast of
Our Lady of Fatima on May 13. About 52 people
gathered for the rosary, Litany of Mary, hymns,
adoration and benediction in the church. It was a graced
time for those attending.
Community Life (reported by Sr. Gael Gensler)
In August, 2014, Fr. Lou Tylka and 2 staff members
participated in the Amazing Parish conference. A parish
pilgrimage to Italy, beginning September 22, included a
papal audience with Pope Francis.
October was busy, including introduction of Jesus Story
Time (for moms, grandmas and little ones), the 50th
Jubilee celebration of Sr. Gael Gensler OSF, a Family
Fishing Outing at McCarthy Park, a presentation of the life
of St. Julie Billiart by Sr. Pat Pieper, SNDdeN, and a 50’s
fun “Elvis Night.” Fr. Peter Hereley, OP, spoke at all
Masses one weekend encouraging people to sign up to
sponsor an individual through the organization Unbound.
Over 125 St. Julie households signed up.
At Christmas, the parish handed out 2000 copies of the
book My Life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ, as a gift
to parishioners. In January, Peace and Justice ministry
participated in an information meeting on human
trafficking.
During Lent, small groups were formed to discuss My Life
with the Saints. Our Lenten Parish Mission was led by
Fr. Brian Walker, OP. A three day retreat for adults was
held at the Canticle in Clinton, IA.
St. Julie hosted vicariate ministry training for the Ministry
of Care, the first time it was held in the morning. Over 35
people participated. Peace and Justice traveled to the
Rochelle area to assist with tornado recovery there. In
June, the parish hosted a gathering of 35 RCIA ministers,
co-sponsored with LTP and the ACTA Foundation.
Religious Education (reported by Pat Kmak)
The eighth grade students who celebrated the Sacrament of
Confirmation on April 12 were prepared using a unique
approach called Decision Point, published by Dynamic
Catholic. The series is based on Matthew Kelly’s
principles “Be Bold, Be Catholic” and be the “best version
of yourself” that you can be. The students enjoyed
watching the videos and engaging in the ensuing
discussion. The series will continually be updated.
Youth Group - TNT (reported by Sheila Pluchar)
In June, 40 of St. Julie’s finest teens traveled to
Steubenville, Ohio where they served people less fortunate
with open minds and compassionate hearts. Thanks to
some of our generous parishioners, we were able to send a
few teens who might not have otherwise been able to
experience a mission trip. While in Ohio, some of our
teens were interviewed by the local television station.
Never let it be said that St. Julie Teens don’t have fun.
They played volleyball and softball with SSYMA, which
is a group of parishes in the south suburbs. Volleyball was
a ton of fun and even though we didn’t reach finals, we
stayed to cheer on the teens from St. Francis of Assisi (go
Fr. Artur!). Softball was another story. We took first
place in our division, the top division! Go TNT!
Eight out of the ten outstanding Seniors from the Andrew
High School 2015 graduating class were from St. Julie and
active in the youth group. That is amazing!
