INFERNO – AN OUTDATED FORM?
The INFERNO has cult status. Probably no one in the endurance scene doubts this fact. Nevertheless,
a slight drop in the number of participants has been recorded in recent years, especially in the Team
Trophy teams of four. Potential INFERNO participants can be divided into three groups: athletes in
Group One say to themselves; «The INFERNO is still too much for me, I'm not ready for it yet!» For
Group Two, the INFERNO is just the thing as an individual or in a team. And for Group Three, the
INFERNO is a good introductory competition to go on to tackle really tough races (such as a triple
triathlon). We, the organizers, wish to impress on endurance athletes that a top performance in a
team is also extremely rewarding. Sharing the thrill of the race with team mates in the transition
zones of the INFERNO Triathlon is an incomparably exciting experience! We want to continue to offer
a great competition for teams and hope that your enthusiasm in 2016 will animate many triathletes
or team athletes to join the start in 2017, whether as a team of four, a couple or an individual.
Bringt mich weiter.

Something that is often given too little recognition in the media and to a certain
extent by us internally, is the extremely attractive Half-Marathon up the Schilthorn.
As a former runner, I can say without doubt that there are few mountain runs
in Switzerland that can offer such a natural spectacle as the INFERNO Half-Marathon. The perfect way to prepare for the planned start in the following year is
the Team Trophy, where the runners on the final leg complete the course from
Stechelberg to Mürren. This is where you get to know the first section of the
course and can assess the challenge presented by the remaining height metres to
the Schilthorn. The INFERNO Half-Marathon is a typical race where you run with
each other and not against each other. Anyone who ends their running career,
without having competed in this race will definitely have missed something!
A sporting event like the INFERNO can only be carried out thanks to considerable and tireless
commitment. It would be utterly impossible to hold this event without our dynamic, motivated helpers and the financial support of our sponsors. Our patrons and partners also make an enormous
contribution to its success. Our heartfelt thanks go to all these individuals, companies and institutions. Together, once again this year, we are en route to creating an unforgettable running event for
each and every participant. The INFERNO – an outdated form? Definitely not!

ORGANIZATION
Following considerable hard work to establish the INFERNO Triathlon,
it has grown from a «competition for a few crazy people» into a cult
event on the endurance sport scene and thus one of the major summer events in the Bernese Oberland. This year the INFERNO Triathlon
will be held for the 19th time, the popular INFERNO Team Trophy for
the 17th time. The INFERNO Half Marathon has also become well
established. It would not be possible to carry out the INFERNO event
without the strong support of our many loyal partners from local
enterprises, from tourism and cantonal and municipal institutions, as
well as from a large number of private individuals. The OC thanks the
INFERNO partners most sincerely for their vital support!

SWIMMING WARM UP
Streckenposten mit Trillerpfeife:
ACHTUNG GEFAHR !
Strandbad (Lido) Thun is available for warm-up swimming sessions
before the competition.
The non-swimming team members who want to experience the
transition of their athletes from swimming to racing bike can travel
with the racing-bike team members on the MS Berner Oberland
from Thun to Oberhofen and also back to Thun. This offer is also
available to escorts and spectators for a small contribution towards
costs of CHF 5.– per person each way. Payment on board. (Starts,
finishes, transition areas, pages 26/27).
WARM CLOTHING
It can get cold in the Alps even in summer. This is especially the case
for triathletes who are underway between Mürren and the Schilthorn
in the late afternoon and early evening: organize warm, dry clothing
in Mürren (see competition rules, pages 38 – 41).
Windschatten- Fahren
(Drafting) ist nicht gestattet
Berglauf
Das Tragen eines
Hartschalen-Helms ist auf der
ganzen Strecke (auch in Aufstiegen)
obligatorisch
ALTERNATIVE COURSE
Keine Begleitung von Läufern
durch Fahrzeuge und Bikes
If the swimming discipline is cancelled because of weather conditions,
it will be replaced by a running discipline.
BAN ON MOTOR VEHICLES
A ban on motor vehicles will apply to the sections Grosse Scheidegg
(from Schwarzwaldalp to Grindelwald), Kleine Scheidegg (from Grindelwald Grund to Lauterbrunnen) and to Grön (between Sigriswil
and Beatenberg). These areas may only be reached by bike, on foot
or with public transport.
CLEAR VISIBILITY
COMPETITION RULES
The Triathlon and Team Trophy are carried out in accordance with
the Swiss Triathlon Federation rules. Slipstreaming is prohibited.
Additional rules valid for the INFERNO events are found on pages
38 – 41. Participants in the Team Trophy: Please specifically note the
CONDENSED RULE BOOK (page 41 and on the back of the start
number bib)!
ADDITIONAL CATERING
Thanks to Isostar, the official INFERNO catering service, there is no
basic need for additional nutrition. Personal catering for athletes may
only be provided at the official catering points (competition rules,
pages 38 – 41).
BIKE BOTTLES
ATHLETE BRIEFING
Bike bottles will be removed from bikes. Athletes who wish to
keep their personal bottles are requested to remove them
themselves.
Last-minute changes and route amendments will be published
on the website (www.inferno.ch) at the beginning of August.
This is very important when swimming at dawn. Please wear lightlensed swim goggles.
TICKETS/TRANSPORT
RUNNING SECTIONS
TICKETS SCHILTHORN AERIAL CABLEWAY: The following journeys with the Schilthorn aerial cableway are included in the starting
fee – tickets will be included with the starting documents. They are transferrable and can also used by escorts (on Saturday, 20.8.2016
also valid for the BLM section Lauterbrunnen – Mürren rail & cableway or reverse)
TRIATHLON: 2 Stechelberg – Schilthorn round trips, valid from 18 to 21 August 2016
TEAM TROPHY: 4 Stechelberg – Mürren round trips, valid from 18 to 21 August 2016
Participants with start numbers can travel free on the following sections of the Schilthorn aerial cableway on Saturday 20 August 2016:
TRIATHLON: Mürren – Stechelberg and Schilthorn – Mürren
TEAM TROPHY: Stechelberg – Mürren and Mürren – Stechelberg
HALF MARATHON: Schilthorn – Stechelberg or by BLM Mürren – Lauterbrunnen rail & cableway
It’s likely that most athletes will have to push their mountain bike
shortly before Kleine Scheidegg. Please wear appropriate shoes for
this around 400-metre stretch!
22
NUMBER The INFERNO road bike and mountain bike stretches include several
spectacular downhill runs that require riding skill as well as considerable care and attention from the athletes. The stretches from Beatenberg to Interlaken, Grosse Scheidegg to Grindelwald and Kleine
Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen via Wengen are dangerous if not ridden
responsibly and with care!
Escorts and fans are very welcome! Please note that the accompaniment of participants along the competition course is prohibited and can
lead to disqualification (competition rules, pages 38 – 41).

MEDICAL CARE
THE ENTIRE INFERNO FAMILY WISHES TO EXPRESS ITS
WHOLEHEARTED THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO ALL
HELPERS !
BASIC PRINCIPLE
In the event of an accident, competitors must provide first
aid and then immediately notify the next first-aid or marshal
post.
MEDICAL SERVICES
EMERGENCY 144
MEDICAL AND FIRST-AID SERVICES
In past years, the organizing committee has constantly improved
rescue and alerting procedures. And so a few years ago the role
of Assistants to the Race Director (ARD) was established. The
specific task of the ARD is in the event of an accident, following
successful medical care, to look after organizational matters,
escorts, materials and contact with the OC. In this way we want
to ensure that medical care is provided as quickly and efficiently
as possible and also that everything else runs smoothly. The best
rescue service is the one that is least used: we wish all participants
an accident-free event!
Ten doctors are on standby between Thun and the Schilthorn. The
hospitals in Thun and Interlaken are informed of the event and
two ambulances and three air-rescue organization also provide
backup services. Around 100 trained first-aiders are on duty at
36 first-aid posts. An additional boat with a doctor is in attendance on the swimming section.

MASSAGE SERVICES
BEOSPOMATEAM – SPORT MASSAGE SERVICE FOR SPORT
EVENTS IN THE BERNESE OBERLAND REGION
The Bernese Oberland Sports Massage Team has provided its
services since 2005. We celebrated our premiere at the Lake
Brienz Run. The Dul-X Sports Massage Service in the Bernese
Oberland was limited to the Jungfrau Marathon, so we decided
to set up our own team in order to provide services at sporting
events in the Bernese Oberland.
We attend the following sporting events: Ka-Po Bern sports day,
Spiezathlon, Stockhorn Half Marathon, Glacier3000Run Gstaad,
Alpenbrevet in Meiringen, INFERNO Triathlon in Mürren and the
Lake Brienz Run.
We are six well-trained and experienced masseuse and masseurs
who for many years have offered massages at many sporting
events, on duty either full or part time. Our team is made up of
Sonja Wiedmer Yafimik (med. masseuse EFA), Beat Strub (medically certified masseur), Hansjörg Wäfler (Sumathu therapist, sport
masseur), Cornelia Uelliger (certified professional masseuse/certified personal trainer), Sandra Brog (sport and wellness masseuse)
and Veronika Gerber-Schuler (certified sport and wellness masseuse). Depending on the size of the event, many other masseure and
masseurs also help out, such as at the INFERNO Triathlon, our
largest event where we have 16 therapists.
Many of us are also involved in the Dul-X Sports Massage service,
including at the Gigathlon and Jungfrau Marathon. We have had
a successful working relationship with Melisana AG (Dul-X) for
many years. We offer free massages with proven Dul-X products
for all participating athletes before and after the competition.
We know from experience that many athletes really appreciate
and enjoy our sport massage service. According to a newspaper
report in the Anzeiger von Saanen, we are virtually looked on as
the angels of the Glacier3000Run!»

24 TH INFERNO HALF MARATHON & 20 TH RELAY RACE
SATURDAY, 20 AUGUST 2016
The INFERNO Half Marathon is the «oldest» of
the INFERNO summer events. With a height
difference of over 2000 metres and the finish
on the 2970-metre-high Schilthorn before
the unique backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau, the «devilish
mountain running race» has lost none of its fascination and challenge.
On the contrary: every year it draws more and more mountain runners
under its spell.
This year’s INFERNO Half Marathon again counts towards the SLV
Trophy. The start is directly beneath the Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen. The course is the same that the triathletes have to master.
The first 11 kilometres of the Half Marathon seem fairly harmless, the
climb of around 800 metres merely a «warm up». Immediately after
the Alpinen Sportzentrum in Mürren comes the first «wall» with the
Höhenlücke and Allmendhubel. The Kanonenrohr (Cannon Barrel),
which is 2 grades steeper, is followed by a 2 km level section of scree
before the mountain runners tackle a last around 1.5 km steep climb
of 400 metres to the Schilthorn summit.

INFERNO Triathlon must check in on Friday, between noon and
17 h at the transition areas in Oberhofen (Hallenbad (Lido) and
Fitnesscenter), Grindelwald (at Grindelwald Grund railway station)
and Stechelberg (bottom station of Schilthorn aerial cableway). The
latest information on the course, weather situation and race organization will be given at the athletes briefing on Friday, 18 h, in the
Alpinen Sportzentrum Mürren. Attendance is strongly recommended.
TIME-MEASUREMENT CHIP: Every athlete receives a time-measurement chip at the Oberhofen check in. The chip must be worn around
the ankle during the race. Every triathlete is personally responsible
for ensuring that the correct chip is worn. Mix-ups lead to errors in
time measurements. The chip must be handed in immediately upon
reaching the finish. A CHF 50.– charge will be made for a lost chip.
ROAD BIKE AND MOUNTAIN BIKE: The bike disciplines are classified as individual time trials without any personal support. Slipstream
riding is prohibited. Referees of Swiss Triathlon check the regulatory
status of the road bikes at the check-in in the transition area at
Oberhofen. Participants must make any necessary changes at a local
bike shop. Riding in the transition area is not allowed. Wearing a
helmet is obligatory (helmet strap closed). This begins before the
bike is taken from the bike stand and ends after the bike is parked.
Failure to do so will lead to a warning; non-compliance will result
in disqualification. The biking sections are not closed to other road
traffic. Traffic regulations must be strictly observed. Violation of
traffic regulations will lead to disqualification.
PLEASE NOTE ! The road bike downhill runs from Beatenberg to
Interlaken and from Grosse Scheidegg to Grindelwald are dangerous.
Participants are required to ride only at a speed that allows them to
stop at any time within half the distance in sight. The mountain-bike
downhill run from Kleine Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen is dangerous
and must be ridden with caution. It is essential to take hikers and
other mountain bikers into consideration. Marshals blowing whistles
denote danger!
PLEASE NOTE: SPECIAL INFERNO REGULATIONS! At especially
dangerous locations (transit through Brienz, the Wetterhorn Grindelwald section etc.) «INFERNO cyclists overtaking prohibited» and «
disqualification red card» signs are displayed. Triathletes who do not
comply may be directly disqualified by local law enforcement bodies
such as the police or traffic wardens without being stopped. The
report must be made to the chief referee of Swiss Triathlon giving
the start number, type of violation, place and time (e.g. start No 007,
riding on left side of road, 11.15 h, between Terrassenweg and church).
The start number of athletes who were given a yellow card (time
penalty) or disqualified will be published on a board at the entrance
to the transition area in Stechelberg. It is up to the participant to sit
out the time penalty or else receive an additional time penalty per
yellow card (Competition Rules of the Swiss Triathlon 4 point penalties). Announcing a warning in the form of a time penalty / Stop &
Go: a warning will be issued at the discretion of the referee. If time
and circumstances permit, the referee may give a warning as follows:
-a whistle or other audible warning signal.
-by showing a yellow card.
-by calling out the athlete’s number and the word(s) «stop» or «time
penalty».
-For safety reasons, the referee may be forced to announce the
warning at a later time.
RUNNING: During the selection of equipment, in particular running
shoes, it should be noted that parts of the course lie in high-alpine
terrain and may be snow covered. The air temperature can drop
considerably between Mürren and the Schilthorn. Recommendation: put on warm, dry clothing in Mürren. Changing clothes is
allowed in the area of the Sportzentrum Mürren and the MürrenAegerten catering point, and may be assisted by personal escorts.
The organizers will set up a clothes depot at the Mürren-Aegerten
catering point. Clothes for this depot must be packed waterproof for
handing in at the athletes briefing. The use of (ski) poles is prohibited on
the entire course.
TRANSITION AREAS: Bikes must be pushed in the transition areas.
Escorts and spectators are not allowed into transition areas. Items of
personal equipment and refreshments may be handed out to athletes
by escorts up to 200 metres past the transition areas. The start and

The «Overall» ranking list will be compiled separately for women and
men. The category classifications are shown in the rankings. If fewer
than three participants are classified per category, they will be ranked
