see you there...
Nashville may be most famous as Music City,
but with other nicknames such as Athens of the South,
the Buckle of the Bible Belt, Cashville, Nashvegas and
Titan Town this destination presents a whole world
of cultural experiences. After the DHI Conference
and Exposition draws you in, you will experience
what brings visitors back year after year. With a
rich history, culture and old-fashioned Southern
hospitality, this city brings the American Spirit to
life. From Antebellum home tours, to museums, a
zoo, and science museum, Nashville is full of activities for visitors of every age and background.

Founded in 1779 on the
Cumberland River by James
Robertson and a group from
the Watauga Association (an
autonomous government from
1772 to 1777), the city was first
named Fort Nashborough and
quickly grew into one of the most
metropolitan areas in the South.
Its ideal location on the river and
its status as a major railroad hub
contributed to its economic success.
Nashville became the permanent
capital of Tennessee in 1843.
During the Civil War, Tennessee
sided with the Confederacy and
was the last state to secede from
the Union. In February of 1862,
Nashville received the dubious
distinction of becoming the first
state capital to fall to the Union
troops. Though left badly damaged
and in economic shambles,
Nashville rebounded to prosperity in the late 19th century. The
grand buildings that arose out
of this successful boom still line
the streets of the downtown area.

Today, Nashville is the second
most populous city in Tennessee.
Tennessee has been home to
three U.S. Presidents – Andrew
Jackson, James K. Polk and Andrew
Johnson. To see how one of our
past presidents lived, visit the
Hermitage, home to President
Andrew Jackson, the nation’s 7th
president. Join the nearly 15 million
visitors to this historic home since
it opened as a museum in 1889.
Upon arrival, be sure to watch the
video on President Jackson and
the Hermitage and then explore
the exhibits. You can step back in
time when you enter the residence
which is displayed as it looked
in 1837 when Andrew Jackson
returned from his second term as
president. As you tour the house,

will share stories of the family and
give you a peak into the personal
life of one of our forefathers. If
the weather permits, take a horsedrawn wagon ride of the grounds
including the first Hermitage,
Jackson’s tomb, the Cotton Gin and
Press. While viewing the many
exhibits on the property, you will
be entertained with stories of life
on this 1,000 acre cotton plantation
when President Jackson called it
home. Can you see the driveway’s
resemblance to a guitar?
Nashville has also been home
to many famous Americans. Such
notable people as civil rights
activist Julian Bond, former US
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist,
pin-up model Bettie Page, and
actress Annie Potts were all born
in Nashville. Other famous resi-
dents have included musicians
Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Alan
Jackson, Willie Nelson, Shania
Twain and Hank Williams. US Vice
President Al Gore, actresses Reese
Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman
and talk show host Oprah Winfrey
have also called Nashville “home.”
If given the opportunity, all
Nashvillians would surely share
a long list of sightseeing, dining
and nightlife options with visitors.
From the art and history of the Frist
Center, Centennial Park and the
Parthenon to the parade of country
music highlights, there is something
for everyone in this thriving city.
Few would dispute the fact
that Nashville became known as
Music City USA with the advent
of the Grand Ole Opry in 1925.
Not only is country western big
here, but Americana, jazz, blues,
rockabilly, gospel and rock ‘n’ roll
can all be traced back to Nashville.
Nowhere is this more evident
than the Historic RCA Studio B
where Elvis Presley recorded over
200 songs. For those interested in
the music scene, city highlights
include the Country Music Hall
of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium,
and the Musicians Hall of Fame.
Culture and history buffs could
fill several days visiting the
battlefields and local museums.
Bicentennial Capitol Mall State
Park may be the best place to get
started with its 200 foot granite
map of the state which illustrates
the state’s history. The Tennessee
State Museum is home to exhibits
which walk visitors from the time
of the prehistoric Indians through

the Civil War to the early 1900s.
Numerous Civil War sites can also
be visited in and around Nashville
including the Battle of Nashville,
Battle of Stones River and Battle of
Franklin (where visitors can tour
the Carter House and Carnton
Plantation). Another must-see attraction is the Parthenon, the only full
scale reproduction of the famous
Greek monument. The Parthenon
is home to the city’s art museum
and the tallest indoor sculpture
in the Western world, the Athena
Parthenos which stands 42 feet tall.
Certainly, after a full day of
sight-seeing, you will be ready for
a great meal and some nightlife,
and Nashville has an abundance of
both! From familiar entertainment
restaurants such as the Hard Rock
Café, Planet Hollywood and the
NASCAR Café to one-of-a-kind
Nashville cornerstones like the
Wildhorse Saloon and the General
Jackson Showboat, visitors will
have a delicious meal and unique
dining experience. In the evenings
you won’t be at a loss for what to
do with your free time. For starters there aren’t many places in the
States where you can walk into a bar
and see celebrities, many of whom
will hop on the stage to perform for
their loyal fans. Perhaps one of the
most entertaining ways to spend an
evening would be in the company of
singer-songwriters. These behindthe-scenes stars bring so many of
your favorite hits to life and can be
found at many of the area bars and
honky-tonks. With shows, tours,
restaurants and specialty shops all
at your fingertips, your free time
will be spent experiencing every
inch of this charming southern city.
