Smart meters will offer new payment options and phone app updates.
Metro Public Works will be
retrofitting parking meters
and pay stations throughout
the county with solar powered
smart credit enabled technology. The project, beginning on
Deaderick Street with Digital
Pay Stations will be completed
in phases until all city man-
aged parking meters throughout the county have the updated technology.
“No coins, no cash, no problem – the new meters will
accept credit and debit cards,”
Chief Traffic Engineer Chip
Knauf said. “We are excited to
roll out this program which is

Uber wants to notify
users about upcoming
healthcare check-ups
Uber will offer discounted fares for doctor visits.
Uber and Nashville-based
healthcare communication
company
Relatient
announced new technical integrations aimed at increasing
access to health care by overcoming the barrier that annually prevents approximately
3.6 million Americans from
receiving health care: lack of
transportation.
Through this partnership,
the Uber app will be fully integrated into text and email
messages to patients delivered by Relatient. Such messages include appoint - ment
reminders, follow up care
coordination, patient balance
information and preventative
care prompts – such as
reminding a patient with a
heart condition to schedule
an EKG.
Plus, while riding to their
appointment in an Uber,
patients will receive a message to check in with their
provider, so that all necessary
paperwork is complete when
they arrive. And they will
receive a link to a patient satisfaction survey to complete
on their ride home.
In honor of the integration, Relatient and Uber will
offer a “Ride To Health™
Week,” which will be the
week of August 22-26. During
this time, anyone in the US
who requests an Uber
through Relatient to get to or
from a health appointment
with a participating provider
will receive a discount on
their ride. More details about
this special offer can be found
online at ridetohealth.org.
“Patients who miss medical appointments or have to
reschedule at the last minute
frequently cite transportation
as a factor. We’re very excited
about the collaboration with
Relatient because it gives people a simple way to
plan
their appointments and
ensure they always have
access to a reliable ride when
they need one,” said Rob
Daniels, Product Partnerships Lead for Uber.
Relatient’s
CEO,
Sam
Johnson, noted that the integration with Uber could significantly decrease the high
cost of missed appointments,
as well as removing the negative impact that a missed
appointment has on an individual’s health outcomes.
“Missed appointments lead
to risks that could be averted.
According to the National
Commission on Prevention
Priorities, 100,000 people die
each year because of lack of
access to preventative care
services, like screenings for
hypertension, cholesterol and
certain cancers. There’s no
doubt that solving the transportation problem will save
lives. It will also mean more
financially sound health organizations. For example, it’s
not unusual for a doctor to
average four missed appointments per day, about $150,000
in lost revenue per doctor
every year. For large medical
practices, this quickly adds
up to millions of dollars.”

including the State Museum.
Knestrick, the retired founder
of Walter Knestrick Contractor,
Inc. and a longtime friend of the
State Museum, was a boyhood
classmate of Grooms. He began
collecting Grooms’ prints in the
1970s and has helped organize
traveling exhibitions of the
works since the 1980s.
In 2001, Knestrick's collection comprised a State Museum
traveling exhibition in conjunction with the publication of a
catalog raisonné of Grooms’
graphic work entitled, Red
Grooms: The Graphic Work,
which Knestrick authored. The
show, which opened at the
National Academy Museum in
New York and then traveled to
the Chicago Cultural Center,
was also presented at 10 other
American
museums.
The
Knestricks' donation includes
the artwork that was featured
in the traveling exhibition and
catalog.
Grooms is an American multimedia artist best known for
his colorful pop-art constructions depicting frenetic scenes
of modern urban life. Many
contemporary art historians
consider Grooms to be one of
Tennessee's most accomplished
artists. In addition to painting
and sculpture, Grooms is also
known for his prolific printmaking. He has experimented
with numerous techniques, creating woodblock prints, spraypainted stencils, soft-ground
etchings and elaborate threedimensional lithograph constructions.
Grooms, born in Nashville
in 1937 and raised in Tennessee,
began his artistic exploration
while attending public schools.
In 1955, while they were both
Hillsboro High School seniors,
Grooms and Knestrick's work
was featured in a two-man show
of 35 paintings at Nashville's
Lyzon Gallery.
In 1958 Grooms moved to
New York City to immerse himself in its art scene while working at such odd jobs as a movie
house usher. The vibrant color
of his hair earned him the
name “Red,” and his art
“Happenings,” unstructured
live performances, began to

earn him a measure of notoriety in the art world.
"The Knestricks’ extraordinarily generous promised gift
of the Grooms’ graphic works
is, undoubtedly, the singularly
most significant collection of
contemporary art ever donated
to the Tennessee State
Museum. It now belongs to the
Volunteer State’s citizens, children, and scholars,” State
Museum Executive Director
Lois Riggins-Ezzell said. “For
decades to come, the Grooms’
collection will be available for
the enrichment, study, contemplation, and laugh-out-loud joy
for everyone to experience.
Red’s work brings his serious,
yet humorous, world perspective into sharp focus for all
to interpret and embrace.
Certainly there is no other
American artist painting today
who chronicles popular culture
with such an incisively whimsical delight."
With
regard
to
the
Knestricks’ gift, Grooms said: "I
so appreciate my dear old
friend Walter Knestrick taking
it upon himself to collect each
and every one of my graphic
works over the years, which
makes the Knestrick Collection
gift to my home state museum
both unique and particularly
special."
Noted New York art appraiser Dr. Alex J. Rosenberg said,
"One usually begins to collect
an artist's work after he or she
has established their reputation, making it very difficult to
succeed in collecting the artist's
entire oeuvre. Either the cost
of obtaining several works or
their lack of availability on the
market prevents reaching one's
goal. However, the Knestricks
are the rare exceptions who
began to collect Red Grooms’
printed art when it was readily
available and affordable and
have continued to do so.
Without their foresight, I doubt
that this unique, valuable and
complete collection of Grooms’
printed work would exist. I
extend my admiration and congratulations to the Knestricks
for their magnificent and irreplaceable promised gift to the
people of Tennessee."
There are plans for Grooms’
graphic work to be on exhibit in
one of the art galleries in the
new State Museum, scheduled
to open in 2018.

25 quotes that will help
you live a more artful life
Sheldon Kopp was a psychotherapist and author, based
in Washington, D.C. He was
born in New York City and
received his Ph.D there from
the New School for Social
Research. Although he had an
active private practice, he also
served
as
Psychotherapy
Supervisor for the Pastoral
Counselling and Consultation
Centers in Washington.
A psychologist who wrote
about self-esteem, he is famous
for the many wise, pithy
quotes and proverbs about the
art of living he made through
the years. Among his best are
the following.
****
1. “You can’t make anyone
love you. You just have to
reveal who you are and take
your chances.
2. “Everything good is costly, and the development of the
personality is one of the most
costly of all things. It will cost
you your innocence, your illusions, your certainty.
3. “There appear to be many
people who chose to go crazy
(or become alcoholics, addicts,
criminals, suicides) rather
than have to bear the pain and
ambiguity of a life situation
that they have decided that
they cannot stand.
4. “All of the truly important battles are waged within
the self.
5. “In the long run we get no
more than we have been willing to risk giving.
6. “For each of us, the only
hope resides in his own efforts,
in completing his own story,
not in the other’s interpretation.
7. “We must always see our
own feelings of uneasiness as
being our chance for making
the growth choice rather than
the fear choice.
8. “Often things are as bad
as they seem. Even so, some of
the time it’s possible to enjoy
life as it is. But the better anything gets, the more you’ll
miss it when it’s gone.
9. “If you stubbornly refuse
to mourn your losses, you get
depressed.
10. “At last you cry out in
anguish: ‘Why me?’ God
answers: ‘Why not?’
11. “You can so stand it.
After all, it’s only pain. What
makes it seem unbearable is
your mistaken belief that it
can be cured.
12. “Everything is difficult
at first. I have never begun
any important venture for
which I felt adequately prepared.
13. “Without knowing for
sure what’s right or wrong,
take your best shot. There’s
just no way to get it all
straight.
Mistakes are
inevitable.
14. “Control is an illusion.
You wait for everything to be
alright, knowing all the while
that the next problem is
already in the mail.
15. “Escape is not a dirty
word. None of us can face
what’s happening head-on all
of the time. It’s alright to pretend sometimes. The only danger lies in pretending that you
are not pretending.
16. “Remember, we are all in
this alone. It helps to know
that everyone is in the same
situation. It helps, but not a
whole lot.
17. “We insist that our situation is special. It’s so hard to
accept how ordinary we all
are.
18. “We must learn to love
in the absence of illusions.
19. “We must try to live a
just life in an unjust world.
20. “We must be willing to
go on caring when we are helpless to change things.”
21. “Our best may not turn
out to be good enough. Still, it
will have to do.
22. “I’m not O.K. You’re not
O.K. And that’s O.K.”
Mayor Barry to foster community dialogue on racial justice
Mayor Megan Barry announced a series of upcoming
events designed to facilitate a
constructive dialogue with the
Nashville community about
race relations and criminal justice.
“The heart wrenching
tragedies in Dallas, Baton Rouge,
and Falcon Heights were
painful to experience, as a
Mayor, as a mother, as an
American,” said Mayor Barry.
“But they have served to sharpen our focus and bring sometimes uncomfortable issues to
the forefront of our national
conversation.”
Mayor Barry, in partnership
with Lipscomb University’s
Institute of Conflict Management, will host two dialogues
with the community to discuss
issues of criminal justice in the
African American community,
as well as broader topics around
race and social justice.
The two events are July 23
at Pearl Cohn Comprehensive
High School, from 1 - 4 pm,
and a subsequent event on
September 10 at the Music City
Center, Exhibit Hall A from 1 - 4
p.m. that will be open to the
entire public.
The Mayor’s Office will
recruit and train 15 individuals
to serve as small group conversation facilitators for breakout
groups of 10 attendees each.
Structured dialogue sessions
will include prepared questions
and communications standards.
“These meetings will not be
a starting line or a finish line
in our goal of racial and social
justice in our city and in our
society. This is, unfortunately,
a long race for our country to
run, and frankly, it’s hard
to see the finish line,” said
Mayor Barry. “But we can’t
stop running this race. We can
always be moving ahead, one
yard, one foot, one inch at a
time, as we seek the goal of a
more just and equitable society for all.”
In addition to outlining the
upcoming community dialogues, Mayor Barry discussed
some of the ways in which
the Metro Nashville Police
Depart- ment has begun implementing reforms to police officer training.

her beloved McGuire
Linda Bernice Booth, 67,
fulfilled this life with grace
and elegance on July 11, 2016,
in Nashville, TN, after a courageous battle with lymphoma.
Booth was born on April 9,
1949, in Memphis, to Alton A.
Booth and his wife, Bernice
Kirk Booth. She is predeceased by both parents and
brother, Wayne Booth.
A graduate of Elizabeth
Messick High School, Memphis,
Booth also completed course
studies at Lambuth University, the University of Tennessee, and Belmont College.
Reared in Memphis, Booth
spent hours volunteering at the
local USO with life-long friend,
Linda Johns Evans. She
embraced an opportunity to
live in Rota, Spain, prior to settling in Nashville, where, at age
23 she became a realtor with
Nixon-Kent Realtors. Ina NixonKent, served as Booth’s mentor and surrogate Mother,
until her passing, and encouraged her to obtain her broker’s
license at age 25 and establish
L.B. Booth Realtors in 1979.
As Owner/Broker, ABR
(Accredited Buyer Representative) & GRI (Graduate Real

a will, there is a way, remained
her mantra until the end.
Booth touched many lives
with her engaging smile, generosity, and trademark sense of

Parking...
There are approximately
2,000 meters throughout the
county – about one half of
these are in the downtown
footprint. The new meters,
manufactured by IPS Group,

transactions and will accept
American Express, Visa,

Customers using credit cards
as opposed to cash will pay a

which
equates to about two cents for
every dollar spent. The 2.3 percent fee is charged by the electronic processing company.
Maximum time to park on

uncovering meters, and vehicle usage cost. The rate adjustments were proposed to, and
approved by the Traffic and

this month. The new rates will
go into effect as meters are
being changed over to the new

*Meter price increase from

is not necessary to proclaim a
particular life mantra?
Every life matters! All people have the rights. What you
want to say is important, at
least to you. I have been the victim of unkind statements and
dissenting positions as I write
for this newspaper. My request
is that if you wish to make a
statement, whether positive or
negative, please have the
courage to sign your name and
provide an address (e-mail or
other) so I may have the opportunity to defend my position or
thank you for your opinion.
Only cowards hide behind
anonymity.
Accountability is not simply
taking the blame when something goes wrong. It’s not a confession. Accountability is
about delivering on a commitment. It’s responsibility to an
outcome, not just a set of tasks.
It’s taking initiative with
thoughtful, strategic followthrough. In my opinion, we
have not seen much of this
within the past 8 years.
And accountability is necessary at all levels of the hierarchy. Executives high on the
organization chart can’t really
be accountable unless the people who report to them also follow through on their commitments. That creates a struggle,
of course. I have seen leaders
direct, question, and plead. I
have seen them yell, act passive-aggressively, and throw up
their hands in frustration — all
in the service of “holding people accountable.” But, none of
that works. Getting angry with
people when they fall short is
not a productive process for
holding people accountable. It
almost always reduces motivation and performance.
So what can we do to foster
accountability in the people
around us? We need to aim for
clarity in five areas:
1. Clear expectations. The
first step is to be crystal clear
about what you expect. This
means being clear about the
outcome you’re looking for,
how you’ll measure success, or
failure, and how people should
go about achieving the objective. It doesn’t all have to come
from you. In fact, the more
skilled your people are, the
more ideas and strategies
should be coming from them.
After the discussion, list the
main points discussed and
agree that each of you understand what was said and agreed
upon.
2. Clear capability. What
skills does the person need to
meet the expectations? What
resources will they need? If the
person does not have what’s
necessary, can they acquire
what’s missing? If so, what’s
the plan? If not, you’ll need to
delegate to someone else.
Otherwise you’re setting them
up for failure.
3.
Clear
measurement.
Nothing frustrates leaders
more than being surprised by
failure. Sometimes this surprise is because the person who
should be delivering is afraid to
ask for help. Sometimes it
comes from premature optimism on both sides. Either way,
it’s
completely
avoidable.
During the expectations conversation, you should agree on
weekly milestones with clear,
measurable, objective targets.
If any of these targets slip,
jump on it immediately. Brainstorm a solution, identify a fix,
redesign the schedule, or
respond in some other way that
gets the person back on track.
4. Clear feedback. Honest,
open, ongoing feedback is critical. People should know where
they stand. If you have clear
expectations, capability, and
measurement, the feedback can
be fact-based and easy to deliver. Is the person delivering on
her commitments? Is she working well with the other stakeholders? If she needs to increase her capability, is she on
track? The feedback can also go
both ways — is there something you can be doing to be
more helpful? Give timely feedback, and remember it’s more
important to be helpful than
nice.
5. Clear consequences. If
you’ve been clear in all of the
above ways, you can be reasonably sure that you did what’s
necessary to support their performance. At this point, you
have three choices: repeat,
reward, or release. Repeat the
steps above if you feel that
there is still a lack of clarity in
the system. If the person succeeded, you should reward
them appropriately (acknowledgement, promotion, etc.). If
they have not proven accountable and you are reasonably
certain that you followed the
steps above, then they are not a
good fit for the role, and you
should release them from it
(change roles, fire them, etc.).
These are the building
blocks for a culture of accountability. The magic is in the way
they work together as a system.
If you miss any one of them,
accountability will fall through
that gap. Remember to be
empathetic—try to see the
other side of the discussion.
How can you assist people to
be accountable? The answer is:
It depends. Try the 5 points
offered above.

Celebrations and sharing insight
Last Supper: What is the
most reproduced work of art in
the world? Arguably, that is
Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last
Supper” showing the historical
event documented in all four
Biblical gospels: Matthew,
Mark, Luke and John. Com-
pleted between 1494 and 1498,
“The Last Supper” has certainly been admired, mistreated,
nearly destroyed, restored, misunderstood and reproduced
more than any other religious
painting in history. Kem Hinton,
Tuck-Hinton Architects, became

deeply interested in “The Last
Supper,” at Santa Maria delle
Grazie in Milan, Italy. Hinton
has researched the history of
the painting, recently sharing
what he learned in a lively talk,
illustrated with slides, at Green
Hills Rotary. He debunked the
widely discussed myths about
the painting from Dan Brown’s
fictional thriller “The Da Vinci
Code.” Hinton also recounted
the incredible story of how the
famous artwork survived during World War II. When most of
Santa Maria delle Grazie was
bombed, Only one wall ---- the
one with The Last Supper
mural – remained standing.

Speaker Harwell: Beth
Harwell spends most of her
time gaveling in the Tennessee
House of
Representatives
where she is Madam Speaker.
There was a “once upon a time”
however, when Harwell, like
other moms, often brought her
young kids, Allie and Sam, to
the Green Hills Library for
story time. In a Story Room
reprise this week, Harwell
appeared as guest reader of
“How to Dress a Dragon” for
about thirty youngsters. “If
you have to dress a dragon,”
she read, “you have to catch
him as he flies, then tickle and
tackle him to the floor."
Harwell appeared on behalf of
Tennesseans for Student Success – which annually launches
this reading program to keep
kids reading in the summer
while school is out.

invited a crowd of friends to
The Temple Congregation
Ohabai Sholom to celebrate.
Many who came are members
of the Downtown Kiwanis Club

senior member, having served
close to 70 years. Eisenstein
has been described by those
who know him as a true 'mensch,' yiddish for a person of
integrity and honor who places
the needs of others above his
own. At his 99th birthday a
year ago, Eisenstein said, "I

Real estate group joins the Belle Meade increases property tax
Green Hills housing scene $.08 to compensate for lost revenue
The Wilson Group Real Estate
Services will open a new office
in Green Hills in late summer,
according to company CEO and
President Christie Wilson,
located at 4100 Hillsboro Circle.
“Green Hills is a key location for real estate in the
Nashville and Middle Tennessee region,” Wilson said.
“While we have been active in
that area for many years, having a strong, visible presence
there will help make The
Wilson Group Real Estate
Services an even more accessible choice to serve our clients,
customers and agents”.
The new office is approximately 3,000 square feet and is
located where it is part of a
very walkable part of the
Green Hills area, according to
Wilson.
“Green Hills is an increasingly walkable community.
With the Hill Center retail,
more housing options and the
ongoing growth there, it will be
a great location for our new
office,” she said. “We have
already begun successfully
attracting experienced real
estate professionals to be part
of our team there. It is exciting
to see this long-term goal of
our company be accomplished.
We look forward to the success
we will have there, along with
the ongoing success for which
our Sylvan Park office is
known.”
The Wilson Group Real
Estate Services is a “boutique”
real estate brokerage, specializing in residential and investment real estate, along with
property management.

By now, all Belle Meade residents are aware of the repeal of
the Tennessee Income tax, better known as the Hall Income
Tax. With its gradual reduction
of 16.667 percent per year over
the next six years, beginning in
2016, the Hall tax will be totally
eliminated by 2022.
According the Belle Meade’s
July Newsletter, three public
meetings were held in June to
discuss the challenges faced by
the City in this State decision.
Belle Meade receives over 50
percent of its annual revenue
from the Hall tax, therefore,
action is necessary. The Commissioners, by a 3-2 vote, agreed
to a current year increase in
the Belle Meade property tax
from .2243 per $100 of assessed
value to .30 per $100, to reflect
the anticipated revenue loss
projected for fiscal year 20162017. Each year, the projected
loss of revenue from the Hall
tax will be compared to the
need for additional property
tax increases.
Action, as budgets are presented and approved, will be
taken to offset needed deficiencies. It is expected that eventu-
ally the entire loss of revenue
will be replaced by Belle Meade
property tax increases, although not necessarily in dollar amounts to mirror the
decrease in Hall tax, but in
amounts needed to assure fiscal responsibility.
The Commission welcomes
comments or suggestions
precipitated by this decision
via email to [email protected].
The entire public meeting
presentation is available on the
Belle Meade website.

Donelson Chapter helps national
group break Guinness world record
To celebrate the National
Society’s 125th Anniversary
and the culmination of the
Celebrate America! Volunteer
service initiative, the DAR
channeled its fervor for patriotism and dedicated support of
the nation’s military service
members toward an ambitious
goal. During the week of the
125th Continental Congress,
held in June at DAR’s Washington, D.C., headquarters, the
organization set an official
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS
title in patriotism for “most
letters to military personnel
collected in one month.”
Achieving this ambitious
goal required the National
Society to collect and then
mail at least 10,000 letters to
active-duty service members.
Daughters across the country
rallied in support of the effort.
Members of the Rachel Stockley
Donelson Chapter in Nashville, although a small chapter,
contributed by collecting about
a dozen letters to add to the
total. A member could only
write one letter to one military
person.
As dictated by the GUIN-
NESS WORLD RECORDS guidelines, all letters had to be
handwritten, addressed to an
active duty service member,
placed inside a stamped,
unsealed envelope, and delivered in person to one of the
designated stations set up at
DAR Headquarters. Tennessee
Society DAR members brought
the chapter’s letters to Washington, D.C., and hand-delivered them to a collection station. Letters of appreciation
filled more and more boxes as
the week progressed, and an
official GUINNESS WORLD
RECORDS adjudicator arrived
to conduct the verification
process.
The carefully tallied total
was revealed at the National
Defense Night ceremony on
Saturday, June 18, 2016. Each
letter represents the support
of a grateful nation, and the
Rachel Stockley Donelson
Chapter is humbled by the
opportunity to assist in collecting these missives to the
defenders of our country.
By the end of June, all
100,904 letters will be on the
way to active-duty military

Community meets
new McGavock
Elementary leader
On Wednesday, July 20, community members met with the
new principal at McGavock
Elementary, Jason Taylor.
Taylor takes over for the exiting Lance Forman, who has
begun work at the new Smith
Springs Elementary School.
Taylor was most recently an
assistant principal at Dodson
Elementary just a few miles
from McGavock. He has spent
his entire teaching career serving Metro elementary schools
in Hermitage, Donelson and
Old Hickory, with nine years
teaching at Andrew Jackson
followed by assistant principal
jobs at Ruby Major and
Dodson.
“Jason is not only a tremendous educator,” said Chief
Academic Officer Jay Steele..
“He is also deeply ingrained in
this community and the perfect choice to lead McGavock
Elementary. He knows these
families and their needs, and
he will lead McGavock with a
steady hand. He puts a strong
focus on collaboration and
community engagement, both
of which will serve his students very well.”
Tutors needed in Donelson
for the upcoming school year
Katherine Pleas has spent
her entire life helping people
learn to read and write.
From the time she was
asked to lead her reading
group in elementary school,
through her 27 years of teaching English at McGavock High
School, now to her retirement
years where she helps at-risk
students who attend Charlotte
Park Elementary and FallHamilton Elementary schools
learn to read and write, Pleas
has enjoyed the process of
teaching. As a volunteer with
the FiftyForward Friends
Learning in Pairs (FLIP) program, Pleas has found her purpose.
As a FLIP tutor, Pleas works
with four students for 30 minutes each week on literacy
skills, "they call me Ms. P," she
said. "I am so glad to be a part
of this – my passion is to help
students."
"Kathy plays a key role in
motivating the students she
tutors. She gives them positive
feedback to help build their
confidence," FiftyForward FLIP
director Sandra Thomas, said..
"Pleas shared with me the
story of one FLIP student who
was reading on the kindergarten level and when he came
to their session asking for
chocolate. 'I said, let's get busy
and do our work and we'll talk
about chocolate later,' she said.
'We got busy and he forgot all
about the chocolate.'"
Pleas's work with FLIP
comes after many years of her
own education and an extensive career teaching in paid
and volunteer positions. A
graduate of the University
of Tennessee Nashville with
a degree in English, Pleas
earned a master's degree from
Tennessee State University in
adult education and has completed postgraduate work at
Middle Tennessee State University, Florida State and
Trevecca University. In addition, she was one of 15 people
nationwide selected by the
National Endowment for the
Humanities for a study of the
transcendentalists at Oregon
State University. She was also
awarded an HCA grant that
allowed her to study authors of
the 19th century at Oxford
University in England; at the
end of those studies, Pleas
was given the "Queen's Cup"
Outstanding Student Award.
During her years as at
McGavock High School, Pleas
not only taught English, but
was also a test proctor for the
ACT exam for 10 years, was the
Beta Club Sponsor and the
girl's track coach for five years.
In addition, she taught parttime as an adult education
teacher at the Madison Comprehensive High School.
In addition to FLIP, she
currently volunteers with
Trevecca Health and Rehab,
Gentiva Hospice, and Nashville
Opportunities Industrialization Center. A FLIP tutor for
four years, Pleas says the program holds a special place in
her life. "FLIP is an outstanding program. There are a lot of
students who need help and
FLIP has reached out."
Friends Learning in Pairs
(FLIP) is part of the Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP) of FiftyForward. The
program places tutors 55 and
older in elementary schools
in Davidson and Williamson
counties to work with at-risk
students. Tutors work specifically with students on reading
and math.
During the 2015-2016 school
year, 125 RSVP volunteers
55 years and older served as
FLIP tutors in Davidson and
Williamson counties providing
individualized instruction to
nearly 500 at-risk students in
grades K-4. According to Pleas,
volunteers are currently needed to tutor at elementary
schools in the Bordeaux,
Bellevue, East, North and
West Nashville, Hermitage,
Donelson, and Madison areas.
FLIP tutors are well-trained,
placed in schools near their
homes and provided materials
and training from the teachers
and the FiftyForward FLIP
staff. Tutoring is done during
the school day and runs from
fall through spring.
Pleas says, "Working with
FLIP is a wonderful experience. I love working with the
students. I don't know what it
is, but I can draw them in. It's a
gift and a passion."
For more information about
FLIP and upcoming training
classes contact Sandra Thomas

lum home of Colonel Granville
Sevier.
We kids had no idea of the
great history surrounding that
old mansion located near the
corner of Granny White Pike
and Kirkwood Lane in what is
now Sevier Park.
This mansion in Sevier Park
now houses the Metropolitan
Historical Commission and is
open to the public. The inside of
Sunnyside Mansion now has the
old blended with the new. The
old home was refitted with insulated walls and central heat and
air-conditioning systems.
The original wood flooring is
still there as well as an old,
ornate mantel that was found in
pieces that the workmen put back
together.
Sunnyside Mansion was built
in the early 1850s and was
the home of Mary Childress
Benton. Mary Benton was a
widow of Jesse Benton and the
first cousin of Sarah Childress
Polk, wife of President James K.
Polk. Also, Mary Benton was
the sister-in-law of statesman
and artist Thomas Hart Benton.
Jesse Benton, Mary's husband,
left Nashville after a feud with
Andrew Jackson. Jesse Benton
died in 1843.
Prior to the Civil War, Mary
brought her widowed niece,
Minerva Douglass, and her
niece's two children, Henry and
Mary, to live in her home. Young
Mary Douglass gave Sunnyside
Sunnyside Mansion
its name because of its bright,
open hillside location. Mary
Douglass later married Theodore
Francis Sevier of Kentucky,
and the young couple lived at
Sunnyside until the Civil War
broke out.
The Battle of Nashville raged
around the old home, and it still
bears some scars left by mine
balls on the porch, door, and
columns. Wounded Union soldiers were treated there in the
days following the battle.
In 1882, Dr. L. G. Noel purchased the estate. Dr. Noel was a
prominent Nashville dentist and
taught dentistry classes at
Vanderbilt University.
After Dr. Noel's death, Colonel
Granville Sevier, son of Theodore
Francis and Mary Douglass
-photos by Anthony Cunningham
Sevier, made a visit back to
Sunnyside and the brought his
mother back to where she had
grown up. In 1927, the Colonel
purchased and restored the home

Brown's Creek back when the

was living there.

What happened to my rebate?
I’m ticked off about the manufacturers $1500 rebate for Kia
cars. I bought a new Kia Optima
from a Kia dealer and we agreed
on the price and then I was told
the car had a $1500 rebate. I was
thrilled I was going to get another $1500 off my car but I was mad
when the dealer added the rebate
to my original sales price and
then he took it off so I was back
at my original sales price.
I did check with a Kia support
tech and was told all Kia dealers
are individually owned and they
only bought the Kia cars from
the manufacturer. They do not
have a manufacturers service
representative. Beware of the
manufacturers rebate and do not
sign a retail incentive claim
form which gives the dealer the
rebate.
Be careful when dealing with
car dealers!

Donelson Kroger, I have noticed
that trash is an issue at other
Krogers as well. One night, at the
Nipper's Corner Kroger, I notified an employee of the overflowing trash containers. I was told
that it wasn't the employees'
responsibility to empty the trash.
Wow! No one seemed concerned
about it, not even the manager on
duty. Carts always seem to accumulate in the parking lot corrals,
often interfering with safe driving. Publix definitely is on the
ball when it comes to these and
other customer service issues.

Handicap parking is for
the handicap
The thing that ticks me off
the most is the police officers
never patrol the area where the
handicap people park in any of
the grocery stores. I see young
people parking their sport cars
and you know they are not handicap but I’ve never seen anyone
in the two years I’ve lived here
get a ticket for parking there
when they are not supposed too.
Price gouging
While driving to church Sunday morning I noticed a brand of
gasoline for $2.29 a gallon. The
same brand not far away was
priced at $2.05 and T.V. this
morning reported, beware of
price gouging. If the police can
send a young person to make a
purchase of (beer, cigarettes)
with no ID and these items are
sold to them, that is breaking the
law. So is price gouging. That
itself speaks wrong is wrong.

They need to get the mowers

you know that ticked me off.
Share the blame
Obama can not be totally
blamed for the stupid mistakes
he has made, his advisors
should be blamed too. Obama
Care is a laugh; take a look at
Obama Care that alone will set
you free. If it was not for the
business people, who make the
big money to pay the bills,
where would we be? Ask yourself why have so many companies gone out of business. Let
me tell you! It’s the Obama Care
insurance; we business people
must pay for it. I was not going
to support Trump with my vote,
but look at the problems we
have in this country now. Yes,
I’ll vote for Donald Trump for
president, instead of a trader as
Hillary Clinton. The people in
the White House said that Bill
Clinton tried to steal the china
dishes when he moved out, if
that be true, what does she plan
to steal from the good citizens
(black and white). You are correct, this ticks me off.
14th amendment
The 14th amendment to the
United States Constitution forbids the taking of a person’s
life without due process of law.
Abortion therefore is neither
safe for the baby nor the mother. Overturn Roe vs. Wade.
Illegal searches
Ticked off, you bet. There’s
an investigation special that
uncovers how police illegally
search peoples homes without a
search warrant on a local news
channel. One of the commentators who retired as a district
attorney general of Sumner
county is now a lawyer for hire.
In 1980 he took my case to
the Tennessee Supreme Court
claiming the police had the
right to legally search and
cease my car without a search
warrant. After three years and
losing my car the Supreme
Court upheld the Criminal
Court of Appeals decision and
ruled the search was in fact illegal. In 1983 the law in Tennessee was changed to the
present law that it is today.
No thanks to the attorney.
So there’s truth of the matter, police still do what they
want to do and lawyers for the
state do too. Now, I respect good
police officers who put their
lives on the line everyday for
the good of the people. You can
not say that however about
lawyers. Its all about the money
and fame for themselves.
Train your employees
Regarding Krogers and the
parking lot, it’s so true. Also
Food Lion employees leave piles
of cigarette butts around the
benches, management needs to
take responsibility for that.
Otherwise Publix is going to get
all the money and they should
because they got it right.
Krogers, Food Lion, wake up
and train your employees correctly.
door. Staff has nothing to do
with the residents, you’re on
your own.
What little you know, I’ve
spent my life helping people.
that’s why I come here, to help
the ones who can’t help themselves. Check and know the
facts before you make your
comment.
This is an independent living place.
Clamping down
All lives matter
I’m ticked off because we’ve
been seeing this coming for
quite some time now. The thing
is we all matter, not just black
lives but we all matter. Every
life matters, what have we
become. What is the matter,
what’s done is done.
Yeah, life changes and is
always rearranging but we do
not give up and we do not backdown. All these words that we
are spewing, what are we
doing?
Uncaring person?
I’m ticked off with the person who called and wrote in
about the uncaring person concerning blocking the path. It’s
not about uncaring, it’s about
safety and respect. This is not a
nursing home or an assisted living. This is an apartment home
for retired people. Did you
think about the people, the
paramedics and family members who are trying to get in
and out and these people are
blocking the path of the front
It amazes me that everyone
is so astonished that Donald
Trump is the nominee for the
Republican party and he is
doing so darn well. I’ve am surprised myself because I consider myself a yellow dog democratic, I’m 68 years old and I’ve
voted in every election and
never voted for a Republican,
but I’m going to be voting for
Trump. And you know why,
because he says what the people
are thinking and feeling.
Especially where it concerns
Muslims, there needs to be
some kind of control at keeping
them out of the country, or at
least checking them out so thoroughly before they are allowed
in that they will do no harm in
this country. Even if they check
out I do not trust them. I’m
afraid of them and I think most
of Americans are afraid of
them.
If Donald Trump accomplishes that much of clamping
down on that particular group
that would be enough for me in
four years. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way.
Bridge Anyone?
No respect for church
I am disgusted to see girls
and sometimes their mothers
wearing matching gym shorts. I
know we experience hot temperatures during summer but I
feel church is not the place to
wear gym or Daisy Duke
shorts. It is disrespectful! I am
not saying that we must wear
dresses and high heels, I am
very casual myself but gym
shorts and Daisy Dukes do not
belong in church. Mothers you
should be role model to your
children, teach them that
church is a place of worship
and we must exhibit some decorum and not so much skin.
Have respect for the place of
worship.

T.W. Frierson
As Joe Street, president of the
Senior Living Division at T.W.
Frierson Contractor Inc. in
Nashville, hangs up his hard hat
on June 30, 2016, to step into
retirement.
Street's leadership has been key to
the growth and
stability of T.W.
Frierson Contractor
Inc. since he joined
the firm in January
1997 as a senior projStreet
ect manager. In three
years, he was promoted to vice
president and chief operating officer, then became president in
2004. After 10 years in that position as part of the company's longterm succession plan, he transitioned to president of the Senior
Living Division in 2014.
Construction has been a way of
life for Street. He grew up in and
around his father’s construction
business. After graduating from
Iowa State University in August
1970 with a degree in construction
technology, Street entered the
workforce. He began his career
working as a field engineer, superintendent and project manager
before progressing to his leadership positions.
Street shares these nuggets of
leadership wisdom, "I was always
of the opinion that great leaders
are great simplifiers. With that in
mind, my job became quite simple
in my mind. I only had to do two
things – take really good care of
our customers, and take really
good care of our employees. If I
did that, everything else seemed
to fall in place."

The Hillsboro High School class of 1971 held its 45th reunion at
the home of Lee Maxcy, where everyone gathered around the pool
and backyard, which are landscaped with gorgeous hydrangeas and
summer flowers.
The classmates mixed and mingled on the screened porch while a
power point presentation displayed photos from the annuals from the
years they were in school, as well as from previous reunions.
Decorations included yellow and green balloons and tables were
decorated with colorful burros. Yellow notepads with a burro on
each were given as favors.
After a group picture was taken, dinner was served, offering barbecue, baked beans, chicken fingers, potato salad and a variety of
desserts. A specialty drink called Island Girl was made to honor
Elizabeth Aulsbrook, who flew in from Hawaii.
Reunion committee members were: Russanne Buchi-Fotre, Allen
McDonald, Mae Ambrose, Lee Maxcy, Gail Biener Wales, and Bo
Richardson.
Guests included: Alan Devine, Wade Punch, Meriam Schremmer,
Joe Keith, Ron Rosson, Susan Rutherford, Paul Robertson, Libby
Perryman, Margaret Stern, Tom Nichol, Julia Rich, Jan Connell,
Lynne Batson, Cheryl Palmer, and Lee Estep.
Reunion: Rick Elliott and

Ft. Nashborough DAR Anniversary Tea
Hillwood Country Club was
the setting for the 85th
Anniversary Tea for the Fort
Nashborough
Chapter
of
National Society Daughters of
the
American
Revolution
(NSDAR).
The
Fort
Nashborough
Chapter was created on April
18, 1931 by organizing Regent
Anita Williams with 35 charter
members.
Today the chapter, one of the
largest in Tennessee, has 159
members. Over the years Fort
Nashborough members have
provided both state and national leadership, including past
NSDAR Honorary President
General Linda Tinker Watkins
and current NSDAR Vice

The theme of the tea focused
on honoring the past whilebuilding the future. Many members dressed in period attire
ranging from Native American
and 1700s colonial “bustle”
dresses to 1800s “hoop” dresses
and 1940s styles.
Two members dressed as special DAR Daughters – Marilyn
Burchett,

as Mary Desha who was one of
the original founders of NSDAR
and Merry Anne Pierson, First
Vice Regent, dressed as Anita
Williams,

of
the
Fort
Nashborough Chapter.
The
National
Society
Daughters of the American
Revolution was founded in 1890
to promote patriotism, preserve
American history, and support
better education for the nation's
children.
At the tea, everyone enjoyed
a delicious selection of finger
foods including cucumber sandwiches, datenut bread with
cream cheese, poached salmon,
chicken salad, pimento cheese
sandwiches, a fruit tray, cookies, lemon squares, and anniversary cake.
Special guests included
NSDAR Honorary President
General Linda Tinker Watkins,
NSDAR Vice President General
Nancy Garrison Hemmrich,
TSDAR Regent Susan Rogers
Thomas, TSDAR First Vice
Regent Charlotte Reynolds,
TSDAR Organizing Secretary
Jackie Utley, TSDAR Chaplain
