G RADUATES
Dear New Hampshire Adult Education Graduate,
If you have passed the GED Tests and earned a New Hampshire Certificate of High School
Equivalency or if you have completed all required credits and received an Adult High School
Diploma, this booklet, New Hampshire College Information for Adult Education Graduates, is for
you.
Congratulations on earning a high school credential! Your effort has led to an important
accomplishment.
We at the Bureau of Adult Education know that many of you plan to continue your education at the
college level. We also know that most of you have many responsibilities that leave little time to
gather college information. This booklet will give you some basic facts about the programs offered
by two-year and four-year colleges in New Hampshire. The booklet also describes other resources
you can use to find out more about making plans for college and about financial aid. Our goal is
to give you a handy reference that can help you consider college possibilities.
Reading this booklet is a good first step, but it’s only a beginning. After you identify a college
that seems like a good fit for you, please look at the college’s website to get more details. Think
of questions you need to ask. Then plan a visit to the college so you can see the location and talk
with admissions representatives.
Best wishes for much success as you continue your education.
Sincerely,
Art Ellison
Administrator

Important Note
The information in New Hampshire College Information for Adult Education Graduates was
provided by college representatives in spring, 2007. Details may have changed by the time you
read this booklet. There may be new contact people, changes in tuition, even changes in programs. Our intent is to give general information to help you identify the colleges that interest
you. Please check with each individual school for up-to-date information before you make any
decisions. --Debbie Tasker

Matriculated: This word looks scary but simply means that you are accepted into a program
and are working toward a degree, certificate, or diploma.
Pre-requisite: A course that lists a pre-requisite course is stating that you must take another
course prior to this one. For example, at some colleges you cannot take College Composition
2 until you have successfully completed College Composition 1.
Co-requisite: These two classes should be taken at the same time.
Associate’s Degree: This is a two-year College degree. Associate degree programs have at
least 64 credits. This is the degree that NHCTC offers. Many two-year colleges offer the
Associate’s degree.
Bachelor’s Degree: This is a four-year degree earned in College. Bachelor’s degree programs
consist of at least 120 credits. Often students can transfer credits earned in an Associate’s
degree toward a Bachelor’s degree.
Graduate student: Any student working on a degree after receiving a Bachelor’s degree.
Certificate: Certificates are granted to show that you meet certain requirements in a career
field. You may be able to transfer credits earned in a certificate program toward an Associate’s
degree.
Transcript: An official copy of classes taken and/or completed. These are only official if they
are in a sealed (unopened) envelope.
GPA: Grade point average. This is an average of the grades you have received.
Elective: This word is used when you may make a course selection within a range of offered
classes. There are general rules that apply when choosing an elective class.
Semester: A semester is a period of time during which a class meets. For example, you may be
able to register for classes during fall and spring semesters. Check the calendar for the college
you plan to attend.
Pell Grant: A Government based grant that does not need to be paid back!
Stafford Loan: These are Government based loans that do need to be paid back.

New Hampshire Charitable Foundation
The Foundation awards college scholarships and loans. The Foundation’s statement,
below, explains that some of the scholarships go to adult learners.
“While most of our scholarships and loans are awarded to what many of
us think of as ‘traditional’ students entering college, already in college, or
pursuing a graduate degree; the Foundation is continually looking for new
ways to deliver scholarship services to less traditional types of students.
Adults returning to school or exploring training opportunities comprise a
significant (and growing) category of our scholarship and loan awards.”
