Lions Pride
A Publication of Lions Head South Association, Brick NJ
VOLUME 2 NO. 10
OCTOBER 2016
I love flowers. Unfortunately, I can kill any healthy plant
in weeks. I found a wonderful calendar full of pictures of
flowers in The Clubhouse. When I saw this one, my hearlt
felt happy. I hope this bright orange brightens your day.
I used plain colored pencils like your grandkids use. Do i
have talent- no. “You don’t have to be great to create.” It’s
healthy for that mind-body-spirit connection.
The Lions Pride is published monthly, and is
distributed gratis to homes in Lions Head South.

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of
attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than
facts. It is more important than the past, than education,
than money, than circumstances, than failures, than
successes, than what other people think or say or do. It
is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It
will make or break a company...a church...a home. The
remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding
the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot
change the past...we cannot change the fact that people will
act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The
only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and
that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what
happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is
with you...you are in charge of your attitude.”

President’s report:
John Castellano
Summer is over and we are now looking to the fall with
many projects getting ready to be accomplished with board
of trustee approval. It has been a great summer season. All
outdoor activities were in full swing and are winding down.
The pool closed on September 11, and was enjoyed by the
residents and their guests. We were able to operate the pool
even with the leak that was not found early in the season. A
contract to find and fix this problem has been issued with
work starting the 3rd week of September, hopefully by
the time this article is printed it will have been found and
fixed. The next order of business will be examining the pool
for plaster work as it is flaking off the bottom of the pool.
The house painting contract has been extended for
another four years with the same contractor. The increases
in price are minimal and the same for the entire contract
period. One more year remains on the tree trimming
contract which has been a huge success. Outdoor activities
should be soon coming to an end, bocce and horse shoes.
Indoor programs are underway, bowling started at the
beginning of September as did indoor shuffleboard for both
the men and women leagues.
Also starting in September was the new security
company. The shift reports are coming into the office
from the security officers on duty. Some of the items on
the reports are garage doors left open, parked cars to close
to hydrants, cars parked in opposite direction. Windows
left open on cars and blocking side walks. In addition
we have received many complaints for speeding on our
streets. Residents have noticed cars traveling too fast. This
is a dangerous situation and we have notified the police
department and asked them to come into the community
to issue speeding tickets.
The budget process for next year is winding down and
hopefully all committees will have submitted their requests
for consideration. The board of trustees this year are very
mindful of the fact that monies are not being generated as
was done in the past. Many projects were put on the back
burner years ago which are now requiring attention. It is
the boards responsibility to make sure that we spend the
associations funds wisely and protect the community’s
property.
The board is hopeful that the exercise room which
was approved has been started by the time this column is
read. As of September 1, we were number 1 on the towns
building departments list to have the permits issued. Our
contractor will begin construction as soon as permits are
given to begin the project.
The clubhouse is very busy with all types of events
on the calendar. All of the clubs are working hard for the
community. There are shows, dances and dinners scheduled
until the end of the year. Check the calendar and support
the hard working clubs that are providing entertainment
for all association members.
Thank You.
standing committee
sign ups
Sign-up sheets for the 2017 committees will be posted
on October 10th in the Clubhouse hallway and will be
taken down on November 10th by 12 noon. We urge you
to consider signing up for one or two committees. You
must sign up every year to be on a committee; you are not
automatically on a committee year after year. Standing
committees form the backbone of Lions Head South. These
volunteers make recommendations to the Trustees and keep
them informed on a multitude of issues.

LIONS PRIDE OCTOBER 2016 3 Architectural committee
John Cinosky
With rare exception the homes in our community are
very well kept. There are some of us due to age or financial
resources that may have difficulty keeping up outward
appearances. To that end I would like to form a group of
able-bodied men & women who might spare sometime and
effort to help keep our community beautiful.
If you have an interest in this project please contact
John Cinosky of the Architectural Committee @ 973-5456994, or leave your name and phone number at the office.
From The Architectural Committee:
As you know, there are unscrupulous contractors and
some people posing as contractors who prey on people who
live in communities such as ours.
As such the Architectural Committee will provide a
service to check if any contractor has a record of unfair
dealings. The department of consumer protection has a
database of violators which we have access to. Therefore,
if you wish to get an opinion regarding work you may be
planning on or in your home, call us.
We make no recommendations. Please note the office
has a list of plumbers, electricians, etc. that many residents
have found to be reliable and fair.
BYLAWS
Carol Carlson & Doris Laurence
HOW DO I GET HEARD
Our community is just like a small city. We have
Bylaws, Rules, Regulations and Policies, and Architectural
Regulations otherwise known as our governing documents.
When we purchased our homes we agreed to follow these
governing documents. Many of us never saw any of these
governing documents before we moved into our homes.
Some of us learned about them by trial and error. We did
something and were told you can’t do that as it’s in the
governing documents. What the heck is a Bylaw, Policy,
Rule, Regulation or Architectural Regulation? We soon
learned that the governing documents have much to say
about how our community is run. One of the biggest things
is that we must operate according to Robert’s Rules. Who
is Robert, you might ask. He actually created the rules
because he was embarrassed when he had to run a meeting
and there were no rules to govern how the meeting should
run. Of course, as with many things Robert’s Rules have
evolved and been added to across time. Most all meetings,
business, governments and organizations are run by these
Rules.
4 LIONS PRIDE OCTOBER 2016
What does it mean to us these Robert’s Rules? How
do I get heard? There are several ways to be heard by our
Board of Trustees.
There are several standing committees which report
monthly, and often more times than that to the Trustees.
Join the committee which handles the problem you are
having.
- The Bylaws can be changed, you just have
to follow Article 14 of the Bylaws to possibly
accomplish the change.
- You can write a letter to our Board of Trustees
explaining your concern, problem or question, be
sure to request a response from the Board.
- You can go to the office and ask our Administrator
Evie to place you on the next Trustee meeting’s
agenda where you can speak directly to the Board.
These meetings happen twice a month and are listed
on the calendar which is contained in the Pride
each month.
- Attending a residents meeting is not just to hear a
speaker and the Board report. It is where you can,
at the question and answer time, (usually at the end
of the meeting), raise your hand, and when called on
have an exchange with the Board. This may well be
the hardest part for many people as they don’t want
to speak in front of so many people for a variety of
reasons. I would just say that you may very well
have an issue that many in the audience also share.
You should never be made to feel embarrassed or
slighted, and I am sure that is never the goal of
any Trustee or any other resident. Your concerns
are important to you and may well be a concern of
many at the meeting.
Finally, you should not just complain to your friends
and neighbors. That only breeds discontent, resentment and
anger. Nothing ever has been accomplished that way. Call
a committee chair with your concerns. Join that committee,
contact the Board. These are all positive ways in which you
CAN effect change and get answers.

Donna Iversen, Chairperson
Our annual Fun Day (Sept. 16) will have taken place
at this writing and we thank Co-Chairs Barbara Hurley and
Bea Scanlon for stepping up to organize this event as well
as all the volunteers who signed up to help.
The course is scheduled to be closed for greens
aerification all day on Monday, September 12th and a half
day for tee box aerification on Tuesday, September 13th.
These much needed twice yearly tasks assure the continued
health and good condition of our already much-improved
course. This leaves plenty of time for the greens to regenerate in time of our Annual Tournament on Saturday,
October 15th. As a result of this work, the September 13th
Scramble was moved from the morning to 12:00 noon, with
Bill Leck and his co-workers Jim Mort and Chick Florio
planning for a light lunch following the event. The final
Scramble of the year will be held on Tuesday, October 11th
at 9:00 AM - volunteers needed to run it!
As for the Annual Tournament - some teams and
individuals have already signed up - but please don’t wait
until the last minute as this event requires a lot of planning.
Applications are available in both the main LHS Clubhouse
and in the LHCC Pro Shop. Price is $30 per person which
includes lunch. ABSOLUTE DEADLINE FOR ENTRY
IS SEPTEMBER 30th.
Many members have commented to me on the fine
work being done by our new Superintendent, Joe Elias,
and have suggested contributing cash as a holiday bonus
to show our appreciation. Anyone wishing to do this can
contact either myself or Joe Bill.
Our last General Membership Meeting of the year is
scheduled for Monday, October 17th at 7:00 PM. At this
meeting, four Director’s positions need to be filled. The
incumbents have expressed a willingness to continue for
another term, but anyone wishing to run for one of these
positions can complete a Nomination Petition (which
requires 20 signatures of members in good standing). In
addition, I would like some thoughts from the MGA (Men’s
League) members about limiting the handicap differential
to 5 strokes.
The Website Committee is working on the development
of a new project called “Meet Your Neighbor.” Starting
with Trustees and Chairpersons of Committees, the
monthly articles would introduce the greater community
to residents with a brief biography and photograph. Each
person will be given the opportunity to share information
that they choose and approve for publication on the
website. Since the biography will go out on the Internet,
our committee will carefully screen that information to
protect each individual involved.
Some residents have asked for help in navigating our
website. The Website Committee is preparing to offer
easy lessons to help anyone who is interested to learn how
to access and navigate our website so they can enjoy the
articles, photographs, videos, and so much more, that is
available.
An interest sheet will be posted for those who wish
to participate. This interest sheet will be posted on the
Activities bulletin board. This information will also be
found at www.lionsheadso.com. The Lions Head South
Website address, and The Lions Pride.

If you expect to be away from the community for the
winter months, please make arrangements to have the Lions
Pride mailed to you. The Board and Standing Committees
continue to work all year long on your behalf. It is important
to keep up with events here. If you decide not to have the
publications mailed, let the office know you will be leaving
so that the Pride won’t be left in your door. Likewise, when
you return in the spring, please inform the office so that
delivery will be resumed to your door.

Set in the early 1970’s Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter
tells a tale of Silas Jones, a black child of a single mother,
who grows up to be the only law enforcement officer, a
constable, employed by a small Mississippi town. Nothing
much has happened since a teenage girl disappeared twenty
years before on a date with Silas’ one time childhood
friend, Larry Ott, the white son of a local working family.
No evidence or body was ever found thus Larry could not
be convicted of a crime but was shunned by the town and
sentenced to a solitary existence. When the daughter of
the town’s most prominent family goes missing the town
again looks at Larry and Silas for answers. Both men are
forced to confront each other and the past finding answers
that neither expected. With only one exception the group
gave the book rave reviews.

LIONS PRIDE OCTOBER 2016 7 1/8 BULLETIN
The Garden club
by Carmela Ferraro
With the summer weather starting to fade, we are
beginning to think of what comes next - beautiful fall!
Mums and scarecrows have begun to sprout up all over
bringing new color to our homes and grounds. What can’t
be mistaken is the pride taken by our community in keeping
everything looking pristine.
Keeping our plants and flowers looking good can
be daunting especially if you have one of the many
groundhogs who live amongst us visiting your property.
One of the best ways to rid yourself of these critters is
simply to keep annoying them as reported by NJ.com. If
you know where their burrow is, throw some used cat litter
into it. They are meticulous animals who are very sensitive
to the cleanliness of their homes. Gravel or fertilizer can
also work. You must do this daily until they get fed up
and move out. A constantly playing radio may also prove
effective. As anyone who is familiar with these little
buggers knows, they can do a lot of damage to a garden.
Once your gardening chores for the season winds
down, you may want to clean out your bird feeders and
get ready for our feather friends. In addition, in order to
get a jump on spring, you may also want to spruce up your
garden tools. A good rust buster is old fashioned naval jelly.
Brush on, leave for ten minutes and rinse with plain water.
Follow with a light coat of WD40. Sharpening pruners may
also be in order.
If you still long for the good old gardening days of
spring and summer, you can always start leafing through
the many gardening magazines available to plan for spring
or just dote on your houseplants! They need your care too.
A little shower in your kitchen sink will perk them up as
you may have neglected them with all of your outside work
taking your time.
And finally, as you may have heard or noticed two of
our beautiful planters on the corner of Lions Head Drive
and Yorkwood Drive (by the RV lot), were stolen in broad
daylight in July, leaving us with just one planter there. The
theft was reported. Just a heads-up that things like this can
happen in our community and we all need to be vigilant.

last month was enjoyed by 57 people. Thanks to John
Castellano for organizing this event. At this writing the
Wildwood Trip will have taken place. We will report on
that trip in the next Pride issue.
Lions head men’s club
Joe Bill
Joe Bill has served as Vice President of the Men’s
Club for two years and currently is serving as the President
for a two-year term which expires at the end of 2016. Joe
has done an outstanding job in these positions, but will
no longer serve after the end of this year. This leaves a
void which someone must step up and fill - preferably
at the upcoming meeting on October 5th. Likewise, Bill
Leck, who has been the membership chairman for many
years, will be stepping down. This also leaves a void in
an important position for the membership. We also need
a program chairman to help arrange for programs of
interest at each meeting. Both Joe and Bill will work with
whomever steps up to insure a smooth transition.
Upcoming events are “Italian Night” on October 1,
“Night at the Races” (and beefsteak dinner) on November
5th, and our Annual Holiday Party on December 6th at
the Crystal Point. Also coming up on December 10th is
“Breakfast with Santa”. Mark your calendars and see the
bulletin boards for more information.
PRESIDENTS COMMENTS (by Joe Bill)
Our Lakewood Blue Claws outing was held in August
with a total of 38 people attending who enjoyed the game,
food and fireworks. Sundae Sunday actually took place
poolside on Sunday, August 7th, due to a rain cancellation
on Saturday - thanks to John Castellano, Ralpho Rizzolo,
Sal Severini, Joe Bivona, Jim Mort and Butch Wood for
running this event. Doolan’s Lunch, Dance and Show
Now that summer is coming to a close, our
Thursday Balance and Flo class will resume. Our
new teacher will be Nicole with classes being held
on September 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, October 6th, 13th, and
27th. The total cost for classes is $38.50. Please make
checks payable to “Clark Fitness” and register with
Nicole on the 8th. The class time will be 1:00 PM.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 5th at 11:30
AM. Please come out and bring a friend.

Sandy Wood, President
Eggplant Caponata
On Saturday, October
28th at 7:00 pm, the Social
Committee will host a Harvest
Moon Dance to celebrate the
beautiful Autumn season.
The tickets will be on sale for
$15.00 in the clubhouse on
September 26, October 3, 10
and 17. A fabulous Autumn
Dessert will be available,
along with water, coffee and tea. Chairperson for this
event is Dot O’Brien.
Appearing for the first time in the Lion’s Den will
be the fabulous musical duo, “Somers and Steel”.
Melodie Somers comes from a theatrical
background as an actress in New York and regional
theaters and has been on Broadway three times.
Don Adamczyk is a bass player and singer who has
performed with Jersey bands, including the Chatter
Band who performed regularly at the Surf Club.
So come laugh, dance and sing along to your oldies
favorites from the 50s, 60s and beyond!
Once again, my thanks go to Lucy Hubert for
sharing this recipe with us.
1 lg. or 2 sm. eggplant (skin on)
2 zucchini (skin on)
4-5 carrots
2 bell peppers any colors (I prefer red & yellow)
1 med. Onion
1-2 tsp. minced garlic or 2-3 fresh cloves
Olive oil (approx. 1/4 to 3/4 cup)
Francesco Rinaldi tomato & basil sauce (or any
flavor)
Adobo seasoning
Montreal Steak seasoning
Salt & Pepper to taste
Fresh Basil
Optional: potatoes, pignoles (pine nuts) or walnuts,
raisins, capers, black or green olives
Cover bottom of lg. roasting pan with approx. 1/4
of the tomato sauce. Dice eggplant, zucchini, carrots,
peppers, & onion approx. 1” pieces, or any size you
prefer. Mix together, adding garlic, in roasting pan.
Evenly pour olive oil & rest of tomato sauce over
mix.
Sprinkle seasonings & basil on top.
Library
Cover & bake @ 375 for 1 hr. Stir & continue
to bake until vegetables reach desired consistency
(approx. 20-30 min.)
Just an update, the book sale that we donated
our discarded books to the American Association of
University for Women at their annual book sale raised
$27,000. Thanks to all of our residents that donate
books to our library.
We are continuously getting new books donated to
our library. Come in and look them over, I’m sure you
will find something that you would enjoy reading. We
have fine libraries in Brick, but ours is easier to get to
and you are in and out before you know it.
If you get involved in your book, just sit down in
front of our fireplace and enjoy reading it there. You
also will meet wonderful people who you can discuss
things with or just enjoy their company.
This is a very flexible recipe. Adjust the ingredients
to suit your individual taste. Cooking time can also be
adjusted to determine how soft or crunchy you like
your veggies. Larger pieces are like a stew & can be
served as a side vegetable dish or with chicken strips
for a complete meal. Smaller pieces can be served as
a spread over warm Italian or French bread, especially
with the olives in it.

bowling league 2016-2017
This was written on the first day of bowling.
We have 10 teams, but need 2 bowlers to make
each a 4 person team. If you wish to bowl call Peter
Brennan at 732-920-0723.
We had a few good games today, as follows:
Tom Curtis 210
Tino Yodice 203
Jerry Cirrenello 202
No team won 7 points and we have a tie for first
with five teams winning 5 points and losing 2 points.
Which also means the other 5 teams won 2 points and
lost 5 points, like a mirror image.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER
Wally Amos, The Cookie Kahuna
Sumner Redstone was 76 years old when he purchased CBS Television. I remember
saying to myself, “Obviously age was not a criteria for doing what you love. Doing what
you love was the only criteria.” I turned 80 on July 1st. I have a new cookie company,
The Cookie Kahuna. I am alive, alert, awake and enthusiastic about life. I wake up each
morning thankful that I am still breathing, which is a strong indication I am very much
alive. The reality is, you are never too young or too old to pursue your dreams and your
deeperst desires. Just say yes to life--your life!
People ask Wally how he can keep going and he responds, “How can I stop, especially
since I love what I am doing and I believe I will be successful again?” The only reason
people fail is because they quit! When you wake up in the morning you need three things:
soemthing to do, someplace to do it and someone to do it with. If you do not love what
you are doing, you are just taking up space. Loving what you are doing is the reward.
As Satchel Page, who played baseball when he was 50, “How old would you be if
you did not know how old you were?” Now, that is deep wisdom.

We had our first meeting of the season on Wednesday, September 21st. We had a wonderful program, which was
provided by The Seeing Eye Foundation of Morristown, and it was very informative and thoroughly enjoyable.
Our Health Fair is scheduled for Monday, October 3rd from 9:00-12:00 noon in the Lions’ Den. Please be sure to
bring your Medicare and/or insurance cards with you. Friends and family are welcome at the Health Fair. Flu shots will
be administered.
On Wednesday, October 19th we will be having a fashion show provided by Lynne’s Boutique of Point Pleasant
Beach. Lynne’s Boutique carries clothing for petites, plus size and every size in between. Please mark your calendar
if you plan on attending as Lynne will be providing us with a very fashionable show.
As I mentioned previously, our Tricky Tray will be on Saturday, October 22nd. Be sure to purchase your tickets
early. We have some fantastic gift baskets for this event and we don’t want you to miss out on any of it. One of the gifts
will be a flat screen TV and another is a Disney Vacation. I’m not going to mention any other items as we want you
to be totally surprised by all the fabulous gifts Jane and her wonderful Committee are providing for the Tricky Tray.
Please contact Jane Bazaz or myself if you would like to donate an item for this event. All items must be new. We
cannot accept any used items for the Tricky Tray. Your help in making the Tricky Tray a successful event is greatly
appreciated by all of the Lionettes and the organizations which we donate to.
Please mark your calendars for our Holiday Luncheon on Wednesday, December 14th at Simko’s in Brielle.

Do you suffer from any of
the following conditions?
Get in on the relief!
“I was diagnosed with peripheral
neuropathy in 2006. My neurologist
prescribed Neurotin, which didn’t help.
After treatment of MicroVas,
• Numbness
• Pain when you walk
• Sharp, electrical-like pain
• Burning or tingling
• Difficulty sleeping from
leg or foot discomfort
• Muscle weakness
• Sensitivity to touch
Peripheral Neuropathy
is a condition that affects millions of Americans,
commonly resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and
other painful symptoms in the hands, legs and feet.
This pain changes your life and affects how you work,
how you play and how you live.
What does Peripheral Neuropathy
look like?

The effects of this program can be felt on the first
few visits. This treatment restores, stabilizes, and
rebuilds the nerves in your extremities. Treatment has
also been effective in addressing painful symptoms
of arthritis, MS, and other forms of chronic pain,
Patients generally feel relief physically throughout
the treatment period and even feel better emotionally
after experiencing a reduction in pain.
Why Northeast Spine & Sports Medicine?
Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage
to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different
kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies
– some are the result of a disease like diabetes,
while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still
others are the result of an injury or compression on
the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is
imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as
possible to prevent permenant damage.
Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing
that thir symptoms may be due to Peripheral
Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get
worse, including numbness, burning or tingling
sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment
options have been limited to a small assortment of
pain medications, which can lead to futher issues.
Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has
never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of
the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.
