It’s truly been a pleasure to continue building on our adult education offerings
this year. We’re about to conclude our fifth year of Emanu-El University. Additionally,
for the last three years, I’ve taught a class on Thursday mornings (this year on selected
portions of the Talmud), and added a discussion group about the weekly Torah portion
prior to our Saturday morning services (Danish & D’rash). And in February, we started a
Tuesday 6PM class called “Jewish Mysteries … Revealed!”, an opportunity to go through
the fundamentals and meanings of some of Judaism's basic practices.
I love having the chance to teach to people of all ages. However, as we have
done in past years, these programs will stop prior to Memorial Day and resume just
before Labor Day (with the exception of Danish & D’rash, which will take place most
Saturdays this summer). I feel that it’s important to take time in the summer to regroup
and consider how we can start anew at the end of August.
That being said, Jewish learning is a constant responsibility. So, while we won’t
be meeting for formal classes over the summer, I’d like to suggest that we take some
time to check out a couple of books to tide you over until the fall. I’d like to suggest two
of the best books for the topics we cover:

Swimming in the Sea of Talmud by Michael Katz and Gershon Schwartz. According to
Google Books: “If you have found the study of Talmud daunting, Swimming in the Sea
of Talmud is a perfect jumping off point for this central body of rabbinic literature; it
helps apply the Talmud's lessons to the issues and conflicts of modern life, including
business ethics, sexuality, family dynamics, and their connection to a satisfying and
meaningful life. In an original and engaging format, the authors provide
contemporary applications of the principles embedded within the ancient texts,
presenting over 90 concise, self-contained proverbs from the Babylonian Talmud
with a new ‘user-friendly’ translation of the Hebrew and Aramaic text.”

Entering Jewish Prayer by Reuven Hammer. Google Books again: “‘Learning about
prayer is a way of entering the world of Jewish tradition,’ Rabbi Hammer writes, and
the Siddur — the Jewish prayerbook — is the best possible introduction into that
world. In it, one is brought face-to-face with Judaism's central struggle for an
understanding of God, human life, and the world. Mastery of the Siddur enables one
to worship as a Jew and to grasp the essence of Judaism. Now, in this engaging and
highly informative book, Rabbi Hammer provides an introduction to the liturgy of
the Siddur. More than a "how-to" guide, Entering Jewish Prayer deals with the basic
issues in prayer for the modern worshipper; the historical compilation of the Siddur;
the orchestration of the daily, Sabbath, and festival prayers; the themes of special
prayers, such as the Blessing After Meals and the Kaddish; and the essential
experience of making prayer a vital part of one's life. For anyone who has ever felt
lost or confused at a Jewish service, or anyone interested in an introduction to this
facet of Jewish literacy, Entering Jewish Prayer provides a key to meaningful
participation and spiritual growth.”
Whether you choose these books or something different, I hope we can all take
some time this summer to rest our bodies, and open our minds.

Every May I think of Julie Andrews singing the quintessential song from Camelot. “Tra
la! It’s May! The lusty month of May!” I see her dancing around in her flowing skirt
creating excitement for things to come. I just can’t help myself. It puts me in the spirit
of excitement for new and good things in the new month! In this case, at Synagogue
Emanu-El.
May is the month for the installation of our Officers and Board. This year I believe we
have a truly outstanding group. We bring a vision that will leave our synagogue in
excellent shape both spiritually and financially. Of course this has always been the focus
of the leadership at Synagogue Emanu-El and the past leadership has done a fine job of
it.
What makes this time unique is the lack of controversy. There are no issues that detract
from maintaining the present and planning for the future. I don’t foresee any issues out
there that will detract from this. We’re in the best financial shape we’ve been in in years.
Again, this is due in large part to the work of past leadership, that of our current
treasurer and financial secretary, and you, the members of our congregation. There’s
always opportunity for improvement and that will be an initiative in the coming year.
Most important to our success has been your willingness to volunteer. Patti Bagg did a
magnificent job with our library. Bob Lovinger has done an equally terrific job leading
Hazak. They’re both stepping down and will be missed. But, it’s an opportunity for
others to step up and take their place. Many of you volunteer to sit on committees for
the normal running of the synagogue and for special programs and fundraisers. We
simply couldn’t offer these wonderful programs and events without your help.
Your input is most valuable to the Strategic Plan we’re developing. The participation in
the focus groups that Scott LeRoy led was very heartening. The survey that we’ve sent
out will be key in developing this plan because it will tell us what you expect and what
you are looking for. It will help answer important questions, such as: why we’re here as a
synagogue; what do we want to get out of the organization; what do we need; etc.
Finally, my first year as your president was very rewarding. It’s given me an opportunity
to get to know many more of you on a much deeper level. It’s allowed me to understand
just how important this organization is to you in your lives. During my Navy career I
was given command of ships where “special trust and confidence” was placed in me to
carry out the many tasks of a ship’s captain. Although the special trust and confidence
was bestowed upon me by that position I felt that I had to earn it every day with both
my officers and men and my superiors. Likewise, you’ve bestowed great trust and
confidence by electing me your President. I promise that just as I did in the Navy, I will
do all that I can to earn that trust and confidence every day. If there is anything I can do
better, please let me know.

My dear community,
As I complete my term as Sisterhood president and reflect back on the last two years, it is hard to really
organize my thoughts. Back then I really did not know much about Sisterhood, and therefore some aspects of
being Jewish. Judaism is about action and experiences. There is a richness of living and doing Jewish things. Our
senses come alive and our souls are nourished. My time with Sisterhood has allowed me to branch out into other
areas of the Synagogue and it has given me an opportunity to fully join our wonderful community. I am thankful
to have had the opportunity to have worked with a truly remarkable group of people. The board has spent
countless hours planning, shopping, organizing, and schlepping to provide programs and services for the women
of our Synagogue. Above all, it is my hope that Sisterhood has provided friendship. I appreciate all the wonderful
volunteers that have made our programs successful. We could not have accomplished so much without the help
and support of the staff and our Rabbi. So it is with much gratitude that I thank everyone for the support and
guidance shown to me. Congratulations to the new Sisterhood board, who will be installed Sunday, May 4th, at
the home of Ruth and Eric Oser, 4 Hobonny Lane, at 10AM for brunch. Dara Rosenblatt, Jewish Student Life
Program Coordinator at College of Charleston Hillel, will speak about her personal journey and what is going on
with Jewish college students today. Please contact me if you can bring a dish to Installation. Thank you all so

A Message from Kayla Sculnick - COSY Youth Advisor
This past year has been a wonderful one. I cannot even begin to convey to you all how impressed I am with our
USYers. I’m honored to be their advisor. Our 2013-2014 Board comprised of Abby LeRoy as President, Jasmine Hubara as
Vice President of Programming, Ari Levine as Vice President of Religious Education, Shoshi Weiss as Vice President of
Social Action/Tikun Olam, Noa Leigh Hubara and Nate LeRoy as Co-Vice Presidents of Membership/Kadima, Anna
Book as Vice President of Communications, and Ava Hoffman as Historian.
This year, the board boosted our membership by 400%, had representation at every convention this year, hosted a
convention, and won eight awards. Our chapter is so wonderful and impressive that we have been chosen as one of the
chapters of the year in our entire region, HaNegev, and we have also been chosen to represent our region as an
International Chapter of the Year. Abby LeRoy will be serving as a Subregional Vice President and Jasmine Hubara will be
serving as Regional Religious Education Vice President. It is with your support that we are able to accomplish our goals and
beyond. I am so excited to see what next year’s board will bring us and to watch our youth continue to flourish and make
an impact upon our greater community.

Presenter: Nanci Kestenbaum
Nanci Kestenbaum will present a discussion on healthy eating
for seniors and utilizing a plant-based diet. She will make some
food samples to distribute during the presentation. As Nanci is
responsible for recruiting CAREgivers for her firm, she will
also present the part-time job opportunities to the Hazak
participants. One way for seniors to stay healthy and maintain
their independence is to interact with other people. Retired
people looking to assist others make up a large portion of the
employees of her firm.

A N O T E F R O M M AYA H I R S C H K U P C H I K
It has been just over two weeks since my last day as director of Synagogue Emanu-El. As I’m trying to
wrap my head around the fact that we will really be moving back to Israel in a few months, I find it extremely
difficult to start planning for the new chapter of our lives, without first allowing for some time to process the end
of the current one. That, my friends, is a little challenging for me. The obvious reason for it is that my family and I
love Charleston. We love our home, the beautiful town, the amazing wildlife. We love our community, our
friends, our everyday lives and routines. Who wants to think about and process the end of so many things they
love? Not me. On top of that, my work at Synagogue Emanu-El has had such a significant influence on my life
and my identity that it feels almost surreal not to be still working there.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you. Thank you for taking the chance and hiring me- an Israeli
who googled “Conservative Judaism” before her interview. Thank you for teaching me so much about this
synagogue, this community and what it means to be an American (and Southern!) Jew. I thought I knew, but I had
no idea… Thank you for showing me what it means to be part of a community- I have never experienced that
before. The way people who are not even my friends participated in my life still astonishes me- it is so beautiful
and I hope you don’t take it for granted when you think of your Emanu-El family. All the lovely gifts, cards and
wishes we have received when our beautiful daughter Noga was born and on a very different note- all the
condolences, hugs and support I have received recently, when my father suddenly passed away, turned clichés like
“there for you,” “for better and for worse,” and “extended family” into simple, tangible and oh-so-meaningful
support. Thank you for bringing me closer to the most ancient and basic side of my Jewish identity through
services and prayers. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have a naming ceremony, an Aliyah, and even
chant Torah. Thank you for your compliments and reinforcements, they always made me smile. Thank you also
for your complaints and frustrations, they made me better at my job. Thank you for taking such good care of the
Emanu-El staff- I was fortunate to join a highly knowledgeable, experienced and professional group of people.
The fact they are all there for so many years speaks volumes about the unique work environment this
congregation provides.
Special thanks to Rabbi Rosenbaum for his advice, patience and everything else; to Daphne for menus,
creativity and so much more; to Jane for her amazing memory and wisdom; to Leah for reading my mind,
organizing everything and for cupcakes; to James for the biggest heart; to Evelyn for always making me laugh; to
Larry for his kindness and exceptional desire to develop and learn. I was extremely lucky to have Ellen
Steinberg and Stan Chepenik as my direct supervisors- thank you Ellen for your faith in me, and for providing
excellent guidance and much inspiration. Thank you Stan for your absolute trust in me, great personality and for
always wanting to listen. I tried to add a list of some more names, just those I’ve closely worked with- the hard
core of volunteers and make-it-happen people, but you are too many and I don’t want to forget anyone. Thank
you all for being the main reason Synagogue Emanu-El is awesome.
I have tried to take Synagoogue Emanu-El to the next level in several aspects, and I am extremely proud
of some major accomplishments and successes we have experienced together. There is still
(always!) so much to do and improve and Ruthie Simmons is now the fortunate one who gets to lead this truly
amazing congregation to future levels of success. Good luck Ruthie! I know you will do great.
Y’all will continue building this magnificent heritage. I haven’t left yet and I already can’t wait to visit.
