What happens when a longstanding tradition becomes tired and worn? Is it best
to renew and change it, or to leave it behind altogether?
Take, for example, Selichot. It is, traditionally, an hour-long service held at
midnight on the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah (or, in some years, the Saturday prior to

It’s that time of year again. Time for the personal “rededication and renewal” that Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur afford us. These holidays are a time to consider the past
year and contemplate how we, as individuals and a community, can make the future
better.
Our synagogue leadership works hard to make a difference for our Emanu-El
community. We continue to work toward a strategic plan for the future that will chart a
path for the years to come. We’ve heard your concerns and have sought to
implement some of your ideas before we have a final plan. You stressed that you
wanted music with instruments in our service, and we developed a plan to introduce
this on Friday nights starting in September. You wanted a revision to the religious
school structure that would change both the days of attendance as well as the
curriculum. This has been done. It may need tweaking in the future, but the change has
been made. We continue to listen to you and, hopefully, will implement the
changes that will make our community stronger in the future.
One thing I’d very much like to see this year is 100% participation by our congregation
in the annual Kol Nidre appeal. Complete participation by all of you would be a
singular achievement and would speak volumes about our congregational commitment
to our synagogue. What you can give is up to you. I ask only that you pledge some
amount, an amount you are comfortable with. It’s simply a truism that money is the
engine that powers the synagogue. We can have the best programs, staff, and services,
but if we can’t pay the bills we will cease to exist as an organization. Our financial
outlook is pretty fair for this coming year. The only way we can keep it that way is
through your support and commitment. Fundraising is always a priority so we can keep
moving forward.
This is my second year as President and I must admit it’s been Fun (capital F intended)
as well as a challenge. We have some wonderful programs planned that should appeal
to all. We listen to you and you are not shy about sharing your opinions. We couldn’t
keep moving forward without all of you. So please keep it up!

Book of Life.

Sisterhood had a busy month of August, and I know most of you
have received a mailbox full of forms and envelopes. From dues renewal
to High Holy Day Greetings, Floral Book entries, to Apples & Honey,
Sisterhood has been busy. It is so important to return all these requests as
soon as possible, especially the Floral Book forms; it is a large job to
produce the book. The Apples & Honey Bags are a deal and a half! Wow!
Send sweet New Year Greetings, and they will be hand-delivered by
Sisterhood to anyone in the Tri-County area.
Sisterhood had a morning of gleaning at Limehouse Farms on
August 4th (a rainy day!) It was joint event with Men’s Club, and I am
happy to say we sent more than 600 pounds of fresh vegetables to the
Kosher Food Pantry. It is so satisfying to be able to help others; please
consider joining in on our next gleaning adventure. Watch for upcoming
dates!
Book Club was held at the home of Evelyn Needle on August 20th,
and we discussed The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. The next
Book Club will be September 17th at the home of Gloria Adelson, and we
will be reading Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn. Pick up the book
and come along; there is always a lively discussion.
Sisterhood and Men’s Club will host our Paid-Up Membership Brunch on Sunday, September 14th. It is
free to all paid up members. Remember you can also pay your dues at the brunch. Men’s Club members will be
cooking breakfast. The speaker will be, Abby LeRoy, who has most recently returned from Israel and will speak
on the conditions of the State.
The High Holy Days are coming up; it’s a time for us to reflect on the past year and gain hope for a more
promising new year, renewed strength and inner peace so we may go forward energized and able to accomplish
our goals. I wish everyone a wonderful New Year and an easy fast. May there be peace for Israel.

MEN’S CLUB — CHARLES RICHARDS
The Men’s Club had an enjoyable summer with our
Men’s Night at the Joe ballgame and our recent Sunset Harbor
Cruise. It is time to transition to our fall schedule!
Our next event will be the combined Sisterhood/Men’s
Clubs paid up brunch on Sunday September 14th. Drawing for
the Men’s Club President parking space will take place during the
brunch. A donation of $1 per ticket will give you a chance to
have a reserved parking space to use during the High Holy Days.
We will continue to support Sisterhood with their
gleaning of crops. This important community service project
provides food to many needy individuals.
Be prepared for a busy October. On October 5th, we
will build our Sukkah along with members of YAD. This will be
followed by Beer & Burgers in the Sukkah on October 14th with
our friends from the KKBE Brotherhood.
May the sounding of the shofar bring joy, peace,

USY EVENTS
During these last few summer months, our USY’ers traveled all
over; some went to summer camps, Florida, and even Israel. However, all
this traveling doesn’t keep COSY apart for very long! COSY members
hosted their kick-off event of the year: Olaf the Polar Bear’s 2nd birthday!
We celebrated the occasion, and afterward, many USY’ers attended the rally
for Israel. This event was just the beginning of an amazingly awesome year
with COSY. September has many great activities planned for all ages - not
just USY.
There will be a Tot Shabbat on September 13th, led by Noa Hubara
and Aaron Levine. Junior Congregation will be led by Ari Levine on September 27th. September 14th, the COSY chapter board is having a meeting,
and then the very first Tichon Aruchat Ivrit (a Hebrew meal). This program
will be a dinner provided for high-schoolers; however, we will only be
speaking Hebrew! This program was made for all levels of Hebrew speakers
- people who know a few words, people who have been taught before, and
even people who only know how to say “falafel”! This program will be led
by Tzivia Browdy and Kayla Sculnick. We will also be hosting a Selichot
program on September 20th for the congregation, followed by a lock-in for
USY’ers only. On Rosh Hashanah (both days) and Yom Kippur, all 7th12th graders are welcome to join the Teen Talk, which will be led by Lara
LeRoy.
This month is going to be a really great month of events, so make
sure to get yourself/your children involved!!

The symbolic casting
off of sins, will take
place on Thursday,
September 25th, the first day of
Rosh Hashanah, at 6:00PM at the new
Northbridge Park.
Bring your own bread for a brief ritual of psalms and readings,
followed by throwing our bread into the water to symbolically
dispose of our sins, calling upon God to cast our sins to the depth
of the waters.
At the conclusion of Tashlich,
refreshments will be served back at the Synagogue, followed

Youth Services will be held on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings.

All youth services will begin at approximately 11:00AM and will last one hour or more.

Do you know you can search the Synagogue library from your home
computer? Just go to the Synagogue’s home page. Click on the link to the
library and follow the directions.
Do you know the library has an extensive collection of fiction? Do you want
to find a recipe like your Bubbe used to make? Check out our
collection of cookbooks. Are you trying to find information on the way
things were when your family emigrated? Does your child need to do
research for a paper? Our library has many hidden treasures just waiting to
be discovered.
We have kept busy this summer cataloging donated books we have received
from many different congregants. While we welcome donations, we can
only accept one copy of a given book due to space constraints. All books
must have Jewish content - not just a Jewish author. So, unfortunately we
have not been able to accept all the books offered to us. Duplicate books are
either returned to the donor or placed on the cart in the lobby for others to
take. Most of the donations have been to the adult library. We really could
use more donation of gently used preschool, easy reader and juvenile books.
Please leave any donated books in the Synagogue office-not in the library.
Since taking over the library with the help of Joan Feldman and Sandra
Grauer, my biggest challenge has been to get my work done when all I really
want to do is sit in one of our comfortable chairs and read a book - or two or three! As my favorite sweat-shirt says: “So many books; so little time!”

Students have the choice of three classes, which take place concurrently:
JUDAISM 101 (INSTRUCTOR: LARA LEROY): A thorough introduction to Judaism. Explore customs, rituals, and
holidays. Appropriate for introductory learners, those looking for a “refresher course”, and for those considering
converting to Judaism.
THE JEWISH CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF WORLD CIVILIZATION (INSTRUCTOR: ROBERT
LOVINGER, PHD): The concept of this course is to look at what role Jews, Judaism, and Jewish thinking played
in the development of world civilizations. This will be done by reading and discussing the Thomas Cahill series
“The Hinges of History,” plus some supplementary readings.
ADULT B’NAI MITZVAH (INSTRUCTORS: PAM COYLE & RABBI ADAM J. ROSENBAUM): Learn trope
(Torah/Haftarah cantillation) and the structure and content of Shabbat services – and help to lead it yourself at
Emanu-El! Participation pending, the Adult B’nai Mitzvah service will take place Saturday, May 16, 2015.
Participants must be Emanu-El members.
Tuition: $54 for one semester, $100 for both semesters, $136 for the full year of Adult B’nai Mitzvah.

ABOUT THE JOE ENGEL FUND
Joe Engel Holocaust Education Fund Guidelines
Purpose
The purpose of the Fund is to subsidize Holocaust education opportunities such as trips to Holocaust museums in Washington, DC, and
elsewhere, and participation in the March of the Living and other such trips to Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe.
Who is eligible?
The Fund is for teens, ages 13 – 19, whose parent(s) are members of Synagogue Emanu-El.
What is the process for accessing funds?
Teens requesting funds must complete an application (available at the synagogue office). A Fund committee will review the application
and determine the award.
Participant Obligation
Each grantee will be required to make a presentation about the experience. This may be during Shabbat services or for Sisterhood or
Men’s Club.
