four steps to better performance
Four steps to better performance
This year, S&S Cycle introduces some great new products for late model Harley-Davidson® big twins. With the
addition of these new items, we can also suggest performance upgrades for these motorcycles that can be done in
steps, which allow riders to use the parts they purchase in the early steps to compliment the parts they add in the
later steps. There are several advantages to this approach. First of all, you can go faster right away, without having
to pay a huge bill all at once. Then, as your budget allows or as your lust for power demands, you can go to the next
step (also affordable). And of course, this way, you always have something to look forward to... the next step!
There are four steps in our program, and you can see the details and the results you can expect from each step
starting on Page 2 of this brochure.

Gimme Four Steps
For 2007-Up Late Model Big Twins
If you have a new bike and are considering high performance modifications, the expense can seem pretty daunting.
However, if done one step at a time, these modifications can be pretty affordable. Here is a series of performance upgrades
that can help you go fast and will fit any budget. The idea is to install some key components that will give you more power
right now. Later, installing additional parts to what you already have will produce even more power. That way, you can
build up to a respectable level of performance without having to make a large investment all at once. Of course, you can
start at any step you want to. If you want the big numbers right away, just go for it and get everything at once.
Step 1 Intake and Exhaust
One of the most cost effective ways to improve performance is a high
flowing air cleaner kit and a set of high performance slip-on mufflers
from S&S®. These parts are also required components of any more
serious performance package.
More slip-on muffler information on page 6

This dyno chart shows a stock 2009 FLHT and the
improvement in performance with a set of S&S slipon bagger mufflers and a teardrop air cleaner or an
S&S tuned induction system.

Step 2 Cams
The addition of cams is the next step toward higher performance. Several types
of cams are available, and it is important to decide what cams are best suited to
your immediate needs and what cams will be needed to achieve your long-term
goals. If you can choose cams that will work for both, you will save money. For
more torque we recommend the S&S® 551 cams for dressers, and the S&S 583
cam for Dyna® and Softail® models. For more top end horsepower, we suggest
the S&S 585 cams. Dealer installation of cams is recommended, and EFI tuning is
generally required. We recommend the Harley-Davidson® Race Tuner or Dynojet®
Power Commander® for EFI tuning.

Step 3 97" and 106" big bore kit
The next step is to increase the displacement of your engine. The S&S® 97" Big Bore Top End Kit for 1999-’06 88"
engines or the 106" Top End Big Bore Kit for 2007-up 96" engines are an easy and cost effective way to do it. Simply
replace the stock pistons and cylinders with the S&S 106" Top End Big Bore Kit. No machining or flywheel rebalancing
required. Cams, exhaust, and intake components from steps 1 and 2 will work great with the 106" Big Bore Top End
Kit. Dealer installation recommended. Larger fuel injectors, such as the Screamin' Eagle®, may be required.
More Big Bore Kit Information on page 12

This dyno chart shows a stock 2009 FLHT compared to the same bike with an S&S 106" Big Bore
Top End Kit, along with the set of S&S slip-on bagger mufflers, a teardrop air cleaner, and a set
of S&S 551 cams installed in steps 1 and 2. This combination is extremely useful for bagger
applications because of the great increase in torque. For lighter bikes, or if more horsepower is
your goal, the 585 cam will result in somewhat less torque, but more horsepower.

Step 4 CNC Ported heads
After the displacement of an engine has been increased, and high performance
intake, exhaust and cams have been installed, the next step is to make the
heads flow better. For this, S&S offers several options. The most economical
route is to have S&S® CNC port your stock heads. This can be done on an
exchange or rework basis (see page 8). The other option is to purchase new
S&S cylinder heads. Either way, the increased flow of the intake and exhaust
ports will allow you to take advantage of the extra displacement by filling it
with more air. Dealer installation is recommended and EFI tuning is required.
We recommend the S&S VFI modules, Harley-Davidson® Race Tuner, or
Dynojet® Power Commander® for EFI tuning. Larger fuel injectors, such as the
Screamin' Eagle®, will be required.
For even more horsepower, consider a set of cams with more radical lift and
timing such as the Crane 296 cam.

The CNC Difference
Choose The Right Cam For You
The dyno chart compares a stock 2009 FLHT (black curves) with the same bike after an S&S
106" Big Bore Top End Kit, 585 cams and S&S slip on mufflers, and an S&S teardrop AC
were installed (blue curves). The top (red curves) show the same engine after the heads
were CNC ported and a 58mm throttle body was installed. Both 106" engines perform
much better than stock, and are pretty comparable to each other until about 3500 rpm.
At that point the engine with CNC heads continues to increase in torque and horsepower
because it can still get enough air.
This dyno chart compares a stock 96" 2009 FLHT on
the same bike with an S&S 106" Big Bore Top End
Kit with CNC ported heads, S&S slip-on mufflers,
performance intake, and two different cams. The
blue curves represent the 106 with S&S 551 touring
cams and S&S teardrop air cleaner on the stock 50mm
throttle body. Great torque for performance touring
applications. The red curves show the S&S 585 cams
with a 58mm throttle body. The increased duration
of the 585 reduces low and midrange torque, but the
combination of more aggressive valve timing, higher
lift and a larger throttle body significantly increases
usable rpm and top end horsepower. A good choice
for lighter bikes and racing applications. Both engines
were tuned with Screamin' Eagle® Race Tuner.
Notes:
• If your final goal is a really big inch engine like our 124" Hot Set Up Kit®, it is not
practical to build that engine in steps.
• S&S CNC ported heads are only available through S&S dealers.
• CNC ported heads are not available for Harley-Davidson® CVO vehicles.
• It should be noted that more radical cams will produce more top end horsepower,
but may reduce low and midrange torque. Consider which is more important to your
personal style of riding.

THREE MOST POPULAR GRINDS
Performance cams for all RPM ranges.
Something for everyone.
S&S® set out to develop a new group of bolt in cams for 2007-up big twins.
The three design targets were low end torque for touring, peak horsepower
and a cam that would offer the best possible combination between torque and
horsepower. The 551 emerged as the touring cam and the 583 is a great over all
cam. The proven 585 posted the best results for peak horsepower.
551
Torque Cam
• Optimized for a 2007-up 96 to 106 CID touring bike
with slip-on mufflers and 9.0 to 10.0:1 compression
• Best bolt-in cam available for dressers
• Pulls hard from idle to 4000 rpm.
583 Midrange Cam
• Optimized for use as a great over-all cam in the Softail®/
Dyna® lines, but can be used in any 2007-up big twin model.
• Provides strong low end torque and horsepower that you
can really feel.
• Strongest from 1500-5000 in a Softail/Dyna application.
585 Horsepower Cam
• Optimized for a 2007-up Softail or 2006-up Dyna 96 to 106
CID with slip-on mufflers, high flow air filter and 9.0 to 10.5:1
compression.
• Great results from 3000-6000 rpm.
NOTE: These cams were optimized for use with stock headpipes and performance
slip-on mufflers.

S&S® Quickee Pushrods
Sometimes one thing leads to another.
Originally, S&S developed a pushrod with a new type of adjuster for use with S&S late style tappet guides
for shovelhead engines. Since we didn’t want to have to pull the heads to change pushrods, we had to come
up with a design that allowed installation and removal by just opening the pushrod covers. The new design
was such a cool idea that we made it available for Harley-Davidson® Evolution® big twin and Twin Cam
88® engines as well as 1986-’03 Sportster® models. No need to remove the gas tank or the rocker covers.
We call these pushrods Quickee’s. . . because they save time!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
Screw the threaded adjuster into the pushrod until the threads disengage and the adjuster simply slides up into the
pushrod body. That makes the pushrod assembly shorter, so installation and removal is a snap. Once the pushrod is
installed, pull the adjuster down and re-engage the threads to adjust the pushrod. Once the pushrod is adjusted, the
locknut positively prevents the adjuster from moving. That’s it! It’s a Quickee.
The ball ends of Quickee pushrods are drilled so that oil can flow through the pushrods to lubricate the top end. This is
compatible with the stock oiling system for 1984-up big twins and 1986-up Sportster models. This oiling method is also
used in S&S SH-Series and P-Series vintage engines. S&S also offers a Hydraulic Tappet Conversion kit for shovel engines,
which features Quickee pushrods, billet tappet guides, late style tappets, and S&S roller rocker arms.
The only exception to the top end oiling thing is a special set of Quickee’s for use with stock shovelhead rocker arms. That
set does not have drilled ball ends since stock shovel rockers cannot be oiled through the pushrods.
NOTES:
•• S&S Quickee pushrods are designed for
use with 1984-up hydraulic tappets.
They are not compatible with stock
or aftermarket hydraulic tappets for
shovelhead engines or most solid
style tappets.
••
•• 1984-’99 style pushrod covers are
required for access to the Quickee
Pushrod adjusters in 1999-up big
twins. There is a convenient kit (1066051) for Harley-Davidson® Twin Cam
88® and Twin Cam 96™ engines that
contains the pushrods, tappet cover
gaskets, and a set of pushrod covers
(see below). That makes it easy to do
a Quickee.
When a Quickee is collapsed, it can easily be installed or removed from an assembled engine.

Make The Most Of That Displacement!
Increasing displacement is one of the most popular ways to get more power, but displacement alone is not enough.
To make the most of the extra cubic inches from the S&S top end kits, we recommend high performance intake,
exhaust, and camshafts also be installed. Often, these performance upgrades are already in place by the time a rider
installs a big bore kit, but if not, we strongly suggest that you install them at the same time, to allow the engine to
achieve its full potential.
These dyno charts show how much can be gained with the big bore top end, cams, air cleaner, and exhaust.
This dyno chart shows the increases in torque
and horsepower available from a 106" Top
End Big Bore Kit. In stock trim, the 2007
Harley-Davidson® FLSTF made a respectable
65 horsepower and 85 ft/lb of torque at the
stock displacement of 96". The same bike with
the 106" Top End Big Bore Kit, S&S 585 cams,
and S&S mufflers made 98 horsepower and
an incredible 110 ft/lb of torque.
All that power without spitting the cases!
This dyno chart shows a before and after on a
2006 Harley-Davidson® FLHR. The stock 88"
engine made 64.6 horsepower and 74.3 ft/lb
of torque. After the installation of a 97" Top
End Big Bore Kit, an S&S teardrop air cleaner,
and S&S exhaust, two sets of cams were run
to show how the engine can be tailored for
the type of riding you do. The 551 cams make
this a torquey engine, perfect for touring and
city driving. The 585 cams make a little less
torque, but provide lots more top end power
and more usable rpm range.

CNC PORTED CYLINDER HEADS
LET S&S® CNC PORT
An Economical way to get
a substantial horsepower increase
while maintaining a stock Appearance.
S&S has developed high flowing intake port, exhaust port, and combustion chamber
shapes for stock cylinder heads. S&S then digitally reproduces them in a stock head
casting with our 5 axis CNC machining centers. After CNC porting, heads are assembled
with new one-piece, forged racing grade stainless steel alloy, valves, valve guides and
high performance, conical single coil high silicon alloy valve springs.
This photo shows the S&S CNC machined
intake port before the valve guide is
installed. Notice the raised vane ahead
of the valve guide hole. The purpose of
this vane is to split the air stream ahead
of the valve guide to reduce turbulence
and increase flow.

cams, the stock 50mm throttle body, and S&S
teardrop air cleaner. Great torque for touring
applications. The red curves show the S&S
585 cams with a 58mm throttle body. This
combination produces slightly less low and
midrange torque, but significantly increases
usable rpm and top end horsepower. A
good choice for lighter bikes and racing
applications. Both engines were tuned with
Harley-Davidson® Race Tuner.
Notes:
• Only cylinder heads that are in good condition and have “like new” appearance, may be
exchanged. Heads with superficial damage, peeling or discolored paint, or other cosmetic
alterations are not acceptable for exchange, but may be reworked. Rework will take slightly
longer than exchange service. Customer will be contacted to review options if heads do not
pass inspection.
• CNC porting is not available for previously ported heads, heads that have been structurally
damaged, or heads that are determined to be unserviceable during initial inspection. These heads
will be returned to the customer without modification. In these cases customer will be notified and
options reviewed. New, CNC ported stock heads or S&S heads are available for purchase.
• Due to variations in stock cylinder head castings, all inside surfaces of the ports may not
“clean up” during machining. As a result, the inside of one or more ports may not appear to be
completely machined. This does not effect performance and is not considered a defect.
• CNC porting is not currently available for Harley-Davidson® CVO engines.
