Undercover Beth Kephart Elisa is a poet and uses her talent to help boys at her school by secretly writing poems to their girlfriends. It’s a great scheme (and very lucrative!) until Elisa’s crush asks her to write a love poem... for another girl. At first, Jock thinks it will be an easy summer with golf cart races and not much else. However, as he is rubbing sunscreen on his grandpa’s back and worrying about the inevitable buy-out of the course, Jock realizes he might not survive the summer... unless he enlists the help of his kooky family. CWRC SUMMER READING LIST 2013 Mystery and Suspense The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie Jaclyn Moriarty Bindy is the smartest girl at her Australian high school. She likes to give her teachers notes on their lectures and corrects her classmates’ grammar. Bindy is indignant when she is forced to take a new class called Friendship and Development. Why would she need that? As she gains some self-awareness in this class, though, she also gets the feeling that she is slowly being murdered. She fails a test for the first time ever and can’t stop feeling sleepy. What is going on? Who would want to get rid of her? Or, maybe a better question to ask, who wouldn’t? The narrative is sprinkled with emails, diaries, phone calls, and other formats which help tell the tale and solve the mystery. Cooney If Mitty Blake spent as much time doing homework as he does avoiding homework, then he would be at the top of his class. For his science project, Mitty finds an old envelope with scabs in them and decides that will be sufficient for his project. Little does he know, this envelope contains smallpox scabs, and he may have just exposed the entirety of New York City. This book is fast-paced, suspenseful, and a fun read for anyone who isn’t a germaphobe! Strike Three You’re Dead Josh Berk Lenny wins the chance of a lifetime. He gets to be a game announcer for his beloved Phillies. The day of the big game is also the debut of a rookie pitcher who is supposed to have great stuff. However, he drops dead on the mound, and Lenny does not get a chance to call the game. Instead, he makes it his mission to figure out what happened to the rookie and enlists his two best pals, his librarian, and a fangirl, into helping him solve the mystery. A great mystery that is also incredibly funny! CWRC SUMMER READING LIST 2013 Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror The Gardener S.A. Giannine gets hooked up to the game and is given a task: she must survive in the game world for three days. If she dies in the game, she has to start over from the very beginning. Dragons, sheep, and killer statues are only some of the characters she will have to defeat. Will this birthday gift cost Giannine her life? “These are the secrets I have kept. The one who saved me... and the one who cursed me.” This is the first book in the four-title Monstrumologist series. It is a gory tale describing what it is like to be an assistant for the town monster expert: the monstrumologist. Get ready to be horrified and spellbound by this novel. Beware: there are lots of scenes of dissection and gross, graphic descriptions. The Skinjacker Trilogy Neal Shusterman This trilogy follows children and teenagers that, instead of dying, live in a limbo state in a place called Everlost. It opens with Allie and Nick, new to the limbo world, figuring out how to navigate and survive through chocolate ogres and children gangs. Power struggles, romance, humor, and adventure make this trilogy a must-read! Ship Breaker Paolo Bacigalupi On the post-apocalyptic Gulf Coast, young Nailer’s survival is dependent on gathering enough copper wire each day for the crew boss. When a giant hurricane hits, Nailer’s luck changes. He is washed up by an untouched clipper ship with food and treasure galore. Nailer finds a girl on board as well, which complicates matters as he decides on his next course of action . Can he trust her? What lies beyond the Gulf? What does the future hold for Nailer? This book mixes action and science fiction together into a unique story that is darker and more violent than other titles on the list. The Amaranth Enchantment Julie Berry When Lucinda was a young girl, her parents left for a royal ball and never returned. Ever since, Lucinda has been stuck in servitude at her evil aunt’s store.
