A newsletter for the students, families and friends of River Rock
Graduates Thank Impact Award Recipients
Moms, dads, brothers, grandparents, aunts, teachers and counselors were
among some of those honored at River Rock Academy’s graduation ceremonies.
What has become the highlight of the celebration, this year’s Impact Awards
presentation was emotional and heartfelt.
Earlier in the school year, the seniors worked hard at developing a speech that
would honor a person who has made a big difference in their life. Graduates shared
words expressing the gratefulness and love they have for those who never gave up
on them and encouraged them through the difficult times. Award recipients
received engraved plaques to remember this special honor.
Fifteen graduates from the Carlisle, Newville, Shiremanstown and West Perry
Campus locations participated in the River Rock ceremonies on June 1st in
Mechanicsburg and 26 seniors from Day Treatment, Hellam, Red Lion and Spring
Grove Campus locations participated on June 8th in Red Lion.
Patti Shatto-Young spoke about River Rock’s commitment to serving and
shared some of the community partnerships and meaningful relationships that
developed over the school year with organizations such as food banks, nursing
homes, animal shelters, non-profit groups and much more.
Representatives from the various school districts along with Campus Directors
and Counselors joined the graduates on the stage where they were presented their
diplomas and River Rock certificates along with many handshakes and hugs of
congratulations.
Senior Luis Correa from the Carlisle Campus was honored for achieving
perfect attendance during the school year. Josh Leppo from the Spring Grove
Campus received the same honor and also delivered a special presentation inspiring
others to make the most of their life and move forward from mistakes. “Look at
where you stand today and tell yourself what you have to do tomorrow to better
yourself. Use what you learn at River Rock Academy and other educational
institutions and take that knowledge toward becoming a better person,” Josh
shared.
In addition to inspiring music performed by vocalist Toni Phillips and an
entertaining video that took a trip down memory lane, Steve Capoferri honored
staff members who achieved perfect attendance and they were presented with an
engraved award. Those staff members and their guests also celebrated at a special
dinner on June 4th in Hershey.

The staff members who achieved perfect attendance for the school year are
Andre Anderson, Tony Brady, Mollie Currie, Brad Gilmore, Becky Grim, Kim
Hailey, Nate Holmes, James Koser, Joe O’Toole, Amy Robinson, Troy Snyder
and John Tantala. Kip Aldinger, Kari Cover, Bob Dorwart, Jon Fritz, Donna
Gano, Charlie Jacobs, Tracy McClintock and Jordan Rickert had perfect
attendance for two years in a row and Kevin Deane and Jennifer Long achieved
perfect attendance for three years in a row. Although directors are not eligible
for this award, Brian Link, Hellam Campus Director, was publicly recognized at
graduation for his five years of perfect attendance.
Graduation is always a special time and a great opportunity to reflect on the
hard work of our students and staff as well as the importance of support
received from the school districts, families and others who give of their time to
help guide the seniors toward earning their high school diplomas. It is very
rewarding to see just how much River Rock’s mission of providing our students
with the power to change, effect and improve their lives comes to life at the
graduation celebration.

Honoring Heroes
On Saturday, April 16th, River Rock Academy Hellam Campus students John
Hammond, Seth McKee, LeTeasha Moats, Gary Snavely and Chance Strickler along with
Behavior Manager Karl Munscher took part in a special ceremony that enabled them to
see firsthand the sacrifice that soldiers and their families make for our country. They
participated in the Re-creation of the War Flag Memorial Ceremony at York’s historic
Prospect Hill Cemetery.
The students and Mr. Munscher joined veterans, family members and other volunteers
by placing flags on the hillside of the cemetery. Representing the latest casualties in
Afghanistan, 1,531 American flags and 271 Pennsylvania state flags were positioned in
honor of each fallen hero.
Following this portion of the day, the Patriot Guard Riders, a group of motorcyclists
who ride together to funeral services across the country, led family and friends to a
ceremony in honor of local fallen hero Army Staff Sergeant Adam L. Dickmyer. A special
banner honoring his memory was unveiled and Jack Sommer, Director of the Prospect
Hill Cemetery, spoke about the sacrifice that Sergeant Dickmyer and his family made.
Born in York, Sergeant Dickmyer was killed in Afghanistan last October. He was a
decorated soldier having received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service
Medal, Army Commendation Medal and many other honors.
All of the students who participated expressed that they felt part of something very
special and meaningful. LeTeasha said, “Every time I pass by I will remember putting up
the flags and Sergeant Dickmyer’s ceremony.”

Debate Teams
Compete
Immigration rights for illegal
aliens, abortion and whether or not to
release the controversial photograph
of Osama Bin Laden after he was
killed were the topics of the Debate
Team competition held between the
Carlisle, Newville, Shiremanstown
and West Perry Campuses in May.
All students were given their
assigned topics for the initial round
two weeks prior to the event.
Knowing they would be judged on
their professional demeanor, content
of presentation, volume/diction/rate
of speech, ability to refute facts or
opinion and knowledge base of the
issue, the students worked hard to
prepare.
Staff members Andrew
Alosi, Kari Cover, James Koser and
Joe O’Toole guided the students
through the preparation process.
As the debates began, each team
delivered an opening statement,
followed by eight minutes of free-forall discussion and a closing statement.
The round one competition on the
topic of immigration rights for illegal
aliens between Carlisle students
Patrick McCarthy, Tyler Morris and
Gary Thomas and Shiremanstown
students Adaam Ben Ezra, Mariah
Kroh-Pulcher and Tasha WicksForman was won by Carlisle.
In round two, Selina Miller,
Jacob Shank and Kraig Wiser from
Newville debated the topic of
abortion against Eric Garvey, Tyler
Mumper and Becca Templin from
West Perry. Newville was victorious
which qualified them to advance to
the final round against Carlisle.
Judged by River Rock Academy
staff Kara Alosi, Joe O’Toole and
John Tantala as well as Erin Bishop
from NHS, the Carlisle and Newville
students both did an excellent job.
With a final round score of 86 out of
100 points, the victory went to the
Carlisle team.
Congratulations to all of the
participants who are commended for
going the extra mile and working
hard for the debate competition.

Anderson Lands
Carlisle Coaching Job
Andre Anderson has been named
Head Varsity Basketball Coach at his
alma mater, Carlisle High School.
Mr. Anderson, a Behavior Manager
and Counselor at the River Rock
Academy Carlisle Campus, says the
goal of this coaching position is
something he wanted to achieve
since he graduated from college.
When the chance arose, he pursued
it. “I went for it and I’m excited for
the opportunity,” said Mr. Anderson.
After four successful years as a
standout guard at the University of
Vermont, Mr. Anderson began his
coaching career as the Assistant
Varsity and Head Junior Varsity
Coach at Carlisle from 2003—2007.
He returned to coaching in 2009 as
the Cumberland Valley Assistant
Varsity Coach. Mr. Anderson took
the following year off when his
daughter was born but when the
Carlisle job became available, his
supportive parents and wife
encouraged him to apply.
“I am confident that Andre will
do an excellent job for the Carlisle
basketball program. In addition to
being a talented athlete and coach,
Andre is an excellent role model and
he relates very well to teenagers on
so many levels,” said River Rock
CEO Steve Capoferri.
Congratulations to Mr.
Anderson! We wish him and the
Carlisle basketball team much
success in the upcoming season.

No Excuses Attitude
Many of us are familiar with the famous Nike slogan ‘Just Do It’ but how
many of us live out that challenge. Often times we make excuses, take an easier
path or expect success without hard work.
Several years ago, Troy Sunderland, Shiremanstown Campus Behavior
Manager and former Head Wrestling Coach at Penn State University, met an
individual who gave 100% effort to achieve and succeed despite the challenges
he faced. Mr. Sunderland recently invited this incredible individual, Rohan
Murphy, to Shiremanstown where he spoke with their students as well as others
who came from neighboring campuses to be inspired.
Rohan was born with severe birth defects and doctors had to amputate both
of his legs. As a kid he said it was sad not to be able to ride a bike or play
sports like the other kids. That all changed when he was a teenager and a coach
went out of his way to encourage Rohan to try wrestling. By training hard,
dedicating himself and not giving up when he had losses along the way, Rohan
became successful. “I decided to embrace the challenges in my life because I
knew anything was possible if I worked hard at it,” he shared.
Explaining that with half the body he needed twice the strength, Rohan
conditioned and trained harder than anyone else. He knew what he wanted out
of life and he wants to motivate others to succeed. “You have a choice. Do you
want to be average, good or great? You only deserve what you earn because
nothing that matters in life is handed to you for free,” Rohan challenged.
Rohan worked hard academically too and was accepted to Penn State
University after high school. During his sophomore year he got the itch to
wrestle again so he set up a meeting with Coach Sunderland but did not
mention that he didn’t have legs. Initially Coach thought he wanted to be a
manager or help out with the team in some other way. Rohan not only told him
what he wanted but he showed him by taking Coach Sunderland down to the
ground right in his office.
By proving himself on the mat, Rohan became part of the wrestling team
and showed everyone he would go the extra mile. “He always worked hard and
was such a motivation for everyone. I always liked how he never complained
and didn’t take being part of the team for granted,” Mr. Sunderland said.
As part of the their pre-season practice, the wrestling team climbed the
stairs at Beaver Stadium and ran up the mountain. Rohan stuck to his ‘No
Excuses’ motto for these challenges. Mr. Sunderland remembers, “He clawed
with his hands and pushed himself up the mountain. It still gives me chills
thinking about it.”
Rohan wowed the students by demonstrating some of his abilities including
pyramid of ten push-ups and how he takes down his opponents. At the age of
27, Rohan is training for the Paralympics and
traveling the country as a motivational speaker
at colleges and businesses. He was recently
highlighted on ABC’s 20/20 television show.
Not surprisingly, Nike did recognize his ability
to ‘Just Do It’ and they flew him to California
where he was filmed in a commercial for their
‘No Excuses’ campaign.
Rohan closed his program by telling the
students something that surprised them. He
feels lucky not to have legs. He said, “Being
disabled is a gift that I can use to inspire and
motivate others to help them get the most out of
life.”

‘The Hot Gator’ Wins
River Rock Race a Success
The Spring Grove Campus
hosted a smoking hot end-of-theyear event with some friendly competition. A fun Chili Cook-Off was
held between the Day Treatment,
Red Lion and Spring Grove Campuses on June 2nd.
Each team brought all of their
ingredients and supplies needed to
create their recipe. Ten River Rock
staff members served as judges and
cooks Lonell Allen and Jeramie Figlioli from Day Treatment claimed
victory. They creatively titled their
chili ‘The Caiman Caliente’ which
translates to ‘The Hot Gator.” Students Edwin Patino, Douglas Scott
and Akwame Anderson assisted
Lonnell and Jeramie.
Other students who participated
in the Cook Off were Paige Bechtel
and Brittany Pyles from Spring
Grove and Luke Bowman, Brian
Freeman, Quintin Hudson, Jason
Lighty, Zachary Matthew and Jacob
Windon-Druck from Red Lion.
Students had the opportunity to
play games and enjoy the day together. Congratulations to the Day
Treatment team and great job to all
students who participated in the
Chili Cook Off!
When River Rock decided to take on the challenge of putting together a 5K
race to benefit a local non-profit organization, the goal was to register 100 runners and raise $5000. That goal was far surpassed on April 2nd when 300 runners participated and over $10,500 dollars was raised.
The River Rock Reaches Out 5K and Fun Run held at John Rudy Park donated 100% of the money raised through race registrations and sponsorships to
Olivia’s House, a grief and loss center for children that provides no-cost services to families in York County and the surrounding communities.
The overall 5K male and female race champions were Caleb Gatchell and
Kari Cover. First, second and third place prizes were also awarded in 8 different age categories. Additional race results can be found at riverrockacademy.net on the home page under the “River Rock Reaches Out 5K Results” link.
In addition to the 5K, 75 children had a great time taking part in the ½ mile
Fun Run where each participant had a medal placed around his or her neck after crossing the finish line.
Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this event a success including
Trout, Erbersole & Groff, Utility Keystone Trailer Sales, IB Abel Inc., Metro
Bank, Mugsy’s Repairs, Road ID, Book Ends, E.K. McConkey & Co. Inc., Kegel, Kelin Almy & Grimme, LLP, NHS Autism School, River Rock Academy
Carlisle Campus, Rob Reinhart, Royal Farm Stores, Telecom Business Solutions, Big Apple Bagels and Brian Goss.
Race coordinator and Carlisle Campus counselor Jennifer Long organized
the event along with committee members Matt Macaluso, Red Lion Campus
Behavior Manager and Jordan Rickert, Spring Grove Campus Counselor.
Many other River Rock staff members and students volunteered at the race or
participated in the run. Ms. Long was thrilled with the turnout and results. She
shared, “The day’s events were a success for many families within the York
community and River Rock family as well as Olivia's House. Thank you to all
volunteers, race committee members and participants for a strong 1st annual
River Rock 5K. See you next year!”
