t the end of Mar, I had the pleasure of being at
the LGBTI Hustings, which saw leaders of the
five major political parties in Scotland come together to discuss politics with a queer bent. Hosted
by Stonewall Scotland, the Equality Network, LGBT
Youth Scotland and the Scottish Transgender Alliance
the event was something I never thought I’d see - the
leaders of a country being held accountable by our
community directly, on our terms. Subjects discussed
were inclusive education, funding for Sandyford Clinic
and plans for legal recognition of Intersex people during the next Parliament. Few among us knew that just
a couple of days later Kezia Dugdale who was in attendance would come out as being in a relationship with
a woman. Officially this gives us the most LGBTI government body in the world. Including UKIP (the sun’s
shining, so I’m feeling generous), four of the six main
parties in Scotland are led by LGB people (I look forward to the day we get to add T to that as well). Yes,
there was a random radgie shouting unintelligible
abuse from outside that sent a ripple of unease
through the audience and the moment between Ruth
Davidson and presenter Louise White where suddenly
it all got awkward (like the realisation a fight just broke
out with any idea of how it started), though generally
it was a lovely event and quite a milestone.
One subject that was hinted at by Kezia but wasn’t
covered due to time constraints was the recent decision by NHS England to not pursue the introduction
of PrEP on the National Health. Subsequently Nicola
Sturgeon has reassured that Scotland will determine
its own policy and this month NHS England have announced they “will carefully consider its position on
commissioning PrEP”. The estimate is that for every
day that PrEP is not available seven MSM (Men who
have Sex with Men) will be diagnosed as HIV Positive.
I read a haunting article the other day relating to a
Robert Maplethorpe exhibition and lamenting the lives
lost to AIDS, the cultural loss of the artists, visionaries
and the contribution they would have made. Where
are the elders who should have been here to guide and
inspire this generation?
Haydn Pope
Haydn Pope, owner of AXM in Glasgow, sadly passed
away last month after a long battle with cancer at the
age of 49. AXM will continue to operate but all profits
will go to the Moni Malawi charity which supports vulnerable children in Africa. Before his death Haydn had
raised over £300,000 for his favourite cause. Another
prominent member of the community, Martin Glancy,
known to many as DJ Bunny of Habana has also died
this month. His energy and humour will be deeply
missed.

NUS Scotland LGBT+ Conference
In this digital age, more and more phone apps are coming
to the market and also into our social awareness. Alongside other gay dating apps, a new service is being
launched called POZ (Pozitive Connections), for people
who are HIV-positive and looking for love. Founder Andrew Goyvaerts was diagnosed in 2013 and like so many
others has faced stigma and rejection over his status.
POZ seeks to provide an opportunity for people to meet
and date, as well as additional functions relating to health
services. It’s available to download via Apple and Android
stores. The Sexual Advice Association has also launched a
new app called SMART, which will give comprehensive
advice on a range of sexual health issues for men and
women. I’ve asked them whether there is anything specific for MSM, gay women and Trans sexual health needs.
It would be such a shame if it were about as useful and inclusive as an early-90’s sex education video. We’ll see.
On a lighter note, Pride Youth Games + is to be held 5th7th Aug at Stirling University. For more information or to
register, visit leapsports.org. The Games are a UK wide
event for LGBTI young people aged 16-25 and options this
year will include swimming, tennis, roller derby and
kayaking. When are we having a Bear Games? Snacking
relays, Box Set Marathons and Woofing Contests? Synchronised Snoring? Sign me up for that! Gold medal
(made of chocolate preferably).
If you’re looking for culture this month, Balletboyz are
touring the UK and bring their brand of insane hotness to
the King’s Theatre Edinburgh on 22nd May, then Dundee
Rep 23rd-24th May. Failing that, hold on until Jul cause
we’ve got the Ab Fab movie to look forward to. Two
months to go! At the rate we’re losing celebrities this year
(Victoria Wood and Prince in the space of a couple of days)
we’d better form a protective circle around June Whitfield
quickly!

into the evenings which
means summer is on its way
and hopefully we can enjoy some warm
sunshine which will make a nice change
from the cold conditions we have had of
late. However whether its daylight or not
there is much going on in our scene with
a plethora of options available so let’s
get to it and round up the comings and

Starting with some very sad news from
Habana, venue DJ original, DJ Bunny aka
Martin Glancy has passed away at the
tragically young age of just 33. Martin
was a much loved member of the Habana team and indeed the LGBT scene
performing regularly across the scene
venues and for Pride as well as many a
charity fundraiser. Martin’s other passion
was football and especially Hibernian FC
for which he was the sports broadcaster
for Hibs TV offering his commentary to
some of the biggest matches for the
team from Easter Road. Everyone at
ScotsGay sends our love and thoughts to
Martin’s family, friends and the entire
Team Habana during this painful time,
and for me personally thank you Martin
for the little chats we shared and your inspiring nature: you will be so sorely
missed. Farewell Beautiful Dreamer.

estled in Dundee’s rapidly transforming city centre, NHS Tayside’s innovative clinical sexual
health service “Men Only Tayside” has
been working closely with the local community to provide high quality care and
services out of a refurbished church. The
service exists, working locally, to raise
awareness of STI’s, screening and treatment of STI’s and to provide sexual
healthcare advice for men who have sex
with men (MSM) and men who have sex
with men and women (MSMW).
Men Only Tayside was developed
through a comprehensive local consultation project undertaken by the Terrence
Higgins Trust, which led to the distinctive
branding and the volunteer led peer to
peer health education scheme, in which
members of the community informally
greet and discuss issues with users of the
service. Other issues which arose during
this process were hate crime reporting
and support for disabled MSM and
MSMW, so MOT responded by becoming a third party hate crime reporting
centre and also delivering tailored sup-
port for disabled service users. MSM and
MSMW across Tayside can also use the
service to have condoms, lubricants and
dental dams delivered to them discreetly
by post via their website.
The service also acts as an online resource, with an exhaustive description of
sexual practices with associated risks, information on other local supportive services, details on treatment and what STIs
are currently a risk in the Tayside region.
The vision of MOT is outlined by Terrance Higgins Trust as “... all MSM living
in Tayside are able to easily access individualised sexual healthcare and HIV
prevention interventions and support
services. These services are welcoming,
inclusive, responsive to local need.”
The service can be used at Carin Centre
in Dundee city centre on Thu nights from
4.30-7pm. To volunteer for the service, or

Apr saw another shift in the entertainment at Cheerz with Miss Tina Peachez
taking over Thu nights with the return of
the Kiki. This girl always brings her A
game when it comes to creativity and
she’s asking you to do the same. She
provides a theme for each week and asks
anyone who wants to perform to enter
their ideas into the mix. Once the best
and worst of the week have been decided a nail biting lip sync ensues to see
who the ultimate winner is! This is every

Coming up in Cheerz this month we have
the X Factor contestants Diva Fever and
2 Shoes and whilst I can’t comment on 2
Shoes (as I wasn’t in the country whilst
they were contestants), I can say that I
enjoyed Diva Fever’s numbers this year
on X Factor and so I will probably head
down to see the boys show us what
they’ve got!
The big news is that girl group Booty Luv
will be back in Cheerz on 27th May to
give us some of their top hits like Boogie
2nite and Shine. After the fabulous show
put on by Stooshe in Cheerz Nightclub,
the venue is becoming a great place to
hear live music, and also support local
talent. Speaking of local talent, will be
back with two shows in May! The first is
the Mad May Day Madness! When the
girls will be taking you from 6pm-1am
with games, and music galore, all hosted
by Mama Romy! What more could you
want?! And the divas will be back on the
29th with their monthly show, set to be
a treat for all the family (if they are over
the age of 18 anyway!).

would like to pay tribute to one of the
best musicians that ever lived. He was a
sexual god whose music constantly bordered on the erotic fantasies of man. I
am of course talking about Prince. His
iconic voice and legendary songs will
never be forgotten in my eyes and hopefully his death will lead to a resurgence
in his music so the new generation growing up without his influence can get a
touch of magic added to their lives. RIP
you hero, gone but never forgotten!

Art for Artsake
I
t’s been a busy month with a plethora
of productions on offer so let’s get to
those reviews and previews.
Jackie the Musical Review:
The magazine called Jackie came to life
in 1964 and ran for 30 years with the final
issue hitting the shelves in 1993. It defined a generation especially during its
peak in the 70’s a glossy mix of fashion,
make up, male celebrities and sharing
your worries with Cath and Claire the
magazine’s resident agony aunts (in reality a team of often male journalists
who answered the letters in rotation). All
of this came from the Offices of DC
Thomson in Dundee and so does this musical which started life three years ago at
Dundee’s Gardyne Theatre.
The rather weak story is of newly
divorced Jackie (played perfectly by
Janet Dibley) who whilst clearing out her
house ready for a house move uncovers
her collection of Jackie magazines and is
transported back to the 70’s and brought
face to face in her own mind with her
younger self (played by Daisy Steere).
She negotiates the emotional journey of
relationships and looks in her own heart
to discover what she really wants. As this
unfolds, the sub story of her son finding
love for the first time is played to comedy effect to the hilt by the charming
and gorgeous Michael Hamway as David.
The whole production is a wonderful excuse for a trawl through some of the
biggest hits of the 70’s from What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted to 20th
Century Boy and I Can See Clearly Now all
performed by an excellent on stage band
under the direction of Dan De Cruz.
With some laugh out loud moments and
choreography that’s evocative of the period, you can easily forgive the silliness
of the script and just get swept along
with the memories the music brings
back and makes it a worth night out.

Canned Laughter Review:
Edinburgh’s Panto Legends Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott are much
loved and respected for the efforts in
making the Kings Christmas Show the
best in the UK but they all come from a
rich heritage in the business that was
crafted from working across the Club circuits and the early 80’s Scottish theatre
scene.
For once, the threesome have decided to
get serious with a play that melds comedy, observation, pathos and drama together to stunning effect so much so
that the audience are left in awe of this
deeply different side of the three panto
greats.
Written by Ed Curtis and Allan Stewart
and telling the tale of Alec (Stewart), Gus
(Gray) and Rory (Stott) who worked the
UK club circuit in the 1970’s before Alex
and Gus are snapped up for the big time
with a Saturday night prime time TV
show leaving Rory to question what
could have been.
As the pressure builds and the limelight
fades, Gus and Alex separate and are
only brought back together in later life
thanks to Gus writing his life story.
This is a fascinating play that examines
a time long gone comedy and political
situation that now seems out of place
but was so normal back in the day. With
only Gus delivering the full emotional
impact of what his life journey has involved, it’s an engrossing and satisfying
evening of theatre.
This truly is a play that shows the breath
and range of not only Stewart as a writer
but as a performer delivering comedy
and drama in equal measure and the
same is true of Stott who finally arrives
and secure his place in the Theatre Acting business and should be justifiably
proud. However the true highlight is
Andy Gray who is quite simply one of the
finest Scottish actors to be working
today: his ability to go from laughter to
tears and the combination reaffirms the
belief that theatre brings out the best in
us all, let’s hope another tour of the play
is on the books soon.

The Rocky Horror Show Review:
It’s now over 40 years since Tim Curry
slipped on the stockings and suspenders
for the first time and writer Richard
O’Brien unleashed the legend that is the
Rocky Horror Show to the world and this
new touring production which follows
hot on the heels of the birthday celebrations at the Playhouse Theatre in London’s West End which featured the
return of O’Brien himself.
A debauched delight of a tribute to B
movies and a hot rocking band this is a
timeless show which when done well will
continue to delight audiences no matter
where and when. The same is somewhat
true of the latest version which again
takes the gamble that the audience is so
aware of the story they can cut the dialogue and power through the numbers
which leaves it feeling like a tribute to
the show rather than the Rocky Horror
Show itself.
That said, awesome performances from
Liam Tamne as Frank, Diana Vickers as
Janet, Ben Freeman as Brad, and Dominic
Andersen as Rocky along with the rest of
the cast (including a witty and fun Narrator in the form of Norman Pace), ensure all the boxes are ticked and the
audience leaves happy as ever and the
Rocky Horror Show rolls ever onwards
albeit in an edited format.
While you might not shiver in anticipation as much as in previous production
you can be rest assured you will be doing
the time warp again whether you’re in
stilettos or not.

Let It Be Review:
Touring the UK following another
lengthy stint in the West End, Let It Be
comes to Scotland, showcasing the hits
and legendary chart toppers of the
Beatles, utilising a wealth of film footage
to set the changing time period that was
the 60’s.
Starting from the Fab Four’s early days
as the decade opened through the sexual and political awakening of flower
power to that final concert atop the
Apple Building in London all the hits are
present and played well by the four piece
onstage Beatles replica who are joined
by a keyboard player for later hits to
replicate the orchestrations and brass
moments the Beatles developed in later
albums.
While what’s on stage is fun, this is really
a tribute concert and one which is already done so much better by the supe-

orchestra and leave, this production feeling weakened.
That all being said, Let It Be does what it
says on the tin and celebrates some of
the best pop music ever written. You
can’t help but sing along to Hey Jude as
the concert ends and be reminded just
how great the Beatles song book actually is - so it’s a job well done.

The 39 Steps Review:
The Fiery Angel and Tricycle London coproduction of The 39 Steps makes a stop
in Edinburgh and in effect brings the
show home to the famous landmark that
featured in the original Hitchcock move:
The Forth Bridge.
Using a cast of four and keep the running
time to ninety minutes, this is a comedy
take on a classic that for the most part
works as the four actors power their way
through dozens of characters. Merging
slapstick, shadow puppetry and clever
costume styling, this is a play which
transforms the serious story of man
wrongly accused of murder setting out
to prove his innocence taking him to the
wilds of the Highlands and back to London to finally reveal just what the 39
Steps are.
The cast work hard and mine the script
for every laugh possible, but it does take
a while to get used to a once serious John
Buchan script being transformed into
comedy but you can’t help but be swept
along with the humour and the rest of
the audience’s hearty laughter.
So for something a bit different and to
see a small cast working to extremes,
you can’t go far wrong with The 39 Steps.
Just don’t try to figure out what the
steps actually are too soon!

This was the first performance of
Rusalka by a Scottish company – the
only previous performances in Scotland
were in 1964’s Edinburgh Festival by the
national opera company from Prague: it
was well worth waiting for!
Rusalka, a water nymph, in love with the
human prince whom she has seen hunting in the woods, wants to become
human. Ignoring her father’s advice, she
asks the witch Ježibaba for a spell: trusting in the power of her love, she agrees
the price - she will become dumb and, if
rejected by her lover, will become an
outcast, forever trapped between earth
and water, while he will lose his immortal
soul. The prince is enchanted with her
and takes her to the palace in preparation for their wedding. Wedding guests
and palace servants are fearful of this
strange, silent woman: a Foreign
Princess decides she will have some fun
and sets out to lure the prince away from
his bride. The prince cannot resist the
challenge: Rusalka, broken-hearted, tells
her father, who curses the fickle prince.
Rusalka laments her estrangement from
her sisters and their watery world: she
asks Ježibaba for help, and is told that
she can return if she will kill the prince.
Rusalka, who still loves him, refuses. The
prince now comes searching for his mysterious beloved. She tells him that her
kiss will kill him: he begs her to release
him from his life of torment. Rusalka
kisses him and commends his soul to
god’s mercy: she sinks into her non-life
while her father laments her fate.
The production kept a delicate balance
between the real and the fantastical,
with a fairy-tale quality underpinning
subtle comments on the vagaries of
human nature. My one criticism is the
confusion of water nymphs with mermaids – the former do not usually have
tails - though I must commend Ms
Duprels on the management of hers.
Set, lighting and costumes were excellent, as were the ‘watery’ projections at
the start of the woodland acts. The chorus of dryads, huntsmen, palace servants
and wedding guests commented on and
underlined the principals’ basic human
tragedy - the painful discovery that the
longed-for beloved object, once attained, rarely brings the anticipated
bliss.
The singing was superb: the three
Singing Dryads and Julian Hubbard’s
Gamekeeper and Clare Presland’s
Kitchen Boy were a welcome and welljudged foil to the major tragedy; Natalya
Romaniw’s Foreign Princess smouldered
with the irresistible vitality that Rusalka,
with her watery nature, lacked: LeahMarian Jones’ Ježibaba was magnificently maleficent and uncaring. Peter
Wedd’s glorious outpourings of love to
both objects of the Prince’s desire underlined the weakness of his vacillation between them: Sir Willard White’s
performance as Rusalka’s father was a
joy: tenderly caring for his daughter, terrifying in his anger towards the fickle
prince. Anne Sophie Duprels’ Rusalka,
tiny and fragile, walking with such pain
on the unyielding earth, suffering in her
inability to express herself, vulnerable in
her love, and generous in her forgiveness, rightly received rapturous applause
at the final curtain.

Scottish Opera’s Connect Company auditions singers and orchestral musicians
aged 14 - 21, creating an impressively
talented group who perform with young
professional soloists. Karen MacIver’s
work, based on the 1920 silent film of the
same name, is their third world première
in eight years.
It’s 1901, and the carnival has come to
Glasgow Green: Francis, Jane, and their
friend Ellen are among the crowd enjoying the stalls, sideshows and quack doctors, when they encounter Dr Gallagher’s
tent. He presents the somnambulist Cesare who, in his sleep, can tell fortunes –
his prediction of Ellen’s death that night
shatters the holiday mood and disperses
the crowd. Ellen does die, and the police
interrogate Francis: he and Jane realise
they must investigate for themselves. In
the night, an attempt is made on Jane’s
life: she and Francis find their way to
Gartloch Asylum, where the Director, Dr
Caligari, is revealed as none other than
Dr Gallagher, whose murderous obsession has led him to use Cesare as his instrument of execution – or is he? Are
Jane and Francis themselves inmates of
Gartloch, and the whole story a figment
of their disordered minds?
Both chorus and orchestra were excellent, delivering an intricate and fascinating score, the perfect showcase for such
an unsettling tale. The chorus was a fine
blend of lively individual characters,
while many small cameos were delivered
with aplomb – Ellen, a newsvendor, and
the Matron and Wardress of the asylum
were particularly noticeable. There were
plenty of gorgeous musical moments –
Francis’ serenade after the fair; Cesar’s
unearthly voice and eldritch music; the
six black-cloaked, candle-bearing
mourners’ a capella lament; the doctor’s
diagnosis - “she felt the brush of the grim
reaper’s breath…she’s put away care”;
and the mad circus music and manic giggling as the asylum inmates whirled and
circled. Glen Cunningham’s Francis was
an ardent young lover: Daniel Keating
Roberts’ Cesare revealed a moving
awareness of, and distaste for, the acts
he was constrained to carry out. Sarah
Power’s Jane loved, was horrified about
Ellen’s death, and disintegrated superbly, while Andrew McTaggart’s ‘double act’ as Doctors Gallagher and Caligari
was unsettlingly ambivalent – homicidal
maniac, or respectable physician?
Another cracking performance from
Scottish Opera, deserving of the audience’s enthusiastic reception, and holding out great hope for the future of
opera in Scotland.

David McVicar’s sumptuous Tudor production showcases everything at which
the Met excels: set, costumes, chorus,
orchestra and principals combined in a
ravishing feast for the senses. Black and
gold set and costumes make a sombrely
glittering backdrop against which the
ageing Queen Elizabeth’s costumes
symbolise her power and glory, powerless to hold to her the last love of her life,
Robert Devereux, Earl of Leicester. He
now loves Sarah, married against her will
to his best friend the Duke of Nottingham. The intersecting love triangles
smoulder, blaze and ultimately bring
tragedy to all – Leicester beheaded;
Sarah heartbroken; Nottingham bereft
of both best friend and wife; the Queen
alone, friendless, heartbroken and ready
for death.
Sandra Radvanovsky’s magnificent Elizabeth, imperious, tender, hopeful, ardent, was vocally and dramatically
incomparable. Matthew Polenzani’s
conflicted and passionate Roberto Devereux showcased his fabulous bel canto
voice: Elina Garanča and Mariusz
Kwiecien completed the exquisitely luxury-cast quartet.

illions were shocked when
Robin Williams left this life as
his comedy made him seem
like one of their families for so long. His
last movie BOULEVARD (15) is not a fitting climax to an incredible career but
Williams lovers need to know about it.
He plays a diligent bank employee in a
marriage where they have separate bedrooms. The script has no explanation on
their past sex life. Driving one night he
almost knocks over an attractive prostitute, Leo, looking for clients and offers
him a lift. They end up in a motel room
together where Leo states: “Its $100 if
you blow me and $150 if I blow you.”
Robin befriends the young man which is
not easy as he is a drug addict being
beaten up by violent drug suppliers. As
Robin Williams was very wealthy only his
intimates would know his reasons for accepting this film. It is as if he has reverted
to Michael Caine’s values for although he
has the best looking wife in Britain he
seems to accept any movie to get out of
the house. Film stars have different motives for making their films. I’m told
Robert De Niro has an obsession for buying property in New York city which
could be why he has made terrible films
for more than a decade. With all we have

Shamin Sarif is a gay British lady who
wrote an impressive book that she has
now directed on film set in Moscow DESPITE THE FALLING SNOW (12a). I
avoid horror movies as knowing the
story of Russia since the revolution a
century ago when they murdered the
royal family is horrific enough for me.
The dictator Stalin murdered vast numbers of his own people and Putin is currently only a fraction less lethal sending
his troops and endless ammunition to
Ukraine when its people wanted independence. Miss Sarif knows how to build
tension in a world where you turn on
taps to muffle the sound of your voice in
case anyone is recording you. Whether
you are in favour or against the government it is a world I would be terrified to
live in, but a very attractive cast helps.
SING STREET (12a) is a musical about
Dublin teenagers getting a group together and rehearsing their songs. It is
constantly entertaining having a good
looking guy in the lead whose looks will
impress many in five years time and the
world in ten years.
FLORENCE FOSTER JENNINGS is a documentary
about a wealthy American
woman desperate to be a
classical soprano whose
out of tune voice became
a source of great amusement in the twenties and
thirties when she hired
concert halls to perform.
Meryl Streep plays her
with energy supported offstage by Hugh Grant.
As if people in France had
no idea this was coming
they have on release a
similar subject MARGUERITTE (12a). Here a
rich woman with similar
ambitions marries a baron
so she can be known as a
baroness and is convinced
the world wants to hear
her offkey voice. Both
films are amusing.
DVD WORLD
There just might be those amongst us
unaware the most spectacular TV variety
‘shows of the 70’s and 80s were from a
brilliant Scottish mind THE STANLEY
BAXTER COLLECTION now on 2 discs.
They cost so much in cast, costumes and
scenery that TV executives decided they
couldn’t continue. As they won many
awards the now 89 year old Stanley can
look back with pride as for decades he
was the most popular entertainer in
Britain.
The Network label is also worth seeing
for memorable nostalgia as they have a
series called BRITISH MUSICALS OF
THE THIRTIES and their volume 5 has
music you must hear by Ivor Novello in
the film version of his hit stage musical
GLAMOROUS NIGHT from 1936. There
are four titles on two discs and the craze
for big bands is shown in 1937 with LET’S
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT.
XENIA - in Greece means generous hospitality to strangers - has the 15 year old
gay Danny (part blond dyed with his own
hand) whose mother has died in Crete
seeking out his older unshaved hairy
chested brother, Ody, in Athens.Their father abandoned them twelve years before and they plan to track him down.
The writer/director starts it with imagination as Danny insists on taking his
white rabbit everywhere with him and
who could not love a teenager obsessed
with his rabbit.Brother Ody has a pleasing voice to win singing competitions
After some spirited Greek singing the
writer thinks it is a good idea when the
rabbit dies to have a lifesize rabbit appear in the boy’s imagination and he
starts aiming a gun at anyone who annoys him. It is one half of a promising
film imported by Peccadillo Pictures.
The couple who wrote the brilliant ARE
YOU BEING SERVED? TV series in the
70’s and 80’s followed it with GRACE
AND FAVOUR in the 90’s with the same
favourite personalities - John Inman and
Mollie Sugden - running a rural hotel. Eureka Entertainment has now brought it
out on DVD to please comedy lovers of
the past.

no memory of times in the sixties when

In recent years the British Film Institute
has commended his work and Peccadillo
Pictures have his documentary worth
seeing. Pioneers of male nudity had to
battle British law.
Mike Arlen’s swimwear shots on guys
were noticed by a German magazine editor in the latter 70’s who pleaded with
him for nudes on them Mike knew the
police had raided and confiscated the
stock of any photographer who had
taken nudes, but he dared to start which
brought the beginning of fifteen magazines called Mike Arlen’s Guys with
twenty models in each edition.
