MWHS Helps The
Homeless
By Kay Poeth
On November 19, Mr. Dietz (Technology Education) invited
two speakers to come into his classes to describe to students
their next project. The two speakers were Tammy Clinger and
Brenda Bowersox from the By Grace Transitional Home. Tammy and Brenda started the homeless shelter over a year ago, and
are now doing some new renovations to it; this is where Mr.
Dietz and his students come in to help with the framing. They
will be renovating in the Old Village Square, the part above the
Thrift Store. Tammy and Brenda hope to have fourteen additional rooms for women and children. The project is estimated
to cost around $285,000, but hopefully, with help from the community, donations, and lots of fundraising, Tammy and Brenda
hope to complete the renovations for approximately $50,000
and have the work completed by spring.
By Grace Transitional Home offers not only a shelter from
the elements, but also helps its residents get their lives back on
track. Five programs are offered to residents: Education, Employment, Housing, Prevention, and Life Skills. By Grace helps
those who did not graduate from high school get their GED.
Speakers, who specialize in employment, come in to assist the
jobless prepare applications, résumés, and help them to develop essential skills by providing them with employment in the
Thrift Store and with catering. With housing, residents learn
life skills, how to budget money, and what Tammy and Brenda
call the “Real Life Game.” The game basically has residents
pretend they are on their own, and prepares them to deal with
real life circumstances. By Grace also informs their residents
about protection against STDs, parenting skills, pregnancy, and
domestic violence. Lastly, By Grace teaches multiple life skills
including how to cook, house keep, grocery shop, and even how
to balance a checkbook.
When asked why they do what they do to help the homeless, Tammy, a foster mother to five, said she believes God has
given them the love for the community and foster children,
which makes her want to help those less fortunate. Brenda’s
response was that when she was still in school and had gotten pregnant, her parents were always there to help and support
her. If it weren’t for them, she wouldn’t have gotten through it.
Ultimately, both women want to do whatever they can to help
the community. When asked why Mr. Dietz wanted to be a part
of this project, he said that he has known Tammy through By
Grace works, and that he liked doing community- based things
with his students. Mr. Dietz loves the opportunity to serve and
help others.
Most factors of homelessness in the country include poverty,
lack of affordable housing, job loss, lack of health care, mental
illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports, “There are 633,782
people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the
US. 142,168 (22.1%) are children, 62,619 (13%) are veterans,
and 269,991 (42.6%) are disabled and unable to work.” It’s sad
knowing that people, including veterans, sleep in the elements
without a roof over their heads, yet it’s comforting to know that
there are people like Tammy and Brenda out there who are trying to help make the difference. As a community, we should
work together to help each other, not only to better our community, but also to feel better about ourselves, knowing we’ve
made a difference.
If you are interested in helping in your community or helping
By Grace Transitional Home meet its goal, call Tammy Clinger
at (570) 765-2086 and Brenda Bowersox at (570) 765-2293. For
