DEAR MEMBERS Industry WATCH
VOL. XXVI NO. 05
MAY 2011
DEAR MEMBERS
Colors can mean many
things. Red stands for danger and excitement; blue
is calm and serene, for
example. These are great
guides when it comes to
planning décor and atmosphere. But when it comes
to sports, color takes on an
entirely different role.
Lens color might not turn customers into athletic
superstars, but it can affect their performance and
comfort. The more you know about your patients’
sports activities, the better you can help them. You
might find that they need more than one set of
lenses that can accommodate different activities,
conditions, and times of day. In those cases, separate sunglasses or those with interchangeable
lenses are good options to recommend.
Patients might have personal color preferences
for other reasons as well, which is why lifestyle
questionnaires are particularly helpful. But the
more you know about your customers – and about
lens tints – the better you can help them learn
that going through the day wearing rose-colored
glasses might seem like a good idea for perking up
their mood, but it’s not necessarily the best choice
for improving their golf game.
Sincerely,
Michael Block
Industry
WATCH
Sports
Green lenses are another choice for keeping
colors fairly natural. They provide mild contrast and
are popular for playing baseball and golf.
Americans are buying sporting goods. Even when
they feel the pinch of the economy, people can’t
resist the pull of the game, or the call of the
open running or biking lane. In almost all sports
reviewed by the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), consumers are projected to have
spent more on sports equipment, clothing and
footwear in 2010 than they did in 2009. In comparison, those same numbers dropped between 2008
and 2009. In additional surveys, the NSGA found
that nearly four out of five Americans participate
in some sort of sport, recreation or fitness activity.
Brown, copper and dark amber lenses add contrast by blocking blue light and enhancing visual
acuity. Especially good at improving contrast on
grass and against bright blue skies, wearers like
them for baseball, cycling, fishing, golf, hunting,
skiing, and water sports.
In addition, the Outdoor Foundation reported
in their 2010 Outdoor Recreation Participation
Report that more than 137.8 million Americans
participated in outdoor recreation in 2009. This
number equates to nearly 50 percent of all Americans ages six and older.
Red, rose, and amber lenses block even more
blue light. They work well under sunny or partly
cloudy conditions, but affect color balance. People
who enjoy cycling, fishing and other water sports,
hunting, shooting, and skiing and other snow
sports enjoy wearing them.
Whatever the actual number of participants, and
despite the concern that we’re a country of too
many couch potatoes – and with overly high obesity rates – there are many consumers who head
outdoors to enjoy athletic activities. Those who still
cling to the TV room are often getting fitter through
Wii activities. The Wii adherents might not need as
much in the way of special optical sports products,
but even they should make sure their eyewear
is impact resistant. As for the others – whether
outdoors or getting their heart rates up in sports
facilities – they need to pay special attention to
the protection and comfort of the right eyewear.
Here are general guidelines to consider:
Gray lenses are neutral. They do not distort
color and they perform well in bright light. For that
reason, they’re popular and comfortable for many
wearers, and for many activities.
Yellow and orange lenses provide the strongest
blue-blocking effect, offering the greatest contrast
and sharpest focus. They are suitable for low-light
or hazy outdoor conditions and for indoor sports
such as basketball, handball, racquetball, and
tennis. Many hunters, cyclists, shooters, and snow
enthusiasts enjoy wearing them outdoors.
Keep in mind that there are additional considerations to take into account also. For tennis,
for example, the color of the ball and the court
are important. For fishing, whether the bottom is
sandy or grassy can impact the lens color being
considered.
Protection, Protection, Protection
According to Prevent Blindness America, the use
of appropriate sports eye protection can reduce the
risk of significant eye injury by at least 90 percent.
The same organization finds that 72 percent of
sports related eye injuries occur in people less
than 25 years old.
Young people, as well as sports participants of
every age, need to be aware that glass and plastic
lenses, open eyeguards (those without lenses),
and streetwear sunglasses do not offer protection
during sports activities.
Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses are the minimum
protection to recommend. And for especially active
sports, eyewear should meet American Society
for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.
Every Age, Every Sport
Prevent Blindness America reports that basketball,
baseball, water and racquet sports are responsible
for most eye injuries. A number of agencies and
laws are trying to limit those numbers. In New
Jersey, for example, a law requires that any child
who wears corrective glasses while participating
in racquetball, squash, tennis, women’s lacrosse,
basketball, women’s field hockey, badminton,
paddleball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, or softball
games sponsored by a school, community or
government agency must wear protective eyewear
that meets ASTM standards for safety frames and
ANSI standards for safety lenses. ASTM further
recommends that polycarbonate lenses should
be used if street eyewear is worn under protective eyewear.
For athletes of many ages, additional considerations come into play.
u Contact lenses can be a boon to athletes in
many sports.
u Shields and wrap style eyewear provide important comfort and protection against wind and dust.
u Interchangeable lenses offer a variety of color
and intensity options for different situations.
u Photochromic lenses simplify consumers’
routines by providing clear and sunglass comfort
in one lens.
u Polarized lenses reduce glare in numerous
settings.
u Special multifocal designs enhance vision for
specific sports activities.
Eyecare and eyewear professionals have the
products to help sports enthusiasts improve their
game and protect their eyes at the same time.
Those benefits are more valuable than investing
in new golf clubs or running shoes.

BEST IMAGE OPTICAL introduces colorful
additions to the Mario Galbatti collection. Each
model is sure to please every woman seeking to
jazz up, accessorize or complement her wardrobe,
at a price point that is sure to satisfy every discerning eyecare professional. Every model offers
a nearly indestructible nylon called “Grilamid
TR-90 LX.” Technically speaking Grilamid TR90 LX is a transparent and tough thermoplastic
engineering polyamide, which offers excellent
bending strength, stress crack resistance and a
high resistance to ultra violet light, which has been
known to fade colors in a lesser frame. It is also
low density so it is as light as a feather, as well as
having a high resistance to the chemicals which
are normally applied to the face such as makeup,
tanning lotion, moisturizers and more. Combine
these frames with the stainless steel frame front
and polycarbonate lenses you will have yourself
a virtually indestructible pair of glasses. Featured
below top to bottom are models MG124, MG135
and MG143. For more information please call 800688-7661 or visit www.bestimageoptical.com.

TODD ROGERS took a creative leap and
launched Todd Roger Eyewear in 2010. As
the founder of a successful optical shop in
Massachusetts, dispenser Rogers got his start in
the eyewear market while apprenticing to become
a licensed optician at a practice near Boston.
“I focused on bringing in designer lines and I used
to spend time in the basement creating my own
lens shapes in glass.” Once licensed, he set up
shop. “I saw the industry changing so rapidly and I
knew I needed to move to be the optician I wanted
to be” he says. “Plus, I love being in the thick of
things - sitting there and fitting people with great
eyewear.” His design inclinations began when
he started doing a lot of custom work. “I had a
friend who had done some frame design work
and I helped him out and went to a manufacturing
meeting where they said, ‘See this frame? What
do you think about it? What’s wrong with it?’ I
made some suggestions and then four months
later I am selling the frame.” For his own collection Rogers designs from the heart, but because
he is an optician, designs with practicality in mind.

LUXOTTICA introduces the Persol Roadster
Edition, dedicated to four-wheel heroes, to the
masters behind the wheel whose legendary efforts
opened endless horizons and showed the world
what it means to drive with style. It is a tribute to
the earliest drivers, to real gentlemen and epic
races that in the early 1900s kept the eyes of the
world glued to difficult and impervious racetracks
where the finish line was often a mirage. Passion,
emotion and tradition are values shared by both
Persol, created in 1917 in Turin, and Roadster,
the legendary sports car model that dominated the
racing world and appeared on the roads in the first
part of the 1900s. The Persol Roadster Edition features two sunglass models, each available in five
different color combinations. A collection strongly
inspired by the Roadster design for Persol, which
is historically linked to the world of design thanks
to its long tradition in Italian engineering since
1917. Since its inception, Persol has always been
synonymous with artistic expression, the result of
a special production process created entirely in
Italy and made up of manual ability, culture, passion and dedication. It takes a good thirty days
and between thirty-five and thirty-seven manual
steps to create a pair of Persol glasses and each
model undergoes careful and meticulous quality
control. Featured below are models PO3008S
and PO3009S. For more information please call

COSTA releases new sunglass style in time
for the outdoor season. There’s nothing like a
few warm days for spring fever to set in. Luckily, serious anglers and adventure junkies know
the remedy is to pack up and head out - outdoor
season is here. Just in time, Costa announces its
latest style, Tag. It features 360-degree co-molded
technology and bold construction, with built-in side
shields and durable integral hinges for a “forgetthey’re-on” fit. Tag comes in tortoise, black or silver
frame colors, in the full array of Costa’s patented
580™ lenses, including the new Rx option. The
580 lens blocks yellow light at the 580 nanometer
on the light spectrum - creating unparalleled visual
clarity, the highest levels of polarization efficiency
and razor sharp color enhancement. Like all Costa
sunglasses, Tag is hand assembled in Florida with
a lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defects
and can be customized with the frame and lens
color of choice. Tag derives its name in honor of
the many fish tagging programs happening now in
the name of conservation. Costa is an active supporter of initiatives like Bonefish Tarpon & Trust’s
Project Permit and The Billfish Foundation’s Tag
and Release effort, which seek to gather scientific
data regarding fish stocks and health. Tag retails
from $149 to $249 depending on lens choice. Rx
sunglasses prices will vary. For more information please visit www.costadelmar.com or call
800-447-3700.
