Meet Schedule
Pittsburgh Holiday Invitational
WOW! As Condors coaches this year we already received our gifts from you, the swimmers.
Though the weather outside has not been frightful, the swims inside have been oh so delightful.
We could not be more proud nor more excited about what has already been achieved as well as
what is still to come.
Hopefully, all of you are making plans for a truly memorable holiday season. There is no better
time to step back and take in all of the wonder of those around you and the amazing year that is
soon to become part of the record books. While we have our own families, be assured that our
memories and source of joy this season comes from all of you and the Condors. It is special to be
part of this organization and we are very thankful to be able to share in this journey with all of
you.
The Pittsburgh meet this coming weekend will top off our first half of this short course season and
we feel that the Condors are poised for best performances across the board. It is always exciting
to come together as a team and work towards a common goal. We expect that energies will be at
an all-time high and swimmers will be pushing themselves as well as cheering for others as we
bond together as CONDORS.

swimmer profiles and motivational quotes have been received. We have over 400 swimmers, so
please understand that this is a bit disheartening. If you would like to make Coach Dorsey’s |
Christmas this year, please send him a spotlight and a motivational quote.

condors achieve bronze medal status
Today USA Swimming announced the recognized clubs in the Club Excellence
Program. The Condors Swim Club has been awarded a bronze medal for 2016
with a score of 5,230 points. The Club Excellence program identifies clubs that
execute strong, well rounded programs to produce elite 18-and-under athletes.
Congratulations to all as this is truly a full team recognition!
PHOTOS PAGE
We have added a photos page
too the web site and ask that
all swimmers and parents
send pictures to Coach Dorsey
so that this page can be
totally filled with memories.
A vision
Swimmer spotlight
It came from across the pool,
A smile mimicking a low moon
Glistening amongst the ripples
Of another perfect performance.
A meet that will forever be
A big part of our swimming history.
It began as a roller-coaster climb
Click! Click! Click! Up to the top
Chilled with an aimed anxiety
Can this be the season for me?
Months in while the weather changed
Stay true to what coach has planned.
Together we can be so strong
Like a family that builds upon
The time that they spend together,
And the lessons that last forever
Meet after meet it started to show
That hard work truly does pay off.
With shoulders and sinews full of ache
Another cut down, but many more to make.
Now the holidays are once up us again
Which marks this season’s half way point.
And as one sits and envisions the big swims
It is the positive mentality that always wins.
So close your eyes and begin to see
The best swimmer you can possibly be.
For no gifts during Chanukah
Or Presents under the tree
Are as precious as that moment
When a vision becomes reality

last years holiday cheer
‘Twas the night before Pittsburgh, when all through the pool
Not a Condor was swimming, not even Kevin Gu;
Swim bags were packed by the bedside with care,
In hopes that Mr. Taper soon would be there:
The swimmers were nestled all snug in their beds:
While visions of finals raced in their heads:
And Gracie in her goggles, and Franny in her cap,
We all finally settled for a long winter’s nap,
When out in the street there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from our beds to see what was the matter.
Away to the window we flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains to get a view of this crash.
The moon glistened on the beautifully falling snow,
Making it difficult to discern what was happening below,
When what to our wondering eyes did appear,
but a broken old bus and eight coaches in gear,
With a jolly driver screaming for all to swim,
We thought for a moment it must be St. Jim.
More rapid than Condors his courses they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
“Now, Dorsey! Now, Theo!, Now Don and Will Guy!
On, Christina! On, Andrew! On Jon and Furey!
To the top of the blocks! and first to the wall!
Now swim fast! Swim fast! Swim fast all!
As quickly as you can kick under water fly,
Tighten those streamlines and shoot for the sky.
The next morn to Pittsburgh the bus chugged along
With fire in our bellies and our minds strong—
A couple movies and a stop for a bite,
it’s hard to believe the meet starts tonight.
Then all of a sudden we were at the pool
And though we had butterflies we still looked cool.
After our warm-up we all gathered together
Pledging that this weekend, we swim for each other,
A motivational speech by the coaches in blue,
And all of the swimmers knew what they had to do.
A raucous Condors cheer then back to the stands,
Every one of us clapping and shaking hands.
When back in the bleachers what do we hear,
But a joyful melody ringing in good cheer;
For it was Jolly St. Jim with a message at last—
“Happy Holidays to all, and be sure to swim Fast!”
On October 29th through November 1st, Kevin Gu and
Coach Jim attended the National Select Camp at the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs. Kevin was selected for
having one of the top 6 IMX scores in the Country for 15-16
year old males and only 34 male athletes attended the camp.
On Deck the practices were lead by 3 times former Olympian
and Gold Medalist, Brendan Hansen. The USA Swimming National team was training at the OTC at the same time and contributed to the camp with some motivation talks by athletes
Michael Phelps and Allison Schmidt.
Coach Jim and Kevin also spent most of their days in the
classroom learning from top collegiate coaches and OTC staff.
Former Michigan Women’s Head Coach, Jim Richardson spoke
about “the growth mindset” and “grit”. Former World Record
Holder and University of Alabama presented his experiences
as a swimmer and coach and the improvements in training in
his 40 years of competitive swimming. Other presentations
were video study of top Olympic athletes, drug and supplement education, and post race recovery.
Overall, the most exciting part of was the friendships that
Kevin made with swimmers across the country. Kevin saw
many of his new friends at the Speedo Junior Championships
this past week where he made the B Final of the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:00.80.
