Teddy Bear Toss Rings in the Holiday Season
Thanksgiving is the official start to the Holiday Season, and for 11 years, the Condors have created their own way to get
the Holiday Season started off right, with Teddy Bear Toss.
The event is nearly as old as Condors hockey, having begun in 1999-2000, the team’s second season. Teddy Bear Toss
makes the event more than just a professional ice hockey game, it is an experience unlike other. With a stuffed animal-or sometimes more than one--in hand, fans enter the arena with the anticipation of being part of something bigger than
themselves. There’s a buzz in the air that at any moment the Condors can score their first goal, and everyone knows to “let
‘em fly.” That’s when it “rains” stuffed animals in the arena as the fans get fully involved throwing their bears--or other
animals--onto the ice.
The idea was borrowed from a similar event that took place at junior hockey rinks across Canada. Just like any new idea,
there’s no knowing how successful it will be and eventually become.
“We saw a video on it and it looked really cool, so we decided to give it a try during our second season,” said Condors
President Matthew Riley. “We picked the weekend after Thanksgiving, as that’s obviously a giving time of year so we
thought that was a nice tie in and might help give it some legs. We honestly didn’t know what to expect and probably
would have been pleased had a couple hundred bears been thrown. Much to our amazement, thousands of stuffed animals
were thrown on the ice that first year and it’s just grown from there.”
In the first year, an impressive 2,553 stuffed animals were thrown onto the ice, a massive total in some minor league cities,
but a modest total compared to what has been thrown in recent years. Over the past 10 years, Condors fans have launched
more 50,000 bears in the Teddy Bear Toss. Last season was the most successful Teddy Bear Toss, amounting to 7,614
stuffed animals tossed by 8,900 fans, the second largest crowd in Condors history.
“Since we first did it, most other minor league teams in the states do it now with varying degrees of success, but nowhere,
that we know of, is it received better than in Condorstown,” said Riley. “Typically it’s a capacity or near capacity crowd
for us so that’s a great feeling to know that more than 8,000 fans go home knowing that night only did they have a great
time at a Condors game but they also participated in something good for someone less fortunate.”
While the players are focused on the game, they’re definitely just as excited about the game as the fans.
“It’s a pretty exciting having that big crowd and knowing thousand’s of bears are going to be thrown,’ said Condors legend
Paul Willett. “In the room, there isn’t much talk of it, but a lot of players are thinking they would like to get that first goal
so they cause that mass of bears to be thrown on the ice.”
The United Way of Kern County is once again partnering with the Condors on Teddy Bear Toss to help make sure the
stuffed animals get into the hands of kids that need them most during the Holiday Season.
“It’s amazing to me to see all of the bears flying in person,” said Carmen Bernal, VP of Community Impact at United Way
of Kern County. “The community goes out of their way to help, knowing the bears will go to a child in need. And to see
them all together on the ice it’s an incredible feeling. The United Way feels good about bridging the gap between the fans
and the families who need the stuffed animals. There are so many good stories that we hear.”
While the Condors would love to hear every story and family helped by Teddy Bear Toss, that is of course impossible. But
the organization does appreciate the immense fan support and the amount of charity the Bakersfield community
contributes.
“We’ll never meet many of the kids that get a smile and a warm feeling from receiving a stuffed animal that otherwise
they wouldn’t have gotten,” said Riley. “But little things can make a difference.”
The Condors are looking forward to another successful Teddy Bear Toss in 2009, and we hope you’ll be a part of it.
