The Colorado Quilting Council is a statewide organization of people
interested in preserving the heritage of quilting; promoting excellence
in quilting and related arts; and in providing a source of information
and inspiration.
Dear Quilting Friends,
SPRING…What a beautiful day we
had in Ft Collins. It was great to
see the sun and so many of you at
the meeting. As usual the speaker,
Nancy Eha, inspired me to think
about quilting in a new way. She
talked about the physics of beads
and beading, and I asked her if I
could use that term related to quilting as
a whole and she agreed. I am not very scientific, but
I am intrigued by science and how the world works.
So, I looked up the definition of physics and found—
the physical properties and phenomena of something.
Well that certainly fits quilting.
Membership dues for 2015 are $25 and expire at the end of the
year. Dues after August 1st are $12.50. International membership
is $30 per year. Pin replacement is $25. Guest fees are $10.

It is definitely a phenomenon, both from an individual
point of view as well as from a business perspective.
As I think back to the revival of hand quilting that
began in 1972 it was important to look at the physical
properties of handiwork that had somewhat worn out
its usefulness. Bedding could be bought at a store
much more cheaply than it could be made and if it
was made, using a machine to create it was much
faster. We were approaching the age of technology
and information. However, small pockets of quilters
began bringing back the art of handiwork; hand
piecing, hand appliqué and hand quilting, they
were all the rage. Now 43 years later, quilting has
truly become an art form. It takes all forms, from
the traditional to the contemporary, from bed quilts
to art gallery quilts. It is a multimillion dollar a
year business. In this 43 years, technology has also
influenced the quilt world and probably in the past
five years the Internet, Pintrest, Craftsy, and websites
for shops, teachers, techniques and support for each
other has become the norm.
So as I think about the
physics of quilting,
I am focusing on the
physical properties of this
phenomenon. One of the
things that brought our

was the need to meet and

of handiwork. To share ideas, techniques, stories
and show their latest projects. The information,
technology world allows us to do this, but in a much
more secluded way. We don’t get to see the look of
surprise or wonder as we share the latest quilt with
our friends. We don’t get to touch the new fluffy handor machine-quilted piece that our friend just spent
months to complete. Can we really see the vibrant
colors or the tiny stitches in a computer format? I
believe that as “Quilters” the need to come together
and be with others who share the same love of fabric,
quilts, artwork and design will always be part of
who we are as creative creatures. It is my deepest
desire that we will always continue the opportunity
to come together and share our love of quilting. Have
a wonderful Spring and we will see everyone in
Colorado Springs.

A cute little table runner that is brand new;
Carolyn has just developed the pattern. A
small project with three 10" blocks gives
you a chance to hone your paper piecing
skills under Carolyn’s practiced eye.
You’ll easily finish one block in class—
maybe more, and will have no trouble
with the rest on your own. Finished size is
approximately 18"×38" so you can shop
in your stash for needed materials.
The supply list will be furnished when you
enroll for the class.
A $5 kit fee is payable to Carolyn for
the templates and instructions students
will need.
A certified Niemeyer instructor for 5 years,
Sandy suggests the “Christmas Celebration”
pattern because it uses all the techniques.
The pattern was designed as a tree skirt,
but can be a table topper or throw–60"
diameter, it is big enough for lots of uses.
Class begins Saturday (no extra charge) so
that Sandy can help you sort colors, cut, and
get ready to sew on Sunday. At Inspirations
Quilt Shop, Jaylene Evans and her staff will
help find the fabric you need.
Pattern available through Inspirations. Call
Jaylene at 970-542-0810 to reserve your
copy. Fabric requirements vary depending
upon which pattern you choose.
Fill out the form on page 6 and check the box for the workshop that you have selected. Send monies and form to

New Business
• Lynda Bruce, Chair of Documentation, made a motion to
increase the quilt documentation fee from $5 to $8, and to
increase the cost of a label from $1 to $5. The motion was
seconded by Laurel Hoppes and it was passed. These new
fees will start in calendar year 2016.
• Penny Christian, Chair of Gifts and Grants, reported
that the The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum requested
a grant to help replace the older sewing machines that
they use for their children's classes. They presented three
bids for the cost of two Bernina 1008 machines that
they felt would fit the childrens' use well. The cost of two
machines is $1,536 from the Presser Foot in Longmont.
The museum will also be requesting grant money
from other entities for four additional replacement
machines. After reviewing the application, Gifts and
Grants requests the board approve their application
be submitted to a vote of the membership for approval
at the March meeting to award a Grant to RMQM for
the purchase of the two aforementioned machines. The
museum will also be requesting grant money from other
entities for four additional replacement machines.

The Quilt-a-Fair Committee has been busy getting ready
for 2015! This year’s event is September 25–26 at the
Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont.
As of today, we have
57 vendors signed up to
participate in the annual
event, four of which are new
to QAF.
Interested guilds who would
like a chance to participate in
the raffle quilt gallery, please
contact Toni Fitzwater at toni_
[email protected]. We need your requests by May 20th. If
we receive more than five requests, a lottery drawing will
be held to determine the five winners. Each guild will be
notified by email no later than June 20th.
The admission fee for the 2015 show will remain $5.
We would like to remind everyone that folks selling quilt
raffle tickets for their guild or for CQC need to pay the $5
admission fee at the front door. Anyone working as a QAF
volunteer gets free admission for the day they work. Quilta-Fair remains the biggest fund raiser for CQC and the
QAF committee appreciates your support of the admission
fee to fund CQC activities.

ABC Quilts of Colorado is a non-profit group
of volunteers who make small quilts for children
in need. Since their inception in 1993 more than
18,000 quilts have been made and donated to
agencies in the area. They distributed over 1,700
quilts last year and were still not able to fulfill all
the requests for quilts of love and comfort. They
presented a request for a grant of $500 to offset
batting costs for these small quilts. After reviewing
the application, Gifts and Grants recommended
approval, the CQC board concurred and their
application was approved by the membership.
Congratulations to ABC Quilts of Colorado for
the award of a Grant of $500 from CQC for the
purchase of batting to provide additional quilts of

Hall of Fame. June 1st is the deadline.
Dawn presented the budget with the changes made since they
were published. She reminded the membership that the budget

major purchases approved by the board. Joyce Taff moved to
accept the budget. Edna Pelzman seconded. No discussion.

the current raffle quilt and reminded that the fund supports
educational opportunities; so fill out an application and get paid

Volunteer Coordinator, Laural Hoppes, asked people to log their
hours on Our Volts website. She reminded everyone to volunteer
for board positions for the current year and next. She also added
that survey forms found on their meeting seats be turned into her.
Programs, Mary Rush told us that in April we have a speaker
change. Carolyn Cullinan-McCormick will be speaking and will
teach a one day class for $45. May's speaker in Ft. Morgan is Tim
Latimer who is a quilt rescuer. He will have a large trunk show.
The class will feature Sandy Lueth teaching a Judy Neimeyer

Show and Tell. And he informed everyone that the pictures of the
quilts can be seen on the CQC website.

Gifts and Grants, Penny Christensen—The Rocky Mountain
Quilt Museum presented a request for a grant to help replace their
old children's classes sewing machines. They presented three bids
for the cost of two Bernina 1008 machines that they feel will hold

$1,536 from the Presser Foot in Longmont. After reviewing the
application, Gifts and Grants requested the board approve their
application and submit the vote to membership for approval at
