Summer Fun &
Building Starts Growing
FROM THE
COACH’S DESK
by Arnold Sutter
We are seeing some really positive building and
development growth in the Western Basin Toledo
Region. New residential building has been started in
Perrysburg, Whitehouse and around Lake Erie. Bill
Brennan, the new CEO at the Toledo Home Builders
Association, is a key to the “return to greatness” of
the greater Toledo area. Hope you enjoyed our “new
and colorful look” in our Spring edition. Our staff is
very excited to increase the quality of our publication.
Thanks to all the businesses who value a verbal
agreement on the phone, a commitment to support
each other with a handshake, AND to promote a
quality colorful, educational, and regional media
tool---the Western Basin-Toledo Magazine. A focus
on alternative energy sources and the people who
use and support those products as keys to our future.
This is especially true for new homes in the Lake Erie
vacationland area. Exciting new strategies in building new homes, businesses, and entire communities are on the horizon, with the use of geo-thermal
heating and A/C (EARTH), WIND, and (FIRE) solar
power. Our administrative assistant, Bob Younker,
has given us a recording organization, which is very
valuable. Bob is a long time friend and he is a great
record keeper---we want you as a seasonal busi-
ness partner! Call him at the office!!! 419-836-7707.
Thanks to the entire team of professional businesses
supporting Bickley and Associates and Schaeffer
Builders around the ERIE ISLANDS for our “all color” and entertaining Volume XXXVII. Thanks to the
businesses in Milan, Oregon and Genoa, Lake Erie
West is a great place to live, work and play!!!
Our XXXVIII EDITION highlights the ENTIRE
WESTERN BASIN-TOLEDO REGION--with a big
focus on Toledo. DANBERRY REALTY, led by Vicky
Pelchat and David Miller, are highlighted in our
Cover Story along with builders like Don Flenner
of Hallmark Homes. A new and exciting Summit
Street residential and commercial development will
be introduced by Doctor Donald Steinberg (Doc’s
Summit Street Landing). The builders, contractors,
and lead architects who are paving the way in Alternative Energy Sources for the building trades, are
a seasonal feature of our magazine. What an exciting new wave of potential growth, job opportunities,
and greater energy conservation showing up in our
region.
Our XXXIX Edition 2012 will highlight Seimet
Custom Homes.

Small Towns In Northwest Ohio Made
Big Heroes in American History
by Arnold Sutter
We are celebrating the 200 anniversary of the
Battle of Lake Erie for the next 12 months and it
was towns like Fremont, Tiffin, Perrysburg, and of
course ,Put in Bay who carried the American torch
against the British. It was also the small towns of
Williston, Curtice, and Oak Harbor that provided
the solid and patriotic young men to defeat the Nazi’s in World War II.
In our last edition I focused on the incredible
heroics of Oliver H. Perry and his leadership of our
nation’s small (557 sailors) but efficient Navy (nine
ships’ carronades) to stop the British involvement
in the control of one of our most valuable assets,
the Great Lakes. The communication between
Oliver H. Perry and William Henry Harrison and
the US Army at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg was done
through “runners” to Fort Seneca (Tiffin) and Fort
Stephenson in Fremont. The key to the communication between our Army and Navy leaders was a
group “runners”----much like the Roman Empire
(marathoners)--footrunners as they were called,.
They were more efficient than horseback thru the
“Black Swamp” mud and wooden roads. One such
runner was Peter Navarre--Route 2 in Oregon,
Ohio is named after him; it connects Toledo with
Port Clinton and the Islands.
Small towns along this
“highway through the Swamp”
grew. One small town where I
grew up, on a short cut (Rt 579)
from Rt 2 to Route 51 (goes right
thru Toledo to Fremont and Rt
20) was Williston, Ohio. There
were many men and women that
gave their lives and services to our
military through the years. I want
to mention 6! Three of them were
members of my family: Paul Sutter, my father, who fought in the
Figi Islands; Wallace Dunn, who
never fought but was a founder
of the Allen Township VFD; and
his son Arnold Dunn, (my namesake and Uncle) who gave up his life for his country
on the last day of World War II in Italy as an Army
chaplain. A close friend of my Uncle Arnold’s was
Bob “Smoke” Helle who still lives and shares his
life’s skills as an electrician. He stops often to tell of
his life in this small town and his relationship with
my Uncle (“Ducky”) Arnold. Two other “Williston
Love Birds” were Betty and Virgil Roecker. Betty
served in the Pentagon during the Korean War and

Virgil was a member of President Truman’s Honor
Guard at the White House in Washington. This
“Greatest Generation,” as Tom Brokaw would call
them, really were incredible in their unselfishness
and great entrepreneurships in creating small businesses after WWII.
The Western Basin of Lake Erie has plenty of history to be proud of; especially the men and women
that made it great!
Nature &
Recreation
by Arnold Sutter
Amy West and her staff of fine servers offer some
fine pasta, wine and jazz for the locals as well as the
great tourist numbers pouring in to our western basin of Lake Erie. Slater’s is in its second summer of
marqueeing the Bob Swift Trio, while highlighting
Anna as the lead singer. Anna and her jazz professionals really have caused a stir in the entertainment
offered in Port Clinton, Ohio.
I have created an entire day of fun for my Wednesdays in and around the Lake Erie Islands. My morning begins at Diana’s Restaurant with a fresh bowl of
mixed local fruit (melons, strawberries and peaches.) Then my date Brownie and I catch the 9:00 am
Miller Ferry to South Bass Island where Larry, the
owner of Put-in-Bay Taxi, picks us up and drops
us off at Delaware Rentals. After a brief historical
discussion on Russian history with Irena Matisse,
Brownie and I head out to
enjoy the natural beauty of
the island.
A Boardwalk Lobster bisque lunch is our next
stop--we enjoy the best bisque north of Key West-and maybe even some Key West-made Key Lime
pie. Around 2:00 pm the fun starts; my work day is
over! Tough day, right? The Wednesday group kicks
off the entertainment (Paradise Island or Bob Gatewood’s Calabash) at the Roundhouse Bar. By the
way, Brownie as been named the “best tail on the
island,” by the rowdy crowd at the Roundhouse Bar.
We move on to Mr. Ed’s swim up bar, The Mist, to
welcome Ronnie Howard and the motown sound of
“Cruisin” to do some “Boogalooin Down Broadway”
in and around the pool. By 5:45 we are headed back
to the Roundhouse to catch the final set to “shake
our tail feathers” on the dance floor. I like to pick up
a perch sandwich and share it with Brownie at the
Put in Bay Winery, also known as the Doller House.
Then we head back to the mainland to put the icing
on the cake with some wine, pasta and the best jazz
at Slater’s.
By the time we arrive in downtown Port Clinton,
the Bob Swift Trio can be heard all over the “coming
back” downtown! The smell of hot chicken pasta is
in the room as we enter the old “Tin Goose Hanger,”
as I can remember in the past, “busy” downtown
evening atmosphere. The economic times in Ottawa
County have been tough, but the worst is over and
there is a revival feeling in downtown Port Clinton.
Amy has other special nights like fifity cent wing
night on Thursdays, Friday night New York Strip
for $10.95 and usually a special band for Saturday
nights.
Be sure you plan to celebrate “over the hump day”
on Madison Street in downtown Port Clinton and
enjoy the best in jazz and pasta with Amy and her
fine line up of professionals and super food!

led our nation in something that most intellectuals and
common folk just thought they were “blowing smoke”!
The thought to most was, our natural resources
were endless. Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir were
mutual friends and pioneers in the conservation of

Where the Innovation of Man’s Mind
Meets Conservation of Natural Resources
energy needs in an efficient and highly progressively
thinking manner.
Making homes, vehicles and businesses more energy
efficient is seen as a largely untapped solution to
addressing the problems of polution, global warming,
energy security and fossil fuel depletion. Many of these
ideas have been discussed for years, especially after
the 1973 Arab Oil Crisis. In the late 1970s, physicist
Amory Lovins popularized the notion of a “soft energy
path,” with a stong focus on energy efficiency. Energy
efficiency has proven to be a cost-effective strategy
for building economies without necessarily growing
energy consumption.
Renewable power is becoming an important part
of our nation’s energy supply. As the solar industry
matures, new and innovative approaches emerge
to help organizations buy and finance solar energy.
No matter what model you use, you want to fully
understand your state and local policy framework,
incentives and tax savings.
GREEN 4 ENERGY has the experienced professional
staff to provide you with the best counseling and
guidance through your decisions to increase energy
efficiency and cost effectiveness. Call Nick Spognardi
(843-754-9017) or email him (nspognardi@

alternatives available.
