WHOLE HOUSE APPROACH
You could cherry-pick individual energy saving and renewable technologies,
but to get the highest savings you need to think about the whole house.
No one technology will solve the problem.

Energy direction (from the source to the demand)
The whole house approach is quite simple really and can be condensed into ten steps.
1. Insulate and use efficient buildings
2. Choose a suitable efficient heat source for your space heating
3. Decide if you want solar thermal panels to help your hot water efficiency
4. Decide if Solar PV can help
5. Choose low-water usage taps and showers, and consider rain-water harvesting or
grey water recycling
6. Choose your DHW cylinder to suit the DHW usage of the house
7. Choose the most appropriate heat emitters – UFH, fan assisted radiators or oversized
“normal radiators”
8. Get the right controls to make it all work together
9. Think about heat recovery systems
10. Use energy efficient appliances and products in the building
The guide will help you select products for the whole house approach.

Mechanical Extraction Ventilation & Underfloor Heating Energy
MECHANICAL EXTRACTION VENTILATION
Heat exchange takes place within the appliance by
blowing the outgoing stale but warm air through
an adjoining channel to the incoming fresh cooler
air which is blown in the opposite direction. In line
with the second law of thermodynamics, heat will
move from the hotter region to the colder region.
By keeping heat within the building, demand on
heating systems is reduced. This is because the
thermostat for the heating system does not

Energy
Solar - Photovoltaic & Thermal
SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC
Solar PV systems use silicone crystals to create
electrical energy from daylight. Although daylight
levels in the UK are not as high as many parts of the
world, there is more than enough energy to produce
1000s of kWh of electricity from a house roof.
The panels can be installed on almost any roof,
canopy or façade, and can even be mounted on
frames directly on the ground or a flat roof.
PV panels are available in various sizes and

efficiencies, in order to maximise the ammount of
energy produced from a system a high yielding panel
should be chosen.

SOLAR THERMAL
FLAT PANEL
Solar thermal systems collect solar energy as heat,
which is transferred to a storage cylinder for use as
domestic hot water.
Solar thermal systems should be configured to give
60-70% of a household’s annual domestic hot water,
with 100% coverage during the summer months!
During winter this will drop to around 20% of the
EVACUATED TUBE
domestic hot water demand.
Collectors can be flat plate or evacuated tube

collectors. Evacuated tube collectors can be more
efficient than flat plate collectors, but are generally
more expensive. Flat plate collectors are robust and
simple in design, and should last in excess of 35 years.
Wood & Pellet Burning Stoves & Biomass Boilers Energy
WOOD & PELLET BURNING STOVES
How do wood fuelled heating systems work?
There are two main ways of using wood to heat
you home:
■
A standalone stove burning logs or pellets to
heat a single room. Some can also be fitted with
a back boiler to provide water heating as well.
■
A boiler burning pellets, logs or chips connected
to a central heating and hot water system.
Log burning stoves and boilers have to be filled with
wood by hand. Some pellet and chip burners use

BIOMASS BOILERS
Wood Pellet Heating has been widely used in Europe
since the mid ‘90s and has contributed greatly to
helping these countries meet their carbon reduction
targets. Therefore wood pellet heating technology is
well proven and is growing in popularity in the UK as
fossil fuel prices rise. The main advantages associated
with wood pellets over other biomass fuels are:
■
Dense and take up less space
(1 tonne requires 1.8 cubic metres)
■
Readily available
■
Boilers that burn wood pellet offer high degree
of automation
■
High calorific value (high energy)
■
Low ash content

Low Energy Lighting & Sun Scoops
ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS
Fitting low energy light bulbs is proven to save the
homeowner money on their electricity bill. Even
though the intial outlay is more, they can last up
to 12 times longer, making them extremely cost
effective. Quality improvements in the last few
years will also help encourange more home
owners to choose low energy, now they are
brighter quicker and available for dimmer
switches. Fitting them into your development as

SUN SCOOPS
One product available makes the most of the sun’s
natural light during the day and makes an
interesting feature in a new build or extended
property. Sun scoops gather natural sunlight and
reflect it back into the room, giving a light, airy
feel and of course, no electricity is required.

Bath capacity
Tap and mixer flow rates
The Water Efficiency Calculator requires the input of the
capacity of baths up to the bottom of the bath overflow.
Today there are a wide diversity of bath shapes and sizes
and it is possible to purchase baths with a capacity as
low as 116 litres (a typical average capacity for baths is
around 190 litres).
All taps and mixers inside the house are measured and
they can account for high water consumption. Whether
you need to reduce the flow rate on taps or mixers will
be determined by the water pressure in the building.
Most mixers and pillar taps can be fitted with water
regulators that either regulate the water into or out of
the fitting.
To keep water usage low it is recommended that both a
bath and a shower, or a shower only, are installed in a
dwelling. If there is only a bath it will be given a very
high weighting.
WC flush volume
The calculator takes into account the amount of water
required to flush WCs in the house. Modern WCs often
require less water than they used to and by specifying a
dual flush it is assumed that the small flush will be used
around twice as much as the large flush – dramatically
reducing the amount of water consumed.

Showers
An uncontrolled shower can use a considerable
amount of water under high pressure.
Shower outlet regulators are fitted between the
shower valve and the shower hose and head.
Regulators are available to achieve a flow rate of
9, 8, 7, 6 or 5 litres per minute.

The Gravity System is ideal for domestic applications. It has a major advantage
in that in the event of a power failure on site (or the rain stocks running dry)

the system will automatically switch to mains water supply to ensure a continuity
of service.
The gravity system requires a header tank to complete the package. Kingspanwater supply a header tank as
an optional extra which contains two independent valves operating both the mains and rainwater supply
(we recommend a Kingspanwater header tank is used). The water from the header tank will flow by gravity
to the serviced appliances. The system will always draw from the rainwater supply first.

Rainwater Harvesting & Greywater Recycling System
ABOVE GROUND RAINWATER HARVESTING
In the UK a typical family uses 70,000 litres of
mains water each year for toilet flushing, laundry
and garden irrigation and much of this could be
replaced with rainwater. Actual savings depend on
local rainfall patterns, the size of the roof
catchment and the space available for water
storage. The potential mains water savings in a
light commercial building can be up to 80% of
consumption.

MINERAL WOOL INSULATION
Mineral wool is the United Kingdom’s leading choice of building insulation product due to its
recognized versatility and all round performance. There are many different insulation types on the
market today, but only mineral wool products have sustainability credentials combined with proven
thermal, acoustic & fire properties, providing the best insulation value.
With increasing pressures on our fragile environment, focus is sharpening on the ways in which
more environmentally friendly products and methods can be developed. In the building industry this
translates to sustainable building practices and ‘sustainable development’.

Sustainable Drainage Systems Building Materials & Waste
PERMEABLE PAVING
Growing urbanisation has resulted in the increase of
impermeable areas - roads, driveways, parking facilities,
pedestrianisation and roof surfaces. This, coupled with
higher density patterns of construction, has led to
ever-larger areas with very rapid water run off and a
proportionately reduced area where natural,
permeable drainage can occur in a controlled manner.
This means that rainfall moves very quickly from
impermeable hard surfaces through to watercourse
with little reduction in either volume or speed. In turn,
this means that there exists a progressively higher risk
of flooding.

Permeable paving has the ability to attenuate the
speed and volume of run off, thereby minimising local
flood risks and collectively, mitigating flood risk over
larger areas.
WASTE BINS, COMPOST BINS & PLANTERS
Whether you’re renovating existing stock or building
from the ground up, it’s inevitable that you will
create waste that needs to be carefully disposed of.
Dealing with waste responsibly in this industry has
long been requested by law, but increasingly, taking
the time to recycle packaging and waste where
possible is considered to be best practice. Waste
accounts for 6% of the Code for Sustainable
Homes, and knowing how best to deal with your
own can be a great help towards getting the level
rating you need.
