MORE NEWSLETTER AWARD WINNERS!
Each year JCNA presents Newsletter Awards in six
categories: Photography, Event Reports, Heritage, Travel,
Technical and Jaguar Life. In the nine years 2006 to 2014,
CXKJR members have won eighteen times for photos and
articles in Classical Gas. It is interesting to note that there
are over sixty JCNA clubs with newsletters, so this is not a
minor accomplishment.
The 2015 JCNA Newsletter Awards have just been
announced and CXKJR members Allan Lawrence and
Timothy Horton won awards in the Technical and Jaguar
Life categories respectively. Allan won a 1st place for his
“Ethanol-Blended Gasoline, Biofuels & What It Means to
You” article in the January/February 2015 issue. Timothy
Horton took 2nd place for his “Jaguars on the Screen: Motion
Pictures Part I” in the November/December 2015 issue.

UPDATE ON THE INTREPID AUSSIES
The Australian MG owners who made if from the tip of
South America to BC and Alaska last year are returning to
Vancouver in May to pick up three of their cars from storage.
Two additional MGs are being shipped to join the group that
will be taking part in the VanDusen All British Field Meet on
May 21 in conjunction with the CCMGC display. The next
day the convoy led by Dave and Laurel Godwin in their 1961

the US, including taking part in the 2016 All-MG gathering
in Kentucky. Ending up in Halifax in July, the cars will be
shipped to the UK for an eventual journey in 2017 along the
Trans-Siberian Highway.
Their itinerary immediately after the Vancouver ABFM:
Sunday May 22 – Whistler; Monday May 23 – Clearwater,
BC; Tuesday May 24 – Jasper, Alberta; Wednesday May 25
– Banff; Thursday May 26 – Calgary. A number of CCMGC
members will be driving with the Aussies as far as Jasper/
Banff and Calgary. For information on the group going as far

Now a CXKJR/CCMGC tradition, this annual event
started in 2009 as an all-MG variation on the North
American MGA Register’s “Drive Your MGA Day”. In
2010 our event was expanded to include both MGs
and Jaguars. Over the years, destinations for Drive Your
MG or Jaguar Days have included: Three Mountains
(Seymour, Grouse & Cypress); Ian & Doreen Newby’s
estate; the Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish;
the Village Pub & Restaurant in Ocean Park; Legends
Bistro on Cultus Lake; Adrian’s Restaurant at the
Langley Regional Airport; the Station Grill in Mission.
This year there’s a new twist. Coordinated by MG VicePresident Rob McMillin, our Drive Your MG or Jaguar
Day is a multiple hub and spoke rally where drivers can
rally at points close to home and then drive in convoy to
the Burnaby Lake Clubhouse for lunch (pizza provided).
The Clubhouse parking lot will be an impromptu car
show!
Five rally points have been identified: the Westview

In Parts 1 and 2 of Jaguars on the Screen I presented ten examples
of motion pictures in which Jaguar cars were featured prominently. In
this third instalment we will examine three well-known appearances
by Jaguar cars on the small screen in various television series.
Actor John Thaw poses with the 1960 Jaguar
Mark 2 used throughout production of the
Inspector Morse television series. The car
was fitted with a non-standard black vinyl roof.
1978-1979 Return of the Saint
Bond in 1973.
From 1962 to 1969 The Saint enjoyed a successful run on
British television. Based on the novels and short stories
of Leslie Charteris, the action-adventure series starred
Roger Moore as Simon Templar, a wealthy individual who
travels around Britain and Europe helping the people he
encounters. The series cemented the status of Roger Moore
as a successful actor in this genre, and led to his selection
as a replacement for Sean Connery in the role of James
In 1978 the series was revived and updated for ITV
Television, and was also broadcast on CBS Television in the
United States. Co-produced by Britain’s ITC Entertainment
and Italy’s RAI, the series ran for 24 episodes and starred
Ian Ogilvy as Simon Templar. The series borrowed a few
storytelling elements from its predecessor, including a precredit sequence narrated by Simon and ending with a halo
appearing above his head to identify him, as a short musical
quote of the theme music from the
original series is heard. Unlike the
original series which was shot mostly
in British studios and locations, the
new episodes were filmed on location
throughout Europe.
The 1975 Jaguar XJ-S used during production of The Return of the Saint, as it
appeared in private ownership in 2008. This was an early prototype designated
XJ27. Note the chrome B-pillars which were changed to black for regular production.

Jaguar Cars were quick to seize the
promotional opportunity afforded
by the new series. In 1962 Jaguar
had turned down a request from the
producers of the original series to
provide an E-Type for Simon Templar’s
car. The producers then turned to Volvo
with a similar request for their P1800,
a sports car which had also been
introduced to the world at the Geneva

by Timothy J. Horton
Motor Show in 1961. Its subsequent use throughout the
series elevated the car‘s popularity; years later Roger Moore
would identify the Volvo P1800 as his favourite car of all the
vehicles he drove on film and in television.
In 1978 Jaguar were determined not to repeat their mistake,
and offered the relatively new XJ-S for use in the series.
They provided a single car direct from the factory which was
actually an early prototype designated as XJ27. The car was
registered as PWK 530R with chassis number 2W 1138,
engine number 3S 1166 SA, and a manual gearbox KM
1004. (This was the fourth manual gearbox fitted to an XJ-S
and was a rare option as 99% of all XJ-S and XJS production
was equipped with automatic transmission.) Also rare at
this time was the inclusion of a steel sunroof option. The car
was finished with a white exterior and silver B-posts, and a
Cinnamon leather interior. The car was built on August 22,
1975 and retained at the factory for use as a test vehicle by
British Leyland. It was given to the producers of The Return
of The Saint on April 15, 1977.
On screen, Simon Templar’s XJ-S appeared with the licence
plate ST1 (as did the Volvo P1800 in the original series) and
it was equipped with a mobile telephone, a rarity for any
car in 1978. The car appeared in 20 of the 24 episodes.
At least two other cars borrowed from dealers local to the
international locations were also used; in some shots a
white car with the more common black interior is seen, and
in another shot a car without the sunroof is seen. One of
these cars may have been required after Ian Ogilvy requested
permission to drive the car back from Italy to the UK, and
reportedly burned out the clutch en route. The primary car
was sold by the producers after the show ended.
In 1993 two fans of the Saint television shows located the
car. It was purchased and relocated to Aberdeen, Scotland. It
was sold at a private auction several years later and stored in
a shed on the Shetland Islands until 2003, when it was sold
to the current owner and returned to London. Around this
time it was featured in Classic Cars magazine. In 2008 it was
relocated to northwest England where it resides today.
1985-1989 The Equalizer
In the fall of 1985 this series debuted on CBS Television
and ran until the end of the 1989 season. It starred veteran
British actor Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired
intelligence officer with a mysterious past who employs the
skills from his earlier career to assist innocent people who

find themselves in dangerous circumstances. The series
utilized elements from the spy film, private investigator and
police drama genres.
The producers of the series required a car for the primary
character’s regular transport, and one which helped to
define the character’s refined style. The Equalizer is believed
to be the only American television series in which Jaguar
Cars contracted with a television producer to feature its
automobiles for promotional purposes. For each season that
it ran, the series was required to have a current example from
Jaguar’s line of vehicles.
The pilot episode featured a 1985 Jaguar XJ6 Series III
Vanden Plas with Lacquer Black exterior and Dove Gray
leather interior. (Note: In the United States the Vanden
Plas was the name given to the higher trim level option for
the XJ6, whereas in Canada these cars were badged as XJ6
Sovereign.) The car appeared consistently during the opening
credits. A similar 1986 XJ6 Series III was used throughout the
first season.
For the second season, the 1986 car was replaced with

seasons the car was replaced with the new model XJ40

unknown.
1987-2000 Inspector Morse
This long-running British detective series was based
on a series of novels by Colin Dexter and starred
actors John Thaw as Chief Inspector Morse and Kevin
Whately as his assistant Sergeant Lewis. A total of 33
two-hour episodes were produced between 1987 and
2000. As is typical with most British murder mystery
series, each episode
presented a complete story
revolving around a murder
investigation. They were
filmed in and around Oxford,
England. The series was
broadcast on ITV in the UK
and on PBS in the U.S. and
Canada. The author Colin
Dexter, upon whose novels
the series was based,
made unaccredited cameo
appearances in all but three
of the episodes.
The Inspector Morse Jaguar is a 1960 Mark 2 with the
2.4 litre engine. (Of a total of 80,000 Mark 2 Jaguars,
approximately 25,000 were completed with the 2.4
litre engine.) The chassis number is 102827DN
and the engine number is BG4462.8. The exterior
colour is Regency Red with a non-standard black vinyl
roof. It was first registered in the county of Surrey on
July 5, 1960 with number plate 248 RPA and went
through several owners during its early career. The car
was purchased specifically for the Inspector Morse
television series by Carlton Television and remained in
their ownership throughout production, which came to
an end in November 2000.
The Jaguar was given away by the producers in a
competition a year after filming ended, and went to a
lawyer based in London
who auctioned it off for
£53,200 in 2002. The
new owners commissioned
classic car restorers David
A.C.Royle & Co. of Durham
to undertake a full nut
and bolt restoration. This
was completed in June
2005 at a cost in excess
of £100,000. The car

Spring Run:
A Smash Hit!
W
ith the spring equinox on March
20 this year, CXKJR/CCMGC
celebrated the beginning of
spring the day before on Saturday March
19 with the annual Spring Run. Forty MGs
and Jaguars (plus one Ferrari) and almost
seventy members participated in the event,
with cloudy skies opening up to sunshine
now and again. But no rain! The route was
planned by Tim Horton and Greg Wagorn and
went from the Real Canadian Superstore
near the north end of Ironworkers Memorial
Bridge, through the upper elevations of
North Vancouver and the British Properties,
ending up in Fisherman’s Cove. Tim Horton
led the convoy in his 2006 Jaguar X-Type
Estate. Forty club members visited the worldclass MG Collection owned by Peter Welch
and fifty had lunch at the West Vancouver
Yacht Club, with the overflow brunching at

Marina. [Photos by Timothy Horton unless

2016 STARTS WITH FUN EVENTS
Mid-Winter Gala
This year’s Gala took place January 23rd at the Wild Fig
Restaurant in the Coquitlam Executive Plaza Hotel. The
centrepiece for the evening was a fabulous buffet. While the
scheduled dance band wasn’t available, an added attraction
for those who wandered down the hall to the ballroom was

For many years, Mike Powley organized the March
membership meeting as an opportunity for club members
to present innovative displays of models and/or other
collectibles (not required to be car-related), trying to win the
hearts of members voting for their favourites. Six displays
were entered at this year’s Collectibles Night March 8:
•Chris Venning: Military & Police Badges & Hats (1st place)
•Joe Carroll: MG & Children’s Wonder Books (2nd place)
•Mike Coutts: Northwest Coast Carvings (Mike is the artist)

You Fool! It’s a Tool!
Bob Sherman
My apologies - but I wanted to get
your attention with a silly title. Editor
Jennifer always needs stories, and
Bearoyl Racing has not kicked into
gear yet this year. So, I thought
I’d write a couple articles about
some tools that you might not know
about, but would find useful.
The tool de jour is a gasket cutter.
The one I found on-line at Amazon is the “Lang Tools
9500 Eleven Piece Gasket Hole Punch Set.” Have you
ever needed a simple gasket and not had one at hand?
Well then, with sheets of gasket material, available at low
cost in different thicknesses, and this tool, your problem
is solved.
In making a gasket, one must often punch holes of
varying diameter. The tool comes with cutters, in ten
YOUNG CAR ENTHUSIASTS WANTED!
sizes. Simply choose the size
cutter you need, attach the
rod, find a surface like wood or
Masonite so as not to dull the
cutter, and grab your hammer.
Place the cutter where you
need it on the gasket, give
a couple whacks with the
hammer, and the hole is cut. I
will refer you to Hemmings.com
and search “Gasket making
101” for a good illustration of how to use this tool.
The tool is not too expensive, generally around $36
USD. Maybe Princess Auto might even have them? You
can also use it for cutting holes in carpet, such as when
making holes for seat belt attachments. You won’t use
this tool often, but when you need it, it is pretty slick. Do
a search on your computer and you will find sources.
Happy Punching!
‘KIDS & PETS IN CARS’ IS BACK
Our Kids in Cars and Pets in Cars features have proven
popular and therefore keep those photos coming. Send
your submissions to Classical Gas Senior Editor Jennifer
Orum at [email protected], together with information on
the names of the kids or pets and the photographer.
As part of the Heritage show at Waterfront Park on
August 20 we are again including a Youth Judging
activity sponsored by Hagerty Classic Car Insurance.
The participants will receive direction and simple
instructions and then be tasked with judging a small
number of MGs, Jaguars & Other British entrant cars.
The object is to promote enthusiasm in classic cars
among young people so they will inherit our interest
in owning, enjoying and preserving them. We are
canvassing for participants between the ages of 12 to
17 and since space is limited, don’t delay.
If you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews
or in fact know kids of friends or neighbours who are
within this age range and may be interested, please
pass on their names, ages and contact information
to Tony Cohen at [email protected] or Tom
Koven at [email protected] .
