www.pellstonschools.org Pellston Public Schools NEWSLETTER Serving Northwest Michigan in Bliss, Burt Lake, Carp Lake, Center, Hebron, Maple River, McKinley, Munro, Pleasantview, Readmond, and Wawatam Townships From the Superintendent Volume XXVI, Issue 1 | October 2016| Fall Issue On behalf of the Board of Education and staff at Pellston Public Schools, welcome back to the start of the 2016-2017 school year. I would also like to welcome all of our new students, families and community members. We are excited to welcome you to our community school. What a beautiful summer it was across northern Michigan. I hope that each of you had a relaxing and enjoyable break and had an opportunity to spend time surrounded by both friends and family. We are off to a great start and Pellston Public Schools is buzzing with excitement! We are proud to offer to area Monique Dean, Superintendent students in Pellston and surrounding communities a strong program of academics, athletics, Career and Technical Education (CTE) and extra-curricular activities to help each of our students develop into their fullest potentials. With our expanding programs and services, we are a school of choice in northern Michigan. NEW COURSE OFFERINGS As the district continues to expand its CTE offerings, we are excited to announce the addition of the Aviation, Science and Technology Program for students in our district. This program is being held at the Pellston Regional Airport and enables students to have a truly hands on experience in the field of aviation, certainly a point of pride for the Pellston community. With a slight increase in per pupil funding from the state, we have a budget for 2016-2017 that will allow us to maintain at high levels both programs and services for district students. Pellston Schools will continue to offer core and elective courses in a variety of areas for district students. New on the elective list at both the middle and high school is a course in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Students enrolled in these classes will work to build unmanned aerial vehicles - also known as drones - as part of their course work, work on coding and build trebuchets. This course is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards in Technology and has been partially funded with several thousands of dollars in grant funds for reusable building supplies. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS I am also pleased to share with our families an update on the middle/high school gymnasium floor; it looks terrific! As a district we have been diligent in planning for the refurbishing of the gymnasium floor. Through the hard work of the athletic department, boys and girls basketball programs, 50/50 raffles and securing grant funds, the district was able to place an updated hand painted logo in the center of the gym floor, repaint lines and resurface the entire gym floor including base molding! What a terrific source of pride for Pellston Public Schools as well as the Pellston community. I would like to personally thank all of the members of the community that supported this project. Another area of focus for the summer was an update to the middle/high school cafeteria. In an ongoing effort to build Hornet Pride, the district has been working to transform each of the district buildings by boasting the school colors of brown and gold! The new tables and chairs in the cafeteria are certainly an excellent example of Hornet Pride. To continue enhancing student safety and wellbeing, the district has purchased an updated phone system. In the past, 9-1-1 local Public Safety Answering Point (PASP) responders that received a call from Pellston Public Schools, similar to many public schools across Michigan, could identify which building the call was made from, but did not have precise location data on which classroom or district office within the building had made the emergency call. The new phone system will enable “Enhanced 9-1-1”, also known as E9-1-1. Responders such as fire, police or EMS will know exactly which building classroom and office made the call. Our new system is now compliant with new legislation that requires public buildings to have this in place by December 31, 2019. Continued on Page 2 |2 Pell ston Publi c School s New sletter | October 2016 Superintendent Continued... HEADLEE HEDGE The November 8, 2016, election is just around the corner. At the ballot polling station, you will see Pellston Public Schools asking voters for an Operating Millage known as the Headlee Restoration also known as the Headlee Hedge. Voters will be asked to allow the District to levy the full 18 mills on non-homestead property. This proposal includes a provision for a Headlee Restoration which could be used in multiple-year renewals when the District might face a Headlee rollback. A Headlee rollback occurs when property values grow faster than the rate of inflation which results in a loss of revenue for the District. With a Headlee Restoration in place, the District can use up to 2 mills to restore the 18 mill collection, so no State School Aid revenue is lost. Again, this proposal only affects commercial property, industrial property, vacant property, rental homes and apartment buildings. Your primary residence will not be impacted by this proposal. THIS PROPOSAL WILL NOT INCREASE TAXES OVER THE CURRENT 18 MILLS. VISIT US! On a final note, I encourage each of you to become involved in your school and in your children’s education. We welcome you to visit classrooms and school-sponsored events. We have a very active Parent Teacher Organization at the Elementary School who assist in and out of the classroom and welcome interested parents at any time. Your help and support is of utmost importance to the success of all of our children. Together we are “Pellston Strong!” If you have any question or concerns regarding our schools, please feel free to contact our school offices or me. My office is located in the south side in the Middle/High School building, at the corner of Wright and Elm Streets. The telephone number for this office is 231.539.8682. Although beautiful warm weather was abundant in northern Michigan this summer, earlier sunsets and crisp summer evenings ignite the excitement of starting a new school year! I believe the 2016-2017 school year is going to be the best year yet as we strive to reach our vision of creating a learning environment in which all learners, children and adults, grow and succeed! We are committed to a continued partnership with families in order to make this year a very positive Tami Pichla educational experience for each and every child attending Pellston Pellston Elementary - Principal Elementary School! We will continue to seek ways to improve our school and set high expectations for our staff and students. The Pellston Elementary School Improvement Team met several times this summer with the goal of developing a building-wide action plan based on the principles of the Full Value Agreement and the Positive Behavior Support philosophy. This plan will create a more consistent teaching and learning environment that can support the academic and social/emotional needs of ALL of our students. Based on feedback we received from our families and staff members in the spring, we have created a schedule that provides ALL students in the elementary school with physical education every day! We have also added time to our lunch and recess schedule in order to give students more time to eat and move throughout the day! The teachers, support staff, and administrators at Pellston Schools are committed to serving the students and families of our community. We are excited about the 2016-2017 school year and look forward to an awesome year of positive learning opportunities! Please let me know if I can ever be of any assistance to you (231-539-8421). Vol ume XXVI , I ssue 1 | October 2016 | Fall I ssue |9 Mr. Schlappi on STEAM… Greetings! I hope you had a great summer, and found lots of exciting things to do. I sure did! Through Char-Em ISD, I was able to participate in a four day training session on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). UAVs are commonly referred to as drones, and I am proud to say that I am an experienced UAV pilot, following this training. I want to thank Mrs. Dean and Mr. Bacon for encouraging me to participate, and Jim Rummer at Char-Em ISD for putting this training together and providing materials. We had amazing instructors from Northwestern Michigan College, led by Carl Rocheleau, NMC’s Chief Unmanned Aerial Systems Instructor. During our time together, we flew drones on a simulator, flew them in real life, and actually built and operated our own UAVs! I will have this model available to study throughout the school year, as well as a simulator that CharEm provided. I will have that simulator in my classroom, as well as another that I received a grant for from the Baiardi Family Foundation, Inc. Also included in this grant are kits to build UAVs in class this year. This means that students in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) will get experience designing, building, and actually flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles this year! I cannot tell you have excited I am to start the school year with these wonderful tools at our fingertips. UAVs will be a large part of our STEAM curriculum this year, as well as many other interesting topics, including forensics, trebuchets, and stomp rockets. In conclusion, I cannot wait for the school year to get started, so that we can get our hands on these wonderful tools. I again would like to thank the Baiardi Family Foundation, Inc, for their generous gift on behalf of Pellston STEAM. Sincerely, Chris Schlappi Sports Boosters As the school year soon approaches, that also means Pellston Sports is soon to start as well (although our volleyball games have already started)! We would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know what Sports Boosters is about and what we have been doing. Our group is proud to assist Pellston middle school and high school athletes and the various sports programs at our school. Although we do not fund Pellston Athletics we do offer support to the programs, including supplies/equipment, contribute to various projects Pellston Athletics may be involved in, running our concession stands and awarding scholarships to our athletes as they pursue their college education. We do not do many fund raisers, but we take pride in maintaining our concession stands and in turn using our funds to support our athletes and school. Over the past school year and into the 2016-2017 school year some of our purchases have included: banners (the visitor and cheer section banners), Hornet rug in the lobby, ice packs and tape for all our sports programs and donation to our athlete who competed in state final. In addition, we were able to award scholarships this spring to 3 of our graduating seniors. We have plans for financing more items for our gym and football concessions. If you're interested in helping Sports Boosters we are looking for volunteers to assist with concession stands and possibly other activities. If you are hardworking and able to multi task, honest, dependable, friendly and can provide service with a smile we would love to have you join our group. If you’re interested please contact the high school office/athletic director. | 10 Fall Sports Schedule Varsity Football 8/26 Fri Onaway Away 7:00 8/31 Wed Brimley Home 4:00 9/2 Fri Pickford Away 7:00 9/9 Fri Rudyard Home 7:00 9/16 Fri Engadine Away 7:00 9/23 Fri Cedarville Home 7:00 9/30 Fri Bellaire Home 7:00 10/8 Sat Camden Frontier Home 1:00 10/14 Fri Posen Away 7:00 10/21 Fri C.
