It’s December, can you believe it? Hopefully you
have all your Christmas shopping done by now.
If not, stay safe and don’t forget to keep your
house and car doors locked. Last month
there were 2 break and enters, 1 vehicle
was stolen, 4 vehicle were robbed from
and there were 4 cases of vandalism in various
locations around our community. The break
and enters, stolen vehicle and robberies
were all due to owners failing to lock up their
belongings. The vandalism cases were vehicle windows being
smashed. Let’s just avoid it all by remembering to lock our doors and
keeping valuables out of site.

“When they saw the star, they
rejoiced exceedingly with
great joy” (Matthew 2:10).
How bright the stars are this
time of year in the crisp cool
night air. Imagine looking up and
seeing that wondrous magical star
guiding the way to the King of all
Kings! Christmas is a time of sharing,
kindness and rejoicing. It is also a time
to remember those who are struggling. It’s
important to donate to our Christmas hamper (in support of
the St.Vincent de Paul Society), the Food Bank, or any number
of organizations helping out those who need an extra hand this
time of year. We’ve already received the greatest gift of all.
Who does not love to watch their little one on stage? The
much anticipated Christmas concerts will be held as follows –
seating is limited and on a first come basis.

South Bow River Community Action Group
Life by the Bow River
Two SBRCAG committee members met with three of the
“Calgary River Communities Action Group” (CRCAG) board
members to make them aware of SBRCAG’s existence and
concerns. They concurred with us on the limited mitigation
efforts being planned for the Bow River and explained that
although some diversion and holding areas had been considered
on the Bow River upstream of the TransAlta reservoirs, they
had been discarded due to their minimal collective impact on
flow rates. The consensus is that concrete mitigation results can
only be achieved through creating additional storage capacity
at TransAlta sites. They encouraged us to regularly write to the
ESRD Minister (Kyle Fawcett) and our MLA Ric McIver, asking for
the terms/status of the negotiations between the Province and
TransAlta and to further advocate for an agreement to be made
that involves more than just the Ghost Reservoir to protect Bow
River Communities.
Therefore, we ask you to act now:
Lobby TransAlta requesting sustainable measures that promote
watershed stewardship and increased life of the reservoirs which
is critical, not only for the continued operation of their business,
but also for the ability of the reservoir to hold back more water
during a flood. Contact:
As residents of the South Bow River Communities, we consider
ourselves very fortunate to live near the Bow River and to be
blessed with all the pleasures and opportunities it gives us to
recreate and enjoy. We want to ensure that this beautiful area is
always there for everyone’s pleasure.
As a follow-up to the article published in the July 2014 Bridges,
this is an update on our Groups progress.
For our Group to be more inclusive and provide representation
of all communities along the South Bow River, the group
previously known as the “Douglasdale/Glen Flood Mitigation
Group” has changed its ‘name. We are now known as “South
Bow River Communities Action Group “(SBRCAG).
The mission of the “South Bow River Communities Action
Group” is
“Support and promote flood mitigation initiatives that focus on
protecting Calgary’s South Bow River Communities.
SBRCAG has major concerns regarding the proposed flood
mitigation projects and how they could affect all downstream
South Bow River communities. Therefore, we have reached out
to other communities who also share our concerns and to date
have made contact with Inglewood, Deer Run, McKenzie Lake
and Cranston. It is our intention to meet with their community
representatives to discuss common concerns regarding flood
mitigation issues and determine how we can work together
to be heard. We have also been in contact with a Bowness
representative to learn from their experiences.
Presently, the SBRCAG committee is in the process of consulting
with technical experts to increase our knowledge of how each
proposed flood mitigation measure will affect the South Bow
River communities.

Hanging up stockings comes from the Dutch custom of leaving shoes out filled with hay for St Nicholas’s donkeys (Santa’s
Reindeer). He would leave small gifts in return.
If you received all of the gifts listed in “The Twelve Days of Christmas” song, you would receive 364 presents!

Richardson’s ground squirrels, commonly called gophers, fulfill a
very important role in the ecology of Alberta’s wildlife.
The Richardson’s ground squirrel is the most common ground
squirrel of the five species found in Alberta and they are the
favored prey of many native species on the prairie. For instance,
one species of raptor, the ferruginous hawk depends on the
Richardson’s ground squirrel for up to 80% of its diet.
In fact, the number of ground squirrels in a region can dictate,
how well and how often certain raptors will breed. Raptors
such as the Swanson’s hawk, red-tailed hawk, prairie falcon,
bald eagle and great horned owl also depend on the abundance
of these squirrels.
The Richardson’s ground squirrel is a burrowing rodent found
throughout most of the prairie and parkland regions of Alberta.
They are indeed squirrels that live on and in the ground rather
than trees. Ground squirrels belong in the same family as
tree squirrels, flying squirrels, chipmunks, prairie dogs, and
marmots.
Terrestrial animals such as the rattle snake, red fox, badger and
weasel, also rely on the availability of these little squirrels for a
food source.
Richardson’s ground squirrels are omnivores, eating grasses,
forbs, nuts and seeds. Typical adults are about 12 inches long.
They are dark brown on the upper side and tan underneath.
The tail is shorter and less bushy than other ground squirrels,
and the external ears are so short as to look more like holes in
the animal’s head. The tail is constantly trembling, so the animal
is sometimes called the “flickertail”.
Pg. 10 December 2014 Merry Christmas!
On window panes, the icy frost
Leaves feathered patters, crissed & crossed,
But in our house the Christmas tree
Is decorated festively
With tiny dots of coloured light
That cozy up this winter night.
Christmas songs, familiar, slow,
Play softly on the radio,
Pops and hisses from the fire
Whistle with the bells and choir.
Tomorrow's what I'm waiting for,
But I can wait a little more.
~ Anonymous
“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and
try to keep it all the year.”
- Charles Dickens
They spend the majority of their life underground and can
survive without food or water for periods exceeding 210 days.
In total, Richardson’s ground squirrels spend only about 15% of
their lifetime above ground.
Interestingly, their burrows provide important underground
refuge for many native species including burrowing owls and
bumblebees.
Although species such as bison and swift fox reached the
brink of extinction on the prairies as a result of human activity,
Richardson’s ground squirrels continue to survive in humanmodified habitats such as grazed pastures, edges of cultivated
fields and city parks.
Next time you are biking, hiking or walking by the Bow and get
a glimpse of a bald eagle perched up high on some old poplar or
red tailed hawk diving for his lunch you may just remember the
gopher and how he plays his part to keep our city just a little bit
country.

Winter
Wellness
Looking for ways to beat the winter
blues, bugs, and bulge? Many of my
patients come in seeking support for
any and all of these issues, so here are
a few of my favourites.
Eat with the seasons
This is roughly eating what is currently
being harvested (which isn’t much fresh
produce in the dead of Canadian winter!).
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fish and Food
in England did an interesting study on how
the nutrients in milk changed from summer
to winter, which aligned with those who
believe we can align our bodies with nature
by changing our diet throughout the year.
In fall, what is being harvested? The foods
growing slowly, and often underground.
Reach for carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips,
onion and garlic. Warm up with warming
spices like ginger, peppercorn and mustard.
Pg. 18 December 2014 In winter, turn more to animal meats,
especially beef. As with any diet, I believe
in tailoring it to meet your health goals.
Plenty of my patients with arthritis and
auto-immune disease cannot eat red meat
more than once or twice a month. Get
vegetables through warm soups rather than
salads.
Watch the comfort foods
The root vegetables in season carry
extra carbohydrates compared to other
vegetables, so portion control is important
to keep the waist line in check. It’s so
easy to overeat when a snowstorm has
you trapped indoors. On the same train
of thought, keep the exercise up. You will
need to be creative with where and how try a new class or have a dance party with
the kids.
Take care of your stress
and immune system
Immunity is suppressed by high stress, so
anything you can do for stress will help. As
stress mounts closer to Christmas, take
time out for stress management - yoga,
massage, or experimenting with essential
oils can do amazing things for de-stressing.
Probiotics add to your immune army, and
Vitamin D can be beneficial to both energy
levels and immunity. At the first sign of a
cold, I cut patients and family back on sugar
and dairy (also caffeine if relevant). We
start Echinacea tincture, and much to my
5-year-old’s displeasure, adding lots more
onion and thyme to recipes. Between
colds, I love Astragalus tincture or Reishi
mushroom to build up the immune system.
Contrast showers (alternating hot and
cold water) are amazing for stimulating the
metabolism and immune system.
Make changes today - procrastination
is the thief of health. How often have you
been in stress or down with a cold wishing
you could have made changes to prevent it?
Turn your awareness into action
and have your
healthiest winter
yet!

Hello!
My name is Miranda Lee. I’m a
born and raised Calgarian and mommy of
three little girls. I recently started a line
of baby clothing called Joined At The
Hip Babywear. The idea is that all of the
outfits are one piece but you would never
know it—they look like separates. A full
outfit, but it’s a onesie.
The idea came to me after my second
daughter was born. She basically lived in
jammies for the first few months of her
life. It was such a chaotic time—I never
seemed to get the laundry washed, folded
and put away. I was constantly rooting
through drawers, laundry baskets and the
dryer for tiny little pieces of clothing that
matched. I thought to myself there’s got
Pg. 21 December 2014 to be something as easy as PJs, but cute!
There wasn’t. So I got to work.
These outfits solve all the main complaints
about baby clothing. No onesie wedgie,
no tummy gap with a diaper hanging out,
and as my husband says, they’re daddyproof: everything is pre-matched so
there’s no guessing if plaid and polka dots
work together!
I’m also really excited to announce that
I’ve partnered with Save The Children, a
global charity that works in 120 countries
on various children’s issues, but also has
a strong focus on maternal, newborn
and child health (MNCH). This includes
providing health care to women during
their pregnancies and labours and helping
l
them take care of their babies once they
arrive. Joined At The Hip has committed
to donating $1 of every outfit sold to this
amazing organization.
Well, it took two and a half years to get to
the point where I actually have inventory,
but I’m finally up and running. So exciting!

boys and girls. You can find them

Skin appears red, but also turns white when pressed. It

abnormally low body
temperature – less than 34°C (as compared to normal body
temperature of about 37°C);
People suffering hypothermia may act inappropriately with
uncharacteristic stumbling, mumbling, and fumbling, as
their body temperature continues to lower;
Early recognition and prompt medical attention is crucial.
Left untreated, hypothermia may progress to coma and/
or death;
Call 9-1-1. Don’t forget to protect yourself from the
factors that originally lead to the patient’s situation;
Gentle re-warming should start as quickly as possible,
including: removal of wet, or constrictive clothing; covering
with blankets, or sleeping bags; and protecting the person
from further heat loss (wind, moisture and contact with
cold surfaces);
Dress in layers – it’s easier to remove layers, when warm,
rather than not having enough layers, when cold.
Having access to a survival/first-aid kit within your vehicle is also advised.

Black-Capped Chickadee
Adapted to Alberta Winters
Crossword Puzzle
Solution.
See Puzzle on Page 19.
Article by: J. Turner
The Black-Capped Chickadee
(Poecile atricapillus) is one of three
types of chickadees common to
Alberta. They have slightly different
but overlapping habitats so it can
sometimes be tricky to figure out
which type you are hearing or even
seeing. All chickadees are known for the
part of their song that gave this bird its
name – “chick-a-dee-dee-dee”. The Black-Capped Chickadee
is a small, non-migratory, North American songbird that shares
the coniferous forest with the other two types of chickadees, but
they are found in their greatest numbers year round in deciduous,
aspen forests and willow thickets. You’ll see them in pairs in the
spring and summer (times for breeding and raising of young) and
in small flocks (usually up to 12 individuals) in the fall and winter.
These birds can be quite bold around humans.
The Black-capped Chickadee has a black cap and bib with white
sides to the face. Its under parts are white with rusty brown on
the flanks. Its back is gray and the tail is normally slate-gray. This
bird has a short dark bill, short rounded wings, and a long tail.
It is 12 –15 cm long, wingspan is 16 –21 cm and it weighs only
9 –14 g. Both sexes look alike, but males are slightly larger and
longer than females. Their bodies rise and fall slightly during flight
and they have rapid wing beats; flight speed is about 20 km/h and
they can live for 6 to 12 years.
The Black-Capped Chickadee has the skills and a special ability
that makes it uniquely adapted to Alberta winters. It knows how
to find good roosting spots to shelter from the cold winter nights
(in holes in trees, dense evergreens or thick bushes). To keep
warm the chickadee stands up its soft, thick feathers to trap
warm air close to its body to serve as good insulation against the
cold. But more notable is its ability to drop its body temperature
at night by 6 to 10° C below its daytime body temperature,
allowing it to conserve energy (although it does take a while to
warm up and get going in the morning). Working to find food
to eat and store is of great benefit to the chickadee, as food
not needed for immediate activity is stored as body fat. This
fat provides energy that the chickadee needs to survive while
sleeping and fasting through the long, cold Alberta winter nights.
The foods (such as sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet) offered at
feeding stations in winter really help this little bird survive the
cold.
If you find an injured or orphaned chickadee or other wild bird
or animal, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation
Society for further instructions.
