A riparian zone is the configuration between land and river.
Riparian vegetation are plants that are located along the river
banks. Riparian zones are significant in ecology, environmental
management, and civil engineering because of their role in soil
conservation and the influence they have on animal and aquatic
systems, including grassland, woodland, wetland or even nonvegetative species.

The goals for the restoration project are to:

control smooth brome within balsam poplar stands to
allow ongoing growth of native shrubs, young balsam

Additional restoration goals for the future may include

Halloween Safety
Alberta Health Services EMS would like to
remind parents and trick-or-treaters of some
basic Halloween safety tips as October 31st
approaches. As a member of the UNICEF
Partners for Safety, ambulances, along with
police, fire, bylaw, transit, and Shaw Cable vehicles will be out
patrolling communities on Halloween night to provide a visible
safety resource for parents and trick-or-treaters.
Trick-or-Treaters
•
•
•
Remember: all regular pedestrian rules still apply. Be sure
to cross the road at marked cross walks or well lit corners
only. It is safest to work your way up one side of the street
and then cross once to the other side.
Stay away from houses that are not well lit and do not accept
rides from strangers or enter any home you feel is unsafe.
Let your parents know where you are going to be at all
times and advise them if you will be late returning.
Parents
•
•
•
Be certain that young trick-or-treaters are accompanied
by an adult. Older children should stay in groups of three
or more.
Pre-determine boundaries to trick-or-treat within and
establish a firm time to return home.
Advise children not to eat anything until they return home.
Dispose of any items that appear to have been tampered
with, or that are not properly wrapped.
Costumes
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Choose bright colored costumes that are highly visible.
Adding reflective tape to costumes further increases
visibility.
Consider sending your children with a flashlight for
additional safety and increased visibility.
When purchasing or making costumes, look for materials
and accessories that are labeled flame-resistant.
All costume accessories, such as sticks, rods or wands,
should be soft and flexible with no sharp edges.
Consider using hypoallergenic make-up kits instead of
masks that may impair vision or breathing.
Be sure costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm
clothing – but not so baggy or long they become a tripping
hazard. Costumes should not be longer than your child’s ankles.
Ensure your child is wearing adequate foot wear that takes
into consideration weather conditions and walking.

R.T. Alderman Middle School

Welcome back to school. I am excited to join the community as
the Principal of R.T. Alderman. As we work towards building a
strong community school, we look forward to working with our
neighbours to build strong relationships and integrate speakers
and supports that surround us. We hope to do a community
clean-up later in the fall and we are encouraging students to be
conscientious citizens as they travel to and from 7-11 and other
destinations.
We welcome the National Sports Academy Program to our
school this year. We have close to 40 students participating.
These students will train Monday to Thursday in their preferred
sport, and enter school in the second period. Currently the
sports offered are soccer, hockey and lacrosse. Our hope is
to expand this program throughout the year and work with
the National Sports Academy to include other sports. If your
child is involved in a sport and there is enough interest, we
can engage the NSA and work towards offering an Academy
training program.
At our welcome back barbecue, co-hosted with Maple Ridge
School, it was wonderful to see students, family members and
staff gather together. Through the annual Cake Walk, money
was raised for the Terry Fox Run and some participants won
tasty-looking desserts. Thank you to all of the volunteers.
For students in grade 8 and 9, we will be offering our bi-annual
trip in May 2012. This is an amazing opportunity to see and
explore Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City. Please contact
Mme. Bernard for further details at [email protected].
Again, thank you for your support of R.T. Alderman. I
encourage you to bring ideas forward and get involved in our
school. We welcome community volunteers and are looking for
coaches in the areas of Girls Basketball and Wrestling. We can
always use assistance with reading programs and if you have a
particular area of expertise that you could bring to the school,
please email Brenda English at [email protected].

Another school year has arrived and amid the excitement, we
celebrated our accomplishments, set new goals and discovered
a fantastic school spirit! École Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix planned
a welcome back picnic with hotdogs and drinks for everyone
where students and parents were able to meet the staff and get
reacquainted. An information evening for parents was also on
the docket.
Raising funds to build a new playground; conforming to current
City of Calgary regulations is still a very big focus for our
school this year! This new play area will provide a safe place
for children attending our school and those within the local
community to play and have fun. It is never too late to make a
contribution; be it time or money, corporate or private as we
are always looking for assistance in bettering our community!
If you are interested in helping out, please contact the school
at 403-271-5544 or email us at [email protected] . Any
monetary donation over $25 is eligible for a tax receipt.
École Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix is located at 809 Willingdon
Blvd SE. in the community of Willow Park. It is an elementary
francophone catholic school. We accept students from
all communities south of Glenmore Trail as well as the NE
quadrant of Calgary. Free bus transportation is provided. Our
website, www.ndp.cscfsa.ab.ca, will give you a great overview
of our school. Registration for the 2011/2012 school year is
on-going from Kindergarten to Grade 6. If you are interested in
joining our school please call us at 403-271-5544 or email us at

Our school is back to its rhythm, teeming with many activities,
new discoveries and never ending learning.
October is a very exciting month filled with a wonderful spirit
of sharing and thankfulness. Yet mystical October can be
somewhat scary toward the end of the month.
The Welcome Back BBQ was, as always, a great success. A big
thank you to our School Council who sponsored this wonderful
evening and thank you to all of you who helped with making
this event very successful and enjoyable for everyone. We also,
raised a great deal of money for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Do not forget to bring your beautiful smiles on October 6; it is
photo day! Please note that there will be no school on October
7 as this is an organizational day, and on October 10 due to the
Thanksgiving holiday. Please consider supporting our school by
attending the School Council meetings where working together
will make this school an even better place. The next meeting
will be held on October 13, at 6:30pm p.m., in
the Learning Commons. It is an educational
evening supported by our School Council.
More info to follow. We are continuing with Fun
Lunches this year and our first one is on October
20. The children will be enjoying a tasty and healthy
lunch organized by our fun lunches co-coordinators and
volunteers that will be helping out that day.
It has become a tradition in our school to go on a field
trip to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. This field
trip is always well received by our children and this year we are
going to see another great performance on October 26.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a very spooky Halloween.

Coffee Talk
Love to read? Want to make a difference?
Calgary Reads is an early literacy initiative changing the lives
of struggling grade 1 and 2 readers and their families in
Calgary and area schools. Literacy is important because it is
a fundamental life skill. Increased reading levels improve an
individual’s self-esteem, academic achievement, career and
parenting success. It results in increased quality of life. Literate
children have a greater chance of becoming competent,
contributing and engaged members of our society who are
economically self-sufficient.
Most reading problems are preventable with the application
of effective early intervention. Research indicates there is an
ideal window of opportunity between kindergarten and grade
2 in which a student’s basic literacy skills must be developed.
Children most at risk often require consistent individual
attention from trained adults, in addition to strong classroom
Calgary Reads @ School - In our core program, trained tutors
work primarily with struggling Grade 1 and 2 readers during
the school day, using a specific framework. Tutors spend 40
minutes per session with one student, at least twice a week, for
32 sessions (about 4 months). In our ESL4ELL program, tutors
support English language learners who are learning English as
a second language. These tutors spend 40 minutes per session
with one student for 10 sessions, delivered at least once weekly.

Opportunity to Identify
Remains Offers Closure to Pet Owners
The abundance of cats and dogs lost
in Calgary each year often leaves
pet owners frantically searching
for their missing family members.
Unfortunately, many of these
cases are left unresolved and pet
owners can be left with unanswered
questions. Through a new joint
program with Calgary Roads, The
City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw
Services is responding to the needs of pet owners who are
hoping to bring closure to the loss of their pets by identifying
cats and dogs killed on city streets.
Under this new program, Calgary Roads will deliver the remains
of any cat or dog killed on our streets to the Animal Services
Centre. Animal Health Technologists will search for a licence
tag, readable microchip or legible tattoo and notify the owner.
The location, date, time and reference number, along with
any distinguishing features of all recovered animal remains will
be listed under the impounded animals section of calgary.ca/
animalservices. All cat or dog remains will be held for 10 days at
the Animal Services Centre. If a positive identification is made,
the owner will be contacted and given a choice to have Animal
&Bylaw Services cremate the remains without the retention
of ashes at no cost or to make arrangements for private
cremation at the owner’s cost. All unclaimed pet remains will
be cremated after 10 days.
In 2011, Calgary Roads picked up 483 deceased cats, compared
to 46 dogs. Cat owners can help reduce the number of cats
killed on Calgary’s streets each year by keeping their cats
safely indoors. Under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw
(23M2006), cats are not allowed to roam off their owners’
property. Likewise, cat owners must license their cats. We
recommend they also provide permanent identification, such
as a microchip or tattoo, so a cat can be easily identified and
reunited with his owner if lost. Responsible pet ownership
provides peace of mind. Let’s work together to keep the
animals we love and care for healthy and secure!

Coffee Talk
Paws For Thought
By Dr. Beth Cozens
Cat’s Eye
Although our feline friends seem to develop fewer eye diseases
than our canine companions, there are still several important
eye conditions to be aware of. Knowing what is considered
normal and when to have your pet seen by a veterinarian can
be important in preventing loss of vision and, in extreme cases,
even loss of the eye.
Some eye positions in cats which appear abnormal can actually
be completely normal depending on the breed. Strabismus
is the medical term for having crossed eyes or a crossed eye.
Nystagmus is the medical term for an eye or eyes which move
up and down, side to side or round and round on their own.
Strabismus or nystagmus can be seen either alone or together
in certain breeds of cats including Siamese, Himalayan breeds
and albino cats. If these conditions are present since birth they
are usually harmless and no treatment is needed. However, if a
cat who has had normal eye placement throughout life develops
strabismus or nystagmus it can be an indication of a severe ear
infection or a disease process occurring in the brain.
A corneal ulcer is the medical term for a scratch or abrasion
on the surface of the eye called the cornea. Corneal ulcers
are very painful and may cause your cat to squint and hold
the affected eye closed. To diagnose a corneal ulcer a special
eye stain called fluorescein is applied to the surface of the
eye. The fluorescein stain will only stick to the middle layers
of the cornea but will wash away from a normal intact corneal
surface. If this stain stays bright green in a spot on your cat’s
eye this means a corneal ulcer is present. In any animal, corneal
ulcers can be caused by a scratch by another animal or any
other foreign body rubbing across the cornea. Treatment for
corneal ulcers usually involves antibiotic eye-drops and pain
medications. The risk of not treating a corneal ulcer is that the
lesion can become infected and in severe cases may begin to
“melt” and be unable to heal.
In cats corneal ulcers can also be caused by a common virus
called Feline Herpes Virus. This virus can lead to “melting”
ulcers or ulcers that refuse to heal. Cats who are infected
with the Feline Herpes Virus may have recurrent episodes of
sneezing, decreased appetite and energy, fever and recurrent
corneal ulcers. The virus is unlikely to be completely cleared
from the infected cat’s system and can become inactive and be
re-triggered during periods of stress. This virus can be easily
transmitted via coughing, sneezing or saliva from cat to cat.
Fortunately, we are able to vaccinate against the Feline Herpes
Pg. 23 October 2011
279-8747
Virus. Although no vaccine can guarantee 100% protection,
proper annual vaccinations are the best chance to help
prevent transmission of this virus.
Cat nails can be very dangerous to the structure of the eye.
Because cat nails are curved and shaped like small hooks, a
cat scratch can cause serious injury if a nail becomes hooked
in an eye. Superficial eye scratches are likely to result in a
corneal ulcer and infection may occur depending on how dirty
the cat’s nail was. If you ever see a thick, viscous, clear fluid
coming from what looks like a puncture wound in your cat’s
eye, consider this an emergency and have your cat seen by
a veterinarian as soon as possible. As with dogs, any foreign
body that is penetrating and stuck in an eye should be LEFT
IN PLACE and your cat should be taken to a veterinarian
immediately!!
Cat’s can be very difficult when it comes to prying their eyes
open to fully examine them. If you ever notice an ocular
discharge that is green or thick and white in colour, if your
cat is squinting an eye firmly shut or you suspect an injury has
occurred to an eye, call your veterinarian immediately.

what we do !
“Pain Therapy Sessions”
Although our 2011 season came to a close at
the end of June, organizers are already preparing for the next season. As a
league, we are in desperate need for
2 or 3 League Organizers to begin
training over the fall. The current group
of League Organizers will be leaving after
the 2012 season and as such, it is crucial that we
find the next group to begin shadowing in order to take over
for the 2013 season.
Top 5 Reasons to keep Timbit Soccer in our community:
1. Douglasdaleglen was one of the first communities to offer
Timbit Soccer in Calgary
2. We are one of the few clubs in Calgary that offers U4
soccer – most begin at U6
3. We are one of the few non-competitive, “grassroots” clubs
left in south Calgary
4. If our field space is not renewed, it will be given to other
groups and will be nearly impossible to get it back
5. The DGCA Membership required to play provides
operating revenue for the Community Association
Douglasdale Timbit Soccer is a well organized, well run,

Frisbee Fling
Last month my office held a community event
called the Frisbee Fling. Some of those
reading this article may have attended,
and for that, I thank you.
Overall the event was a success.
We were able to raise the issue of
the importance of a Community
Association and the impact it has on
the residents in the community, as well as the need for a strong
membership base.
We had hoped to cap the event off with a Guinness World
Record for the ‘most Frisbees launched simultaneously’;
however, we did fall short of that goal.
We required 854 people to break the current record, but did
not have enough in attendance to attempt that record. Instead,
we had a Plan B that would hopefully leave everyone involved
in the day with the potential of know that they contributed to a
successful Guinness World Record.
Our Plan B was to have the World’s Largest Paper Ball Fight.
There currently was not record established in the category and
with more than 100 people hurling paper balls at each other for
one minute, we unofficially set a record.

As well, this event, just as everything that occurs within
a Community Association, the support of volunteers was
paramount to the success of the Frisbee Fling. I thank you all for
your time and effort.
All proceeds that were collected through this event were
donated back to the participating community Associations.
We are in the process, at the time of writing this article, of
accounting for the final number of what was raised. Those
funds will go back to support your volunteer run Community
Association.
New Sessions of Council
With Council gearing up and going back in to session, many
issues will be brought forward that affect you, the residents
of Ward 12. I will endeavour to keep you up to date on the
happenings in Council through this newsletter, as well as on
my blog. I encourage you to visit Shanekeating.blogspot.com
often to find out what is happening in, and outside, of Council
Chambers.
There is video on my blog of the attempt, and we are in the
process of compiling all of the required information to submit
to Guinness to have the record verified.
Some very special thanks go out to those who sponsored cash
and items to the event:

Hot Dog
Mummies
Ingredients
•1 11-ounce can of refrigerator
breadsticks
•1 12-pack of hot dogs
Instructions
For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use
kitchen shears or a knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create
two thinner strips.
Wrap one strip at a time snugly around
the hot dog. Depending on the size of
the hot dog, you may not need all of both
strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog
exposed for the face area and continue
wrapping the top of the hot dog.
Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet
at 350º for 15 to 18 minutes or until
the breadstick wrapping is golden
brown.
Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes.
Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies

Small Business Community Advertising Ideas
These days, businesses must be seen and heard by a potential customer at least 7 to 14 times before they “Think
of YOU!” when requiring your services and/or product/s.
Rule of thumb - if one specific advertising mean is generating enough business...you’re very lucky. Statistics state
that businesses need to be in several advertising venues/
media to get the phone to start ringing. As well, if you can
manage it in this economy, at least 10% of yearly revenue
should be put aside for advertising. Realistically, it’s hard
to determine what works and what does not. However,
the following list will hopefully help your small business get
a good start. Always remember, your advertising concept
and design, as well as timing, etc. are all key to your success also. Here’s a list of relatively inexpensive advertising
ideas for you to consider within Calgary communities:
Official Community Newsletters (of course).
Besides display and classified ads, these newsletters also
often offer special advertising features showcasing
particular businesses – all powerful small business advertising opportunities. They also may
be delivered to exactly the audience you want
to reach since it’s the newsletter community
residents read first.
Direct mail. Direct mail can be very effective small business
advertising – and is much more favourably received than other
direct marketing media, such as email or telemarketing...it also
compliments the official newsletters since they are delivered right
to your prospective customers’ door as well.
Vehicle advertising. The reason you see so many vehicles
emblazoned with advertising is that it works; vehicle advertising
is very visible small business advertising. If you’re not ready for
custom graphics or a magnet quad sign that sit atop your vehicle,
go for a magnetic sign that you can take off when you want.
Bench/bus stop advertising. Looking to reach a mass audience? Then transit advertising may be the best advertising idea
for you. Contact your local transit company for information on
bench, bus and shelter advertising possibilities.
Sending promos with invoices. Little advertising ideas can
be powerful, too. If you’re sending out an invoice, why not take
the opportunity to include some small business advertising? To
draw new customers, try something such as a “bring-a-friend”
promotion.
