From a genuine tourist trap addict
By Yvonne Stegall • [email protected]; 810-433-6792
Ever since I was a kid and my parents took me to my first tourist trap, I have
been addicted. I make it a point to return to my favorite roadside attraction destinations at least once every three years. Some of them change, and some of them
never change. The only thing that makes me sad are the ones that go away — like

odd attractions.
Dinosaur Gardens — This prehistoric zoo is located at 11160 US Highway
23 S, in Ossineke. Enjoy a walk through the
woods where there are giant monstrous dinosaur replicas, and many mosquitoes. The
earliest photo I have found of this awesome
destination was when I was about 5 years
old — probably the first time I went there.

• Cross in the Woods

sculpture located in Indian

• Castle Rock — A castleshaped rock jutting out
over the roadside in St.
Ignace.
• Mystery Hill — Another
mystery spot, this one is
located in Onsted.

ATTRACTIONS
Continued from Page 1B
Not only are the dinosaurs fun to look at
(and touch), Dinosaur Gardens offers a wide
array of fun items inside their gift shop.
Call of the Wild Museum
For those who do not appreciate taxidermied wildlife, Call of the Wild Museum at
850 S. Wisconsin Ave. in Gaylord is not
the destination to visit. According to their
website, Call of the Wild opened in May
1965 by Carl and Hattie Johnson and is
now operated by their three children. It is
an educational exhibit filled with critters
and history. Each animal display shares
information about their habitat, feeding and
mating patterns, and more. While most of
the animals are displayed behind glass, there
is one room where kids can actually touch
a deer, a bear and even a skunk.
Sea Shell City
One of the most comical, and somewhat
less impressive attractions Michigan boasts
is the “Man Killing Giant Clam,” located at
Sea Shell City. The clam is a crusty white
bivalve (long dead) covered in plastic seaweed. This one is an interesting place to stop
once, but the attraction is one that has never
called me back. Sea Shell City is mainly a
gift shop filled with shells, none of which

comes from Michigan.
If you have the time and energy to make
a trek across the bridge, St. Ignace offers
a bunch of great roadside attractions,
including these three:
Mystery Spot
Mystery Spot, at 150 Martin Lake Road
in St. Ignace, is not the only place of its
kind, but it is strategically located in an area
populated with other roadside attractions.

The story behind this stop is that in the
early 1950s, three surveyors named Clarence, Fred and McCray came from California to explore the Upper Peninsula. They
stumbled across an area of land where their

did not seem to work

While I have only
been to this one once, it was not my first
mystery spot, nor will it likely be my last.
The best part? Sitting in a chair that
is balanced only with its back legs on a
small leg against a wall!
Weird Michigan Wax Museum
One of my weirdest discoveries when
visiting the Upper Peninsula was the
Weird Michigan Wax Museum at Martin
Lake Rd. & US 2 in St. Ignace. It is home
to some of the strangest wax figures ever,
including The Snake Princess of Belle
Isle and The King of Beaver Island. Each
exhibit has some relation to myth, or fact,
in Michigan’s own strange history.
While this is only a taste of the wonderful
oddities in our great state of Michigan, it
is surely a list that will get you on the road
to find your own beloved tourist traps to
visit every few years and share with your
children.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF PROPOSED
ZONING ORDINANCE AMENDMENT
A Great Home-Builder’s
Opportunity
At their meeting of August 4, 2014 the Fenton Township Board conducted the first
reading of a proposed Zoning Ordinance amendment to revise the provisions and
conditions of a previously approved Planned Unit Development (PUD) for parcels
06-33-400-030, 06-33-400-031 & 06-33-400-032 (formerly 06-33-400-026), which are
located on Vicinia Way, (near the intersection of Owen Road and Jennings Road).
We have a subdivision in Fenton ready to build…
Just pull the building permits and go to work. Street, and all
underground utilities (sanitary and storm sewers, water,
electrical, gas, phone) are in and approved. 44 total lots for
single-family homes. We even have sample floor plans to fit
the building envelopes. You could call this a turn-key building
project. You will be dealing directly with the owner.
Excellent Price and Unbelievable Terms!
Can’t get better than a no-interest contract.
A packet is ready to be sent to you.
Call this number for more details and make arrangements
to get the packet and to see the project.
The second reading of the proposed Zoning Ordinance amendment will be conducted at the August 18, 2014 Fenton Township Board meeting.
A complete copy of the proposed ordinance may be obtained at the office of the Fenton Township Clerk, 12060 Mantawauka Drive, Fenton, MI 48430. The proposed ordinance is also available on Fenton Township’s website at www.fentontownship.org.

CITY OF LINDEN
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED
IMPROVEMENTS TO BYRAM LAKE
www.tctimes.com
Class of 2027
The Linden City Council will hold a public hearing in the Council Chambers on the
lower level of the Mill Building at 201 N. Main Street, Linden, Michigan on Monday,
August 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. to hear citizen’s comments on continuation of the
Byram Lake Improvement Project. The project will be financed by a special assessment district which includes all properties in the city within 500 feet of Byram Lake
which abut the lake. A copy of plans and cost estimates for the project are on file
with the City Clerk.
Treat your Kindergartner to a special
message of love and congratulations on
the Tri-County Times special
Kindergartners page!
For a small cost your Kindergartner will get
a big thrill and long term keepsake!
Your message will be published in the
Sunday, August 24th edition.
The current aquatic plant control program on Byram Lake is scheduled to end this
year. It is proposed to continue the project through 2019 with a combination of
herbicide treatments, mechanical harvesting for aquatic plant control and continued water quality monitoring to gauge the effectiveness of the project. Estimated
project costs for the proposed project 2015 through 2019 are:
Improvement
Aquatic Plant Control (Herbicide Treatments/Mechanical Harvesting)
Aquatic Plant Control Coordination/Field Evaluations
Water Quality Monitoring
Administration and Contingency
Total
Mail the completed form below to :
Class of 2027
Cost
$27,000

$40,000
In order to ensure assessments levied are proportionate to the benefit derived from
the project, it is proposed that lot size be considered when determining individual
assessments. Under this plan, a “unit” assessment would be levied against lots
with a mean lot width of 300 feet or less. Lots greater than 300 feet in width would
be assessed two units in the proposed Byram Lake special assessment district.
This equates to a unit assessment of $264.90 per year for 5 years.
Any person wishing to comment may do so in person or in writing by addressing
written comments to Lynn M. Henry, City Clerk, at P.O. Box 507, 132 E. Broad Street,
Linden, Michigan, 48451.

PLAN 10-404
The Palmary is a colonial-style home with traditional detailing. Its symmetrical central section
has all the right touches, from the arched and
columned entry porch, to shuttered multipaned
windows and attic dormers.
Inside, the layout is a comfortable blend of
classic styling and contemporary amenities,
starting with the elegant curved staircase that
sweeps up the left side of the lofty two-story
foyer. Move past it to step through an arch into a
bright living room with a wide masonry hearth.

in a plastic bag and pour in the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours or
overnight.
2. Remove the steak from the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to grilling and remove
