SEARCH COMMITTEE
REPORT TO THE
CONGREGATION ON PURIM!
also concerned over the fact that he comes from Iraq.
They were hoping to find a Galitsianer, and were willing
to settle, if necessary, for a Litvak, but the members
of the committee were very reluctant to hire an Iraqi,
since we were not sure how he would fit in. And there
are some unconfirmed rumors that he disagreed with
his father over religious matters, that he had an affair
with his wife’s maid and that he tested his child beyond
limits. The committee has decided to check these
rumors out before inviting him here for a Shabbat. The
decision to postpone inviting him was made by a vote
of 300 to143 with seven abstentions.
The next candidate was a man named Jacob.
This man evidently also came well recommended
but the committee was concerned over the fact that
he had four wives, twelve sons, and a daughter. The
committee asked: Where will he be able to find housing
for a family this big in the Delray area? And what kind
of a salary will he demand with a family this size? And
there are some rumors about him too---that he had
some difficulty getting along with his brother and that he
has a son who is a flashy dresser. The committee will
check these rumors out carefully and let you know what
happens. The vote to delay deciding whether to invite
him or not was 300 to 142 with eight abstentions.
The next candidate was a man named Moses, who
seemed very promising when we first read his resume.
He has had lots of administrative experience, and has
demonstrated real leadership, even though he only
entered the rabbinate as a second career at the age of
eighty. We had high hopes that he would be the one,
but when we interviewed him over the telephone, it
turned out that he has a speech defect, and so he would
certainly not be able to give sermons here at Anshe
Shalom. After all, our members are used to the kind of
sermons that keep them up at night—because when
they sleep during the day, they can’t sleep at night. Not
only that, but we heard a rumor that he is wanted by
the police in Egypt in connection with the murder of an
Egyptian taskmaster. And so the committee turned him
down by a vote of 349 to 142 with nine abstentions. As
you can see, we are getting closer to a consensus with
every vote.
The latest candidate for the position of rabbi at
Anshe Shalom is the messiah. The committee was
really impressed by his resume. He seems perfect, and
we have heard that congregations all over the world
are interested in him, and waiting to talk to him, and
so we were really hoping that he would be the one for
our synagogue. But we were turned off by the fact that
he did not show up for the interview. Can you imagine
if we had a committee meeting, and we had no idea
when he was going to show up on time or not? One
thing is certain: If we do hire him to be the rabbi of our
By Rabbi Purim Dreamer, Secretary
The Search Committee, under the leadership of
Paul Burpstein has been working night and day in
order to find the perfect rabbi for our congregation. We
asked the committee to give us an update on how the
search is going for the readers of this Purim issue of
the Kol Anshei Shalom, and this is what they told us:
The chairman felt that he did not want to have too
big a committee since that would be inefficient, and so
he has limited the committee to only those people who
are learned, pious, intelligent, and modest. So far, he
has carefully chosen four hundred and fifty members of
Temple Anshe Shalom who meet all these criteria.
The committee began its deliberations by
determining the kind of rabbi that we feel would be right
for Anshe Shalom. After much discussion, we decided
that we want a rabbi who will bring in the youth while
devoting all of his time to the old. We want a rabbi who
will be active in the general community while being
available at all times in his office. We want someone
young who has many years of experience. And above
all, we are looking for a strong rabbi who will take
orders.
With these criteria in mind, we began interviewing
candidates. Since Anshe Shalom is a traditional
synagogue, we thought we would begin by considering
applicants who came from the Bible. Some of them
seemed quite promising, but in each case we found
some flaw, and since we want the rabbi of our synagogue
to be flawless, we have rejected them.
The first candidate we interviewed was a man
named Noah. He came with good references from God
Himself, who told us that he was really outstanding in his
generation, and a genuine tsadik, and that, after having
had experience dealing with wild animals, dealing with
the board would be easy for him, and so we were very
hopeful that he would be the one. However, we found
out that he had a drinking problem, and he came to
the interview smelling like someone who lives in a zoo,
and so the committee rejected him by a vote of 350 to
l45—with five abstentions.
The next candidate was a man named Abraham. He
too came with very good references. He had done very
well in business, and had some military experience as
well. But some of the members of the committee were
concerned about his age. Even though you are no longer
allowed to ask a candidate his age, the rumors are that
he was well up into his seventies when he changed
careers and entered the rabbinate. Our committee was

Temple Anshei Shalom is another strong
link in the chain of our spiritual history and
we owe it all to its founders and the countless
dedicated people who ensured its survival as a
vibrant, forward looking bastion of Conservative
Judaism in greater Delray Beach.
Kudos to our esteemed Gala honorees:
President Emeritus Paul A. Felder and
immediate past President Larry Feinberg. Your
tireless efforts on behalf of our Temple has
transformed and propelled it to become one of
the finest Conservative synagogues in south

(Exodus 25-8)
The narrative of the book of Exodus weaves
a dramatic saga that climaxes at the foothills
of Mount Sinai where the newly freed nation of
Israel enters into a covenant with God; the Ten
commandments are delivered by Moses and
the entire nations exclaims: “Naase Venishma”
all that God has spoken we will hear and fulfill.
After the life-altering experience of standing at
Sinai, how does one keep the feeling of Sinai
present? It can be maintained with sacred
deeds, daily acts of justice and compassion as
outlined in the text following the Pact at Sinai.
It can be accomplished by maintaining the
observance of sacred time such as Shabbat
and Holy Days. Or it can be maintained with
sacred space, fashioning a physical site to the
presence of God in the midst of the community.
Typically, the Torah and later Jewish usage will
blend all three modes – sacred deeds, space,
and time – into an integral way of life. The
ultimate goal is to break through the barriers
and come into the presence of God. But that
goal is not attained in an instant. There is a
ladder of spiral ascent moving from the study
of Torah to the performance of the mitzvot to
bonding with God.
Mount Sinai does not retain its holiness after
the Israelites moved on. It does not become
a site of pilgrimage. The mountain is not holy;
God is holy and God’s presence is what makes
a place holy. When the people leave Sinai, they
do not leave God. God accompanies them on
their journey, and the tabernacle is a symbol of
that. The later Temples, built by in Jerusalem
by Solomon and later by the Jews returning
from Babylonia, did not follow the plan given by
Moses in the desert. Different generations built

The author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and Shanghai Girls has garnered international
acclaim for her great skill at rendering the intricate relationships of women and the complex meeting of history and
fate. Now comes Lisa See’s highly anticipated new novel, China Dolls.
It’s 1938 in San Francisco: a world’s fair is preparing to open on Treasure Island, a war is brewing overseas, and
the city is alive with possibilities. Grace, Helen, and Ruby, three young women from very different backgrounds,
meet by chance at the exclusive and glamorous Forbidden City nightclub. Grace Lee, an American-born Chinese
girl, has fled the Midwest with nothing but heartache, talent, and a pair of dancing shoes. Helen Fong lives with
her extended family in Chinatown, where her traditional parents insist that she guard her reputation like a piece of
jade. The stunning Ruby Tom challenges the boundaries of convention at every turn with her defiant attitude and
no-holds-barred ambition.
The girls become fast friends, relying on one another through unexpected challenges and shifting fortunes. When
their dark secrets are exposed and the invisible thread of fate binds them even tighter, they find the strength and
resilience to reach for their dreams. But after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, paranoia and suspicion threaten
to destroy their lives, and a shocking act of betrayal changes everything.

As I See It
returning to what was 900 years ago.
TAS is proud to say, we are moving forward. However, the world appears to want to
move backwards. Europe is tired, rightfully so,
of feeling guilty for its part in the Shoah. The way
forward is to change attitudes, not repeat past
actions. A Yudenrein Europe in the 21st century
is OK? Would you believe? This is not moving
forward. Assauging one’s guilt by attacking the
very people who suffered their abuses does no
one any good or produce a positive outcome.
One has to wonder: What are they thinking? Try this on for a theory: ISIS is against Jews/
Israel. If we “finish” the job against the Jews , ISIS
will leave the rest alone. Here’s the echo: If Britain and France allow us to take Czechoslavakia,
we will leave them (the British and French) alone.
We all remember how well that worked out. If
this is a post-national age, then what difference
would it make if one calls himself, French, Muslim
, Dane or whatever? A world of difference is what
I would venture to say.
No one country has been able to replicate
the American system. It has sustained us and
worked for us until very recently. It is time to revisit what we did that was so successful and go
back to that model. We were and are special. We
can take pride without being obnoxious. Many
years ago, Herman Wouk wrote an interesting
book, Inside, Outside which dealt with this issue.
His thesis was we can be American on the outside and remain Jews at home. We can substitute
any nationality to be the inside persona. We who
were initially part of the Multicultural education
push 25 years ago thought to unite the disparate
elements of society. Somewhere along the line
we got high-jacked and need to revisit the issue.
The bottom line is to assimilate everyone into the
core nationality, recognizing the changing character of the country to non-white, non-Christian
and yet still maintain the core principles of being
American. The new immigrant is coming for the
same reasons our fore-parents had. Let’s give
each other a chance and make it work. Welcome
the newcomer, but with the understanding he
becomes part of the greatest social experiment
ever.
By Barbara Grau
Madison Avenue tries to sell us on a piece
of Jewelry as the gift that keeps on giving. Buying a Bond, Israeli or otherwise, is also a gift
that keeps on giving. Add to this category a new
(like we really got over the old) anti-Semitism.
Cloaked as anti-Zionism or anti-Israel or any
assortments of excuses, it is still in the words
of Msg Edward Flannery (Anguish of the Jews)
the longest running hatred in human history.
Because it had lain dormant for a few years,
the talking heads have missed or ignored the
signs of a resurgent anti-Semitism, disguised for
years as anti-Israel or anti-Zionism. The gloves
are off, the calendar and clock have been set
back at least 70 years and some are shocked
SHOCKED I say! For forty-two years we have
enjoyed a period of relative calm vis-à-vis antiSemitism. Genocide had, more or less, made
anti-Semitism socially unacceptable, which is a
good thing. The downside is our grandchildren
have never felt the insidious effect of it and are
slow to pick up on its manifestations. Easier to
disguise it as anti -Zionist or evil Israel doing
cruel things to Palestinians. This generation is
well past the hay day of Russian communism,
Viet-Nam, Korea. Theirs is a rosier world view,
Sesame Street and We Are the World.
With the 70th anniversary of the liberation
of Auschwitz, the contrast between our reaction
and theirs is stark. We might as well be talking
about the Punic Wars, Crusades or Inquisition.
Indeed we even hear our president use the Crusades as a moral equivalent to ISIS. Even if this
were true and that’s stretching it, the question
remains, do we want to return to 1096 (Crusades)
or the 1400’s (Inquisition)? Those who know their
history know that the Crusades were called to
get the noblemen out of Europe because their
constant fighting between each other was tearing up the land, preventing the serfs from reaping the harvest. The Crusaders killed everyone
who looked different from them on their way to
Jerusalem. Progress is not accomplished by

To all the Sisterhood Ladies who come on
Friday mornings to cut cakes and put them on
trays for our Oneg Shabbats and Kiddishes-----Thank you!
Also my many thank you’s to Ida Brass and
Marianna Gluck for cutting and putting out the
fish every Simcha Shabbat with assistance
from Florence Ull.
We now have some new ladies to help
Nachama Lewin, who sets everything up
on Saturday morning, they are: Judy Danto,
Barbara Rosenthal, and Jackie Cohen and
Hella Reitman. These ladies do a great job.
I would also like to say a special Thank You
to my husband, Ed, for all his help to me on
Friday nights for the Onegs and helping out on
Saturday mornings too.
At Eternal Light Memorial Gardens and
Community Mausoleum, our caring and
dedicated staff will assure your loved
one a place of lasting beauty for eternity.
A very special Thank you to Marshall Engell,
Ruth Ann Ruggiero, Rita Manning and Bob
Rothman for scooping the salads into little
cups for Simcha Shabbat.
Whether you select a site in our dignified
mausoleum or in our picturesque lakeside
gardens, you can rely on us to make your
final act of love all that you want it to be.

Usher on Shabbat, please contact the Temple Office
and leave your contact number. Your assistance
would be very much appreciated.
We extend our best wishes to all our members
and friends for a freiliach Pesach.
Shalom,
Barbara Kirshner and Harriet DeCosta
“The Seders are coming! The Seders are
coming!” No, Paul Revere did not shout this through
the Colonies. However, we know Passover is coming
(every year) and with that comes cleaning, replacing,
pulling out or pulling down, etc. It means family and
friends. It means celebration and it means inviting
people to your table who would otherwise be alone.
It also means remembering the less fortunate and
contributing to The George Ehrlich Maot Hittim
Fund, a.k.a. The Matzoh Fund. Last year, we had 48
boxes delivered. This year, with your help, we hope
to add more needed deliveries. Please remember,
while you are preparing for this lovely holiday, your
gift allows others, who might not be able to do for
themselves, a Passover meal.
If you are attending the Temple’s Seders,
you will be delighted to know that Cantor Sapir and
Rabbi Reimer will be conducting both Seders! If
you wish to attend this wonderful service and dinner,
contact the Ticket Office. Although we are not doing
the cooking for the evening, there is still a lot of
work being done by Florence Ull and Rita Erstein
Thank you, in advance, for taking the reservations
and arranging the table seating and helping to make
everything look effortless.
We are happy to tell you that we have a new
Bikur Cholim Fund. This will allow the committee
to continue its good work. In addition to calling or
visiting our members who are ill, we reach out to
those in need; who are alone or who just need a
call. We are able to provide a grieving family with
assistance or arrange a meal, if necessary.
If you know of someone who needs us, please
contact Karan at 561-400-9798. This information
will remain private. If you want to add someone
to the MiSheberach List, please contact Karan or
the Temple Office. This will generate a call from
the Bekur Cholim Committee to the person or their
family and keep us up to date on his/her health.
If you are one of our “snow-bird” members,
and are getting ready to travel back north, we wish
you a safe trip and healthy return. If you plan to be
back for the High Holidays, remember to pay your
dues before you leave and purchase and secure
your seats as soon as you get the annual letter
from the Finance Department. With the wonderful
increase of our membership, the High Holiday seats
are in demand.

MEMBERSHIP
With season in full bloom, the membership
committee is working diligently to make all our
new members welcome into our congregational
family. We encourage our members to involve
themselves both spirituality and socially, to
become more active in our daily Jewish life and
learning.
Friday March 13th we invite you to “Bring-AFriend” Shabbat. Share the warmth of welcoming
in Shabbos with Cantor Sapir and our TAS choir.
Enjoy our socialable Oneg after services.
Wednesday, March 18th at 7:00 PM is
“Anshei After Dark.” Enjoy an evening with “2
Guys”, Alan Scharf and Roy Conners - both from
the 1960’s folk singing group “The Highwaymen”.
They had a string of Number One hits and multimillion- selling records, including..”Michael”
(Row the Boat Ashore), Cottonfields and Gypsy
Rover. Tell your friends to join us for an evening
of wonderful entertainment and an opportunity to
meet afterwards with our Membership committee
to learn more about our Temple family.
Ruth Kurtz (499-3607) assigns the English
readings from the Bima and she would welcome
all those who wish to read on Shabbos. If you
can sing Ashrei, she would be so happy to have
you lead our congregation in song. Just let her
know that you would like to be part of Shabbath
services.
I like to think of us as friendly..but more
importantly we are a caring, considerate
congregational community.
On Shabbos if
someone is sitting in the seat you normally sit
it...please don’t ask them to move...sit in another
seat. Unless you slept here the night before the
seat is not yours!!! Seats are reserved only on the
High Holidays. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Help us make everyone who comes to Shabbat morning services feel welcome. We
are now bringing in larger crowds on Shabbat morning and we need you to help us.
We do not have “reserved seats” except on the High Holidays. If you come in and
find someone sitting where you usually sit, why not wish them a SHABBAT SHALOM
and then just go and find another seat nearby. Services can be heard from anywhere
in the Sanctuary.
