Sunday’s Sermon
This week we come to a beloved and well-known text in this little book of Ephesians. It
is Paul’s powerful prayer and glorious doxology for the young church in Ephesus.
We will spend three weeks on this text.
This week begin preparing for worship by prayerfully reading Ephesians 3:14-21. I
encourage you to read this text over many times. Meditate on this text. For this week,
pay special attention to verses 14-16. We will be focusing more on the general issue
of prayer than on the specifics of this prayer.
Verses 14-16 tell us a lot about what caused Paul to pray. As you read them, what do
you see that fuels Paul’s prayers? What causes him to pray? What is his motivation?
What does he hope to accomplish? What is his desired outcome? Why does he stop
here to pray? Ask the Lord to give you insight into the prayer life of Paul.
And, of course, how silly would it be to think deeply about prayer and then fail to pray.
Stop and pray for this Sunday. Pray that we will gather to be informed by the truth SO
THAT we can leave the church and be faithful with the truth entrusted to us.

One Day
VERSE 1
Rock and tree and sky and wave
Call out our Creator’s praise
Mountain peak and turning leaf
Reveal Your wonder
But we who have the most to say
Often hide our praise away
We confess with thankfulness, You our Savior
CHORUS
One day ev’ry knee will bow,
One day ev’ry soul cry out,
“Holy, Holy Lord!”
So let us raise our voices now
And bring the song of Heaven down
“Holy, Holy Lord!”
VERSE 2
Hear the saints and angels song,
We were made to sing along,
Let it soar to Heaven’s door for Your glory!
Let the song of the redeemed
Rise up as an offering;
Take our hearts, all we are, into Your story!
And Can It Be
VERSE 1
And can it be that I should gain,
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love, how can it be
That Thou my God should die for me?
VERSE 2
He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race;
‘Tis mercy all, immense and fee;
O praise my God, it reaches me!
VERSE 3
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth and followed Thee
VERSE 3
No condemnation, now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head
And clothed in righteousness divine
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown thro’ Christ my own!

Truth: The book of Ephesians is divided into two major sections. Chapters 1-3 focus on doctrine, and
chapters 4-6 focus on the duty that comes out of this doctrine. Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians comes at the
end of chapter 3, dividing these sections. Thus, Paul teaches us that in order to have the power to act upon
the truths we know about God, we need the power of the Spirit that comes through prayer.
Response: In order to live in obedience to the call of Christ, we need the constant daily filling of the Spirit
through prayer. There is no power without it.
Truth: Our prayers are fueled by the truth of God’s Word. A life that is not grounded in the consistent study
and knowledge of the Word cannot be a life that is consistent and effective in prayer.
Response: After spending time in the Word, spend time praying for yourself, your family, your friends, and
your church based upon the truth of the Word.
Truth: Our prayers are fueled by the need for God’s Spirit. We cannot be like Christ or accomplish the
purposes of Christ without being filled with the Spirit of Christ.
Response: Instead of just praying for specific things you want God to do, pray that God will fill you with the
power of His Spirit in order that you can be the kind of person and do the kind of things that are necessary to
accomplish His purposes.
Truth: Our prayers are fueled by God’s character. Prayer begins in an intimate relationship with God and it
grows out of an increasing intimacy with God
Response: Don’t just seek to be better at prayer; seek to know and love God more. Don’t just seek more
discipline—seek Him.
