Meeting. Shem Tov, meaning “good name,” is given to a volunteer who
demonstrates a depth, breadth and diversity of service that sets an
example others can aspire to.

NAMING GOD
A Pre-High Holy Day
Conversation
Rabbi Barry Cytron,
Adath Senior Scholar
September 17, 24 and October 1
9:15-10:15 AM
Barbra Streisand, at the request of
Israel’s illustrious Shimon Peres, sang
this famous prayer at his retirement
celebration. Every Rosh Hashanah, we
joyously stand and sing its mighty
refrain. But most of us no longer
relate positively to images of royalty;
victims of parental abuse note the
problem of assuming a benevolent
father; and feminists have long objected to masculine language for God.
Cindy meets that high threshold through her extraordinary service to
the Congregation. Her fellow congregants describe her as “caring,” and “always willing
to listen.” Others have said, “her word is her bond,” and she is “willing to help when
others will not.”
Cindy has volunteered in Adult Education, as a Shabbat Morning usher and with the
Congregational Nurse Program, but her most significant contribution comes as
co-administrator of the Chevra Kavod Hamet, Adath’s Society to Honor the
Deceased.
Cindy has sat with fellow congregants at their time of greatest need, when a loved one
has passed away. She is a passionate advocate for the important work the Chevra does,
recruiting new volunteers by sharing her personal stories of providing service and
comfort. Additionally, Cindy has handled many administrative Chevra tasks, including
updating Chevra documents and compiling them into a complete, easy-to-use resource.
Recently, Cindy added sewing the tachrichim (a traditional white burial shroud) to her
list of volunteer projects.
In her spare time, Cindy works with the Jewish Singles Group, holds a leadership role
in Hadassah, is active in professional medical social work groups and loves to garden.
Mazal Tov Cindy on this well-deserved honor.
Join us for three Shabbat morning
discussions as we explore the
questions raised by this powerful and
central theme of our Machzor. Rabbi
Lawrence Hoffman’s latest volume
in the Prayers of Awe series will serve
as our main resource. There is no
charge and everyone is welcome.

WORD FROM OUR CLERGY
WHO’S WHO
What's in a song? A reflection on the worship experience and its music.
Traditional prayers, English translations, and poetic interpretations of the prayers
all make up a liturgical service. The rabbis or I may provide divrei tefilla
(explanations and interpretations of the prayers). We may also provide Kavanot which are intentions we set for ourselves and the congregation to bring meaning
and personal connection to a prayer. For instance, before reciting the prayer
Modim Anachnu Lach, which speaks of miracles that are with us daily, we may ask
everyone to reflect on daily miracles in their lives, or to visualize something they
are deeply grateful for. In this way we bring the Modim prayer to life and bring
meaning and a spiritual connection to our worship.
All of these ways of reflecting on and bringing meaning to prayer are helpful, but the medium that I
believe has the greatest power to uplift and connect is the music of the service. This is why it's so
important to select music that is beautiful, accessible and reflects the particular mood of the prayer
in question, whether celebratory or somber. Music may reflect the mood on a given Shabbat or
reflect current events in the community or in the world. Each Jewish holiday may also dictate the
choice of music. There are upbeat, rousing melodies for the Hallel service for festivals (filled with
Psalms of praise) and somber, reflective music for Yizkor services when we remember loved ones.
Beyond the general tone of a prayer, and the appropriate music to convey that tone, there is also
a musical concept that can be described as word painting. This is where the skill and training of a
Hazzan especially comes into play. As an example, those of you who may have been present during
the early part of a Shabbat service have on occasion heard me pause dramatically during the Kedusha
of the Shacharit Amida. This pause comes after the word "mechakim" – which describes how we wait
for God's presence to be with us, expressing the longing for peace, comfort and love in Zion and in
the world. It also represents an intimate level of waiting for God in our own lives. I in turn pause
and wait to literally paint the text of this prayer. If you pay close attention to the words of prayer
you may notice other times when a Hazzan raises his or her voice or lingers on a particular note
or passage to paint the words of prayer with a musical paint brush. This is the art of the cantor to choose carefully among the various types of music, to balance a service and express the ebbs
and flows of the liturgy and the moods of the congregation. We choose a variety of melodies for
connection and community singing as well as more complex music for cantor and perhaps choir
and accompaniment.
Music, the universal language, is the perfect vehicle for expressing the many moods and devotions of
the heart. Soon we will begin a new Jewish year. May it be filled with melodies to inspire and uplift
the soul, allowing us to connect through song and feel the presence of God and gratitude for the
miracles that are with us daily. There is no better way to express that gratitude than through song.

WORD FROM OUR BOARD
The new Development and Fundraising Committee has been busy
working hard and planning new and creative ways to help support all
of the amazing programs at Adath. As you’ll soon be hearing, the 2016
L’Chaim Campaign is kicking into high gear to achieve our $300,000
goal. Thanks to the leadership of L’Chaim Campaign Chair Debra
Altschuler and dozens of volunteers, we know it’s possible and hope
everyone will do their part to achieve this goal. When you hear from
one of these dedicated L’Chaim callers, please give generously!
The other exciting news, as you’ll see later in this issue of the Clarion,
is the incredible benefit being planned for May 11, 2017, with the very talented Potash
Twins. Adeev and Ezra Potash are rising stars in the jazz world and are beloved by many
of our own Adath youth, who know the “Twin Horns of Joy” from Herzl Camp and
USY. A committee chaired by Scot, Julie, and Emily Ziessman is putting together an
evening to remember for all ages. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details!
As you can see, the foundation laid by my predecessors is bearing fruit, and I consider
myself and Adath to be so fortunate to have Evan Stern, our wise-beyond-his-years new
Development Director, doing the great work he’s already done. As we start to think of
the Yamim Nora’im ahead, we look forward to your generous support of Adath’s
mission. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your
summer.

International Women’s League President and Debbie Goldich,
International Torah Fund Vice President. Mark down the date!
Time goes by fast!
NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT
As we continue with the Women’s League theme of Nat’ah
Karem, “She plants a vineyard,” I encourage you to consider what
the symbolic vineyard means to you. How will the fruits be your
legacy – will you be involved in making the world a better place;
will you create something beautiful and spiritual; will you make
life-long friends as a result of your involvement?
When you complete your Women’s League membership survey,
give some thought to this “vineyard.” Let us know what interests
you and how you want to contribute to making Women’s League
successful.
I hope you enjoy the rest of our Minnesota summer and that you
mark your calendars to attend the first two Women’s League
events. September 18 is the Member Appreciation brunch with a
presentation of “Happy Feet” from Schuler Shoes. On October
9, David Schultz will speak on the upcoming elections and the
political atmosphere.
Check out our website (http://www.adathjeshurun.org/womensleague), the Chadashot and the Clarion for information regarding
future events from Women’s League. I encourage you to become an integral part of our T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone
Achieves More!)

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
ADATH FOUNDATION...at 30
Yad Sima Tova’s Silent Partner:
the Adath Jeshurun Foundation
led by co-Chairs Sue Kane and Sari Lederman, in the spirit of
loving kindness (Gemilut Hasadim).
Yad Sima Tova was formed in 2003 to provide a community
approach to strengthening health and wellness and spirituality
to members of Adath Jeshurun Congregation. As Adath’s outreach caring community, Yad Sima Tova reaches out to the
congregation’s members and families who need assistance in
times of need.
While many devote their time and energy to Adath’s outreach
caring community, others in our congregation support Yad Sima
Tova with financial resources. The Congregational Nurse who is
part of Yad Sima Tova has been generously funded by Marc and
Julie Kozberg. Yad Sima Tova also receives support from the
Susan Himmelman Shapiro Fund of the Jewish Community
Foundation. And two permanent funds of the Adath Jeshurun
Foundation also support Yad Sima Tova: The Helen and Mike
Sandler Fund and the Gisell and Richie Wien Family
Fund.
Yad Sima Tova’s wide-ranging activities include meals on wheels,
transportation on Shabbat and holidays for those congregants
who no longer drive, visits and companionship, healing services,
bank and bill management, spiritual and religious outreach, reminder calls for upcoming yahrzeits, and bereavement comfort.
In its bereavement comfort capacity, each fall Yad Sima Tova
partners with the Adath Jeshurun Foundation to send yahrzeit
candles and soothing notes to those who have lost loved ones
over the previous year. Yad Sima Tova and the Adath Jeshurun
Foundation strive to make the High Holidays a little less difficult
for the recently bereaved.
“Thank you for the thoughtfulness you have shown me at this
time of loss in my family,” wrote one recipient of Yad Sima
Tova’s High Holiday mailing. “I received in the mail the yahrzeit
candle and note. Our synagogue shows caring and support in
many directions to many people for many different reasons. It is
helpful to know that we can and do reach out to one another.”
And reach out to one another we do – the overwhelming majority of Yad Sima Tova’s activities are carried out by volunteers,
ave the Date
Permanent funds of the Adath Jeshurun Foundation are more
than a beautiful lasting legacy; they become philanthropic focal
points for the moments in our lives when we are inspired to
give. Since Gisell Wien’s retirement in 2013, Gisell and her
husband Richie have made numerous donations to their
family fund. To support the sacred work of Yad Sima Tova,
consider creating a permanent fund of the Adath Jeshurun
Foundation, or make a gift of any amount to the Sandler or
Wien Funds.
Yad Sima Tova has many volunteer needs. To get involved,
please contact Sue Kane at 763.546.7135, Sari Lederman at
612.508.8259 or Rabbis’ Associate Jim Sherman at
952.215.3909. Questions about the Adath Jeshurun Foundation
or the creation of a permanent fund? Contact Development
Director Evan Stern at 952.215.3916 or [email protected].
