ANNUAL YARD SALE FUNDRAISER
First, Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked the annual Senior Center
Yard Sale Fundraiser. You made this a great success. These volunteers work so
hard out there in the heat to bring a well put together presentation for buyers. Also,
thank you to everyone who donated to this sale. We had many great items donated
and this makes for a successful fundraiser. To all of you wonderful buyers who go
above and beyond with your offers on items, we thank each and every one of you
for supporting this fundraiser and we look forward to seeing you all again next
year!
THE COUNTRY BOUTIQUE
If you haven't seen our new and improved Country Boutique please stop by and
enjoy the updates. We have a wonderful new volunteer re-designing the shop. I
think you will be pleasantly surprised at how the items are being showcased now.
We have definitely moved out of the “Cubby Hole” realm as it use to be called and
are moving into “Boutique” status. There are many consignees offering upscale
jewelry, glass bird feeders, blankets, and beautiful dishware. Come check us out!

September News From The Senior Center…
Hello Friends!
September….already? As usual it is a busy place around here! We
are gearing up for National Senior Center Month and we will be
highlighting all month what we do here all year long! If you have a
friend that has never been here this is a great time to invite them
out for some fun activities and some lunch!
We will be having our annual 90th Birthday Party again this year on September 7. Steve Troyer will be the entertainment for the day. He is wonderful, so put on your dancing shoes and
join the party!
The 16th is going to be a busy but fun day! On September 16 Joyce Capen will be doing an
“Art & Appetizer” class. Joyce will teach you how to make a beautiful painting using an old
credit card as a brush! This class size will be limited so you will want to call and sign up for it
right away in order to assure you get a spot! Also on the 16th we will have 50 Shades of Jazz
with Don Mekkes & Kevin Roe. Their musical talent is amazing, so don’t forget to mark it on
your calendars because you won’t want to miss them!
We will be having an “End of Summer Music in the Pavilion Picnic” on Wednesday
September 21. Mark & Mark will provide the music that day!
Check out the flyer for the date and times of our “Flu Clinic.” You want to make sure you get
your shots before you head out for the winter! Speaking of heading out for the winter, if you
go south or west or someplace warm for the winter please call Jackie at (231)972-2884 to
stop your newsletter for the winter (bulk mail does not get forwarded). This will help us save
some on postage.
It is that time of year that we are participating in the Mecosta County Community
Foundation annual fundraiser for non-profits. This year they have changed the name to
“Philanthropy Day 2016” (Match Day). We are always happy to be involved in this fundraiser
as it raises awareness of our area seniors and the needs they might have. So look for the
flyers for our various fundraising projects!
There is so much going on and I have only touched on a few things, so please read your
Keyhole cover to cover! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on a great opportunity to enrich
your lives. I am inviting all of you to come out to the Senior Center, have some lunch and
share some laughs. Hope to see you soon!
~Beth~
Ps….just a note that the kids are back in school! Let’s keep them safe by watching for them as they wait for their
buses!

Happy Grandparents Day!
Sunday, Sept. 11
In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian
Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign
to set aside a special day just for Grandparents.
Through concerted efforts on the part of civic,
business, church, and political leaders, this
campaign expanded statewide.
The first
Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in
West Virginia. Also in 1973, a Grandparents Day
resolution was introduced in the United States
Senate. The resolution languished in
c o m m i t t e e .
Mrs. McQuade and her team
turned to the media to garner
support. They also began contacting
governors, senators, congressmen in
every state. In 1978, five years after
its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday
after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was
signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September
was chosen for the holiday, to signify the "autumn
y e a r s "
o f
l i f e . )
Today this event, begun by only a few, is
observed by millions throughout the United
States. A native of Fayette County, Marian
McQuade and her husband Joe are the parents
of 15 children. They have 40 grandchildren and
many great grandchildren.
Grandparents Day is a family day. Schools,
churches, and senior organizations honor
grandparents with special events. Some families
celebrate by holding a family reunion. For those
who entertain large groups, it can be fun to have a
story-telling time, allowing grandparents to relate
stories of their past, enlightening children about
" the old days."
As Grandparents Day approaches, help
children and/or grandchildren to identify and date
all photos in old family albums. Many happy
memories can be derived from this.
Everyone can be involved in the
observance of this day - it’s a time to
discover one's roots and learn
p at ie nc e, un de r standing an d
appreciation for the seniors. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to
enhance communication between the
generations. Special talents, such
as cooking, sculpting or quilting can
be passed on to those who display
an interest. Old family music, songs
and dances, along with their meanings and origins, are important in maintaining a strong sense
of family background. Together, re-construct a
family tree, giving children the opportunity to learn
the ancestral line of their family.
Many times, only grandparents have answers
to questions about family histories. When this
information is passed down to the grandchildren,
everyone can be assured of their heritage being
preserved.

Wow! Summer sure flew by! I hope you had a great
time. But, now it’s time to get ready for fall. All you
home maintenance members remember, I have workers waiting to help you. They can put summer furniture
away, rake leaves, clear gutters, and close up summer
cottages. If you are not a member, now may be the perfect time to join. The purpose of this service is to provide residents of Mecosta County, age 55 or older, affordable assistance with minor home maintenance and
repairs. Please call Jo Ann at 231-972-2884 if you are
interested in becoming a member.
Fall, for me is a time of reflection. It’s when I make
sure my “affairs” are in order. This year, something
happened to someone else that made me look at things
differently. Due to an unexpected stay in the hospital
for a local resident it was brought to my attention by a
volunteer for ARC (Animal Rescue Center) that we
should have a plan for our pets. Especially seniors who
live alone and rely on their pets for companionship.
We should make sure we have a family member,
friend, or neighbor ready to step in and care for our
pets. You should be ready to board your pet if you do
not have someone to take care of them. Fortunately we
were able to find someone to care for his pet while he
was away from home.
As part of getting our affairs in order we should have a
document that includes our pets. It should contain a
description of each pet, their vet contact information,
and any important medical notes. The ARC does not
board pets but if you wish to surrender your pet they
will take it in and adopt it out for you. They will make
sure your pet goes to a loving caring home.

Laughter is the Best Medicine
Whoever said, “Laughter is the best medicine” wasn’t joking. That pun was intended. I have been
commissioned to continue this page - for awhile - and although I laugh at jokes many times a day, I would love
your humorous contributions. Jokes - Riddles- Sayings: Bring them on! Continue to drop them off at the Senior
Center to Dawn Ketchum’s attention or email them to [email protected]
A woman walked into the veterinary clinic wanting to have
her cat and it’s six kittens spayed and neutered.
“Is the mother friendly?” the vet asked.
“Very,” said the woman, casting an eye on all the pet
carriers. “That’s how we got into this mess in the first place.”
Bifocals are God’s way of saying, “Keep your chin up.”
Do you ever wonder...
Why do we say something is out of whack?
What is a whack?
Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same
thing?
Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game" when we are
already there?

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were going camping. They
pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and
said: "Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you
see."
Watson replied: "I see millions and millions of stars."
Holmes said: "And what do you deduce from that?"
Watson replied: "Well, if there are millions of stars, and if
even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are
some planets like Earth out there. And if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life."
And Holmes said: "Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody
stole our tent."
PUZZLE ANSWERS
And while we’re on the subject...
Why are they called "stands" when they are made for
sitting?
Why is it called "after dark" When it really is "after light"?
Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?
Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?
Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?
A woman meant to call a record store, but dialed the wrong
number and got a private home instead.
“Do you have Eyes of Blue and A Love Supreme,” she asked
who she thought was a store clerk.
“Well, no,” answered the puzzled homeowner, “but I have a
wife and eleven children.”
“Is that a record,” she inquired.
“I don’t think so,” replied the man, “but it’s as close as I want
to get.

A priest was walking down the street one day when he
noticed a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a
house across the street. However, the boy was too small
and the doorbell too high for him to reach. The priest
walked up behind the little fellow and gave the doorbell a
solid ring, then asked the child, “And now what, my little
Man?” To which the boy replied, “Now we run.”
