Message from the President
Dear students, it is a momentous event, because it marks
the end of one milestone in your lives. Years at UoH were
special, because they helped you to become the individuals
you are today.
I believe that you have developed determination, selfconfidence, purposefulness and commitment. I can state
this clearly: the UoH and its dedicated staff helped you to
become the individuals you are now.
Dr. Abdi H. Gass
President, University of Hargeisa
I believe you are graduating, feeling deep satisfaction. You
worked a great deal, and your efforts gave you more than
just a college degree. It gave you skills, knowledge and
invaluable experience. Staff at UoH challenged you with
the enormous tasks, stating that their subject is the most
important and the only one that can be used in your future
careers.
Well, I should say this is true. I believe you can hardly remember a book or a project that you can call unnecessary today. The
UoH environment was like the model of a caring society in a miniature form. There were ups and downs, but now you are
ready for the world waiting for you outside the UoH walls.
You know, sometimes I believe you felt frustrated, because it was difficult enough. You have been through everything:
sleepless nights, fatigue and even disappointment about the chaos in the university. However, those were, in part, transient
emotions evoked by much studying and lack of rest sometimes. Getting a college education at the UoH has been a challenge.
Many times you thought of giving up; but those were only the thoughts, because you cannot imagine your life without that
precious experience, knowledge and skills obtained from your time at UoH. You must be proud of yourself because you were
strong enough to overcome all the obstacles and succeed. You obtained true satisfaction from getting new knowledge and
becoming someone greater than just a student.
You were excellent students. Maybe, your grades were not always perfect, but you knew it for yourself that you were excellent
students who can cope with any task and solve any problem. You did your best to get as much from your education at UoH.
This was your victory over the challenges you faced on your way. If you could do this, any future student at UoH can do it, too.
You know that deans, teaching staff, administrative staff, board, and others are not the only factors of your success.
Much depends on you. Great desire, enthusiasm and striving for academic success contribute to your academic achievements.
Thus, I believe you understood that no one but you can bring you to the top. Academic environment and people are important
factors, but not the only. By the way, there can be quality and somewhat sufficient resources at UoH. The teaching staff and
other support staff are wonderful at UoH, and you will remember the days of your studying here as the most valuable and
quality years of your life.
Thus, I cannot describe your happiness and enjoyment today, when you are graduating with degrees. It is not about getting the
degree only that demonstrates your status. It is rather satisfaction from having the material evidence of your precious
experience gained in the years at UoH.
I am confident that you will do your best to demonstrate to the outside world that UoH graduates are the best.
Thank you

New Registration System:
In this academic year of 2012/2013 there was a huge
change for the UoH Registration process.
All administrative staff gathered the University’s main hall
to make the registration process easier. An identification

for the first time using a plastic Card printer.

Message from the Director of Institute
Of Peace & Conflict studies
The Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) was
established at the University of Hargeisa in January, 2008,
as a product of a joint initiative between the University of
Hargeisa and Eastern Mennonite University in the United
States. This initiative is funded by the United States Agency
for International Development (USAID) through Higher
Education for Development (HED). The institute is also a
partner with the United Nations University for Peace
(www.upeace.org) in Costa Rica, which provided training for
some of its faculty members at its headquarter in San Jose,
Costa Rica. Since 2011 the IPCS is run by University of
Hargsiesa (UoH) because the Institute shifted from Donor
support to local funds of the UoH.
Adem Haji Ali Ahmed
Director of IPCS
IPCS is the first institute that focuses on studies and
academic research in the areas of peace and conflict within
the entire Somali-speaking community in the Horn of Africa.
IPCS was born from the need to address, in depth, the
conflict and violence that has engulfed the horn Africa
region to contribute to a lasting peace.
The IPCS’s core mission is to research and teach indigenous techniques for conflict resolution while
complementing this local knowledge with modern conflict resolution methodologies. Promoting a culture of
peace and tolerance, not as moral principle but as way of life, the institute is committed to educating and
training core groups within the society—including but not limited to traditional leaders, policy makers,
members of the Somaliland house of elders (Guurti) and parliament, and other members of civil society, to
become principle actors in promoting peace and human rights.
The first cohort of 33 students graduated in 2010. A further 45 students graduated 2011 and a third cohort of
32 students graduated in March 2012. 60 new students joined in this year, 2012 as fourth cohort of the
Institute. They came from different walks of the life, including; Parliamentarian, political parties, ministers, and
workers of local Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) as well as some of the staff of International
Organizations stationed in Somaliland.
Thanks for those who supported the IPCS during its establishment period and still the Institute needs a support.
So, we will welcome with open hands with every actor which is ready to give a hand to our Institute because it
will be an investment for humanity and survival of the human being. Peace is the key for everything and
without peace there will not be any development.

Message from the Dean Faculty
of Economics
On behalf of all the staff of the Faculty
and myself, it gives me a great pleasure
and honor to say congratulations and to
pass my heartfelt message to the
2011/2012 graduates of the Faculty of
Economics on this remarkable event in
your lives.
Omer Y ousuf Buh
Dean, Faculty of Economics
You have reached this special day through many ups and downs and you should
expect too such a cycle to continue in the future for the fact that “Learning curve” is
continuous. Being a citizen of a poor country, evidenced by the deficiencies in many
socio-economic indicators, a lot is expected from you to contribute in bringing about
changes in different aspects by applying the knowledge, skill and attitude that you
have acquired in the University.
The role of education is central in the development of any economy and you should
always note that you belong to the very small percentage of the well educated civil
servants on whom the people and the country depend. We are highly confident that
you will make a difference in the development efforts of the country by working
with full commitment.
Congratulations, once again! We wish you all the best in your future career.

Message from the Dean Faculty
of Medicine & Surgery
Since its inception in 2003/2004 academic year, the
Faculty has come a long way to help realise the
aspirations enshrined within the spirit of the
mission and vision of the University of Hargeisa.
Sixty doctors have thus far graduated from it in
four batches.
The last batch graduated in
September 2012. I was fortunate to have become
the Dean of the Faculty just before the graduation
ceremony.
I am honored to have been involved medical
education at different universities.
Prof. Hassan Ismail Yusuf,
Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery
MD, MPH, McomH
These home-grown qualified doctors are now providing vital health care services to large
communities in Somaliland which have not had the privilege to have access to basic and vital health
care service before. They work and have had the experience of working in remote regions and
districts in the land. Moreover, some of them are now acting as assistant lecturers in the same
faculty.
I commend the services of local lecturers and visiting foreign instructors & supporting agencies to
help us in our endeavour to produce competent, skilled and world-standard medical professionals
to address the health care needs of our nation.
At present, there are 224 students studying at the faculty at different levels of years of learning.
It’s my commitment to make every effort to take the quality of teaching and learning process a step
further. I’ll make concerted efforts to explore possibilities of further training for lecturers in the
shape of short-term or long-term courses. Continuing medical education will be a priority in this
The quality of the product (doctor) will mainly depend on the work put into it (quality of teaching).
I’m determined to ensure that this is the case.
It gives me pride to continue to serve my country in medical education.

With diverse sacrifices, you have started the long journey of the legal profession
empowered with jurisprudence.
Now, you are expected to honestly serve justice, in due process and as per the
principles of the rule of law. As justice is the foundation of peace, security and
stability; as it is the pillar of unity and the engine that boosts development, your
honest service of justice has multidimensional positive effects.
World history has proven that failure to promote justice caused and is causing
dissatisfaction, frustration, aggression and thereby resulting in conflicts, disputes
and wars.
Good luck and I hope with lots of love.

Message from the Dean Faculty
of Education
Osman Esse Awaleh
Dean, Faculty of Education
Since the fall of the Somali Republic and
regain of the Somaliland Republic its
independence in 1991 this is the first batch
that has professionally trained as qualified
teachers to graduate from the Faculty of
Education in University of Hargiesa. These
girls have endured successfully to complete
a two-year intensive Diploma course of
Education majoring in Bio-Chemistry. As a
matter of fact, in spite of the acute
shortage of qualified trained teachers in all
our schools, this batch will have special
significance and an additional credit to the
gender- balance of secondary schools
teaching population.
I would like to extend my sincere congratulations on your wonderful success; however, I
would like to remind you that, this is not the end of the tunnel of education; it is just a
beginning of your torch to the life-long learning, hopefully you will continue your
education to become “reading teachers.” On the other hand, you have worked hard and
because aware of the deficiencies in the field of education. You are expected to contribute
a lot in bringing a change to our children in various aspects by applying the knowledge,
the methods, the techniques, the skill, and the attitudes that you have acquired.
May I also express my appreciation to the staff of the Faculty of Education for their sincere
commitment and the wonderful contribution to make this programme successful.
Finally, once again on behalf of the staff, I wish all the graduates a success in future
endeavor.

Xinjir habacle gamas haadhayiyo dherega heemaashi
Habheeb diidka hanadkii ahaa huq iyo ciil raaga
Hubka dhiga ninkii odhan jiree baajin jiray hoogga
Hagarlaawe kii tirin jiree hiifi jiray dhiillo
Hor ilaahay ina xaashibaan tebi halkiisii.
Jahli huursan maankuu hantiyey hudur ku maahmaahye
Aqoon hawrtay cilmigoo hir galay garasho heer gaadhay
Hindisaha tacliintuu ahaa himiladeediiye
Hayinkii barbaartuu ahaa lama hilmaamaane
Hal-adayga dhaaxuu na baray hogo tuskiisii.
Nin hankiisu hayb haybta naco habar-wac beenaadka
Nin hadhkiisa loo wada sinnaa haan kastana soora
Haaweyda caydha ah ninkaan haynta ku yasaynin
Hungurigu hadduu duulal hoday xaasha’ ka hufnaaye
Gobanimo hab-dhaqan buu lahaa hadaf an liicayn.
Ma hilmaanto geeridu qof nool waana la hubaaye
Rabbuun baa hadhaayee naflaha hilinkan loo jeexye
Inay dunidu hoosiis tahaan hadal ka taagnayne
Hantideenu waa maro cadoo huwato yoomkaase
Hayeeshee naftuun baa didaye hoyey abwaankiiye
Haradii fardawsaad rabboow ha ka harraadsiinin
Hogga iyo su,aashii qabriga ha ka habaabsiinin
Allahayoow adaa hodanahoo hebel u baahnayne
Naxariista waa u heellanyee holac ha taabsiinin
