It’s very hard to pick a single
building, because collectively,
the architecture of Edinburgh
is pretty extraordinary. There
are lots of natural vantage
points, like ➍ Calton Hill,
the Castle, and even Princess

Where do relax after the

We are really lucky to have
some amazing walks in the
city. There is nothing like
climbing Arthur’s Seat, or
spotting herons near the Water
of Leith to clear the head.
Which galleries and
museums do you really
like to visit?
We have an amazing array of
galleries in the city, everything from major national
collections, like the ➌ Scottish
National Gallery (The Mound),
to leading contemporary
art spaces like Fruitmarket

Shanghai
Explore the modern
face of Chinese
fashion and culture
Insider Judy Hua
Judy Hua established her
haute couture label Judy
Hua Studio in 2004. Since
then it has been impossible
to imagine the Shanghai
fashion scene without her.
Hua is also fond of culture
and philosophy and tries to
explore varied disciplines
through fashion.
What do you show design,
fashion and photography
fans first in Shanghai?
The M50 Creative Park (50
Moganshan Road), because
there are plenty of good
galleries, great artists’ studios
and you can also buy the most
beautiful art objects there.
➋ Shangart Gallery is my personal favourite. The gallery
helps a lot of contemporary
Chinese artists get started and
build a clientele.
Which neighbourhood is up
and coming right now?
I think the Huaihai Road in
Shanghai really is getting
more and more beautiful.
There are more than four
retail stores or shopping malls
which opened just last year,
such as the K11, IAPM and the
Lane Crawford.

Which Chinese designer do
you like most?
I like so many ancient
Chinese designers – those
who lived hundreds of years
ago. Chinese designers who
worked for the imperial family
are never named in history
books. They spent their
lives designing one kind of
product, like a jade sculpture
or a teapot, and tried to make
them absolutely perfect.
Those products are extremely
valuable right now.
Where in Shanghai would
you take pictures?
The many little streets around
the Huangpu River are
beautiful and the landscape
is amazing. They are on the
Bund – all kinds of buildings
are located there.
Where does the art community meet for a drink?
That would be at the Rock
Bund, which is located at the
Bund of Shanghai (20 Huqiu
Road). There are a lot of coffee
shops and Italian restaurants
there. My favourite coffee shop
is the Lyceum Café (185 Yuan
Where do you love to eat
in Shanghai?
I love the beef and fish dishes
at the Kee Club (796 Huaihai

Tiandi Yijia (No. 6 Shandong
Yilu), because they cook some
of the best traditional Chinese

food. They also have a wonderful view of the Bund and
the ➌ Huangpu River.
Where do you go after
dinner for a night out?
I would stay at the Kee Club
(796 Huaihai Middle Road);
they have great parties.
➍
➌
Which hotel would you
recommend to a friend who
is visiting?
Definitely the ➍ Waterhouse
Hotel (1-3 Maojiayuan Road)
– a very cool place. They use
a lot of grey tones and raw
cement in the building. It’s
very simple and yet very cool.
And where do you go
for a good breakfast?
Again the Waterhouse is my
favourite place, I can highly
recommend it because you
can enjoy a good breakfast,
the sun and the view over the
Huangpu River.

Ming Yuan Road). The Rock
Bund is also a fashion landmark: extremely luxurious
brands have chosen to hold
their fashion shows there.
What’s new in Shanghai?
There are some new art and
fashion exhibitions which
I find interesting. Two private art museums have
opened which I particularly
like. One is called Long
Museum at the West Bund
(3398 Longteng Avenue) and
➊ the other is the Yuz Museum
(35 Fenggu Lu). The owners
are Chinese and they collect a
lot of contemporary Chinese
art and sculptures from all
over the world.

this culturally rich archipelago. Lamu Town, on Lamu
Island, was designated a
UNESCO World Heritage site
in 2001 and looks much as it
did 200 years ago. Donkeys
are the main means of
transport on land, while traditional dhows are the best
way to get around on water.
Settle into the slow pace of
island life, enjoy the many
empty beaches and soak up
the local hospitality.
Thailand
Koh Samet
Part of a national park, Koh Samet requires
visitors to pay an entry fee but offers plenty
in return: the most sunshine in Thailand, 14
palm-fringed beaches, tea trees and tranquillity. Its proximity to Bangkok has made Koh
Samet popular with domestic travellers looking
for a quick getaway from the Thai capital, but
shady trails skirting the coastline make it easy
to explore the island’s less visited corners.

Isle of Skye
No two days are the
same on Texel, Vlieland,
Terschelling, Ameland and
Schiermonnikoog. In the
Wadden Sea (a UNESCO World
Heritage site since 2009),
the ebb and flow of the tide
creates a shifting patchwork
of gullies, channels and
sandy shoals. This landscape
provides a unique habitat for
more than 10,000 often rare
plant and animal species.
Characterised by dramatic
scenery and often swirling
mist, the largest of the
Inner Hebrides islands
is a mysterious and
breath-taking place. The
rugged terrain, dotted
with rust-coloured Highland cattle and historic
castles, is a walker’s
paradise. Reward a
vigorous hike with a dram
of whisky in Stein Inn, the
oldest pub on the island.

Paperbark
Camp
Bordering the rolling York
shire Dales is The Bivouac,
an upscale ecoretreat where
guests sleep in timberframe
shacks, canvas yurts or
a bunk barn (for up to 12
people). During the day,
spot hawks during a ramble,
indulge in a massage or build
a campfire with the kids
as the sun goes down. The
onsite café serves seasonal,
homemade fare. This year’s
Grand Depart, the first stage
of the Tour de France, passes
through nearby Masham and
Ripon on 5 July.
After a long flight, it would
be easy to kick back in
Sydney, but smart travellers
continue on to Paperbark
Camp. Accommodation is in
tents, but this is no regular
camping experience. These
canvas palaces come with a
wraparound veranda, hard
wood flooring and a rolltop
bathwithaview. The camp
is located in the bush, but
the white sands of Jervis Bay
are within easy reach. The
perfect way to start your trip
round Australia.

Time Flies

the latest trends in
watches and timepieces.

Blancpain, the world’s

Celebrity watch
Old or new. Men’s or women’s.
The design and craftsmanship of a quality
watch will always stand the test of time.
Chrono love
Men love chronographs. There’s no point in
denying it. Chronographs have an appeal to them
that watch-loving men simply cannot resist. Is
it because a ‘chrono’ is a high-tech instrument?
Measuring elapsed seconds and then counting
them mechanically is not a simple task. Or is it
something else? Maybe there are more philosophical reasons to be found.
A normal watch visualises the passing of
time. A chronograph can stop time. With the
push of a button, the hands counting time come
to a standstill and show you the time they just
‘caught’. You could say that a chronograph is an
instrument pretending to give us some control of
our existence by visualising elapsed time. It’s a
fascinating concept.
Great stories and fun facts also help get men
fired up. For instance: the chronograph is named
after the Greek chronos (‘time’) and graphô (‘I
write’). In 1822, the Parisian watchmaker Rieussec invented an instrument in a wooden box
that actually wrote elapsed time with a series of
ink dots on a paper dial. In 1862, Adolphe Nicole
of Switzerland then developed the modern-day
chronograph system with an elapsed time hand
that could be set back to zero.
Lovely anecdotes, indeed. But the love of
chronographs may be attributed to the plain fact
that they just look great – enticingly so. A watch
with buttons, as many hands as possible and
subdials is just irresistible for men with a weak
spot for metres, gauges and indicators. It may be
as simple as that.
Lucky ladies
IWC, official supplier to men, reaches
out to female watch lovers. The new
Portofino is a midsize mechanical revolution from Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
“Ladies, you ride our Harleys, smoke our
Havanas, drink our Glenmorangie. Hands off
our IWC,” was once the text of an IWC marketing campaign. But times change. With so many
watch-loving women reaching for an IWC, the
watch manufacturer from Schaffhausen decided
to launch its first collection of ladies watches.
IWC decided to revolutionise their collection
by adding two feminine Portofino models.
Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima
and her colleague from the Czech Republic
Karolina Kurkova – both ‘friends of the brand’
– were a source of inspiration while bringing to
life the new Portofino. Adriana Lima sure knows
watches: “A watch is an important accessory,
especially if you don’t like to wear too much
jewellery. I think that watches reveal a lot
about your personality and I am fascinated by
how IWC timepieces seem to touch your soul
time and again and reveal yet another facet of
you. Each watch – the Aquatimer, Pilot’s Watch
or Portofino Midsize – has a profoundly strong
yet graceful presence that leaves a
genuine feeling of empowerment.”
Fellow brand ambassador Karolina Kurkova
recalls wearing the stylish Portofino during
the photo shoot in Portofino, the town on the
Amalfi coast for which the watch was named:
“My most memorable moment was simply being
in the unique and magical place of Portofino. I
felt like I was transported back in time – like a
Hollywood movie star being filmed by a director
who wasn’t only shooting fashion, but timeless,
raw photos. Working with Peter Lindbergh
is always a treat as he understands a woman’s
inner beauty.”
A long time ago, IWC placed an advertisement
in a German newspaper saying ‘IWC makes
ladies watches’. It was an April fool’s joke. The
new Portofino ladies models, however, are no
joke; they’re for real.

London and KaDeWe in Berlin. Consumers
increasingly shop internationally, so we have
English, Chinese and Russian-speaking hosts
in house, and other services aimed at them.
We want to be the place for the innovative
brands you can’t find in every high street.
That’s a smart suit you’re wearing – from
de Bijenkorf, I presume?
I get all my clothes there – this suit, my shirts,
my socks, everything in fact. I usually buy
premium brands because of the quality and fit,
but I like jeans and casual clothes too. I go for
the best of both worlds, you see. I really
appreciate luxury, although I don’t think you
can separate the tangible from the intangible:
walking through a beautiful forest and
enjoying the autumn leaves is a luxury too.
So, as your customers are increasingly
travellers, what travel experience would
your store ideally reflect?
It would have to be the Orient Express, which
was all about grandeur and adventure. It
meant being able to see the things you couldn’t
see at home, while sitting on a comfortable
train, surrounded by just the right ambiance.
Of course, it’s not just about the destination,
but what you experience on the journey.
Would you say you are more rational, or
more emotional?
Retail is emotion and you should never forget
that – and it’s particularly true for the brands
we work with. There is plenty of experience
involved. I like to mix it up a bit though. I’m
very business-like when it comes to considering brands for the store, but there’s a lot of
feeling involved too – I have to ask myself, does
this brand or this experience fit in with de
Bijenkorf’s DNA? We also have a vision of the
future which we’re working towards in a very
rational, disciplined way.
Speaking of journeys, how often do you fly?
About 15 times a year. I’ve recently been to
Rome for work and I just got back from Berlin,
where I had a great time with my eldest son. I
have three boys, and for the last few years I’ve
been doing an annual city trip with one of
them. You can really focus on each other and
see a beautiful city at the same time. The boys
take it in turns to choose a city and so far we’ve
done New York, London and Rome as well as
Berlin. We do look for the crowds, but I always
go for a nice hotel with a pool, so we can >
