eaders agree top honors for BBQ in town goes to
the Short Stop Food Mart, where on Thursdays,
April through October, they fire up the Barbeque
Train, a 17-foot long outdoor grill, and serve up pulled pork
and ribs 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
Short Stop owner/operator Chris Smith said close to 500
customers came opening day, April 7, to try out the grill menu
and he’s honored the BBQ is a Readers’ Choice.
The rub used to season the pork originated with Smith’s
longtime friend, Tom Vernon of Ellettsville. “Tom perfected
that rub over 28 years,” said Gerrick DeVane, Short Stop
R
catering manager and guy behind the grill on Thursdays. “It’s
really the foundation for the BBQ”.
DeVane said patrons appreciate the tenderness of the meat,
which is slowly cooked over a hickory wood fire. Foodies, hailing from the South (home of the BBQ), are telling DeVane
that Short Stop “can compete with any southern outfit’s BBQ.”
Founded in 1979, Short Stop started out as a little neighborhood grocery store at the corner of 10th Street and Smith
Road. In the 1980s, it became a place for kids to hang and
play video games. Grown ups appreciated the addition of gas
pumps in 1985. Renovations during the past decade include
a new canopy and modern gas pumps.
It’s still convenient to stop there for milk and bread; but
check this out — goodies made fresh in the Short Stop kitchen
include pies, fudge, sandwiches and pasta salad. Plus, there’s a
catering service, and, oh, that BBQ on Thursdays.
Hours for Short Stop, 901 N. Smith Road. are Mon.-Thurs.

ohn Bailey, managing partner of Malibu Grill, says
quality, selection and value are what keep customers
coming back to this restaurant open 17 years now at
106 N. Walnut St. on the courthouse square.
“Every time I look at our menu I think in terms of quality
first. I’m very picky about the products we use here, and we
make things like our sauces and dressings from scratch,” he said.
Malibu offers foodies a variety of choices. ‘Selection is very,
very key for us,” Bailey said. “We’re not an Italian restaurant but
we have great pasta, we’re not a seafood place, but we have great
seafood, we’re not a steak house but we have really great steak.
We spend a lot of time on selection and make sure we’re paying
attention. Every plate that goes out you’re on trial, and we work
very hard on giving people what they expect.”
A Readers’ Choice for best bar and restaurant, Malibu Grill
offers good food, good service and great atmosphere at a fair
price, Bailey said. And there are fun specials at the bar during
the week. Five dollar cocktails, ranging from the classics to new
classics, are served up on Mondays, and select bottles of wines
are available on Tuesdays for $12.
Bailey said a loyal number of local patrons have been coming the restaurant for years, among them was Bill Cook, who
once took Bailey to a fish farm up in Muncie. The perch from
that farm has been on the Malibu menu ever since.
Malibu Grill hours are: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30-9:30
p.m. Mon.-Thur.; 5:30-10:30 p.m. Fri.; noon to 10:30 p.m. Sat.;
and noon to 9 p.m. Sun.

ary M’s Walnut House Flowers has a unique approach to customer service, folks who can’t afford it can get a free bouquet
of flowers on Fridays.
“It’s kind of a way to give back to the community,” co-owner Randy Sciscoe
said. “We probably give away 250 to 300 bouquets a week.” With the price of
everything going up, Sciscoe said making floral arrangements affordable to their
customers is still their whole focus. A dozen roses sells for $7.99, and in-town
delivery is free. Other considerations include keeping store hours on Sundays,
so that fresh flowers, rather than bouquets or baskets made the day before, can
be delivered to mortuaries in time for visitations or funerals.
Located at 406 W. Second St., near Bloomington Hospital, Mary M’s cer-
M
tainly gets calls from customers requesting flowers for loved ones who have had
a baby or are ill and in the hospital. “But our core business is churches and IU,”
Randy said. Churches send flowers to congregants who are ill or to the families
of a congregant who has passed way.
Bloomington being a college town, Mary M’s gets plenty of calls and emails
from parents requesting flowers as a way of wishing their youngsters a happy
birthday or to celebrate their initiation into Greek life.
In business for over 40 years, the Sciscoe family combined two floral shops,
Mary M’s and Walnut House on Fifth Street, five years ago; but customer service
is still the same. “We pretty much bend over backwards for folks,” Randy said.
Store hours are 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday
and Sunday.

ancy Smith, the owner of Interiors by Nancy, goes out of her
way to make sure she’s providing the best service for her clients.
Readers of The Herald-Times rewarded her efforts by voting
her business No. 1 in interior design.
Nancy has managed her business for seven years, but she had plenty of
time brushing up on her product knowledge before that, with a long career
in retail, including 23 years at McDaniel’s Furniture. Nancy’s business focuses
on furniture and design help, as well as paint and flooring.
“I supply a very personalized service,” she said. “Many people think
interior designers are expensive, but they don’t have to be. I work with their
budget and make sure they get the most for their money.”

Not only is Nancy willing to make sure her clients are getting the best
service, but she works with their needs and their schedules. “Interior designing
should not be rubber stamping,” she said. “Instead of making her customers
come to her, Nancy brings her services to them. While she does have a studio
of her own she does most of her work at the client’s home.
“It’s much easier for clients to visualize what they’re looking for if they
can see it in their own home,” she said.
One of Nancy’s most unique services is her business hours. She works
with the client’s schedules, which often means working evenings and weekends, “whatever suits the clients,” she says.

ndrew Davis Menswear on the downtown square has only been
open for three and a half years and its popularity is soaring says
Macey Dale, store manager.
The business supplies everything a man could need when it comes to
clothing, from socks to ties to casual wear to formal suits, Dale said. Like
their motto says, “You’ll not want to shop anywhere else!”
Not only do they supply clothing for all occasions and all body-types
but they also have an on-hand tailor for quick turnarounds. Unlike big retail
stores, Andrew Davis Menswear has just two regular employees, making each
visit much more personal.

“We provide a unique customer service and by having two regular
employees we know our clients by name,” Dale said.
Andrew Davis Menswear also offers tuxedo rentals at the client’s convenience. The business is in the Fountain Square Mall.
“We’re a favorite because we are a part of the community and provide
the best quality clothing in Bloomington,” Dale said.
Andrew Davis is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and on Sundays by appointment.
