Problem
Holcim Philippines, Inc. owns a silica quarry operation in
the town of Agno, Pangasinan, but which they have decided to closed after several years of operation.
At site, several stockpiles of silt were left exposed, which
during rainy season, are eroded and caused disturbances on a nearby residential area below the site.
HPI constructed three temporary silt trap dams to address the problem. However, the materials used in the
construction of the dams were just ordinary sand bags
thus the structures eventually collapsed. HPI decided to
asked recommendations from Maccaferri regarding the
matter.
Solution
Maccaferri has designed a small embankment dam
made of PVC-coated Gabions and a layer of MacTex
Nonwoven Geotextile. MPI has recommended to construct one weir as replacement to the three damaged
temporary silt trap dams.
The embankment dam was designed to contain sediments during rainy season, with an opening in the middle top portion akin to a spillway aimed to release excess water when it reaches a critical level.
