Welcome to Joensuu!
Though Joensuu may not often be your actual destination, after arriving you’ll certainly find your journey was worth the trouble. A lively and developing city, it offers both its residents and guests a
wide variety of opportunities ranging from throbbing nightlife to wilderness calm. The city centre
has evolved dramatically in the past few years and
even the most demanding shoppers will find their
desires satisfied. Choose from items at the intimate Artisan’s Quarter to the spacious Iso Myy
mall and everything in between! Excitement and
expansion go beyond just business; there’s a thriving cultural and sports life as well as a broad calendar of events. And it goes on throughout the year.
There’s also more of Joensuu in 2009, added
space now that Eno and Pyhäselkä have become
part of the area. We wish you a warm welcome,
so enjoy Joensuu and its seemingly endless possibilities.

There are three temporary exhibitions in 2009:
The Faces of Väinämöinen 29.1–29.3. 2009
The year opens with an exhibition of photographs,
The Faces of Väinämöinen, by Timo Väänänen, one
of Finland’s best-known kantele-players, celebrating the 160th anniversary of The Kalevala. The exhibition shows the many faces of Kantele-players:
famous, old, young, new, familiar. Numerous kanteles from the 18th century onwards in museum collections are also on display.
mas Sopanen’s extensive collection of rya rugs
from the 18th century to the present day. It describes the rya as a useful textile, object of decoration and work of art.
The autumn theme is Space and the cosmos. The
exhibition examines the creation of the world from
the perspective of different religious myths and
Western science. The items in the exhibition include pictures, instruments used in space investigations, astronomical pursuits and scale models. It opens on 8.10.2009.
The Museum is also home to Mukulakatu, Kids'
Street, a fantasy town for children.

The Museum area includes two lighted and heated steel-reinforced concrete dugouts, weapons and
artefacts, trenches, machine gun nests and tank obstacle stones. The canteen and campfire services are
provided by Sotilaspojat. The Bunker museum can

Botania
Botania – the University Botanical Gardens offers

brought to the garden in spring, when the tropical
butterflies arrive, lasts long into the fall.
In summer, beside the ornamental plants and
trees and bushes in the outdoor garden, there
are special sections for poisonous and medicinal
plants as well as spices. Visit the butterfly and insect collections, changing theme exhibitions and,
of course, Juuso the talking parrot. For opening
hours and admission fees, see page 4.

Churches
Joensuu Evangelical Lutheran Church
Kirkkokatu, southern end.
The restoration of the Evangelical Lutheran church
(2002) gave the church a greater sense of light than
before. On the outside, the biggest change entails
the terrace-like square built in front of the main entrance. The neo-Gothic church was designed by architect Josef Stenbäck, and is open daily between
5 June–30 August 11 am–7 pm. At other times the
church is open for meditation Mon–Thu 4 pm–6
pm and on Sundays after services until 1 pm.
Music and theatre
Joensuu Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas
Kirkkokatu, northern end.
The wooden church of St. Nicholas was built in 1887.
The most cherished part of the church is the iconostasis or the altar screen painted at the monastery of
St. Alexander Nevski in St. Petersburg. Regular services are held on Saturdays at 6 pm and Sundays
at 10 am. Visitors are welcome. The church is open
15 June–14 August Mon–Fri 10 am–4 pm, other
times by agreement. The church registry office houses a small icon shop (open weekdays 8 am–12 pm,
1 pm–3 pm).
Orthodox Cemetery Prayer Hut
Consecrated to the memory of the discovery of the
Holy Cross.
Church of St. John Chrysostom
Torikatu 41
The Orthodox seminary in Joensuu also has a church,
which is built in the Byzantine style. Services during
the academic year Mon–Fri 7.20 am–8.20 am and
5 pm–5.30 pm. The services are open to all.
Other Lutheran Churches
Pielisensuu Church in Niinivaara (built in 1960),
Rantakylä Church (1981), Noljakka Church (1998)
and the Utra Church Väisälänkatu 2, constructed
of vertically positioned logs (1895). Utra Church
is open 5 June–9 August Mon–Sat 12 pm–5 pm,
Sun 12 pm–6 pm. Evening music/prayers on

pm. The Eno wooden church was erected in 1818
and designed by Anton Wilhelm Arppe. It is representative of the churches built at that time in
eastern Finland. It is reminiscent of a dual-cross
church influenced by neo-classism.
The oldest part of the church is the pulpit from
the old church in Kuopio. The altarpiece, from 1930,
was painted by Eino J. Härkönen. The church textiles were designed by textile artist Kaisa Mäkelä.

The most demanding of the hiking trails in Kiihtelysvaara is the approx. 40 km long ribbon-like Oravantaival trail running from Riuttavaara to Valkeavaara.
The area also has shorter trails, e.g. the Kiihtelysvaara-Hyypiänvaara trail (12.5 km), the Kiihtelysvaara culture trail (8 km) and the Hietajärvi loop
(9 km). These routes with their campfires and leantos are marked on the Kiihtelysvaara trail map, which
