KIITOLLISUUSHAASTE
Terveiset Suomesta pakkasen keskeltä! Helsinkiin satoi tänään 23.10. ensilumi. Pakkanen on tuonut myös
kuulaan sään, aurinko paistaa kalpeasti pilvien takaa. Syksy on mennyt nopeasti. Tuntuu siltä, että vasta äsken oli kesä
ja nyt kauppoihin ovat jo alkaneet tulla ensimmäiset joulusuklaat ja joulukoristeet. Ajatukset kääntyvät taas kohti
joulun odotusta. Joulun rauhaa ja valoa kyllä kaivataankin pimeän keskelle, niin konkreettisesti kuin
kuvainnollisestikin.
Viime viikkoina monet ystäväni ja tuttavani ovat kertoneet omia kiitollisuudenaiheitaan. Nämä
kiitollisuudenaiheet he ovat kirjoittaneet näkyviin internetin Facebook-palveluun. Tätä kautta he ovat myös haastaneet
toisia ihmisiä mukaan miettimään ja kirjoittamaan ylös niitä asioita, joista toiset puolestaan ovat kiitollisia. Tätä
eräänlaista leikkiä on kutsuttu Kiitollisuushaasteeksi. Kiitollisuuden aiheita on pitänyt listata viisi kappaletta viitenä
päivänä, yhteensä siis 25 syytä olla kiitollinen. Minutkin haastettiin mukaan tähän ketjuun ja kirjoitin joka päivä ylös
viisi asiaa. Huomasin, että kiitollisuuden aiheiden löytäminen ei ollut vaikeaa. Jokaiseen päivään sisältyy hyvää, kun
vain haluaa sen nähdä. Makeat yöunet, flunssasta paraneminen tai se, että muisti palauttaa kirjaston kirjat ennen
eräpäivää, kaikesta pienestäkin hyvin sujuvasta asiasta voi löytää iloa. Ajattelen myös, että Jumala on koko ajan
mukana elämässämme. Hänelle ei pienetkään asiat ole liian vähäpätöisiä. Hän siunaa meitä monin tavoin ja voimme
myös huomata sen, kun hieman pysähdymme ajattelemaan asiaa. Marraskuinen Thanksgiving-juhla antaa tilaisuuden
myös miettiä kiitollisuuden aiheita omassa ja lähipiirin elämässä. Elämän lahja itsessään on suuri kiitollisuuden aihe.
Jumalan henkäyksestä olemme saaneet elämän ja samaa lahjaa on jokainen uusi päivämme.
Olen tulossa muutaman viikon kuluttua jälleen luoksenne adventtiaikaa viettämään. Odotan suurella ilolla
teidän tapaamistanne taas. Mieheni Totti ja lapsemme Teo ja Tella jäävät tällä kertaa kotiin Suomeen, mutta he
haluavat lähettää paljon terveisiä seurakunnalle ja tutuksi tulleille ihmisille!
Sydämellisesti tervetuloa adventin ajan jumalanpalveluksiin ja tilaisuuksiin, tavataan kirkolla! Hyvän
Jumalan siunausta kaikkiin päiviin!

The Challenge of Giving Thanks
Greetings from Finland in times of frost! The first snowfall in Helsinki came today, October 23. The frost
has brought sheer skies and clear weather, the sun is shining bleakly from behind the clouds. Autumn has gone fast.
It seems like we only just had summer and now the shops have already started to carry the first Christmas chocolates
and Christmas decorations. Our thoughts turn again towards the expectation of Christmas. We long for Christmas
peace and Christmas lights, badly needed in the middle of the dark, both concretely and as figuratively.
In recent weeks, many of my friends and acquaintances have told their own motivations to be thankful. They
have written down these on their Facebook pages. Through this, they have also challenged other people to think
about and write down those things, for which, they in turn, are grateful. This some sort of game is called the
Challenge of Giving Thanks. The participants have had to list five reasons during five days, a total of 25 reasons to
be grateful for. I too was challenged to participate in this thread and I wrote every day up to five things. I noticed
that things to be thankful for were not difficult to find. Each day brings something good when you just want to see it.
A night of sweet sleep, a recovery from the flu, or that one remembers to return the library books before the due
date; joy and thankfulness can be found in even the slightest issues. I am also thinking about how God is involved in
our lives all the time. For him not even the smallest things are insignificant. He will bless us in many ways, and we
can notice it when we calm down to ponder about things a little bit. The November Thanksgiving Day celebration
provides an opportunity to think about things to be grateful for in your own life and in the life around you. The gift of
life itself is a big thing to be thankful for. With the breath of God we have received the gift of life and the gift of each
new day.
I'm coming in a few weeks once again to you to spend the Advent season with you. I look forward with great
pleasure to seeing you again. Totti, my husband, and our children, Teo and Tella will this time stay at home in
Finland, but they want to send a lot of greetings to the church community and all people they met! We wish you all
welcome to the church services and the events of the Advent season! Good God bless you all days!

E. Norman Westerberg
Our beloved Norman Westerberg, Honorary Consul Emeritus of
Finland and Past President of our Church Council, peacefully passed
away on October 16, 2014 at Covenant Shores on Mercer Island. He
is survived by his wife Benita, their two sons and daughter with
families.
Norm will be greatly missed by all of us.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life of Norman Westerberg
will take place on November 22 at 11 AM at the Finnish Lutheran
Church.
Norm's wish was that any remembrances would be directed to the
Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th St, Seattle, WA 98117.

Finnish Lutheran Church is located in Crown Hill, serving all the Finns in the Washington State

Tummat pilvet kulkee hiljaa madellen.
Ihan niin kuin niiden mieli tekisi laskeutua maahan.
Armas aurinkoinen lähettää säteitään pilvien lomasta.
Kirkastamaan elämäämme.
Meillä ihmisillä usein mieli vaihtelee.
Aamun ankeus, päivän myötä häviää
Syksyn kultaa kaikkialla näkyy.
Keltaisena , punaisena, lehdet kimmeltää.
Mikä ihanuus. --- Tää on elämää.
Sitten saapuu Kiitospäivä. ---Siunattu.
Päivä juhlittu, joka perheet yhteen tuo.
Monet ristiriidat vuoden mittaan nuo.
Kaikki yhdeksi nyt sulautuu.
