Mission Statement
Bishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year co-educational
Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The mission of the school is to
form a faith-filled community and to provide a quality education that
addresses the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student
body. The comprehensive instructional program flows from a college
preparatory curriculum that empowers students to recognize their
potential and to meet educational and life challenges in the future.
The school, working in partnership with parents and the community,
promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by
preparing students to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselves
and others, to become life-long learners, and to contribute positively
to the community.

a message from
leadership
Dear Alumni and Friends:
The return of students to school after the long summer vacation is always an exciting event for our faculty and
staff. This year’s Back-to-School experience was no exception. Despite the earlier than usual opening day
and the bothersome heat some 1,390 enthusiastic scholars arrived on campus eager to begin another year
long educational adventure. The 400 ninth graders, spic and span in their new uniforms, bravely attempted
to conceal any inner nervousness they might have felt. The recently promoted seniors took on their school
leadership role with gusto and dedication.
As the new school year begins, I am pleased to provide all our stakeholders with this copy of the 2011-2012 Annual Report for Bishop
Amat High School. While it records our many significant achievements in the fields of religious formation, campus ministry, academics,
fine and performing arts, its main focus is on the provision of adequate funding for those programs and doing so at a cost that enables
families with low to medium incomes to send their children to Bishop Amat High School. I feel comfortable in maintaining that with
regard to the first of these objectives we have been eminently successful. With regard to the latter, while we have made much progress,
many unfulfilled challenges still lie ahead of us.
Our financial resources enabled us to hire and retain highly qualified and dedicated teachers who provided our students with rich and
challenging curricula. To ensure their continuing professional growth we offered them a wide variety of inservice opportunities. We
installed much cutting edge scientific and technological equipment in our labs and classrooms to prepare our students for the world in
which they will function after high school. Ample funds were also available to maintain the campus and its physical facilities at high levels
of safety, comfort and aesthetic appearance.
As I stated above, we made much progress towards our other goal of making attendance at the school affordable for our traditional
clients. We continued to have one of the lowest tuition rates in the Archdiocesan high school system. We dispensed a total of $310,000
from the school budget in tuition assistance grants. We sought and were granted $107,750 in tuition awards from the Catholic Education
Foundation. Our Development office staff maintained positive relations with several large foundations that have funded scholarships for
us in recent years. The Bishop Amat High School Endowment Fund provided us with $40,000.00 in financial aid revenue.
Despite the existence of all these sources of financial aid we found it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of many potential enrollees.
We had to face the sobering reality that some 28% of parents applying to the school required financial aid in order to meet our tuition
charges. Many who did enroll their children subsequently withdrew them because of worsening financial conditions in their personal
lives. The primary reason our enrollments in recent years have fallen short of our goal of 1,450 students is the inability of families to meet
the cost of sending their children to Bishop Amat.
Monsignor Aidan M. Carroll
President
Congratulations to our New Principal, Mr. Richard Beck
Richard Beck has been appointed Interim Principal and will serve under Monsignor Aidan M. Carroll, President of
Bishop Amat and former Superintendent of Schools.
Mr. Beck earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from Cal Poly Pomona, his California teaching credential
through Mount St. Mary’s College and his Master of Arts in Catholic School Administration through Loyola
Marymount University.
He has served on the Bishop Amat faculty since 1996 as Vice Principal, Assistant Principal of Student Services,
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Coordinator, Science Department Chair, Dean of Discipline,
WCEA/WASC Self-Study Coordinator, and biology teacher.
Mr. Beck and his wife, Margee have three children, two of whom currently attend parochial school and a one-year old son at home.

Bishop Amat High School Annual Report 2011-2012
I am deeply grateful to the many alums and other friends of the school who have generously supported our efforts to generate financial
aid funds in recent years. I earnestly encourage those of you who have not yet participated in this endeavor to do so as soon as possible.
Our needy families will greatly appreciate your kindly actions and so will I. I constantly remember you in my Masses and prayers as I strive
each day to preserve and enhance the heritage of this great high school.

Initially, I did not want to attend Bishop Amat. I was the only one
from my school going to Amat and I was a nervous wreck on the first
day of school. Although it was hard at first to find myself at Amat, I
am so happy that I chose this school.
These past four years have been so rewarding. I involved myself in
both the AP and IB programs, two extremely rigorous curricula. The
fact that Amat even offers the IB program is something of a special
note. It has prepared me so well for college because of the extensive
writing and research that is involved. I believe my education at Amat
has given me more than enough tools to succeed in college and in life.
The atmosphere at Amat is also something that I love dearly.
Because Amat is not a large school, my class has grown close to
one another. We are all unique individuals, but we share an eternal
bond. We support one another in times of sadness, and raise each
other up in times of joy. Amat has strengthened my desire to show
compassion to others and to give back to the community. All in
all, the experience I have had at Bishop Amat has been ever so
rewarding, and I will cherish it for always.
Christopher Gonzalez
2012 Salutatorian

When searching for a high school, I wanted to attend an
institution that was strong in academics and athletics, while
providing an environment that nurtured my faith - Bishop Amat
was such a place. It was not until my senior year, however, that I
fully realized how blessed I was to attend a school such as Amat.
In these past months, I have witnessed the culmination of my
hard work and the opportunities provided through Bishop Amat
manifest into successes in my collegiate endeavors. Nowhere
else is such strong and diverse curriculum paired with a myriad
of extra-curricular activities and competitive athletics. To top it
all off, students build lasting relationships with faculty members
who are passionate about the subjects they teach.
I would highly recommend Bishop Amat to any student. Bishop
Amat is a school that provides students with all the resources
and opportunities necessary to grow and succeed in today’s
competitive world. But ultimately, it is up to the student to take
full advantage of those resources in order to discover his/her
potential.

lways and forever...
Steadfast, Loyal and True!
On June 30, 2012, our distinguished and much loved Principal,
Dr. Merritt V. Hemenway (Class of 1964 alum) retired from Bishop
Amat Memorial High School. His association with Bishop Amat
began in 1960 with his enrollment as a freshman student. Following
his graduation from St. Mary’s College Moraga in 1968 he returned
to teach at his high school alma mater eventually assuming the
role of vice principal (1975) and Principal (1981). He earned an M.A.
from Cal State Los Angeles in 1974 and a Ph.D. from Claremont
Graduate University in 1999. In 1990 he left Bishop Amat High
School to serve as Principal of two other Catholic high schools
but returned in 2002 to again lead the school that is so dear to
his heart.
A man of profound spirituality, brilliant educational insights and
total dedication to the mission of Catholic schooling he will be
greatly missed from our campus. We hosted a special luncheon in
his honor at the Pacific Palms Resort where a large gathering of his
colleagues and friends had an opportunity to pay fitting tributes
to this outstanding educator.
On behalf of Monsignor Carroll and the entire Bishop
Amat Family, we wish him and his wife, Ruthie ‘65,
many years of good health and well-being to enjoy
the retirement phase of their wonderful life together.

Summer 2011
*Campus Improvements During the summer, Bishop
Amat spent appropriately $350,000 to make several
upgrades and improvements to the campus including
routine maintenance and repair projects in the areas of
plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting. In addition,
the school reseeded the football field, installed a campuswide wireless network, and purchased some new I.T.
equipment.
*School Year Starts in August The school year once
again began in August, allowing the first semester to end
before the break at Christmas and the seniors to graduate
in May. With the start of the new year, members of the
administration, faculty and staff pledged to fulfill the
school mission statement of teaching goodness, discipline
and knowledge.
Fall 2011
*Enrollment Increases for the 2011-2012 school year
Bishop Amat welcomed 1404 students at the start of the
new school year, which was 19 more than the starting
enrollment of 2010-2011 and 29 more than that of 20092010. Also, the freshman class began with a total of 425
students, which is the highest enrollment at that grade
level since 2006.
*Class of 2005 Alum returns to teach at Bishop Amat
Cecilia Caro’05 came back to her alma mater to substitute
for faculty member, Katherine Syroboyarski while she was
on maternity leave. It soon became clear that developing
members of the Class of 2030 would dominate the
landscape (see Faculty/Staff Birth Announcements).

*Drama Production Performs Twelve Angry Men – The
Drama Production performed Twelve Angry Jurors by
Reginald Rose in the Performing Arts Building (PAB) at
Bishop Amat during the weekend of October 21-23, 2011.
Since Amat’s production included a mixed gender cast,
the original title was altered from Twelve Angry Men to
Twelve Angry Jurors. All cast members did an outstanding
job keeping the audience members on their toes as they
anxiously waited to find out if the boy was to be found
guilty or not guilty.
Winter 2012
*With
Hope
Foundation
Presentation
The
freshman and new transfer students attended
a presentation by the With Hope Foundation, a
suicide prevention through education organization.
*Scholarship Awarded at Math Competition The 4th
Annual Bishop Amat Math Competition took place on
December 10, 2011 where over 30 elementary and middle
schools across the San Gabriel Valley competed for the
prestigious titles of “champion.” For the 2011 competition,
two $1,000 Bishop Amat scholarship awards were given
out - one to the highest scoring 8th grade boy and one to
the highest scoring 8th grade girl.
*Mother-Son and Father-Daughter Dances held The
traditional Mother-Son and Father-Daughter dances
(hosted by the Pep Squad and Dance Team respectively)
were held at the Royal Vista Golf Club in Walnut. Both
dances were well-attended and a good time was had by
all as parents and students enjoyed an evening of dinner
and dancing.
Spring 2012
*Previous School Registrar Passes Away Edith Torado,
who served as the school’s registrar, went home to be with
the Lord. On April 27, 2012, family and friends, including
both current and past faculty members, staff and alums
gathered together at St. Christopher Catholic Church
in West Covina to participate in a Mass of Resurrection,
celebrated by Monsignor Carroll, to say good-bye to our
dear friend. “Aloha, Edie.”
*Senior Exit Essay Introduced All seniors were asked to
write an “exit essay” in addition to completing the usual
end-of-the-year survey. The essays showed what the
students had learned throughout their four years spent
at Bishop Amat and recognized the tremendous efforts
made by both faculty and staff members.
*Media-Driven Yearbook Created The yearbook staff
created a yearbook PLUS that included video and more
pictures than ever before about the events of the year.
Students, faculty and staff used smart phones to scan the
codes throughout the book and were taken on a “PLUS”
memory trip.
*Inspirational Teachers at Bishop Amat Before the
closing of the 2011-2012 school year, sixty Amat teachers
were designated by one or more junior or senior students
as “inspirational”. Mr. Richard Beck and Ms. Lisa Morales
were voted 2012 “Great Teachers of Amat”.

2011-2012
lancer athletics
The Girls Varsity Volleyball team participated in
“Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness” prior to their match against St. Joseph.
As students, faculty and staff returned to school following
last year’s Accreditation Review and CIF Championships
in soccer and baseball, there was great optimism for what
the 2011-2012 year would bring. The Lancers, having set
a variety of records in the past, were ready to reach the
highest level of excellence. As the year progressed, one
could say it was always a “great day to be a Lancer.”
in the last week meant the sixth consecutive league
championship was a co-championship with the other
Lancers from La Salle.
Highlights:
Golf
Boys’ golf won league --- AGAIN!
Cross Country/ Girls’ Volleyball / Football
During the fall girls’ cross country found a young rising star,
Emily Hubert. The girls’ volleyball team made the second
round of playoffs and football won a three-way coin flip
giving them a first round contest in the CIF playoffs.
Ice Hockey
A new sport was added: club-level ice hockey. Sharing a
team with Ontario Christian, four Amat Lancers participated
and by the end of the season, the team won a contest over
Santa Margarita.
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ basketball made the playoffs by being a league wild
card, and won another CIF Championship.
Girls’ Soccer
Girls’ soccer once again won league and fought their way to
the CIF Finals only to lose a close one. They were, however,
invited to the State Playoffs and after wins at home and in
San Diego, they played Santa Margarita for the Southern
Region Championship.
Baseball
Having graduated twenty-four seniors from the
Championship team last year, baseball reloaded with
many sophomores and juniors. With their new team, they
continued to win throughout the season, but two losses
Softball
Softball fought hard all year and won league and went onto
the semi-final round of the playoffs.
Tennis
The team won several league matches and it was their best
season in years.
Swimming
Swimming showed promise with several performers making
it to CIF and once again, the Lancers won diving at the CIF
level.
Track
Track had some incredible moments including when Emily
Huber wowed the state with first class marks and Darren
Andrews earned a spot in the CIF Finals.
Overall, the athletic year was
excellent both on the field
and in the classroom. All but
one program earned a team
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
At the end-of-the-year banquets
we were pleased to recognize
the many student-athletes for
their accomplishments.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Amat High School:
Keeping tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength
of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School
or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability of the
family to pay the tuition.
It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the
school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Monies raised through this year’s Annual Appeal will
be directed to current and future students of families who want to attend but cannot afford the entire cost. Please consider
making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.
To obtain information on establishing a Named Scholarship, please contact Ms. Deborah Oswald, Development Director at

rooted in
the amat tradition
Scott and Judy (McGee) Ragano ‘87
Bishop Amat will always be a place close to our hearts. We graduated
twenty five years ago, but have never strayed far. There have been
three generations of Amat graduates in our family. Having the
opportunity to have sent our daughters (Tiffany ’06, Amanda ’07, and
Nicole ’12) to Amat was like coming home - home to our Amat family
and to the place where it all began for us. The family atmosphere was
just as we remembered it years ago. It has been a blessing to be able
to continue the tradition. This close community continuously does
amazing things in academics, sports, and community service. Most
importantly, the success of Amat is due to the strong Christian values
it is founded on. It is difficult to put into words the lasting impact
Bishop Amat has left on us but giving back is our way of saying “thank
you.”.
Matthew Vermeeren ‘95
Bishop Amat High School Annual Report 2011-2012
8
My family’s connection to Bishop Amat dates back to the 1960’s and 1970’s, when my dad and his
sisters were students at the school. As kids, my brother and I played CYO basketball in the old
Tate Duff Memorial Gym and joined our parents and friends at football games on Friday nights. Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the school’s Consultative Council. My hope
is that the community of Bishop Amat teachers, students, alumni and friends will work together
zealously to make Catholic education accessible to families throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
Mauricio Zavala ‘88
Raised in a proud Catholic family, Bishop Amat was the only choice when
it came to a quality education. I am one of five siblings that graduated
from Bishop Amat. During my school years, I did not realize how much the
education I received would benefit me personally and eventually impact my
life as an adult. Now, with three children of my own, I continually rely on the
lessons learned and the strengthening of my faith having attended Amat.
During recent years, I have enjoyed working on the Advisory Council, the
Golf Tournament, and the Scholarship Benefit Dinner committees. I see
these committees as avenues to securing a financial future for the school,
building relationships with other committee members, and most importantly,
providing financial aid for deserving students.
If we continue to support incoming students with an above-average faithbased education, we will be helping ourselves to a better future for all.

gifts in kind
In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop
Amat during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Lancer Classic, and
Golf Tournament. Contributions such as computer hardware, library books, and printing support are other ways to
assist the school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to
Bishop Amat during the 2011-2012 school year.
