One of my roles at Bishop Amat is adviser of the Tusitala
yearbook staff.As I watch my students struggle to design
and write a 368 page publication, I’m reminded of the
importance of collaboration.The act of creation inspires
students to accomplish amazing things. It seems that
participation in something big, in something meaningful,
strengthens people in hope, faith, and love.
Bishop Amat is in the process of forging a novel
understanding of how it will continue to serve the San
Gabriel Valley over the next fifty years. Part of this
process includes the creation of a Master Plan, a plan that
envisions progressive structural advancements.Amat’s
alumni base contains thousands of members with distinct
talents and points of view.All are encouraged to contact
the Development Office and be a part of the school’s
future.
In a school community, the fall months bring new
friendships and continued efforts toward academic
success.While the freshman class endeavors to establish
itself among the Amat Family, the senior class works to
complete college applications and prepare for the rigors
of the twelfth grade.
The Bishop Amat community sincerely thanks all those
who have participated in the opening events of the 50th
Anniversary celebration. So far, we have celebrated
the sacrament of Eucharist with the Archbishop of Los
Angeles, witnessed the publishing of Steadfast, Loyal, and
True by Ronald Woolsey, and joined in fellowship at the
Homecoming Barbeque.We enthusiastically encourage
all alumni to participate in the remaining events this Gabriel Escovar ‘98
academic year.

Congratulations!
Greetings to all of you with this Fall 2007 edition of your newsletter, The Amat Tradition.
Editor, Gabe Escovar, Class of 1998, has done a great job in reporting to you on some of
the significant Jubilee events that have taken place during the first two months of the school
year.Chief among them was the Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated on September 17 by His
Eminence, Cardinal Roger Mahony for some 2000 faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni
in the Student Activity Center.It was wonderful to see so many alumni attending the Mass and
actively participating as readers, musicians, communion ministers and singers.Several of the
eleven priest alumni concelebrated with the Cardinal.

capable of offering much more service to reunion committees as they plan their special events.Moreover, our new
air-conditioned Student Activity Center with its fully equipped commercial kitchen facilitates the holding of reunion
dinner/dances here on the Bishop Amat campus.Please let Marie know of your plans and needs.We may be able to
assist you in holding your reunion celebration.
You may have already received the materials developed for our 2007-08 Annual Appeal – The Spirit of Giving.Several
of your fellow alums have been instrumental in the direction of this campaign.They have selected four vitally important
programs to which they would like to direct the funds donated in response to our appeal.These are the Endowment
Fund, the Alumni Scholarship Fund, Educational Technology and the Retreat Program.Alumni are welcome, however,
to designate other worthwhile school programs as beneficiaries of their contributions.On behalf of our 1500 current
students and their families, many of whom are struggling to meet the cost of tuition and fees, I ask you to be generous
in your response.

Dear Fellow Alums:
As we approach the close of 2007 and anticipate the New Year it is normal to take a moment
to reflect on all that gives us cause to be thankful. Here at Amat, we are most grateful for
completing fifty years of serving the Lord in Catholic education. During those years we have
developed an incredible legacy of alumni, each of whom has contributed in a unique way to the
fabric of our school while a student, and to the make-up of our society as an alumnus.
DID YOU KNOW THAT…We currently have 30 faculty who were once students at Amat?
Three faculty have passed 30 years of service at Amat? (Sister Julie, Miss Sullivan, Mrs. Krause)
Fourteen additional faculty have completed twenty years of service to Amat?
DID YOU KNOW THAT… the Student Activity Center provides… a Seminar Room for Health classes and team meetings;
a Dance Room including 8 dance classes; a faculty lunchroom that is used for team pregame meals and post season
banquets; a kitchen for student lunches now served cafeteria style; a magnificent weight room that shines among the
best in high schools?
DID YOU KNOW THAT… 65% of Bishop Amat seniors in 2007 enrolled in four-year colleges?Alumni surveys indicate
nearly 84% of graduates complete their college degree within six years of high school graduation?In the first year of
the program, Bishop Amat had a 94% pass rate in IB course assessments?
We are thankful for the success of our students.Gratefully we have a very dedicated teaching staff that is best
demonstrated by the number of students sitting for “external assessments” in AP and IB courses. Our “Challenge
Index” of nearly 1.5 is well above the 1.0 that indicates the top 5% of schools in the country. Our success equity
(percent of seniors passing an external assessment exam) of 16.9 last year is far above the national average of 14.8.
Well done Lancers!

Mass of the Holy Spirit Inspires All
The Mass of the Holy Spirit, presided over by Cardinal Roger
Mahony, formally initiated Bishop Amat’s 50th Anniversary
celebration. Over twenty local priests (including three
alumni priests) and deacons were
concelebrants for the liturgy, held
September 17th in Amat’s Student
Activity Center.

several students, including senior Grayson Villanueva, Cardinal
Mahony proceeded to speak with each of the other classes.He
expressed his excitement over the students’ understanding of
the Spirit.
The environment of the Student Activity Center was transformed

created banners and other decorations.In addition, the presence

Lancer Alumni Revive Old Rivalry

12th, alumni participated in what has
become the traditional Homecoming
BBQ. The occasion proved to be
an appropriately fun and fulfilling
precursor to the game’s rain-soaked
conclusion.

and True,” a publication documenting

Woolsey about the book, the product of over a year’s worth of
research.

Salute to Athletic Excellence
Bishop Amat will recognize the outstanding achievements of the
dedicated teachers who have served the school community over
the past fifty years.All alumni and parents are invited to attend
a reception in the Student Activity Center on Saturday, January
12th.The informal gathering will feature wine and cheese, hors
d’ouevres and desserts. Everyone is encouraged to help us
communicate with former teachers by providing addresses, phone

of individuals, coaches, administrators and students who have
created the long and distinguished Lancer Athletic Tradition.
Special honorees for the dinner event will be the head coaches
who have helmed 22 CIF Championship winning teams.Amat’s
earliest first CIF championship was earned in football in 1961 and
its most recent championships were in 2007 in both baseball and

Gary Brennan ‘68
Matthew Deurmeier ‘00
Gary Brennan serves as the Deputy Chief of Police for the Los
Angeles Police Department.A third generation LAPD officer, Deputy
Chief Brennan has worked in the Training, Anti-Terrorist, and Internal
Affairs divisions.He was appointed to Deputy Chief by Chief of Police
William J. Bratton on December 19, 2002. On July 4, 2004, he
was additionally assigned as the Chief of Detectives, responsible for
detective operations Citywide.Deputy Chief Brennan served in the
California Air and Army National Guards from 1971-1978, achieving
the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
Matthew was promoted to Captain in July and transferred to Ft.
Myers in Washington D.C.Matthew, honored with an assignment to
the “Old Guard,” now serves in the 3rd Infantry Regiment that guards
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
Specifically, Matthew serves as the Officer in Charge for certain
V.I.P. details, including ceremonies commemorating late Presidents
and the arrivals of foreign dignitaries.Most recently, Matthew was
O.I.C. of a 17 member multi-service Honor Guard at the funeral for
Congressman Paul Gillmor of Ohio.
Matt Molina ‘95
Matthew Abiva ‘04
Matt serves as the executive chef for two of Los Angeles’ hottest
restaurants, Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza. He helps to
develop recipes and plan the menus in conjunction with owners
Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali, and Joe Bastianich. He also runs
the kitchen, inspecting dishes before they leave the kitchen and
supervising as many as 75 cooks and line chefs.Matt went to the
Los Angeles Culinary Institute in Burbank shortly after graduating
from Bishop Amat. Before his current position, Matt worked at Mi
Piace in Pasadena, 2087 in Thousand Oaks, and Campanile in Los
Angeles.Matt was recently featured in a Los Angeles Times article
written by Russ Parsons on August 29th, 2007.
Matthew is an architecture student at the University of Southern
California.He recently created an organization on campus, Fishbowl,
of which he is the president.Associated with the organization is a
multi-disciplinary, student run publication, MEANS (Matthew is Editorin-Chief).The inspiring publication has made waves in the L.A. art
world, and has been noticed by KCRW, the Los Angeles Times, and
selected book stores.Matthew also composes music, and has been
invited by a band director to compose a percussion ensemble to be
played in New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall. Finally, Matthew will be
studying abroad this spring in Italy.
Kory Minor ‘95
Dan Haren ‘98
Danny was selected this summer to be the starting pitcher for the
American League during MLB’s All-Star game in San Francisco.He
started 34 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2007 (tied for most
in baseball), led the AL in ERA for much of the season, and struck
out three and a half batters for every one he walked (eighth in the
AL).His 3.47 strikeout to walk ratio in three seasons with the A’s is
the second best in club history, behind only Dennis Eckersley (7.15).
Now the bonafide ace of the A’s, Danny figures to again be one of
baseball’s best pitchers in the 2008 season.
Kory, gridiron star at high school, college and professional levels,
has opened a new Domino’s Pizza franchise on Indian Hill Boulevard
in Claremont, California. Kory does it all, from paying the bills to
baking pizzas. His customers regularly get the chance to talk with
him about the latest sports news.

Courtney King ‘99
Jeffrey Vrieling ‘75
Courtney King, member of the class of 1999, was tragically killed in a single vehicle
crash in late October on the 210 freeway.Courtney worked for the Inland Valley Daily
Bulletin, writing stories for regional entertainment stories and compiling calendar
listings for upcoming events.Courtney will be remembered by the Amat Family as a
hard worker and a joyful, determined, young woman.
Jeffrey Vrieling, member of the class of 1975, was tragically killed due to complications
resulting from a single vehicle crash in mid-August.He and a friend were on the way
to Laughlin, Nevada.Jeffrey is survived by his father James, mother Wanda, and
siblings Richard ‘76, Cheryl ‘77, Steven ‘82, Christine (Vrieling) Jackson ‘82, and was
predeceased by Cynthia Vrieling ‘79.
Edward Kelly
Joseph E. Walsh
Edward Kelly (aged 92) was a native of County Leix, Ireland, and father of Mary (Kelly)
Foy ‘75, Edward Kelly ‘77, Nancy Kelly ‘79, Kevin Kelly ‘80, Jane (Kelly) O’Neal ‘83, and
Matthew Kelly ‘86, passed away after a lengthy illness.During the late 1970’s and
early 1980’s, Mr. Kelly was an avid supporter of the Athletic Boosters and a familiar
face on campus.In 1978, Mr. Kelly took his children back to his native Ireland, his
first time there since he immigrated to the United States.The Kelly family has been
active at both St. Martha and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parishes over the years.
Joseph E. Walsh passed away October 2nd, 2007.He was the father of Michael
Walsh ‘67, Kathleen Pierce ‘69, Nancy Kirkess ‘70, Timothy Walsh ‘71, and Colleen
Walsh ‘73.

The Amat community mourns the untimely death of former faculty member, Annie
Johnson (age 46).Annie was an outstanding member of the English department in
the 80s and 90s.

represent one alum’s experience at the reunion.
-- I spoke with Therese Bamper at the homecoming game and told her that while I
remembered her, I couldn’t recall that we shared any classes together at Amat.She
gently reminded me that we were in the same 5th and 6th grade classes at Tonopah
E.S., near Amat. We proceeded to reminisce about the “doughnut” architecture
there and our experiences walking to Bishop Amat.

-- I made plans to hike one of Colorado’s “Fourteeners” (mountains with elevations
of 14,000 feet and greater) with David Eickhoff next summer.
-- I received some good advice from Martha Ramirez on different places to see on
the Big Island, her former residence and a place I have grudgingly (wink!) agreed to
go on business next month.
-- I shook hands with Mr. Hemenway at Homecoming, who proceeded to recall in
detail that my time at Bishop Amat coincided with the introduction of computerized
report cards.He certainly is “Mr. Amat,” and the ultimate link across the years and
generations of Lancers.
-- I walked around campus before the Homecoming game and it seemed tiny and
compact, not unlike how Disneyland feels to an adult, with the exception of the new
gym.I opined to others how “soft” Amat students must be, with the covered lunch
tables. Back when I was at Amat…

recognize the service and sacrifices of our alma mater’s Soldier,
Sailor, Airman, Marine and Coast Guard Veterans.If you are a
Veteran, or are currently serving in our Nation’s Armed Forces,

Name; (2) Highest rank attained; (3) Service (i.e., USA, USMC,
USN, USCG, USAF); (4) Component (i.e., Active, Reserve,
National Guard); (5) Highest military decoration/award; (6)
Brief comment, if you wish, regarding your military service (e.g.,
locations where you served and/or operations in which you
participated). Also send an electronic picture of yourself, in

Additionally, students in Bishop Amat’s International
Baccalaureate (IB) Program will also attempt to contact all
alumni for whom we have information to find out if you are a
Veteran or know of a graduate who is.A goal is to both produce
a collage of graduate military photographs and to make certain
that our students keep our Veterans and currently serving
troops in our prayers.
