drawing, offer congratulations for a great year, say thank you to a teacher/coach, advertise a business, and/or
show your Corbett Prep support. All advertisements will be in full color! It is easy to do, so please take
advantage of this opportunity. The yearbook committee will be happy to assist in any way. The order form is in

HIGHLIGHTS!!!…
CONGRATULATIONS TO HEADMASTER/DR. KACY KRIG FOR AN OUTSTANDING DAY
DURING HER ROLE AS HEADMASTER OF THE DAY on October 14, 2013. Dr. Krig worked
very hard to prepare for her day and ran an exciting assembly to start the day on Monday
morning. She was able to rock Gatlin Hall with her enthusiasm and command of her 650
students, teachers and guests in attendance. Headmaster/Dr. Krig had the opportunity to
introduce our 14 Spanish students and their Corbett Prep hosts as well as their two teachers
from Ramon Y Cajal, who are accompanying the students. Our students’ guests are in Grades 4
through 8 and are here with us for three weeks. Our Headmaster of the Day had a full program
with one big surprise! She cleverly left her podium, pretending to look for something, when all
of a sudden a Flash Mob to the music Thriller took over. Drum rolls were in abundance for a great morning. Thank
you to her Mom, Teresa Krig, and great friend, Jeff Greer, for winning Headmaster of the Day for Kacy at last year’s
February Big Event Live Auction!
The 2013-2014 FORENSICS TEAM (an extension of the middle school drama
elective) had its first meet of the year on October 16, held at Berkeley Preparatory School, and
the students did an amazing job! At this competition, drama/forensics students competed
against eight other schools. Congratulations to eighth grader Tyler Peterson, who
placed first in Oral Interpretation of Poetry for his great performance of Spam.
Tyler did a superb job; one judge commented, “This seems to come naturally to you!”
Both of the advisors/coaches, Mr. Michael Vokoun and Mrs. Victoria Watson, were so proud of this year’s group of
students. Mr. Vokoun reported, "For many students this was their first competition, and we are impressed with all
that the judges had to say about their progress and performances." Congratulations to the Forensics Team for all of
the hard work and willingness to go above and beyond! The team consists of the following members: Meggan
Choate, Morgan Murphy, Matthew Garneau, Tyler Peterson, Seth Will, Brandon Khan, Ian Vokoun, and Ben Davis.
THIRD GRADE NAVIGATORS AND FOURTH GRADE GOING PLACES: INTERMEDIATE
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL is 23 MEMBERS STRONG! These young leaders are
responsible for coordinating two Fun Days for the East Side of campus, PK-3 through 5th grade.
After much discussion and final voting, they are ready to introduce their first Fun Day. It will be
a BEACH PARTY DAY on Thursday, October 24th. Suggested clothing and
accessory ideas for the day include: flip-flops (can only be worn in the classroom), water shoes,
bermuda shorts, sunglasses, captain’s hats, tie-dyed shirts, Hawaiian dresses, leis, beach towels.
Please note all clothing must meet Friday dress code expectations. As a special treat, we will have a section of the
big field reserved during recess for beach volleyball and the limbo. Join us as we say goodbye to summer
and hello to fall! Look for the signs all over the East Side of campus.
PRE-K4 AND KINDERGARTEN marked an end to a successful unit of inquiry entitled,
“How We Organize Ourselves: Communities Work Together”, with our Community
Helpers Commute. The students traveled to La Segunda bakery, where they toured the
facility and even sampled some tasty treats. The children were guided through the process of
how they make the bread and other bakery items that are delivered and sold in many Bay area
stores and restaurants. From there, they went to the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office
Aviation Field. Through demonstrations, tours and exploration, the students gained extensive knowledge of the roles
the Sherriff’s department pilots, training dogs, and handlers play in keeping our community safe. The students were
even given the opportunity to see up-close and personal, a Sherriff’s helicopter come in for a landing. Seeing some
of our community helpers in action helped to solidify their inquiry into the contributions community helpers make in
our lives.

EVENT CHAIRS CAROLYN AULICINO AND KERRY LATHER: THE FLASH MOB SURPRISE at
our Monday Morning Meeting was amazing. We absolutely love how Kacy “needed to remember something” that led to
the start…awesome!
We wanted to share that the Flash Mob was a Teacher Donation and brilliant idea, by Mrs. Ferlita, at the Big Event 2013;
so each of those lucky dancers can thank their parents for purchasing their spot for the performance and all of the Saturday
dance practices. A huge thanks to the amazing dance team of Mrs. Lisa Ferlita, Ms. Allie Rivera, Mrs. Jeanne Rivera and
Ms. Brooke Weiss. Together, they made the magic happen. We are so lucky to have so many talented and generous
people working together to benefit our children and our school! Thanks to you all!

HIGHLIGHTS!!! (continued from page 2)
Middle School Social Studies simulates American History by
engaging students in a Lincoln-Douglas Debate format:
When you are trying to make an informed decision, do you take multiple
perspectives into account? That was the goal in 8th grade American History classes last week as they
conducted a debate. Each student represented real historical characters from the American Revolution. Some of
the historical figures the students portrayed were Thomas Paine, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, King George
III, Margaret Shippen Arnold, and Thomas Hutchinson. Students took different perspectives like land owner,
merchants, and members of Parliament. The students were provided with materials that gave personal
perspectives in order to create a name plate with a quote and a propaganda slogan to display during the debate.
The students wrote facts to sway people to their side. Each side met before the debate to decide who would take
certain roles during the debate, like introduction, cross examination or answering specific questions. They
worked as a team to put together a strategy to present the strongest argument. The students were trying to get
the neutral colonists to choose a side; Loyalists or Patriots. The neutralists had all the power since their vote at
the end of the debate declared a winner. The students experienced a formal Lincoln – Douglas Debate Format,
to see what makes a debate different than an argument. Below is a SAMPLE of their follow-up writing
assignment as they reflected on the experience: For example:
1. Factual - At the Start of the American Revolution, what were the view points of the Patriots and the
Loyalists? Why were some people neutral?
2. Conceptual - How does a person's role in society reflect their perspective in a debate?
3. Debatable - Should the 13 colonies declare independence from Britain?
COMING IN NEXT WEEK’S HEADS’ LETTER:
1. TEACHERS USE FRIDAY IN-SERVICE DAY TO LEARN ABOUT NEW AREAS, REVIEW
CURRENT LEARNINGS, AND TO STRENGHTEN CURRENT STRATEGIES THROUGH
WORKSHOPS, CONFERENCES AND/OR TEAMWORK.
2. 71 CORBETT PREP FACUTY AND ADMINISTRATION ENROLL THIS SEMESTER IN THE
HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION’S WIDE WORLD ON-LINE HIGHLY
ACCLAIMED COURSE: “TEACHING FOR UNDERSTANDING.” IT’S AMAZING! (and a lot of
work!!!) 
3. CORBETT PREP TO USE E-READERS TO DECREASE DISTRACTIONS AND INCREASE
READING FOCUS THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH BARNES AND NOBLE. LOOK FOR THE
INFORMATION FOR THIRD THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE.
4. THANK YOU PFA and ANNUAL GIVING…YOUR CONTINUED GENEROSITY ALLOWS THE
ABUNDANCE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY TO BE ADDED.

Ambassadors Offer a Warm Welcome to Corbett Prep Visitors
Student ambassadors from the Middle School greeted prospective families, gave tours and answered questions at the first Admissions
Open House of the school year. The ambassadors also help at Grandparents’ Day and other school events.
Oct. 9, 2013 (TAMPA, Fla.) – The students who volunteer as ambassadors for Corbett Preparatory
School of IDS know how much first impressions matter.
They were among the first faces prospective families saw when they arrived for the Admissions Open
House held earlier this month. Poised and smiling, the group was quick to offer help to newcomers on
campus. Ambassadors gave directions, led tours and fielded questions, sharing what they love about
their school and developing leadership skills in the process.
Middle School students may sign up for the ambassador program in seventh and eighth grade. They help
at the Admissions Open Houses, Grandparents’ Day and other important school events. The ambassador
program allows guests to see Corbett Prep through students’ eyes. It also gives the students a chance to
polish public speaking and leadership skills that will come in handy when they interview at high schools
and colleges.
“I’ve always taken pride in being a leader,” says Kiran Khetarpal, a seventh grader. “I want as much
experience as I can.”
For eighth grader Taylor Wooldridge, being an ambassador lets her gain practice talking to different
people in a variety of situations. Taylor, who was an ambassador last year as well, also likes the chance
to show visitors the ways Corbett Prep classes go above and beyond traditional school assignments.
Please turn over for the rest of the article.
Ambassadors Offer a Warm Welcome to Corbett Prep Visitors
The story is continued here.
The ambassadors prepared with Headmaster Dr. Joyce
Burick Swarzman before the Open House by
demonstrating the power of confidence, poise and
integrity. They also talked about projecting a positive
presence.
Seventh grader Ben Davis says he is happy to participate
in the ambassador program.
“I like to be a leader and help people,” Ben says. “I
know how amazing a school this is. I want them to
experience the same thing I experienced.”
Seventh and eighth graders volunteer to be ambassadors,
gaining leadership experience.
