To that end I wish to address two basic questions about Bible study: Why study the Bible? This concept is commonly referred to as the “End Times” or “Last Days.” In this field of study, there is a minefield of disinformation, misunderstandings and myths concerning many future events: •The Rapture •Does the Church go through the “Great Tribulation”? •Is there a literal “Millennium”? •Does the Church “replace” Israel? •What happened to the Davidic Covenant? •Is Everyone in Heaven equal? •Under Grace, does behavior matter? Dr. Chuck Missler sheds light on these and some of the widely accepted myths surrounding some of the most important events on our horizon. 4 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE FROM THE EDITOR Ron Matsen Under Rower, K-House & KI DEAR FRIENDS I n this month’s edition of the Personal Update news journal we continue to look at the importance of discerning what is truth, the foundation of truth, being an ambassador of our Lord and Saviour and the importance of studying the Word, breathed from the One that declared the end from the beginning. We thank you for all your support and prayers for Chuck as his health continues to improve. Sadly, Chuck’s second son Mark Jay Missler, 54, of Mooresville, NC, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2016. He was born in California to Chuck and the late Nancy Klitten Missler. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lisette Missler; son, Mason Missler; sisters, Lisa Bright and Meshell Missler. Mark loved serving his community. He was a Realtor/Broker and a member of the Cove Church where he played drums in the band. Mark was a volunteer for the Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department for over 15 years, Captain of the Marine Unit, head of the Dive Team and a member of the Board of Directors. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed. As Chuck reiterated during our weekly live Q&A broadcast on Feb 10th (freely available on tv.khouse.org or our YouTube channel), while discussing Nancy and Mark’s passing, getting though any circumstance or situation, “It’s nothing more than a trust in Him.” God bless you, Ron Matsen Mark Missler Oct 10, 1961 - Feb 4, 2016 Under Rower, K-House & KI VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 5 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 THE TRUTH ABOUT TRUTH - PART 2 Chris Corlett Conference Speaker L EVIDENCE OF GOOD EVIDENCE ast month’s Personal Update article introduced the reader to “Correspondence Truth,” which requires that any truth corresponds to reality or fact(s) Bertrand Russell states, “Although truth and falsehood are properties of beliefs, they are properties dependent upon the relations of the beliefs to other things, not upon any internal quality of the beliefs.” Truth and falsehood, rather than being inherent to the assertion, are determined by supporting data and information. To conclude otherwise risks a kind of circular reasoning that unfortunately pervades throughout what passes for reasoning today. Legal professionals call 6 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE these facts “evidence” and enter such evidence into the court record from which they make their case. Many familiar books evoke this “case from evidence structure” such as Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell and The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. Bob Cornuke, a regular speaker at our Strategic Perspective International Conference in Idaho, includes the following on his website for the BASE Institute: “We acknowledge (the Bible) as our reliable standard of truth. Using the Bible and other historic sources, coupled with scholarly research supported by archaeological evidence, BASE endeavors to dispel the notion that the Bible is a collection of fables and legend.” 1 BIO Chris Corlett, Conference Speaker Chris and his wife of nearly 30 years host regional events and conferences serving primarily Northeastern United States and South-eastern Canada. He speaks and writes on many topics and relies on his background in public education as a teacher and curriculum writer for much of his presentations and publications. He presented at the Strategic Perspectives conferences on the topic of “Education as the Everyman Strategic Perspective” and currently moderates a forum on Ed u c a t i o n a va i l a b l e through KI members’ dashboard. The “Federal Rules of Evidence”2 codify sixtyseven individual rules grouped into eleven articles which judges and lawyers meticulously master if they want to apply them in the courtrooms in which they practice. Evidence must Neither this article nor this author claim this sort of scholarship. It is enough to determine whether be both reliable evidence is good evidence to remember this: and relevant. “Evidence must be both reliable and relevant.” Dr. Missler captures this in one of his vignettes he peppers throughout his teachings and it goes something like this – When confronted by the claim of the remarkable accuracy of an atomic clock, he asked the two questions which needed to be asked: “How do we know?” and “Why do we care?” The first question explores the reliability of the data and the second question All scripture is given requires even trustworthy data to be by inspiration of God, useful and applicable. The Bible meets this dual test of evidence. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable 1 http://www.baseinstitute.org/ 2 https://www.law.cornell.edu/rules/fre and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 7 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”3 Beyond this textual claim, its prophetic accuracy (e.g., The Seventy Weeks of Daniel, The Virgin Birth), its heptadic structure and its historical accuracy are among the many compelling reasons to conclude the Bible is reliable. And Paul lists four ways – doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness – in which it is relevant regardless of the century in which it is read. Isaiah asserts, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”4 There is evidence for the Bible as “an integrated message system from outside our time domain.” The Bible is itself a valuable piece of evidence when supporting an assertion or claim. Consider the following. Shortly after the United States Supreme Court’s decision regarding homosexual marriage,5 I found myself in a conversation among my office colleagues. When they asked me my opinion on the ruling, my response went something like this. “What you consider a contract, I call a covenant. What you consider secular, I view as sacred. So we already diverge on the very nature of marriage. More than anything, the Supreme Court position relies on the sufficiency of a majority when instead my position relies on the necessity of an Authority. And I want to enter into evidence a document to which you will likely object. I refer to the Holy Bible.” Among these “legal eagles” I had no better argument than one based on the evidence found in Genesis 2:24, Mark 10:7-8 and Ephesians 5:31. “Therefore shall a man 3 2 Timothy 3:16 4 Isaiah 40:8 5 http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/14-556_3204.pdf 8 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” I wanted nothing more than to “enter into evidence” these passages. (It is interesting to note there are (two or) three witnesses6 – Moses, Jesus and Paul!) Had the conversation been in a courtroom instead of the break room, a judge would have addressed their objections to my reliance on the Holy Bible as evidence. “Sustained!” “Overruled!” Enough television shows and movies are set in courtrooms for us to be familiar with this process even if we are not proficient. But we need a familiarity and a functionality when we are practicing “contending earnestly for the faith” in the courtrooms in which we find ourselves – our workplaces, our homes, our neighborhoods and even our churches. Let’s take a look at some simple reliability tests that you can apply when reading an article or hearing a news clip. Is the evidence based on eyewitness testimony or on secondhand information? The apostles had as a distinctive that each was Testimony loses an eyewitness to the Resurrection. reliability when it is (See Acts 1:21-22) Testimony loses from a second (or reliability when it is from a second third!) hand source. (or third!) hand source. This is This is often referred often referred to as hearsay when to as hearsay when it it applies to a conversation outside the courtroom. Where eyewitness applies to a conversation testimony is not available, multiple outside the courtroom. 6 Deuteronomy 19:15 VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 9 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 sources confirming the claim become more important. We hear of horrific crimes on the news and these stories often cite “multiple eyewitnesses” of the tragedy. Of course, we have no sense of the credibility of these eyewitnesses or whether they are qualified to render relevant testimony. In a courtroom, whether entering testimony or a document, the court requires a foundation be laid first. Laying a foundation is “(t) he act of demonstrating to a judge that a piece of evidence a litigant would like to introduce meets evidence rules requirements concerning authenticity and trustworthiness. For example, a medical report cannot be introduced unless the physician who wrote it testifies that he wrote it; and a photograph must be authenticated by the photographer or by testimony that it truly reflects a particular place or event. Even after a proper foundation is laid, however, evidence can still be excluded if, for example, it is not relevant to the point for which it is being offered.”7 At the very least we need to insist on eyewitness testimony or multiple testimony from sources both known and trusted. Relevance is often in the eye of the beholder and so common is the habit to reject as irrelevant the information which does not support our position that this tendency is named. Confirmation bias is readily seen by those who rely on one news source. I have friends who swear by Fox News and others who swear at it! NPR for some of my acquaintances stands for National Public Radio while others insist it stands for No Point in Regarding! I suggest that information that is confirmed by both sources is likely the most reliable and, where they differ, the “whole truth and nothing but the truth” is likely found by combining both sources. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” So truth corresponds to evidence and that evidence must be both relevant and reliable. Next time we will look at The Rhetoric on Rhetoric and examine how to make a convincing argument supporting your position. In the meantime, you might want to look at our featured products. It has been outlawed, confiscated and burned at different times and places in history. It has been smuggled into jail cells and across borders. John Huss was burned at the stake for teaching from the Bible as the final authority for the Church over any earthly church rulers. William Tyndale was strangled and burned for translating VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 13 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 the Bible into English. Every week, millions of Christians gather to discuss its words, even as “higher” critics attempt to explain it through the lens of metaphysical naturalism. What we believe about the Bible can be the most important, central issue in our lives, threading its way into the very fabric of who we are and how we live each day. Where did the Bible come from? Why do we believe its origin is supernatural? Who defined the canon of Scripture? Most importantly, is the Bible the Word of God? You and I are gambling our eternity on the answer to that last question. Why do we believe God is the author of the Bible, and can each one of us defend that belief? Dark times are on the horizon, and it is increasingly important that we learn to live by faith. Where we place our faith fully depends on how we view the Scriptures. Over the past 50 years, I have been privileged to travel around the world and talk to people about the Word of God and the saving power of Jesus Christ. Of course, I always get a lot of questions about the Bible. People ask me: “Chuck, how do I know the Bible is the Word of God?” “How do I know the Bible is true and accurate?” “How did we even get the Bible we have today?” “Which version of the Bible is the best?” The purpose of our briefing pack How We Got Our Bible, now available in book format, is to deal with these questions and to assure its readers that the Bible is reliable, accurate, and applicable to the world today. Through it’s pages, we will explore some lesser-known facts about the Bible and take common knowledge about its pages to a deeper level. We will defend the authenticity of the Bible as the Word of God so that you, dear reader, might equip others to do the same. The Word of God is a miracle the Lord has given to us so that we may know Him better and live our lives according to Truth. 14 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE The Nature of Reality Within recent years, many members of Protestant denominational churches and the Roman Catholic Church have turned away from the Bible as the fully inspired Word of God. We hear arguments that the Bible contradicts itself or that it contradicts the “truths” of modern culture and science. Many people say the Bible contains the Word of God, but cannot be relied on to be the Word of God in all its entirety. This is a key issue. Is the Bible really true? Two World Views Ultimately, there are two basic world views we can hold. One view regards everything we experience as the result of some cosmic accident. “In the Beginning there was nothing, and then it exploded.” The other view is that everything we experience is the deliberate result of a Creator. Of course, there are numerous variations on each of these views, but each of us must decide where we will place our trust. Each of these world views holds possible solutions to the biggest puzzles of life: • Who am I? • Where did I come from? • Where am I going? • To whom am I accountable? It is ultimately important that we find the true answers to these questions. VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 15 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 Rejection of Authority You and I live in a time of rebellion and self-worship. Parental and marital authority are challenged in the homes and courts. Political, academic and ecclesiastical authority are challenged across the land. Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Genesis 3:1 Here, near the very beginning, we are introduced to Satan, the serpent, our adversary, and the first thing we see him do is question God’s Word. “Yea, hath God said?” His next step is to slander God’s character with straight denial. “Ye shall not surely die,” (Gen 3:4). Thus, Satan encouraged the rejection of God’s authority at the very beginning, while humanity was yet in its infancy. Eve failed to trust God, Adam followed her in directly disobeying what God had told him, and humankind lost everything as a result. We find the same pattern today. A number of social indicators deteriorate rapidly after 1963 in the United States. There were fewer than 10 births per 1000 unmarried teen women (ages 15-19) prior to 1947, and between 1955 and 1964, the number remained steadily between 15 and 16.1 After 1964, however, the numbers of teenagers giving birth out of wedlock climbed steadily during the next 30 years to more than 46 births per 1000 teen women in 1994.2 Divorce rates escalated, families broke up, crime rates rose, and the acceptance of homosexuality became commonplace. As of 2015, more than 58 million unborn children have been murdered in the United States because they were considered inconvenient. Fifty-eight million. That is nearly ten times the number of Jewish victims in the Holocaust. It’s noteworthy that in 1963, as a result of the combined court cases Abington School District v. Schempp and Murray v. Curlett, the U.S. Supreme Court banned school-led reading of the Bible and recital of the Lord’s Prayer. These court cases alleged to uphold the principles of 1 CDC. (2001). As we choose our own way over God’s way, we’re losing everything. There is little dignity in divorce or high crime rates. It is ironic that the elements we most desire in life are rarely attained through our own weak wisdom and fleshly desires. After trying our own methods, over and over again we have had to learn that we experience human dignity and true freedom only through moral obedience and accountability to the Creator who fashioned human beings for a high spiritual destiny. Facing the Skeptics Skeptics have brutally attacked the Bible throughout history, and during the past century it has become popular among intellectuals to regard the Bible as merely a conglomeration of Jewish writings. It’s considered respectable to dispute the authorship of the books of the Bible and to disregard fulfilled prophecy as events reported after-the-fact. VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 17 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 In 1898, Hermann Schultz, professor of Theology at the University of Gottingen, declared: Of the legendary character of the pre-Mosaic narrators, the time of which they treat is a sufficient proof. It was a time prior to all knowledge of writing, a time separated by an interval of more than four hundred years, of which there is absolutely no history.3 Yet, the patriarchal accounts in the Bible have been corroborated by archeological evidence.4 The information we have of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob matches the culture we know of that time in history.5 Job, the contemporary of Abraham, had the ability to write.6 Sumerian cuneiform writing certainly predates Moses by much more than 400 years; Ira Spar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that, “By the middle of the third millennium B.C., cuneiform primarily written on clay tablets was used for a vast array of economic, religious, political, literary, and scholarly documents.”7 The old criticism that no written language existed in Moses’ day has been proven to be false.8 The theories that the Gospels and the Epistles were written in the second century, over a hundred years after the fact, have been shredded and refuted by archeological discoveries, documentary discoveries and competent analysis.9 The common skeptical assertions thrown about in “academic” circles can The old criticism that no written language be shown to be short-sighted. John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16 VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 19 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 2 Timothy 3:16 is one of these significant “3:16” verses – a little fact that makes it easy to remember its address. This particular verse gives us a foundational message, and we should read it carefully and take it to heart: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” Note this verse says, “All Scripture” – not just certain passages that we might select because we like them best. If we accept only those parts of the Bible that suit us and reject the others, then we are believing in ourselves and our own (unreliable) judgment rather than in the Scripture. The word “inspiration” in the Greek, θεόπνευστος - theopneustos means “God-breathed.” That is, the Scriptures were not just influenced by good ideas about God; they were actually infused into human beings by the Spirit of God, who breathed into the hearts and minds of the Bible’s authors. All Scripture “is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction.” Doctrine is about teaching correct understanding while reproof is involved in addressing wrong conduct and correction deals with wrong understanding. As we study the epistles of Paul, for example, we discover that while Romans is a doctrinal statement of Soteriology (the study of salvation), 1 Corinthians was sent to reprove wrong conduct and Galatians to correct wrong doctrine. Again, Ephesians presents the doctrine of Ecclesiology (the study of this mystical thing we call the “Church”), while Philippians then presents the reproof and Colossians presents the correction for the Church. 1 and 2 Thessalonians present the doctrine of Eschatology (the study of the last things), and 1 and 2 Peter and Revelation continue that theme. The more we study the Bible, the more we discover that it’s very well organized specifically for its purposes. It is essential to understanding the Book of Revelation and other related passages. 24 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE BRIEFINGPACKS Behold a White Horse: The Coming World Leader The final world dictator seeking global domination will also be an “Assyrian,” who is here characterized by a bow and riding a white horse. It is interesting how many confuse this counterfeit with the rider of the white horse in Revelation 19. Behold a White Horse explores the career of the first of these “Four Horsemen” who seems to have at least 33 titles in the Old Testament and 13 in the New Testament and the common term “AntiChrist” really isn’t one of them. We also explore the only physical description of him in the Scripture! Behold a Red Horse: Wars and Rumors of Wars Dr. Chuck Missler, an honor graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, with an international background including three decade’s experience in the board rooms of the defense industry, reviews the major Biblical references to warfare, the trends in modern weapons technology, and some of the current preparations for war among the major powers. Behold a Black Horse: Economic Upheaval and Famine Most famines are the direct results of government’s deliberate decisions. Germany sank into the most severe hyperinflationary period in recorded history after printing 1.3 trillion marks: that translates to about 4 trillion in today’s dollars. Ironically, that is almost exactly the same amount of money the United States government has printed since 2008. Behold a Livid Horse: Emergent Diseases and Biochemical Warfare Why are previously conquered diseases now making a comeback? How real is the threat of biological terrorism? Why is it more dangerous than chemical terrorism? Was the AIDS virus deliberately designed? By whom? And why? Is there any truth behind an agenda to control (and reduce) the world’s population? By whom? And why? Who are the two riders associated with the Livid Horse? How do they differ? VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 25 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 H RADICAL RESURRECTION i Everyone! This year, on March 27th, Christians all over the world will be celebrating Resurrection Sunday, the day our Lord and Savior after being crucified on the cross was dead in the grave for three days and nights and miraculously came back to life! Believing in the resurrection of Christ is essential to the Christian faith. The Apostle Paul says it best in 1 Corinthians 15:14-15, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ…” The same power that resurrected Jesus is the same power given to every believer by the Holy Spirit at his new birth—it is part of the Life of God that He has instilled and sealed in our hearts. That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death” (Philippians 3:10). So as Christians, how does believing and understanding Christ’s resurrection power affect our daily life? How is His resurrection power significant in our marriages, our families, our jobs? How does it affect our busy and crazy lifestyles? Understanding this supernatural power which resides in every Christian is explained in detail in “The Kingdom, Power and Glory” teaching series. Beloved, the power of the resurrection is that Jesus is alive— HE breathes into us His new Spirit, empowering us as His witnesses. This year, let’s make 2016 a year where we are participating, partaking and sharing God’s resurrection power with our fellow believers and those who haven’t come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The situation regarding the doctrine of the Rapture is painfully similar to the famous quote by Dr. Richard Feynman, speaking of quantum physics: I think it is safe to say that no one understands quantum mechanics... in fact, it is often stated of all the theories proposed in this century, the silliest is quantum theory. Some say that the only thing that quantum theory has going for it, in fact, is that it is unquestionably correct. © Copyright 2015 Koinonia House P.O. Where does this strange view come from? Is the term “rapture” even in the Bible? MISSLER THE RAPTURE DR. CHUCK MISSLER Dr. Chuck Missler COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE PART 2 Ron Matsen Under Rower, Koinonia Institute I END-TIMES SURVIVAL GUIDE n the February edition of Personal Update News Journal I pointed out that Jesus warned in His Olivet Discourse saying, “Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.1 In both his letter to Timothy and the Thessalonians the apostle Paul warns them “in latter times that “in latter times some will depart from the some will depart faith,” 2 and “that Day will not come unless the from the faith,” falling away comes first.” 3 In both references Paul is writing about apostasy. BIO The Antidote for Apostasy I listed four simple steps to survive in this age of deceit you need to: 1) Stay Connected 2) Stay Sharp 3) Stay on Target 4) Stay in God’s Word I think it is safe to say that most people who would call themselves Christians would consider some sort of Bible study an essential element of their life. To that end I wish to address two basic questions about Bible study: 1) Why study the Bible? 2) How should we study the Bible? Ron Matsen, Under-rower, Kononia House and Koinonia Institute With over 40 years in the pastoral ministry, Ron has taught verseby-verse through the Bi b l e , h o s t e d a l i ve 2-hour TV programme broadcast across Europe for more than 2 years, and taught extensively on the subjects of evangelism, leadership, and end-times topics. Although Ron and his wife are native Californians, they moved to England in 1992 and in 2011 immigrated to New Zealand where they now partner with Chuck Missler at the ministry base, The River Lodge. 1 Matthew 24:11, 12 2 2 Timothy 4:1, 2 3 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4 VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 29 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 Why Study the Bible? 1. We learn how to please God. Psalm 119:9-16 tells us, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have declared all the judgments of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.” Notice the full package of God’s instructions: • Statutes = God’s Commandment • Judgments = God’s Rewards • Testimonies = Biblical Examples • Precepts = Doctrines • Ways = Direction • Statutes (Will) = Protection • Word = Instruction 2. We learn about Jesus From cover to cover, the Bible ultimately teaches us about Jesus Christ. Quoting from Psalm 40:7 the writer to the Hebrews says, “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come - In the volume of the book it is written of Me - To do Your will, O God.’” 4 Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” 5 4 Hebrews 10:7 5 John 5:39 30 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE 3. We learn how to combat deception The apostle Paul warn Timothy, “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out For the time will come of season. Convince, rebuke, when they will not exhort, with all longsuffering endure sound doctrine, and teaching. For the time will come when they will but according to their not endure sound doctrine, own desires, because but according to their own they have itching ears... desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”6 How Should We Study the Bible? There are many different methods being practised and many different models to follow. The apostle Paul gave us an example of his style of teaching. There are three major forms of Bible teaching: 1. Teaching FROM the Bible This is the most common form of Bible study found in the church today. It is generally topical or thematic. This is also the basis of Systematic Theology. Here the Bible is used as a resource library to find references that present a particular point of view. They start with a statement (or topic) and search the Scriptures to back up their presupposed position. The danger here is that you can specialize on only those subjects you wish to hear about and miss the whole counsel of God. 2. Teaching ABOUT the Bible Generally these are historic surveys where the Bible is treated like any other book in the world. During these types of Bible studies they examine the “stories” of the Bible without teaching 6 2 Timothy 4:1-4 VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 | 31 COVER CONTENTS ORDER Personal UPDATE | MARCH 2016 the “truths” of the Bible. The danger here is you no longer see the Bible as anything other than a cherished religious book which is comparable to many other religious writings. 3. Teaching THE Bible This is a holistic approach to understanding the Bible. After Israel returned from their captivity in Babylon, Israel’s revival under Ezra began by reading the whole Word of God.7 Before the Ephesian elders Paul states, “…You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.”8 Today we would understand that to mean verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, book-by-book study of the entire Bible. Isaiah’s Indictment of Israel gives us a strong clue as to the best way to gain real spiritual insight. “Whom will He teach knowledge? And whom will He make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.” 9 The advantages to this type of Bible study are many: • It is the only logical way to read a letter or book. • It keeps the Text within its Context. Remember, “A Text without a Context is a Pretext.” 7 Nehemiah 8:1-7 8 Acts 20:18-27 9 Isaiah 28:9, 10 32 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 3 COVER CONTENTS ORDER MARCH 2016 | Personal UPDATE • It demands Exegesis (reading FROM the Word) rather than Eisegesis (reading INTO the Word). In other words, you let the text within its context speak for itself. • It prevents “Hobby Horse” type Bible study. This is a real problem with false teachers that twist the Scriptures to achieve their own goals. • It forces the Bible student to examine ALL of the doctrines in Scripture. • It gives a balanced view of God’s Word. May you be truly fruitful in your study of God’s Word.
