LARS EDLUND AND TOMAS TRANSTRÖMER.
L
ars Edlund (b.in 1922) began in
the 60s a pioneering pedagogical
career at the Royal College of Music
in Stockholm. Methodical new thinking
coupled with artistic consciousness
would make his development unique.
Edlund has never been loyal to any
“ism”, never belonged to a group. He has
simply been himself, following his own
path, polishing an expressive and singing
compositional language, often free of
tonality but occasionally with tonal goals.
A journey through the works of Lars Edlund with an accent on the choral pieces
reveals great breadth with regard to size
and musical expression as well as to the
level of technical difficulty. His language
may be abstract, but he has the ability to
use abstractions to communicate powerful emotions.
There are several common denominators uniting Tomas Tranströmer and Lars
Edlund: both have a strong spiritual dimension; the methaphorical technique of
Tranströmer can be seen even in Lars
Ikoner
Lars Edlund
Edlund; and both have been forced to interrupt their creation due to sickness.
Edlund’s suite for choir and orchestra
Ikoner (Icons) (1994) was composed to
poetry from the collections “Det vilda torget” and “För levande och döda”. Paradiso was finished during 1995/96 and
consists of three songs from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Två Dikter (1970) is composed to two poems by Östen Sjöstrand.
The setting is for choir and piano with a
soprano solo in the second song. Näverbitar (1998) was commissioned by the
Swedish Choral Association, Sveriges
Sångarförbund and the bank Föreningssparbanken. Their vision was a work in
the spirit of Lars-Erik Larsson’s Förklädd
Gud, i. e. for choir, orchestra and soloists
and also be feasible for amateur choirs.
Edlund chose poems from Gunnar Ekelöf’s “Non serviam” called Painted on
Birchbark, where he captured six different views of the Lapland landscape, both
of nature and people.

New music leaders
From February 1st, Björn Stålne has
taken over the position as the Director of
Rikskonserter, The Swedish Concert Institute, following on from Martin Martinsson who has since moved to Malmö
to head up the regional music foundation
in the south of Sweden. Björn Stålne has
had substantial experience working in
the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation as
the Head of the Music Department (P2,
for classical music) and as a music journalist. Since last year he was the Director
of the University College of Opera in
Stockholm.
Stefan Parkman has taken over the
artistic responsibility for the world famous Swedish Radio choir from Tönu
Kaljuste. He has held many important positions both within Sweden and outside.
For eleven years he was the leader of the
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Choir and
has been the principal conductor of the
Danish Radio Choir. He has also been
working in Germany and as a solo singer
himself.
Moving next to the Royal Swedish
Academy of Music there is now a new director or Permanent Secretary as the title
is officially-known. Bengt Holmstrand
has left after many years’ service and Åke
Holmquist has taken assumed the post.
Åke Holmquist served as the director of
the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra for more than 10 years and before
that he was the Programme Director for
Rikskonserter, The Swedish Concert Institute.

Rätten till
menuetten
That a composer
or a writer or an
artist is the owner
of the contents of
that which he has
produced – not
only of the object
itself – is a concept that is now
well-established
after having been given much consideration over many centuries. The sinuous
way in which the idea of performing
rights has taken through history is told in
this book by Gunnar Petri, Managing
Director of STIM, the Swedish Performing Rights Society and in a way which
invites the reader to learn about the subject’s pivotal moments.

Re-designed front page
The home page of our website
(www.mic.stim.se) has recently undergone a major change resulting in you
being able to receive news regularly via
either the Swedish or the English versions. We have also introduced a new
navigator to make it easier to find all the
publicly available material on the site.
There are several reasons why we are
making this change now. Firstly we
would like to provide everybody with
news about Swedish music. It will now
be easier for our readers to find about
the latest depositions of manuscripts,
about the latest releases on Phono
Suecia and Edition Suecia and secondly
it will also be easier for us to publish the
news using the Lotus Notes technique.

Please send us your views on the
changes to our general e-mail address
[email protected]. Your views will form
the base for future changes, so they are
important. We would also very much
like to receive your e-mail address so
that in the future we can easily remind
you about news relating to the website.
So even if you do not have specific
viewpoints to make, drop us a line by
e-mail confirming that you do not mind
getting reminders from us. Thank you
in advance for your co-operation!
We will continue also to print, at least during 2001, our newsletter, but we have
plans to concentrate on the web news service from 2002.
Staff changes
at the Swedish MIC
Anna Frisk has left the centre to take up
another appointment and her successor,
as producer for the anthology Musica
Sveciae Modern Classics is Marie Wisén.
Marie has, like Anna before her, been
working with the original Musica Sveciae

Polar Music
Prize 2001
The Polar Music Prize presented by the
Stig Anderson Music Prize Fund of the
Royal Swedish Academy of Music has
been awarded in 2001 to three winners
for the first time. They are the American
composer Burt Bacharach, the engineer
Robert Moog and the German composer
Karlheinz Stockhausen. The prize –
1,000,000 Swedish kronor to each – is
one of the most substantial and prestigious music prizes in the world and will
be given for the 10th time to the prize
winners at a ceremony to be held in
Stockholm on May 14th by the King of
Sweden.
Burt Bacharach, composer, arranger,
record producer and pianist, is being
awarded the Polar Music Prize for his
achievements as an architect of contemporary music. He has been a principal
player on the musical scene ever since his
debut in the late 1950s, producing a host
of timeless classics stemming from his infallible feeling for powerful, memorable
and unmistakably personal melodies and
for brilliantly designed harmony.
Robert Moog is awarded the prize for
his design of the MiniMoog, the first
compact, easy-to-use synthesizer, which
paved the way to the realm of electronic
sounds that has revolutionised all genres
of music during the past half-century. He
is still developing instruments but his first
inventions have since been further developed by Roland, Sony and other producers of modern synthesizers.
Karlheinz Stockhausen is awarded the
prize for a career as a composer that has
been characterized by impeccable integrity and never-ceasing creativity, and for
having stood at the forefront of musical
development for fifty years. His list of
works is very comprehensive (285 to
date) and he has also published books
which have a worldwide reputation and
are of the greatest importance.
MARKNADSTIDNING B
Lars Johan Werle
receives
Atterberg Prize
Swedish
Gramophone
Prize for
Phono Suecia
Seven Pieces – compositions by
Lennart Åberg and featuring Peter
Erskine, Bobo Stenson and Palle
Danielsson – has been awarded the
Swedish Gramophone Award for
2000 in the category of Jazz Album of
the Year (PSCD118).
Lars Johan Werle has been awarded the
Atterberg Prize for the year 2000. The jury’s motivation is as follows: “Ever since
the international music days in Bilthoven
in 1960, where Lars Johan Werle won first
prize in all categories for his string quartet Pentagram, Lars Johan Werle has been
one of our most acclaimed composers.
Due to his undogmatic and creative production, above all in the fields of musical
drama and choral music, Werle has today
a firm place in Swedish musical life. Werle has also been involved in political activity concerning music and has worked to
improve his colleagues’ situation. His pedagogical work with opera students in
Sweden and abroad has also contributed
to the understanding of new musical drama.”
The prize was presented at the regular
ceremony on December 17th at STIM. At
the same event, the writer Oscar Hedlund was awarded STIM’s Author’s
Award.
