DAY 1: HEADWATERS
Day 3: york
Headwaters has hundreds of kilometres of scenic trails for cyclists,
hikers and horseback riders of every level. Surrounded by rolling
hills and panoramic rural landscapes, the trails of Headwaters are
even more breathtaking than the drive into the region.
Amble down Newmarket’s Historic Main
Street and enjoy a hearty breakfast on the
patio at The Maids’ Cottage. Be sure to
get one of their famous butter tarts for the
road. Spend the day taking in Newmarket’s
one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants and pubs,
or go on a geocaching adventure in one
of York Region’s forests. The Bendor and
Graves Tract is an excellent place to start
your geocaching hunt. Part of The Oak
Ridges Moraine, this 201-acre trail has a variety of pine, white spruce, European larch,
eastern cedar and hemlock trees to admire
on your hike.
The Hampton Inn & Suites will be the ideal home base for your
stay. Located in Bolton, this hotel features 95 guest rooms and
suites, an indoor pool and fitness centre, and easy access to the
region’s most impressive trails.
A 15-minute drive north will take you to Albion Hills Conservation Area. Here, you will experience some of the most spectacular
mountain biking in southern Ontario, with more than 50 kilometres
of trails waiting to be explored.
After an active day on the trails, gear down and refuel at Cheeks
Homemade Burgers & Good Eats, a local favourite with great food
and friendly service. Order a homemade burger and fries with a
pint of local craft beer. After dinner, take an evening stroll through
Bolton’s quaint downtown before retreating to your hotel to recharge for another day in Headwaters.
Day 2: Headwaters
Rise with the sun on day two and fuel up with a complimentary
breakfast at the hotel. Or head west for fresh-baked breakfast
goods and an Americano from Gabe’s Country Bake Shoppe. Buy
some snacks and a hearty sandwich from the deli counter and
you’re set to hit the Caledon Trailway.
This 35-kilometre, multi-use trail crosses some of the most ecologically significant landscapes in Ontario such as the Humber and
Credit Rivers, the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Niagara Escarpment.
This scenic trail will appeal to hikers, horseback riders and cyclists,
and is an essential part of every visit to Headwaters.
Before returning to Bolton, check out Albion Orchards Apple Farm
& Country Market. Open daily all summer, this country store has
a wide array of fresh Ontario produce, cider, cheese, handmade
preserves and gift baskets to take home and share with friends.
Treat yourself to dinner at Sheraton Parkway Toronto North’s Crave Restaurant.
This upscale-casual restaurant combines
modern decor and an international menu
sure to satisfy any craving. Check-in to your
elegant room and take advantage of luxury
amenities such as two indoor pools, an
outdoor saltwater pool, squash, badminton
and basketball courts, whirlpools, steam
rooms and a fitness centre and spa.
Day 4: york
Take a short drive to Gallucci Winery, a
family-run vine-to-bottle winery. Sit on the
picturesque bistro patio overlooking the
vineyard and order a deli and cheese board,
fresh panini, pizza or salad as you relax in
the summer sun. Enjoy another tasting at
nearby Applewood Farm and Winery, and
take home a bottle or two of Applewood’s
award-winning fruit wine, ale or cider.
Stroll along Main Street and discover the
many charming shops in the heritage village. Cap off the evening like a
local with an ice cream or handmade treat
from The Old Firehall Confectionery.
Day 5: Durham
Load up the bikes and head to Darlington
Provincial Park, where you can connect
to the 1,600-kilometre-long Great Lakes
Waterfront Trail. Set up camp and explore
the trails or borrow a fishing rod from the
camp store and try landing the big catch.
Go for a swim at the beach, then pedal
west along the Waterfront Trail through
McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve, the
largest urban wetland in the Greater
Toronto Area. Oshawa’s beautiful Lakeview
Park is just around the corner. Take a look
inside the Community Museum, or stay
outside and gorge on lakeside summer
treats from the food trucks.
Cycle north along the 7-kilometre Joseph
Kolodzie Oshawa Creek Bike Path. As you
meander along the picturesque Oshawa
Creek Valley, you will connect to vibrant
downtown Oshawa, home of The Canadian Automotive Museum, Parkwood Estate,
Botanical Gardens and the Robert McLaughlin Gallery.
Day 6: Durham
Start your morning with a campfire breakfast beneath the trees. Then head west
to Ajax, Ontario’s first designated Bicycle
Friendly Community. Drive toward Lake
Ontario and check in with your hosts at
Before The Mast B & B. Bike west along the
waterfront and you’ll encounter the winding bridge stretching over Duffins Creek
and lakefront bluffs. Refresh with a swim
at Beachfront Park or enjoy the shops of
the Nautical Village. Take a break at PORT
Restaurant, a local favourite that features
the best of Ontario on its menu.
After a day in the saddle, it’s time to pony
up at Ajax Downs racetrack. Or channel
your inner cattle rancher at Picov’s Tack
Shop, where you’ll find cowboy boots of
every size, shape and colour.

You may even catch the mill in action grinding wheat
into flour.
Return to the present for a nosh at the Stouffville

one of the unique rebuilds of the town. The

and other wood building supplies, and
has recently been converted into quaint
shops and galleries.
Have a bite on the outdoor patio of The Mill
Bar & Grill, overlooking the mill’s still active

Day 5: Durham
Make your way to the highest point of the
Oak Ridges Moraine and explore Uxbridge, the
Trail Capital Of Canada. Hike through forests and
conservation lands or go mountain biking on the
Trans Canada Trail, the Oak Ridges Trail or the
Greenbelt Route.
Take a self-guided historic walking tour of
Uxbridge. Experience its charm as you peek inside
the unique shops and boutiques on Brock Street.
Look for the town clock that marks the corner of
the Tin Cup Café. Sip a fresh
brew as you stroll over
to the century-old
Uxbridge Train Station,
now a railway museum. On Sundays, you
can hop aboard the
York-Durham Heritage Railway and ride
the rails in a vintage
coach or licensed
dining car. Make your
way to the bright red
Tin Mill Restaurant and
have a seat on its patio
overlooking the Uxbridge
Brook. Sample its craft beer
selection from The Second Wedge
Brewing Co., then walk to the
brewery for a first-hand tutorial from
the brew master.
Check in early at the Nestleton Waters Inn
and go for a paddle on the pond. Located within
Ontario’s Greenbelt, this 93-acre estate is home to
deer, herons, wild turkey and other wildlife.

prepared from the Inn’s own grapes, and a hot
entrée made with local ingredients. Breakfast
finale: try the German Chocolate Mousse—a family
recipe!
The scenic drive along A Country Path will lead
you to Tyrone Mills Limited—1846. As you step
out of your car, you will be greeted by the smell of
freshly planed lumber and warm cider doughnuts
(made while you wait). The mill still uses traditional

road and explore the many unique destinations
dotted along our charming countryside.
We’ve hand-picked seven must-see detours
to add to your York, Durham and Headwaters
itinerary, and they are just the tip of the iceberg.
Our advice: ask locals for tips on the area’s best

Road trips can be a lot of fun – when you’ve got everything you
need to keep your passengers happy. Here are a couple of
suggestions for making the most of your time in the car:
1.
Make a soundtrack. Create a playlist with music everyone will enjoy and get ready to sing along! Later, rest your vocal cords and listen to comedy on satellite radio or a funny podcast.
2.
Bring a Road Trip Survival Kit. Pack baby wipes, hand sanitizer, ear plugs, phone chargers, breath mints or gum, hand lotion and tissue.
3.
Whatever you do, don’t
question the GPS lady.
She’s the one getting you from famous food truck to iconic
ice cream stand, after all!
4.
Stretch whenever you stop. Check out our recommended detours for some awesome excuses to get out of the car.
5. Backseat drivers need not apply. If you want to keep the peace, keep your driving advice to yourself.
6. Never use poison ivy as TP. If you do....add ointment to your survival kit.
7. Ask a local where to eat and what to see. Trust us, you won’t regret it!
8. Never ask “what’s that smell?” You don’t really want to know...
9.
Don’t trust your dog to be your navigator. Rover just can’t grasp the map with those
cute li’l paws.
10.Always bring an empty cooler. They’re perfect for storing
delicious edible souvenirs from local markets and bakeries.

ADVENTURE
SEEKERS
Get wet and wild, pet a lizard and
scream on the Leviathan. Then
eat an entire funnel cake.
2016 ULTIMATE SUMMER ROAD TRIP
Day 1: Headwaters
Set in Caledon’s hills on the banks of the Humber
River, Albion Hills Conservation Area is the ideal
outdoor getaway.
It offers fishing, swimming, canoeing, hiking and
mountain biking. Pitch a tent or rent a trailer and
enjoy the dramatic scenery.
Be sure to stop in at the Orangeville Farmers
Market on Saturday for fresh produce, baked
goods, local veggies and handcrafted gifts. The
outdoor market runs from 8 am to 1 pm and
attracts people from near and far.
Browse the shops, galleries and cafes in downtown Orangeville. Forage offers casual gourmet
lunch and dinner made with local and organic
ingredients, and has delicious options for
gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan diets.
Day 2: Headwaters
Your drive north will be filled with spectacular
landscapes—fields, meadows and rolling hills
as far as the eye can see. A visit to Mono Cliffs
Provincial Park is a must, with its crevice caves,
limestone plains and rocky slopes. Hike or bike through the Spillway Trail or admire the view
from the Cliff-Top Side Trail. Continue north to
Dufferin County Museum and Archives in Mulmur.
This highlight of the Headwaters features
impressive grounds, a gift boutique with works
from local artists, and exceptionally curated

exhibits that reveal the region’s Wild West history.
Local lore places Mulmur on the map as a hideout
for notorious outlaws Frank and Jesse James.
Make The Olde Stanton Store your next stop. This
eclectic shop redefines the image of country home
decor and gifts, and is packed with everything from
furniture and home spa products to retro candy
and its famous homemade fudge.
At the end of the day, enjoy hearty home cooking
with an air of antique elegance at Globe Restaurant
in Rosemont. This rural gem was built in 1859 as
the Globe Hotel, a local pub and stopping point for
stagecoaches. And it continues to attract travellers
today.
Day 3: york
Thrill-seekers will be in paradise at Canada’s Wonderland
just north of Toronto. The country’s premier amusement park offers excitement for the entire family with
roller coasters, waterslides, live entertainment and
funnel cakes. Dare to ride on Leviathan, one of the
world’s tallest roller coasters. Admission also includes
access to Splash Works, a 20-acre water park that
features Canada’s largest outdoor wave pool. After
a fun-filled day, wind down at the Hilton Garden
Inn Vaughan. This family-friendly hotel provides
children’s dining menus, as well as a pool,
three-story waterslide and other activities.
Day 4: york
Get an early start on your day with breakfast at the
Symposium Café. Leather seats and decor inspired
by the Renaissance make for a warm and cozy
atmosphere to enjoy your morning coffee and a
decadent breakfast.
Revisit Canada’s Wonderland to check off those
rides you missed on day one or start a new
adventure at Vaughan Mills, Canada’s top outlet
destination. The massive shopping centre has 250
stores including the country’s first Bass Pro Shops
and only LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. Vaughan
Mills also has many excellent dining and
entertainment options.
Spend the afternoon exploring Reptilia,
Canada’s largest indoor zoo. This state of the art
25,000-square foot facility showcases more than
250 reptiles and amphibians. Interact with animals
and learn more about their behaviour during tours
and feedings, and watch the zookeepers at work
in the nursery and Venomous Workshop.
For an authentic homemade Italian meal, go to
Vinnie Zucchini’s Italian Eatery. This restaurant
features an extensive buffet and a vibrant atmosphere, and is a favourite of locals and visitors to
York Region.
Day 5: Durham
Switch gears for a high-performance outdoor adventure at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Canada’s Home of Motorsports. Since 1961,
this iconic venue has hosted
every style of road racing on
its famed track, including
Formula 1, IndyCar, stock
cars, motorcycles, motocross, historic vintage
racers and big rig trucks.
On major event weekends, you can set up a
tent at the park and watch
the race from the comfort of
your campsite. Visit the park this
summer for the most exciting racing lineup in the
Hiking Shot
country, highlighted by the only Canadian appearance of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Deeply rooted in agricultural heritage, Pingle’s
Farm Market is the perfect spot to pack the cooler
for your camping weekend at the track. Its wide
selection of fresh and local vegetables, homemade
baked goods, field-fresh berries and meat pies will
tantalize your taste buds. Be sure to save room for
the market’s coveted butter tarts and sweet fudge.
Day 6: Durham
Since 1955, families have been making a splash
at Cedar Park Waterpark Resort. Ride the
water-slides, or get wet and wild at the aqua playground, splash pad and pool. Set on 30 acres of
treed parkland, the resort also has on-site camping
and picnic areas, and plenty of other treats for the
family including a snack bar and mini-golf course.
Nothing works up an appetite like a day outdoors
and nothing satisfies hunger like sticky, smoky
Canadian BBQ at Stuttering John’s Smokehouse.
This restaurant has won awards for Best Ribs and
Best Foodie Restaurant in Durham Region. And
you’ll
agree when you try its premium cuts of
meat cooked slowly over charcoal
and hardwood and topped with
mouthwatering house-made
sauces.
