Jim McKelvey
St. Louis born entrepreneur graduated from Washington University with dual degrees in Economics
and Computer Science and has started numerous successful businesses.
In 1984, as a freshman Economics major at WUSTL, McKelvey wrote and published a replacement for the
computer programming textbook used in one of his classes. He published a second book at the age of 19
which became a bestseller.
After graduation, he worked as a Visiting Scientist at IBM’s Los Angeles Scientific Center. During that time,
McKelvey also worked as a glassblowing instructor and started a CD cabinet manufacturing company.
He then co-founded Mira Corporation which developed one of the first PC document imaging systems.
The arrival of the internet forced McKelvey to rethink that business. So, in 1995, with the assistance of his
summer intern, Jack Dorsey, he took Mira into conference publishing where it remains today. Jim is its
owner and Chairman, but left daily management in 2000.
In 2000 Jim focused his creative energy on glassblowing and co-founded Third Degree Glass Factory, a
glass blowing studio and event venue in University City. In 2006, McKelvey wrote and published an
instructional textbook for glassblowing. That same year, Third Degree hosted the world’s largest
conference for art glass, GAS 2006 and in preparation for this conference McKelvey designed and produced
a line of all-glass faucets. Though not originally intended for sale, the demand for the faucets eventually
led McKelvey to form another company to sell them.
In 2008 McKelvey and Dorsey (who had since invented Twitter) partnered again to start Square, the
company that produced a device that plugs into smartphones or iPads and processes credit card payments.
Square has accumulated more than 2 million customers since its inception in 2010. McKelvey designed
the hardware used in Square which was inducted into the Museum of Modern Art. McKelvey sits on the
board of Square and served as its Chairman until 2010.
Currently, McKelvey is working on ideas to support startups and entrepreneurs. Recently, McKelvey launched
an accelerator program called SixThirty. Through this program, new startups compete for $100,000 in cash
and mentoring from some of the country’s largest financial services firms that are based in St. Louis.
He is also is leading an effort to foster the growth of coders in St. Louis. This venture, called LaunchCode,
pairs coders with engineers at 100 St. Louis-area companies. McKelvey hopes to grow the number of
coders in St. Louis to spur economic development and make the region known throughout the country as a
place for companies to tap into coding talent.
Jim’s personal successes have benefited our region immensely.
We look forward to seeing our region continue to grow and prosper through Jim’s vision.

President’s Letter
reetings Chamber Members! I hope that you are all enjoying the fall weather and are well into a successful year in your
businesses.
The fall months bring forth some of my favorite Chamber events.
Patrick Buehring
The Chamber is proud to organize a diverse collection of events
throughout the year. We could not continue the quality and number of activities without support
from so many generous companies and talented individuals. Thank you!
This summer, our Parties in the Park 30th Anniversary was a tremendous success! There were
record crowds on Central Avenue. Special thanks to Plaza Motors for presenting the event.
The Power Hour Networking Luncheons featured outstanding speakers and great attendance. We are truly grateful for the University College at Washington University’s ongoing commitment to
the Chamber and to our community. We also want to thank University College for sponsoring our
Social Media Series. Those programs provided a tremendous service for business people that are
trying to understand how Social Media can benefit their businesses.
Our overseas trips continue to provide unique ways to meet new contacts. This year we offered
two incredible journeys- Prague / Berlin and Cuba! Let us know what country you would like to
explore next year.
Join us in the coming months for the Best of Clayton and Pillars in the Community honoring
Jim McKelvey - entrepreneur and co-founder of Square!
It’s hard to believe that one organization can facilitate so many high quality events year after
year. Thank you to the Board and Chamber members who work diligently in volunteer roles
throughout the year. Most of all, thank you Ellen, Mary-Ellen, Mary and Trish for all your hard
work.
We are always listening for different ways that we can add more value to this organization.
I welcome you to contact me or Ellen Gale personally if you have suggestions.
Patrick Buehring
2013 President
Thank you for your participation!
Mayor’s Message
W
e had
a busy and
exciting summer
in Clayton,
starting with the
Taste of Clayton
Harold Sanger which launched
an outstanding calendar of special events. The Clayton
Farmers Market brought throngs of foodies
to our city each Saturday, and thousands
enjoyed live music by the pond at Musical
Nights in Oak Knoll Park. Thanks to the hard
work of your Chamber staff, the monthly
Parties in the Park on Central Avenue were
over-the-top successes.
Adding to the summer buzz were awards
and recognitions. Clayton accepted an
award from the U.S. Department of Defense
for the support we provide to Reserve
and National Guard employees and their
families. The city received the “Accessible
St. Louis Shine the Light Award” for our
efforts to ensure full access to people of all
abilities. The Certificate of Excellence from
the International City/County Management
Association (ICMA) recognized the city’s
superior performance management efforts.
And, our own Saint Louis Art Fair won an
amazing five gold, six silver and two bronze
awards at the International Festivals &
Events Association’s annual convention.
The summer concluded with a number
of events. A sculpture by world renowned
2
artist James Surls was installed in Shaw
Park’s Century Garden. Molecular Bloom
with Single Flower now graces the park’s
entrance between the pool and ice rink.
The twentieth annual Saint Louis Art Fair
brought approximately 130,000 to downtown Clayton. Clayton’s Fire Department
held its second 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
event honoring the 343 firefighters who
perished during the attack on the World
Trade Center. Over $30,000 was raised
to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation survivor programs. And at
long last, the new Anderson Dog Park was
dedicated and opened to members on
September 19.
On a regional note, we welcome the new
St. Louis City and County joint Economic
Development Agency to Clayton and are
proud that the agency has selected Clayton
as its new home. It’s encouraging to know
that economic development will now be a
regional effort.
We look forward to more excitement during
the fall and winter. Earlier this month, the
community enjoyed family activities at
the Centennial Festival in Shaw Park. On
November 29th, we will wrap up our 2013
Centennial Celebration with the Party of the
Century at the Ritz-Carlton. For more details,
