2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Monumental Sports &
Entertainment Foundation
Created in 2013 Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation
supports the charitable efforts of the Washington Capitals, Mystics
and Wizards, aligning their causes and unifying their giving, which
enables us to have the greatest impact on our community.
MSE Foundation is committed to the Washington, D.C.,
metropolitan area and focuses on the following five pillars to
maximize its impact and engagement with the community:
•
•
•
•
•
Youth basketball and hockey
Education and scholarship
Pediatric health and fitness
Military and veterans’ affairs
Hunger and homelessness
Recognizing the community as our most important asset, MSE Foundation looks
forward to continuing to create and sustain programs that are designed to
give back to the very community that supports our teams. In 2014 Monumental
Sports & Entertainment Foundation, along with the Leonsis Foundation, donated
more than $1.6 million to local charities. Through MSE Foundation we pledge to
continue investing our time and resources and serving as a positive influence and
contributor in our community, and we hope to inspire others to do the same.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation received The Salvation
Army’s Community Partner Award in May at United in Service. United
in Service is a ceremony in recognition of volunteers and community
partners for their compassionate work on behalf of The Salvation Army,
which assists people in need throughout the Washington, D.C., region.

Dreams for Kids
For the fourth-consecutive year the
Washington Capitals teamed up with
Dreams for Kids to host an Extreme
Recess hockey clinic at Kettler Capitals

Foundation and gave many of the
children the opportunity to skate and
play hockey for the first time.
The Capitals’ Connor Carrick, John
Erskine, Jack Hillen and Joel Ward,
along with mascot Slapshot, skated
and played hockey with 100 children
with physical and developmental
disabilities. The players spent the
clinic instructing children on how to
skate and pushing the sleds of children
trying out sled hockey. They also
signed autographs and took photos
with attendees.

money and awareness for hockey’s
most important fight. To date, through
the NHL’s U.S. and Canadian charitable
foundations, more than $12.8 million
has been raised through the Hockey
Fights Cancer initiative to support
national and local cancer research
institutions, children’s hospitals,
player charities and local cancer
organizations. The Hockey Fights
Cancer program is also a component
of the NHL’s “Biggest Assist Happens
Off the Ice” campaign - the league’s
long-standing tradition of addressing

important social issues in North
America and around the world.
Children’s National Health Sysytem
MSE Foundation donated $7,500 to

fundraising arm for Children’s National
Health Center in Washington, D.C. The
foundation partners with individual
donors, corporations and community
organizations to help the doctors,
nurses and clinicians at Children’s
National fulfill their vision to transform
children’s health in the Washington
area, across the country and around
the world. The Children’s Hospital
Foundation raises money to support
Children’s National Health System.

Courage Presented by Telos
Corporation
MSE Foundation donated nearly
$137,000 to Tragedy Assistance
Program for Survivors (TAPS) through
its Courage program presented by
Telos Corporation.
Connor Carrick and Jack Hillen hosted
more than 120 children and adults
assisted by TAPS for a skating party
at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Attendees
participated in an hour-long skating
session with the Capitals players,
mascot Slapshot and Red Rockers.
Courage Caps and T-shirts were
sold at Capitals home games, at
WashingtonCaps.com and at the team
stores at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and
Verizon Center. Wizards Courage hats
were sold at Wizards home games and
at the Team Store at Verizon Center.
Both teams had a limited number of
autographed hats available for sale
with the Caps also selling autographed
T-shirts.
The Wizards tipped off their Courage
program by treating TAPS families to a
luncheon at the Player’s Club in Verizon
Center with a visit from mascot G-Wiz
and Wizard Girls. After practice the
families got to meet Wizards players
on the practice court and shoot some
hoops.
During the Capitals program launch,
American-born players John Carlson,
While 2014 marked the second season
for the Wizards Courage program, it
was the seventh season the Capitals
hosted the campaign. During the past
three seasons the Courage initiative
has raised nearly $350,000 for
TAPS. Since its inception the
Courage program has raised
nearly $500,000 for worthwhile
charities, including Our Military
Kids, USO-Metro and The Fisher
House Foundation. Through
the program more than 15,000
Courage hats have been sold in
seven years and nearly 7,000
Courage T-shirts have been sold
in five years.
TAPS is a nonprofit organization
that provides ongoing emotional
help, hope and healing to all who
are grieving the death of a loved
one in military service to America.
TAPS offers comfort and care
through comprehensive services
and programs, including peerbased emotional support, case
work assistance, regional seminars and
retreats for adults, Good Grief Camps
for children, and grief and trauma
resources. Founded out of tragedy
in 1994, TAPS has assisted more than
30,000 grieving military families and
their caregivers.

Hunger and Homelessness
Family-to-Family
For the fourth-straight year all three
Monumental Sports & Entertainment
sports teams collaborated on the
Family-to-Family program, which the
Wizards created 18 years ago. The
program allows the Capitals, Mystics
and Wizards to “adopt” families in need
who are nominated by local schools
and nonprofit organizations. During the
2014 holiday season 20 families were
adopted by MSE Foundation and an
additional 20 families were adopted by
individual players, coaches and staff
members.
The Family-to-Family program kicked
off when wives and girlfriends
shopped for nearly 100 adults and
children adopted through the program.
Participants included Capitals better
halves Mandy Alzner, Carmen Brouwer,
Sarah Chimera, Amelia Falk (Marcus
Johansson), Ivy Geddis (assistant
coach Blaine Forsythe), Courtney
Parrie Green, Andi Lambert, Erin Orpik,
Kim Trotz and Claire Volpatti; Mystics
guards Tayler Hill and Tierra RuffinPratt; and Wizards better half Courtney
Webster. Clothing, educational
items and toys were purchased
for the children, while clothing and
household items along with gift cards
were purchased for the parents and
guardians. Walmart, who served as a
partner on the program, hosted the
shopping outing.
Five lucky families were selected
to have their presents personally
delivered to them by the Wizards
and Mystics. Wizards players Bradley
Beal, Rasual Butler, Paul Pierce, Otto
Porter, Garrett Temple and John Wall,
along with coach Randy Wittman,
Mystics player Tierra Ruffin-Pratt,
Wizards mascot G-Wiz and Wizard
Girls delivered gifts to these local
underserved families.
22
The group, along with MSE staff
members, boarded a bus at Verizon
Center loaded with gifts for the
families. The players spent the
afternoon delivering presents to the
families in southeast and northwest
Washington.
To conclude the Family-to-Family
program, all of the adopted families
were invited to a holiday party hosted
by the Capitals at Kettler Capitals
Iceplex. The children and families in
attendance enjoyed an afternoon of ice
skating, street hockey, refreshments
and fun with Capitals coach Barry
Trotz and his wife, Kim, forward
Troy Brouwer and his wife, Carmen,
defenseman John Carlson, team
mascot Slapshot, Red Rockers and a
special appearance by Santa. At the
end of the event, the families left with
bags overflowing with holiday gifts
from MSE Foundation and the Capitals,
Mystics and Wizards.
The families selected for participation
in the Family-to-Family program
were nominated by local schools and
nonprofit organizations, including
Bright Beginnings, Catholic Charities,
Drew Elementary School, Imagine
Hope, Playworks and The Salvation
Army National Capital Area Command.
Food 4 Families
The Capitals, Mystics and Wizards
partnered with NBC4 to host the Food 4
Families food drive at Verizon Center.
Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen;
Mystics guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt,
coach Mike Thibault, assistant coach
Eric Thibault; and Wizards center
Marcin Gortat, general manager
Ernie Grunfeld, coach Randy Wittman
and his wife, Kathy, assistant coach
Don Newman and his wife, Michelle,
assistant coach Howard Eisley and
Martell Webster’s wife, Courtney, all
stopped by the drive, joining NBC4’s
Pat Lawson Muse to help collect
food and monetary donations. MSE
Foundation donated $10,000 to the
cause, which provides food to families
in need throughout the region during
Thanksgiving.
The drive helped Food 4 Families raise
more than $50,000 in cash donations
and feed 4,000 families.
The Salvation Army National Capital
Area Command
In conjunction with the Capitals and
Wizards toy drives, MSE Foundation
donated $10,000 to The Salvation
Army National Capital Area Command.
Founder, chairman, majority owner
and CEO of Monumental Sports &
Entertainment Ted Leonsis presented
the check to Major Reckline, area
commander, and Dale Bannon,
executive director for community and
professional services for The Salvation
Army of the National Capital Area.
The Salvation Army served as the
beneficiary of both the Capitals and
Wizards toy drives, where more than
1,500 toys were donated. The teams
23
also hosted bell ringers as part of The
Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.
The Salvation Army National Capital
Area Command assisted more than
85,000 individuals last year from
families living across the Greater
Washington region by providing help
and hope through a diverse range of

assistance; grocery, clothing and
furniture vouchers; meals for the
hungry and homeless; support for
the disabled, elderly and ill; drug and
alcohol rehabilitation; disaster relief;
transitional housing for single mothers
with children; and character building
opportunities for youth.
D.C. Central Kitchen
For the second-straight year MSE
Foundation provided D.C. Central
Kitchen with a $10,000 donation.
Located just a few blocks from
Verizon Center, D.C. Central Kitchen
is America’s leader in reducing
hunger with recycled food, training
unemployed adults for culinary
careers, serving healthy school meals
and rebuilding urban food systems
through social enterprise.
For the third year in a row, MSE
Foundation hosted a service project
at D.C. Central Kitchen for MSE staff
members. This project allowed nearly
40 staffers to work alongside D.C.
Central Kitchen culinary job training
graduates in the organization’s Meal
Prep program. The Meal Prep program
utilizes volunteers to make 5,000
meals daily that are delivered to 100
nearby homeless shelters, transitional
homes and nonprofit organizations.
Cup of Joe
Monumental Sports & Entertainment
staff members teamed up with
Catholic Charities’ Cup of Joe program
for a service project at Verizon
Center. Hosted by MSE Foundation,
staff members assembled 1,300
healthy “breakfast to-go” bags to be
distributed to men and women who
are staying overnight in emergency
shelters.
For more than 80 years families,
children and adults in need of help and
hope have been able to turn to Catholic
Charities to find comprehensive,
caring and competent support. In
2014 Catholic Charities had more than
65 programs working in 47 locations
24
throughout the District of Columbia
and the surrounding Maryland counties
serving more than 116,000 men,
women and children of all economic,
religious and social backgrounds.
Arlington Food Assistance Center
MSE Foundation donated $5,000 to
Arlington Food Assistance Center
(AFAC), a community-based nonprofit
that provides supplemental groceries
to its Arlington neighbors in need.
Founded more than 25 years ago,
AFAC remains dedicated to its simple
but critical mission of obtaining
and distributing groceries, directly
and free of charge, to people living
in Arlington who cannot afford to
purchase enough food to meet their
basic needs.
Caps Better Halves
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue
MSE Foundation donated more than
$34,000 to Homeward Trails Animal
Rescue with funds raised through
the sale of the 2014 Capitals Canine
Calendar, an initiative started by the
Caps Better Halves. The money will
help provide medical and behavioral
care as well as permanent homes for
hundreds of dogs and cats rescued by
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.
The calendar featured photos of
Capitals players Karl Alzner, Jay
Beagle, Troy Brouwer, John Carlson,
John Erskine, Mike Green, Jack Hillen,
Aaron Volpatti and Joel Ward with
their dogs and Nicklas Backstrom,
Mikhail Grabovski, Braden Holtby,
Marcus Johansson, Steve Oleksy, Alex
Ovechkin and Tom Wilson with dogs
from Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is a
nonprofit organization that provides
pet adoption in Virginia, Washington,
D.C., and Maryland. Homeward Trails
seeks to find permanent adoptive
homes in the Mid-Atlantic region for
dogs and cats from high-kill shelters
or whose owners can no longer care
for them. They seek to reduce the rate
of euthanasia of adoptable animals
through the rescue and placement of
homeless animals; to support proactive
spay/neuter practices; to promote
positive and ongoing behavioral
training; and to educate the public
about how to care for their animals in a
humane way.
