ummer time may already be gone, but here
comes the autumn -“a second spring when
every leaf is a flower” as Albert Camus once said.
Europe from east to west and north to
south is coated in a colourful blanket
of hues of red, amber and yellow.
October is the perfect time for hiking, so
for all of you who would like to conquer
hills, be sure to discover many picturesque
landscapes painted by the invisible hand
of one of the most glorious artists – the
autumn. Throughout the old continent you
will find hiking trails for every pace and age,
with Hungary, Portugal and Belgium being
some of the options to be enjoyed on foot.
Should you be a leaf peeping fan, you can’t
miss visiting the Northern regions of Europe,
where this seasonal change is particularly
striking. Some good foliage destinations
are Norway, Finland and Denmark.
If you want to enjoy one of the nature’s most
spectacular colour shows where leaves
glowing in beautiful shades are the main
characters, put on your walking shoes and
explore the stunning European destinations!

EUROPE IS TASTY IN AUTUMN!
A
utumn is definitely a good time to experience the European traditional cuisine either
through tasting its wine, visiting the local gastronomy fairs and festivals or preparing a
typical autumn dish on your own.
Apple Strudel
Apfelstrudel, Lo strudel, Štrudl, Štrudla and
Štrukli – these are the names by which this
sweet of light pastry and juicy filling is called in
Austria and Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia
and the Czech Republic. However, you may not
know that this fine pastry once travelled a long
route from Arabia via the Ottoman Empire and
Turkey, before coming to Vienna. And for sure,
the long journey was worth it! Check the recipe

Wine Routes
•The Slovenian Istria Wine Region
The Slovenian region of Istria is one of the
leading wineproducers in the country. The
fertile soil and climate of Istria are perfect
for wine producing and because of it, many
varieties of grapes – both red and white –
grow in the region with Refošk (Refosco del
Peduncolo Verde, being the most important
one.
•Saxon Wine Route
Saxon Wine Route wends its way for 55 km
through the sunny and mild valley of the
Elbe. This part of Saxony enjoys a particularly
favourable climate and grapes have been
grown there for over 850 years.
•Wine and Food Road of Valcalepio
Lombardy was one of the first regions in
Italy where the idea of Wine Roads was first
developed. The Wine and Food Roads of
Lombardy network are a series of ‘gourmet
itineraries’, where local wine and food are
promoted. There are currently twelve roads
and one of them is the Wine and Food Road of
Valcalepio, in the western area of the Province
of Bergamo.

LUXEMBOURG,
A HIKER’S PARADISE
Discover Luxembourg’s breathtaking landscapes in autumn
A
relaxing stroll through nature;
the best way to see Luxembourg’s
nature are the numerous hiking trails
for every pace, age and difficulty level.
5000 km of trails to gain an overview on
the different regions and landscapes.
Deep valleys and vast tableland are
characteristic of the northern part
known as “Éislek”. Slate rocks and forest
slopes complement this grand spectacle
of nature, embellished by an idyllic
landscape with castles and fortifications.
The Müllerthal in the east impresses with
its stone formations set in dense woodland.
The Müllerthal trail is 112 km long, leading
through this enchanted area, its idyllic
streams and breathtaking panoramic
views. The Müllerthal is often referred
to as “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland”.
Hiking trails along the river Mosel are
the perfect destination for those who like
to conquer hills. Between Schengen and
Wasserbillig hikers can tackle the steep
vineyards, discover picturesque wine villages
and admire the scenic beauty of the riverscape.
The hiking trails of the “Red Rock region”
reflect the past of the region’s metallurgical
industry. The “miner’s trail” leads you
through former industrial sites, which
have been declared as natural reserves.
For an obvious reason Luxembourg-city is
often referred to as the “green lung of Europe”
as parks occupy more than two thirds of the
capital’s surface. The best way to explore the
more than a thousand year old history of the
city’s fortress is the thematic “Wenzel-trail”.

AUSTRIA’S STUNNING ALPS
Enjoy leisurely walks through spectacular fall landscapes
T
here are numerous ways to explore
and experience a destination but none as
intimate and personal as taking the time
to enjoy your vacation destination on foot.
Walking and hiking in Austria will get you
close to nature and allow you to get to
know the people and the wonderful local
traditions. Here is a selection of some
of the most scenic regions in Austria:
Innsbruck and its Holiday Villages
Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, is particularly charming with its medieval flair. Let a
cable car whisk you up the Patscherkofel
Mountain and walk the Pine Tree Trail, a
4 mile long panorama promenade in the
midst of a nature preserve.
Alpbach Valley
Hundreds of balconies festooned with
colorful flowers dot the villages of Alpbach
and neighboring Reith, just a 45 minutes’
drive from Innsbruck. With its timbered
housing and historic inns, the villages are
known as some of the most beautiful in all
of Europe.
Hallstatt
A pristine lakeside village in the heart of
the Salzkammergut region and a recognized World Heritage site with 4500 years
of history. The Dachstein mountain towers
over Hallstatt from 3004 meters. Explore
ancient salt mines, and enjoy miles of hiking and plenty of lakeside relaxation.
Salzburger Land
Millions of people around the world recognize the Lake District near Salzburg from
the movie classic “The Sound of Music”.
The nearby Saalach Valley has become a
favorite walking destination with its multi-day “Hiking without luggage” programs.

GERMANY’S GOLDEN AUTUMN
Be amazed by the sheer range of colors!
M
any German regions become very
colorful in fall, a time referred to as the
“Golden Autumn” - comparable to the
famous
American
“Indian
Summer.”
The Eifel, a volcanic area along the Moselle
and Rhine rivers, close to Belgium and
Luxembourg, is home to magnificent
flora, which shines in all shades of red,
green and yellow this time of year. The
romantic region can be enjoyed on foot,
by bike or even from the back of a horse.
Thuringia’s Hainich National Park, Europe’s
biggest mixed deciduous forest with a
wide range of different species, offers
different themed trails for explorers of the
beautiful landscape. To catch a spectacular
glimpse of the multi-colored trees in the
fall, visitors can walk the treetop trail at
a height of 131ft. Close by are the spa
town Bad Langensalza and the Wartburg
Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Further east is another UNESCO site, the
Garden Kingdom Dessau-Wörlitz, with
its majestic manors, parks and gardens.
Explore the beautiful architecture and natural
surroundings on foot or by bike – and maybe
have the chance to enjoy an outdoor concert.
The area around Lake Constance, bordering
Switzerland and Austria, is well worth a visit,
especially during the first couple of weeks
in October, when the golden sun shines on a
clear blue sky and the leaves glow in beautiful
colors. Strolling along the lake on such an
autumn’s day, with the Alps in the background,
is sure to make you feel very close to nature.

EXPERIENCE AUTUMN
IN NORWAY
Shorter days bring brighter colours
I
n Norway you are never far from nature.
Even in the cities, scenic nature is nearby
and easily accessible, making Norway the
ideal destination for a varied autumn getaway.
Hiking and biking are activities not only
for the height of summer. In the autumn
you can enjoy the remaining warmth of
the summer and the changing colours
of the scenery along the fjords, in the
lush valleys and high mountains alike.
Hike or bike a short route or go for a longer
trip from cabin to cabin in the mountains,
taking all the time you need and making the
trip as demanding or relaxing as you prefer.
As there is not much snow left even on the
highest peaks, other than on the glaciers,
the autumn is the ideal time for the mountain
experience, whether biking or hiking, through
some of the best scenery Norway has to offer.
If hiking or biking is not your cup of tea,
the autumn is the perfect time for treating
yourself. Lots of first-rate ingredients are
readily available for the best restaurants
in the country, resulting in top notch
dishes to share with your loved ones.
No need to go hiking or biking in order
to enjoy Norwegian nature, by the way.
Several hotels and spa centres offer
facilities
and
accommodation
close
to a variety of pristine locations, no
matter which type of scenery you prefer.
No matter where you go and what you do,
however, remember to dress warmly at night
and go looking for the northern lights. If the
conditions are right, you’ll be treated to the
lightshow of a lifetime.

PORTUGAL’S UNIQUE
LANDSCAPES
Portugal has a diverse and wonderful array of landscapes.
F
rom the sweeping Lisbon urban vistas to
the wild cliffs of the Portuguese coast, these
views both enthrall and invite. Portugal offers
autumn views from hikes and walks to the
top of castles, mountains, cliffs and villages.
The Douro Valley follows a meandering river
that offers views in the fall that are simply
breathtaking. From Porto, the river follows
along terraced hillsides. You can go by road,
by train, by cruise boat or even by helicopter.
Monsanto is a village high in the Centro
Mountains with an ancient castle. The
view from the highest point of the fortress
is sweeping, and the walled village with
houses built between boulders is unique.
Lisbon’s São Pedro de Alcântara is a park
perched over downtown reached by the Glória
funicular – and with amazing city views. A
tile panel at the upper viewpoint indicates
precisely which landmarks to look for.
Marvão, Alentejo Like other fortified towns in
the Alentejo, such as Monsaraz and Mértola,
Marvão’s vista rises from the ground to
soar high. Its castle stands on a hill 3,000
ft. above sea level, and from it you can enjoy
an unparalleled view that goes on for miles.
Madeira has some amazing views and hikes,
given its volcanic origins. Girão Cape is the
highest sea cliff in Europe at 1,900 feet. The
nearby Curral das Freiras Valley boasts
dizzying views 1,700 feet meters high from
the Eira do Serrado overlook that will take any
visitor’s breath away. The mountain pass at
Encumeada follows an overlook-dotted route.

GOLDEN DAYS
Outdoor Adventures in Denmark
D
anish nature is spectacular in the autumn
months. The trees and landscape are dotted
in dramatic autumnal colours, but it’s still
mild enough to enjoy activities outdoors.
Hiking in heathland or dunes, fresh walks
along white cliffs or on the beach; Denmark
is at its bracing best in the autumn. Here
are some ideas for cheap and easy ways to
enjoy Denmark’s nature in autumn.
A Danish Autumn Tradition
Each November, crowds gather in Denmark’s
royal Deer Park, just north of Copenhagen,
to witness the spectacular Hubertus Hunt;
a colourful tradition in Denmark where the
fox has long since been replaced by a rider.
Today the hunt is all about enjoying a day
out in the beautiful parkland with the family
and it’s a great way to get up close to Danish
culture.
Nature walking in Råbjerg Mile
Råbjerg Mile is the biggest migrating dune
in Northern Europe. Each autumn, you can
explore the area on a guided nature walk,
where you can experience the dramatic west
coast and end the day watching a stunning
autumn sunset.
Ramblers’ Day
Head out and see Denmark’s diverse landscapes this autumn as part of Rambler’s
Day. Ramblers’ Day is a country-wide event
organized by the Danish Ramblers’ Association and it’s free and family friendly! Meet
other families and enjoy Denmark’s outdoors at this unique event.

Unique landscapes full of charm, mystery and grace
O
ctober is perhaps one of the best months
to visit Bulgaria, especially if you are fond of
autumnal hilly and mountainous landscapes.
Moreover, even though the summer days
are over, the weather in autumn is still
pleasant and very often sunny in Bulgaria.
the country: Pirin National Park, Rila National
Park and the Central Balkans National Park.
There are also 11 nature reserves – Belasitsa,
Balgarka, Vratsa Balkan, Golden Sands,
Persina, Rila Monastery, Rusenski Lom, Sinite
Kamani, Strandzha and the Shumen Plateau.
The natural landscape of Bulgaria is diverse,
consisting of lowlands, plains, foothills and
plateaus, river valleys, basins, and mountains
of varying elevations. The whole country
changes its colours during this time of the year,
so tourists and locals have plenty of options for
an exciting colourful trip or a day in the nature.
If you prefer visiting lakes, there are many of
them in Bulgaria (coastal, glacial, karst, byriver and tectonic), concentrated along the
Black Sea coast and the Danube, and in the
regions of the Rila and Pirin ranges.
For those who like hiking, the central part of
the country where the Balkan Mountain Range
lies is highly recommended. Its western area
is especially charming, as from south to
north, it is crossed by the Iskar River, forming
a picturesque gorge more than 70 km long.

AUTUMN COLOURS GALORE
Finnish Nature puts on an unmatched display of earthy hues
A
utumn leaf colour, or “ruska” to locals,
is a spectacular natural phenomenon
that
paints
northern
landscapes
in
deep and soft tones. Covered in forests
and wildernesses, Finland is a prime
destination for some serious leaf peeping.
The stark contrasts between the four seasons
are the main characteristics of the annual
natural cycle in Finland. Autumn leaf colour
acts as a messenger of sorts; it bids a
melancholy farewell to long summer days
and serves as a reminder of the dark and
cold winter that looms around the corner.
The peak season only lasts for roughly
two weeks. The period varies from year
to year, but the latter part of September
is usually a safe bet when planning a trip.
Hiking is the most favoured activity for
witnessing the phenomenon, and routes
vary from accessible to all to challenging
enough for more experienced trekkers.
The temperature is also ideal for hiking,
usually
around
10
degrees
Celsius.
A feeling of harmony and cosiness is often
associated with autumn leaf colour. Finding
a spot with a good view over the landscape
make your everyday worries a distant memory.
Add a hot drink with snacks and you’ll catch
yourself making excuses for not leaving.
The “ruska” season is popular with
photographers, and why wouldn’t it be: the
variety of broadleaf trees and conifers as well
as berries and moss on the ground provide an
array of hues of green, auburn, blue, red and
yellow so vivid not capturing them would be a
crime.

Adventurous strolls through medieval bridges
A

the trees and plants are changing into their
copper colours, the weather is pleasantly
warm and nature is inviting everyone
to enjoy its beauty by strolling through

landscapes.
The best way to experience this magnificent
season is by following the linear nature
trail along the medieval bridges of Cyprus.
Offering panoramic views throughout, the
path takes you past the medieval bridges of
Elia, Tsielefos and Roudia, through dense
pine forest, over Arminou dam and past Pera
Vasa picnic site (where there is a huge dry tree
trunk of the Pera Vasa pine). It then continues
through “Saouris” farm belonging to Kykkos
Monastery and past the Cave of Saouris and
“Mitas” pen, close to an observation point for
vultures. The whole length of the trail is 17 km
long and it will take an extremely fit individual
at least 6 hours to go from beginning to end.
Nevertheless, one can choose to do smaller
parts of the trail as there are several beautiful
points to choose from such as Arminou dam,
the Cave of Saouris or an observation point
for vultures. One of its most spectacular ones
is the Tsielefos Bridge area. The scenery is
idyllic for relaxation, coming in contact with
nature and above all falling in love.

about halfway along, the route snakes
northeast into the Börzsöny, Mátra, Bükk

The E4 trans-European walking route crosses
the country, from the Austro-Hungarian

MONACO’S COLORFUL WALKS
Sculpture Path Weaves through Gardens and Attractions
M
onaco’s colorful landscape reaches
beyond the lights of the world-famous Casino
de Monte-Carlo featuring pops of colors
provided by the many gardens against a vibrant
blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the sky.
The Sculpture Path, an initiative of the
Sovereign Prince, takes visitors on a
cultural journey with nearly 100 unique
creations by contemporary artists placed
strategically throughout the Principality.
Some highlights include “Le Poing” by
César and “Adam and Eve” by Botero.
Make sure to visit the recently redesigned
Princess Grace Rose Garden, located
in the Fontvieille area and celebrating
its 30th anniversary this year. Centered
around Verkade’s statue of Princess Grace,
the garden is scented by thousands of
colorful roses organized into themes,
ranging from flowers named after each
member of the Princely Family including
the bright pink Grace de Monaco rose.
Next, walk to the Japanese Garden with
features representing harmony, purity, peace
and tranquility. Lastly, make sure not to miss the
Exotic Garden, overlooking the Mediterranean
Sea, which houses some 7,000 succulents
from the world’s many desert regions.
No matter where the path leads, Monaco’s
colorful natural beauty, culture and attractions
welcome the visitor.

THE OTHER SWISS MOUNTAINS
Dive Into Intact Nature
I

only? Not really. The Jura Mountains, along
the western border of the country, show a
different landscape. Their well-protected
nature and watch-making industry make the
Jura Mountains the perfect fall destination.
awarded World Heritage status by the
Unesco. The site presents outstanding
examples of mono-industrial manufacturing
towns, which are well preserved and still
active. The two cities were shaped by
the watch industry over a few decades.
One of the highlights is the impressive
panorama on the Creux du Van. This
spectacular and fascinating site is a natural
rock arena, where you can see chamois, ibex,
lynx and others wild animals living in perfect
harmony with this nature reserve. Or walk
up the Chasseron, one of the highest points
in the Swiss Jura, and enjoy a breathtaking
view on the Suisse Plateau to the Alps – a
75-mile panorama from Mount Titlis to Mont
Blanc. In fall it’s even more spectacular!
Continue your way through the Jura further
south. The Vallée de Joux allows you to
combine this watch-making culture with
a wide range of outdoor activities. Hiking,
biking, water sport activities are some of
them. Especially in fall, when the trees turn
colors and the light is magical. Discover a
less known part of Switzerland.
La Chaux-de-Fonds, the birthplace of Le
Corbusier, was the world capital of the
watch-making industry for over a hundred
years. The watch-making centers of La

Award winning wine and gourmet food, your autumn trail
T
he wine making tradition in Slovakia dates
back to the Celtic and Roman periods. Anyone
wishing to acquaint themselves with this noble
product should set off along one of the eight
wine routes. The Lesser Carpathian Wine
Route leads from Bratislava to Trnava and it
is the biggest wine route in Slovakia. Together
with the wine of the Lesser Carpathian wine
making region, you should also try the local
specialties. It is mainly roast goose and duck
with lokshe (potato cakes). The autumn feast
is an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
Skalický trdelník, a cake having a cylindrical
shape baked on rods bearing the EU mark
with protected geographical Skalický trdelník
identification is a local bakery specialty. The
Kamenín Wine Route crosses the SouthSlovakian viticulture region. The Wine Route
follows the European Danube cycle route
and the cycle routes alongside the Hron
River. Here they serve the local smoked
specialties and “pagác” (a savory scone)
with wine. You can enjoy varieties in the wine
cellars of the Royal Wine Route in the Nitra
Viticulture Region. It is worth visiting the
village of Radošiná. Its wines are suppliers
even to the British royal court. Wine lovers
and connoisseurs will surely also want to
visit the Tokay Wine Route. This unique local
dessert wine was created thanks to the
combination of volcano rock and a special
production process with slow oxidation.
