2/ANNUAL REPORT 2015
.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015/3
Every year in this annual report we say that this is the most exciting era in the history of Bristol
Hospital. This year is no different as we share a snapshot of all of our accomplishments.
One of the many highlights from this year was the American Nurses Credentialing Center® Magnet
Recognition Program®, granting Bristol Hospital Magnet recognition. Achieving Magnet status is proof
of our relentless pursuit of excellence in nursing and all areas of the hospital. More importantly, it
validates our culture of safety, quality and service.
Immediately following our Magnet announcement, Bristol Hospital was awarded Hip and Knee
Joint Replacement Certification from The Joint Commission. We then opened our new, 8,000-squarefoot Center for Orthopedic and Spine Health. Our Magnet Recognition and the Joint Commission
certification are two additions to a growing list of prestigious awards and recognitions.
Our commitment to the health care needs of the Greater Bristol Community resulted in the addition
of 29 new providers—19 of whom are members of the Bristol Hospital Multi-Specialty Group. These
include primary care physicians as well as specialists in behavioral health, cardiology, hematology and
oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, and rheumatology. We also continue to build upon relationships
with other partners in the state including Yale-New Haven Hospital, and Saint Francis Hospital and
Medical Center.
Additionally, Bristol Hospital continues to keep pace with the most advanced technology. Earlier this
year, we started our robotic surgery program by adding the da Vinci Xi Surgical System which results in
less pain and faster recovery times for our patients. The da Vinci Xi is the latest equipment of its kind
and Bristol Hospital is proud to be the only hospital in Hartford County to have this version of
the surgical robot.
Recently our Beekley Center for Breast Health and Wellness added a new digital tomosynthesis unit
which creates a three dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays. The tomosynthesis unit comes
as welcome news to our patients since the 3D mammogram provides better quality and improved
accuracy, and therefore more peace of mind.
None of this growth and success is possible without the hard work and dedication of our employees,
medical staff, donors and volunteers. Our vision to be recognized as the best community hospital in
Connecticut continues. Our future is strong and our heart as a community hospital will not change,
it is unwavering.
Thank you for being “Everyday Extraordinary.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2015/7
Patient Satisfaction
Patient Safety and Quality
Bristol Hospital and Health Care Group’s primary mission is to provide our patients with the safest and
highest quality care. We continue to undertake a number of initiatives designed to enhance the safety
and quality of care we provide.
In 2013, Bristol Hospital began a journey to establish a High Reliability Organization which is a culture and
methodology that radically reduces systems failures and catastrophic events. This includes the hospital’s
Journey to Zero Harm. Since then, our staff’s dedication to this practice of safety continues to result in
a decreased number of serious safety events. In 2015, there was a 97 percent decrease in serious safety
events, and a more than 100 percent improvement in the average days between serious safety events.

Magnet Recognition
The American Nurses Credentialing Center®, (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, granted
Bristol Hospital Magnet recognition thereby giving Bristol Hospital “status” as a Magnet recognized
organization. Magnet is the highest recognition an organization can receive for nursing care
as established by the ANCC, a division of the American Nurses Association. The Magnet status
recognizes health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the
tradition of professional nursing practice.
Currently, Bristol Hospital is the only hospital in Hartford County to hold Magnet recognition and
is only one of four Magnet hospitals in Connecticut. About 7 percent of the nation’s hospitals have
met the criteria to earn this prestigious designation for providing the highest quality patient care,
teamwork, professionalism and innovation in nursing practice.

20/ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Last spring, Bristol Hospital launched its Robotic Surgery program with the purchase of the da
Vinci Xi Surgical System—the newest and most advanced surgical robot. Bristol Hospital is the only
hospital in Hartford County to have the newest version of the da Vinci Surgical System. The Robotic
Surgery program has a team of surgeons who utilize the da Vinci system included bariatric and
general surgeon, Vanessa Malit, MD, who also is medical director of the Robotic Surgery Program,
and general and vascular surgeon, Rainer Bagdasarian, MD. The benefits of the da Vinci system
include: less post-operative pain, lower risk of infection, minimal scarring, decreased blood loss,
faster recovery times and earlier discharge from the hospital. Surgery with the da Vinci system
allows patients to return to their normal activities faster than with traditional open surgery.

Southington—raised more than $75,000. Entitled, “A Roaring New Era,” all funds raised from
the ball benefit Bristol Hospital’s Robotic Surgery program which includes the da Vinci Surgical
System. In attendance at the ball included (from left): President and CEO Kurt A. Barwis, FACHE;
Mike Adams, chairman of the Bristol Hospital Development Foundation Board of Directors; Jane
Kanowitz, MD, medical director of oncology services and ball honorary co-chair; Carmine Volpe,
MD, FACS, chairman of surgery and ball honorary co-chair, and John J. Leone, Jr, chairman of the
Bristol Hospital Board of Directors. A special thank you to all the event sponsors including the
“Renaissance Sponsor,” Barnes Group Inc.
The 20th Annual Bristol Hospital Development Foundation Golf Classic took place on June 8 at the
Golf Club of Avon. The tournament raised approximately $53,000 which will benefit the hospital’s
purchase of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Shown from left are President and CEO Kurt A. Barwis,
FACHE; from the tournament gift sponsor, O’Brien, Tanski and Young, LLP, Michael Rigg, Esq, and
Roland Young, and from Tracy-Driscoll Insurance and Financial Services Brian Dehm, who also serves
