STUDENT SUCCESS IN TOYOTA
2015 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW
Students and staff from the UAW-LETC Advanced
Automotive Training Program participated in the
New York International Auto show in April. Our
students and staff were personally invited by Toyota
to attend this event. In fact, the Toyota representative had this to say: “The students were a great asset
at the event, and they were excellent representatives
of Job Corps and T-TEN. We could not have asked
for a better group of young people!”
THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT!
Toyota is solidly committed
to supporting the UAWLETC Program.

EMPLOYER FEEDBACK REGARDING STUDENTS
Volkswagen of America
We are currently working with Dirk Schleef, Quality Technical Manager from Volkswagen
to set up linkages for some of our Automotive and Diesel students. Dirk is firmly behind the
notion to utilize the UAW-LETC AT Program to obtain graduates for some of his dealerships
in the intermountain area. Dirk has invited several Service Managers to visit the UAW shops
here at Clearfield to further develop relationships with our program and to provide the respective Service Managers the opportunity to learn more about our students and the training
options we offer our students. Moving forward, we will be working with Dirk to give our students the opportunity to learn more about Volkswagen. According to Dirk, Volkswagen has
plans to widen their market presence in the United States through 2018.
CENTER OF THE QUARTER
UAW-LETC is proud to recognize the Los
Angeles Job Corps Center as the Center of
the Quarter. We ar e ver y pleased with the
students they send us for their excellence and
commitment to their training. Over the past 6
months, our relationships with several key
staff including, Jermaine Hanspard, Nicole
Murry, and Linda Garret. The staff at the
Los Angeles Center have been extremely
helpful and professional with us. In addition,
their students are outstanding. Recently I interviewed two of their students and I was
impressed with their awesome
attitude and outlook on their future. Furthermore, a current LAJCC student,
Graciela Gomez, was recognized by the
Dallas Regional Office for the “We Can
Do It!” award. This award was given to
Graciela for her outstanding work-ethic
and commitment to her education and
training. The young men and women from
the LAJCC are extremely motivated to
learn and expand their knowledge. We
would also like to thank the staff at for
everything they do to support their students
and to Advanced Training.

Graciela Gomez, “We Can Do It! Award Winner!
Graciela leads by example. Growing up in a rough
neighborhood, she didn’t see very many people get out
and make a life worth living. Her cousins were involved in the gang life, one of them was shot and is
now in a wheelchair for life. She became incredibly
motivated to avoid becoming a stereotype and to push
harder to achieve her goals. She made the choice to
join Job Corps in Los Angeles and later made the
choice to leave her whole family behind to pursue
more education through the Advanced Automotive
program at Clearfield. At the Clearfield Job Corps
UAW Program, Graciela is a woman in a maledominated trade (Diesel) who provides a good role
model for current and future students, regardless of
gender. Her enthusiasm for her trade is infectious.
She is also dorm president and has an after school job
on campus.
DIESEL APPRENTICESHIP THROUGH THE U. S.
DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
The Clearfield Job Corps Center UAW-LETC Program recently signed a Standard of Internship Agreement with the Office of Apprenticeship for the Medium/Heavy Truck
Technician Program. The objectives of Internship standards training is to have students
skilled in all phases of the industry. In addition to the in-house standardized training,
there must be an intensive Work-Based-Learning component built into the model. The on
-the-job-training aspect is a critical piece to the overall success of the apprentice and the
relationship with the sponsoring employer. Over the years, UAW-LETC has developed a Quotes:
large network of local and national employers interested in participating in student skills
development. At any given time, more than 15% of the UAW-LETC student body is par- “A person who
ticipating in off-center Work-Based Learning and internship skill development.
won't read has
no advantage
In addition to adding the apprenticeship component to the Diesel Program, UAW-LETC
over one who
focused on ASE certification, UAW-LETC has established detailed procedure in which
more Automotive and Diesel students will take and pass ASE tests. In fact, the current can't read.”
ASE pass rate for this year is well over 75%. Our students are having
success passing tests in all automotive or diesel areas.
