THOMAS O'CONNOR
Dr. Thomas O'Connor, Boston College University Historian and Professor Emeritus
of History, is Boston's preeminent historian. He has published numerous books on the
history of Boston and its many populations, from Building a New Boston to Eminent
Bostonians. His book, The Hub: Boston Past and Present, has been a component of the

1996 for his role in the WGBH documentary, "Boston: The Way it Was," and in 1999,
he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Eire Society of Boston. Boston's Histories:
Essays in Honor of Thomas H. O'Connor was published in 2003.
ANASTASIA KIRBY LUNDQUIST
Anastasia Kirby Lundquist, Emmanuel Class of 1935, is celebrating her 70th reunion
this year. She is an accomplished writer, performer and commentator who played an
important role in the early days of radio and television. She is the author of a history of
the Emmanuel Chapel entitled, The Chapel Speaks, and A Dream of Christmas Eve. A
loyal alumna who has been actively involved with her alma mater since her graduation,
Stasia Lundquist is the oldest living relative of Emmanuel's first Dean and founder of the
College, Sister Helen Madeleine Ingraham, SND.
KIP TIERNAN
Kip Tiernan is a pioneering social activist and the founder of Rosie's Place, the first
shelter for homeless women in the United States. For over 30 years Tiernan has led
the fight to feed and shelter the homeless in Boston. She is the founder of the Greater
Boston Food Bank, the Boston Women's Fund, and Healthcare for the Homeless, and
she co-founded Community Works and the Poor People's United Fund, a funding source

ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic attire worn at Commencement has its origins in the Middle Ages. The purpose
of academic regalia is to display the academic and scholarly achievements of the wearer. From
the cap, gown and hood it is possible to distinguish the institution from which the wearer
graduated, the field of learning in which his or her degree was earned, and the level of degree.
Academic hoods are the most distinctive feature of academic attire in the United States.
They are the visual representation of scholastic degrees, and their design is authorized by
the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume. Hoods are lined with the official color of
the college or university conferring the degree, and the velvet detail represents the learning
discipline. All Emmanuel College hoods are black with blue lining and the following colors
represent each discipline:
Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Fine Arts
White
Gold
Brown
Master of Science
Master of Education
Master of Arts
Gold
Light Blue
White
The honorary hoods are white for Doctor of Humane Letters and purple for Doctor of Laws.
The mortarboard hats and soft caps are black. Prior to receiving the bachelor's degree, the
tassel is worn on the right. The graduates ceremonially turn the tassel to the left at the end of
Commencement Exercises. Doctoral tassels are gold. Bachelor's degree candidates who are
members of academic honor societies wear cords to represent this achievement.
Gowns are normally black, and the level of the degree is indicated by the gown's cut. Colored
doctoral gowns represent the school colors of the college or university that awarded the doctoral
degree. The blue and gold gowns of the platform party comprised of trustees and honorees
represent the Emmanuel College colors. Other dignitaries choose to wear their own institution's
robes. The President of Emmanuel College wears her doctoral robes from the University of
Michigan, along with the Emmanuel College Presidential Medallion that was presented to her
on the occasion of her 20th anniversary as President.
ACADEMIC HONORS
Latin Honors are awarded to full-time bachelor's degree candidates who have achieved high
scholastic performance based on grade point averages. The honors are cum laude, magna cum
laude, and summa cum laude.
Presidential Honors are awarded to part-time professional program students who have achieved
high scholastic performance based on grade point averages.
Distinction in the Field of Concentration is awarded to students who receive a specified grade
point average in major courses and who complete successfully a significant senior project.
EMMANUEL COLLEGE
Emmanuel College is a Catholic, coeducational, liberal arts and sciences college with a superb
faculty and a long tradition of academic excellence and innovation. At Emmanuel today, there
are new partnerships, new academic programs, and new facilities and technology.
The mission of Emmanuel College is to educate students in a dynamic learning community rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and shaped by strong ethical values and a Catholic academic
tradition. Emmanuel prepares students with the skills to succeed in tomorrow's world and the
social conscience to make a difference in that world. The faculty members are accomplished,
active scholars, who are committed to teaching. The college provides students with the practical
skills and intellectual tools they will need to succeed in their post-graduate studies and to assume
positions of professional leadership.
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur opened Emmanuel College in 1919. Students are educated
in an environment where ethical values, moral behavior and concern for others are a central part
of the educational experience. True to Emmanuel's Catholic character, students are invited to
consider complex issues of social justice and to live out their values.
Situated at the crossroads of Boston's medical, academic, scientific and cultural communities,
Emmanuel College embraces the City of Boston. This urban location provides special opportunities and responsibilities. The City is the extended classroom of Emmanuel students and the place
where they volunteer and intern. Emmanuel's relationship with the City is strong, and the college
contributes to the vitality of the greater Boston community.
The founders of Emmanuel believed in the importance of educating students from a broad range
of ethnic and religious backgrounds, and that tradition continues today. Emmanuel students
come from across the country and around the world. They are united in this global community
by a genuine civility, generosity, and warmth, as well as a deep-seated commitment to mutual
concern and support.
An Emmanuel education challenges students to become critical thinkers, ethical decision makers,
and contributing members of the local community and the global society.
Congratulations to the Class of 2005 as you graduate from Emmanuel College!
